The tallow added a great smooth richness to the broth, though a bit too sweet (blaming the carrot and possibly sugar). My bún bò hué tasted too bland; not only the welcomed lack of salt compared to most over salted places, but lack of explicitly stated spice and lemongrass. Expect aloof service, and lack of table dispenser napkins standard with pho shops. We welcomed the surprise [preserved fish?] chili paste in the cylindrical container. Overall a passable ordinary pho experience for a rainy quiet day. Some off menu options: Mom and dad asked for wide rice noodles (half understood as "hoa fun" in Cantonese) for both of their bowls, and boiled bean sprouts. We only had a single plate of basil, cilantro, jalapeno, and lime among the 3 of us, so I had to request the shredded cabbage traditional with my bowl. Hello Pho, or hello banh mi? I would honestly say goodbye to this pho because it's simply just not the best. And with Kevin's Noodle house only about a mile away, they have some serious competition amongst them! Hello Pho is a Vietnamese restaurant located in the Foodmaxx shopping center off of Monument blvd in Concord. They specialize in traditional Vietnamese cuisine including pho, rice plates, and Vietnamese sandwiches. Although they boast the name "Hello Pho", I wouldn't exactly say that it's their specialty. I used to get my nails done at the nail shop located right next door, so I would stop in here occasionally to grab a bite to eat. I can't speak to any of their rice plates, but I just feel like the pho here is seriously lacking. The broth is tasteless and offers virtually no flavor at all. If you're a fan of soup, you know that the broth is the most important element. It's what gives it its' unique flavor and what marinades the contents. On top of this, I feel that the bowl is always super naked. Lots of noodles but very little meat, veggies, and garnishments. I do, however, enjoy their banh mi sandwiches. They definitely don't skimp in the veggies here! If you like them spicy, this place loads up on the jalapeños! It's super cheap at only around $4 for a sandwich. My only complaint about the sandwiches is that they are pretty small. I could pay $.50 more at Popping Fresh and get a much larger sandwich. But for $4, it's not a bad deal. The restaurant is very clean inside and nicely decorated. Whenever I've come in, there is always someone sitting inside, so they obviously have a nice following of customers. The staff is generally friendly and they are very quick when preparing meals. Parking is hit or miss since it is shared with the Foodmaxx grocery store. I would recommend Hello Pho for their sandwiches rather than their pho personally. You could get much better tasting pho at Kevin's Noodle House. read more

Delicious and traditional Banh mi! I'm an out of town or so this is my first visit. I tend to find a Banh Mi Place as soon as I get to any given city. And you should expect The Bay Area not to disappoint... And so far it doesn't. I ordered the number nine which is a very traditional Banh mi with headcheese, pâté, et Cetera... And I also ordered a chicken Banh mi. They both had fantastic flavor. I preferred the chicken interestingly enough although I usually prefer the traditional. My only complaint and it's a small one is that I expected the bread to be crunchy on the outside but it was soft - still it was super flavorful and the bread was delicious. This place got a lot of hype and great reviews, so it has been on my bookmark list to try! I love the location although a bit smaller than I am used to for Pho spots. I noticed a lot of to-go orders phoned or drop-in and walk out so word is definitely out on this spot. I do feel like the customer service was above par at this location compared to other places I have tried out here in the bay area. I tried these apparently infamous chicken wings and they were okay, a few of my pieces were a little dry so not sure I would go out of my way to order that again. I really like that you can order different sizes.. and the extra large is great if that is your only meal of the day! LOL or if you want to eat half and take the other half for lunch the next day. The noodles they use do not hold up for long periods in the broth though. They disintegrate so if you aren't going to eat it with in 24hrs I would make sure that you have your own noodles at home to make and enjoy with the dish. I wasn't too impressed with the beef broth. It lacked flavor and richness that I have come to know with ordering pho. The broth should darn near warm and fill your very soul when it is a well-rounded and flavorful bowl. The beef ball also didn't hold as much flavor as I am used to and were far more chewy than I am used to as well. Service is great, very friendly and willing to converse in length about menu items as well as make suggestions. Unfortunately they did not have the only "real" dessert on the menu the night I came by, which was a complete bummer.. craving something new and sweet to try. Ordered bun bo hue here a couple days ago when it was raining. It's very hard to find BBH in north bay that meets the standards I have (OC little Saigon standards). The bun bo hue was okay, the broth was a little lighter and not as rich as I am used to. The meat was okay, there was a bit of a smell that the pork had that my mom would not have approved of. There was no pork Huck or pork blood that I expected either. The staff was super nice and gave us extra chili oil on the side (sa te) which was great because it wasn't spicy enough. I have been looking for a new Vietnamese restaurant to go to in the Central Contra Costa area. I think I have found it in Hello Pho. I went there for dinner tonight with my brother and a friend. We arrived at around 5:30pm and found ourselves to be their only customers. The restaurant looked clean and nicely decorated. For three big guys, our order was really simple: three XL bowls of combination pho (#16 on the menu, $8.50) and an order of garlic chicken wings (#7 on the menu, $6.50). TIP: Their pho comes in three sizes: small, large, and extra large. The pho came first and they sure were huge! Tons of noodles and meat swam inside the tub-size bowls. Everything met my pho criteria: hot broth, well-cooked noodles, and tons of meat. The meat quality was average. But for that price, it was a good bargain. The garlic chicken wings were simply awesome! They were hot, juicy, and garlicky. What I liked about it was that they cut the wings into drumettes and mid section wings. It really gave the appearance of a lot of wings on the plate. We went through those in no time. They were so much better than the ones you get at a fast food restaurant. The staff was friendly although not too engaging. Parking was not a problem since the restaurant is located in a shopping center. Thumbs up on this place. My second time coming here. The first time, the pho was bland and the smoothie was nasty (they made it from powder but assured me they used real stuff), but it was near when they first opened, and I felt like it was unfair to judge them when they were just starting out. I ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee with condense milk and a Beef Curry (since they usually don't have it at other places). The service was Typical asian-hole-in-the-wall service. They were quick with the food and left you alone. The only issue I had with that was that once more people came, the only waiter they hired there was taking 5 minutes to write orders down and to give change back. Poor operating. The coffee was put in a small Dixie cup. Presentation needs work. The flavor was alright, but it tastes similar to this canned coffee I get from 99 ranch. Disappointed. The beef curry was disappointing. There was a layer of oil/grease? floating on top of the noodles, which made the entire meal overly greasy. I couldn't make out much of the flavor. Getting it with rice noodle was a mistake. It usually can come with Egg Noodle or Bread, and I think either would have been a better combination. I wish they made that recommendation when I wasn't sure which to get it with. The prices are a little high, compared with some of the pho places in the area. I want to say I come in about once a month and whenever I feel like I am starting to get a sore throat. A bowl of their Pho drenched in their chili pepper oil is my cure all for a sore throat. I swear by it! I am a huge fan of their #2 Fresh Spring Rolls, I could easily eat only those for the rest of my life as long as they are accompanied by their peanut dipping sauce. I have ordered their Spring Rolls to-go a couple of times and they are no where near as good as they are in the restaurant, I guess that can be true for any food. If you do order their #2 to-go I suggest asking for extra peanut dipping sauce because, at least for me, the amount they give you isn't enough. I also religiously order their #20, which is their Pho with sliced steak. Every once in awhile I will switch it up and order Pho with a different cut of meat but I think the #20 is the best. I really like their Thai Iced Tea. Their prices are decent, the quality of food is great and the customer service is excellent. It was warm out so it wasn't the most ideal. They had the typical options on their menu and of course, I ordered pho at a new place! The fillings (Grilled pork, cilantro, onion, green pepper,carrot) were beautifully layered against each other and very balanced. The wrapper was dried out, meaning it was pre-wrapped. The pho came out in a tiny little bowl, full of noodles and little beef. My go-to item at Vietnamese restaurants is a vermicelli noodle bowl with pork, shrimp, and egg roll w/ a good Vietnamese iced coffee to go with it. I'm on the hunt for a really good place in the East Bay. Hello Pho is ok, but I wasn't super impressed. But both the pork and shrimp were super dry and overcooked. Like some of the pork was so hard I couldn't chew it. And the shrimp was super small too. Also, I was expecting the Vietnamese iced coffee where they bring it to you brewing and you pour it yourself over the ice and condensed milk. They just brought it already mixed over ice. I am a local who absolutely adores this pho restaurant, I've been coming here for years. Customer service is off the charts. Well don't be afraid of this gem that looks like a hole in the wall. As soon as you walk in the place has been remodeled so it's spacious and cozy. The ambiance is perfected with the lighten echo of music in the background. Most of the workers here know I am a regular. However, I haven't been here for about 4 months now, it was time for my grand return. Haha. So, the lady who runs the restaurant is so sweet, very helpful and attentive. As you find your seat which is self seating, you sit down and they come over right away. Once they take your order which my order is always the same "chicken Pho, with a side of meat egg rolls!" Which is some of the best pho I've ever had. VEGAN OPTIONS!!! This restaurant was perfect for my classmates and I, to catch lunch since they have many vegan options. They definitely have more options than most other Vietnamese restaurants. I'm personally not a vegan but my classmates said their dishes were really good and that 'Hello Pho' is one of their new fav spots to go to. I believe them cause my food was awesome!
