The green curry was good, but wasn't as rich in flavor as I was expecting it to be. The consistency of the curry was on the watery end. We ordered everything as we would at any Thai restaurant with our go to dishes but I have never paid $200+. It almost felt like getting robbed. 20% was added to our bill for 3 adults and 2 kids. I was kind of thrown off with the portions so much that I didn't take pictures of everything. We ordered tom kha gai, chicken wings, chicken satay, crab fried rice, pad see ew, green curry eggplant with chicken, garlic calamari, and chicken satay. A big letdown to be honest. I had great expectations for this restaurant due to high reviews but I'm really not sure why after actually trying the food here. First I like the location; it's on the main street and has a quaint feel to it. The service is also good enough as the owners are courteous. However I do have two big problems with the food. It's way too expensive for the quality and the portion you get. For example there is no lemongrass in the Tom Yum soup and flavor is off. The soup feels like "watered down," and unfortunately that's the theme for the flavors. The curry (red curry) is also very much watered down. I like my curry thick and flavorful but the curry here is watery and unsavory. My other problem with the food is that the seafood especially the calamari rings are not fresh. A fresh calamari should be chewy without being soggy but the ones served have absolutely not chewiness at all which is a sign it's not fresh (not spoiled just not fresh). My biggest problem has to do with portion and price. With most dish over $24 with prawns it's hard to see any value especially with the quality of the dish. The portions are small and the price is expensive so when the flavor is not up to par I just can't say it's worth going. Overall I have a hard time recommending this place even if I like the interior and the service. My average cost per person (food only) is over $45 and each order of white rice is $4 which is just too high. read more

My boss rated this place a 5/5 so we had to give it a try as an office order & everyone loved it. Especially me! Yum woon sen isn't a common item on a thai food menu in Walnut Creek so I was so happy they had it and it was so delicious I finished it in 1 sitting LOL. However if you park at one of the near by garages, it's an easy walk to Plearn. Especially after you eat dinner. The restaurant is clean, cozy, and spacious. We arrive during lunch on a Saturday and was seated immediately. We ordered the traditional Pad Thai Chicken noodle, Pineapple Fried Rice, and Chicken Bbq Satay. They were delicious. Portions were plenty for two people. Chicken Satay was tender along with the peanut sauce. The Ice Coffee was also our favorite and made perfectly. Visiting my friends and we decided to check this spot out for NYE. We arrived at 715pm and we were seated right away. Love that it's a "hole-in-the-wall" spot...it usually always mean the food is good and speaks for itself. My friends ordered the panang and pineapple fried rice. The panang was flavorful and perfect for the colder temps outside. The pineapple fried rice was a nice big portion, and you can tell it was made fresh to order (nice big pieces of the protein and veggies that were clearly tossed in together to cook (rather than just something pre-made with small pieces sitting in a pot)). They both enjoyed their meals fully. I ordered the spring rolls for us all to share and pat-siu. I love that the spring rolls were smaller pieces. The rolls were super crispy and jam packed with filling. So good. It was interesting to have the dipping sauce be a type of honey. The pat-siu was ok. I felt like the noodles were super oily and stuck together, and there weren't very many veggies even though I asked for extra broccoli to be added to the dish. The tofu was cooked well and I appreciated they were cut into smaller pieces so they were more fully cooked as I prefer. We ordered the mango sticky rice for dessert. I've never had it with the purple rice before so that was fun. The rice was nice and warm and the mango was fresh and ripe. Devoured every bite. The staff was extremely friendly and I think the owner even delivered food for us at one point and they were so kind and funny joking with us. I feel like when I dropped in for takeout a few months ago, that the staff had been completely replaced, and then noticed sketchy things like my order or pad Thai with tofu had also had a couple of shrimp and a few pieces of chicken. I think the old staff got the drift that most folks who are ordering tofu are vegetarian or vegan. The pad Thai that I got tonight was almost completely noodles with maybe one piece of a scallion and meager tofu (but again, a couple of pieces of chicken). The flavor is there, but the portions are so small compared to even a month ago that it makes me don't want to go back. They raised the price on the meat dishes, which I understand. It was 8:15 and everything in Walnut Creek closes at 9pm. I was craving Green Curry. We were hungry and just picked this place because they were open. I've tried many of the Thai places all around the WC area and have yet to find one I really like, until now. All the food is fresh and very well made. The rice was perfect and flavorful. The ambiance and vibe of the overall restaurant was warm, welcoming, and very clean. It is not casual dining but is casual in style. It was late and the owner took our order. He is a really nice guy. As for the green curry I wanted so much, the steamy coconutty spicy rich chickeny broth with just a bit of heat was perfect. The only thing I would change is to eliminate the green beans but that's purely my taste. My partner had the PatHed, which he loved. Will we return? Absolutely, and I hope soon! I am advocating for family owned restaurants everywhere when I ask diners to get up and go out to any of the local family owned restaurants instead of using those delivery services. Those services charge the customers many fees and then also charge the restaurants about 25%. They are killing these wonderful places. We were a party of six people. We came here to celebrate our friend's birthday. The Thai food was excellent and tasty. The waitstaff was very friendly and fun to deal with. It made for a good evening that everyone enjoyed. We brought in our own birthday cake for dessert and they provided a knife to cut the cake as well as clean plates. I met up with a friend I hadn't seen in maybe four years recently and we came here. His dad says this is a good place, and we agreed to get some food here. We split a chicken satay and I ordered a yellow chicken curry and my friend had a pad Thai. The satay had a good, juicy texture to it, but it lacked seasoning. The peanut sauce was a good complement for the satay and really rich. The curry was ok. It lacked inherent seasoning, but it was ok. The waiter was nice and attentive, and made sure we were doing ok. The food is good. The service is ok. But what happened at the end of our meal left such a bad taste in my mouth. I won't be back. And I have not told my wife that yet. A little background. 36 years ago, my wife and I had our first date at Plearn in Berkeley. Back then it was the big Thai restaurant in Berkeley. Lots of special occasions, graduation dinners going on. It was a nice place for a first date. Occasionally, we quietly celebrate our wedding anniversary at the restaurant in Walnut Creek, which I understand is owned by the son of the original owner. Last night was one of those nights. When ordering dinner I specifically asked for Thai iced tea with "a little" ice. There was a specific reason for this. I enjoy Thai iced tea but don't like how the flavor gets watered down when they bring the tea before the meal and the ice melts and waters it down. In retrospect i guess I could have asked for the drink with the meal but 90% of the time at restaurants that doesn't work. They're in their little routine and the drink either comes anyway or is forgotten. So I don't ask for drinks with the meal anymore. Simply a little or no ice. Anyway, "a little ice". Somewhat subjective but an easy enough request. I was hoping for maybe a quarter of a glass of ice. I expected a half a glass of ice but what I got was three quarters of a glass of ice and that was after the ice had melted and started affecting the taste. So, I finished the glass and ordered another. Not because I wanted another glass but because I didn't want a watered down drink with my meal. (Maybe I should have sent it back from the start.) Seems pretty simple. So this time I ordered another drink without ice. Keep in mind that the drinks are $6.95 and that if my instructions were followed, I would not have to be ordering another. The meal went fine. We ordered an appetizer, a salad, two entrees with rice, drinks and a dessert. ~$109 total. When the bill comes, my wife, who always checks the bill sees this "special charge" of $8.95. When we ask the waitress what the charge was for, she replied it was for the Thai iced tea without ice. Really? I laughed. I ask for no ice regularly (I don't like watered down drinks) and have never been charged extra for it. ($2 upcharge for no ice. On a drink I wouldn't have needed to order if the order was correct in the first place...) We payed the bill and left. If they had followed instructions to begin with I wouldn't have had to order another drink and if they had informed me of the upcharge, I probably wouldn't be leaving this review. Ordered takeout from here on a weekend night and was ready within 15 minutes! I've always wanted to try it since I walk by it all the time. The restaurant is cute and cozy. The Pad Thai with chicken was very tasteful and had a big portion size that lasted me two days. I also tried their Thai iced tea, which wasn't the best but still refreshing. We've been passing by this place so many times and finally tried it. We got some regular Thai dishes like Tomyum, chicken satay and red curry with mango. Always order Thai ice tea with the meal as well. Everything was good and I was a bit surprised that it wasn't that crowded on Saturday around lunch time. The owner was super friendly, constantly checked on us to see if we needed anything. Their menu is pretty big so maybe we'll try other items next time. Everything was okay here. I'm not sure I would come back but given this is one had watery curry and the service was what put us off. Also, I'm not a fan of the purple rice. I think that for this area it's hard to find decent thai food, so I can see why this place is so popular. But, if ot had serious competition I'm not quite sure this place would be 4 stars. The lady here did not wear a mask and she was both the server and may have been the owner. She had no desire to seat or serve us even though we were her ONLY table. My first review here was over three years ago and my opinion on this place has not changed. It's a cute little hidden gem on the busy street of N Main. This is our go-to place for comfort food. I'm currently here towards the end of lunch hour and it's not busy at all. Quick service, friendly, nice quiet atmosphere. I can hear the sizzle of the food frying in the pans as they cook in the back, and the laughter of the employees chatting as they cook. We wandered through Walnut Creek, marveling at the wonderful array of cuisines to choose from. Thai sounded good so we slipped into the small but aesthetically pleasing Plearn Thai Palace. I ordered a pot of Jasmine Tea and the Pra Kung. The tea was hot and we were warned by our cheery, communicative waitress to give it a couple of minutes.
