Hen House Eatery was recommended for brunch and it didn't disappoint. Busy spot, so expect a wait, but we lucked out at the bar. Service was great, and the food was classic brunch done really well. Solid option if you're in town. read more

Very popular and very busy, which is proof that the food is pretty good but also brings all the standard issues of a very crowded restaurant. Staff look a bit stressed trying to stay on top of service, but usually aren't rude about being in a rush. Food is pretty good but sometimes kinda bland. If you come often you're sure to find something you love, it might just take a couple tries. read more

Wow! Great food, cool vibe and great service. It was very busy, but only a short 5 minute wait. The specialty coffees were very high quality. We had a mocha and a salted caramel mocha. We shared an apple cinnamon roll and it was amazing. Soft and light, but it is a big roll! We ordered Chillaquiles Rojo and a Hog Heaven BK sandwich with hash browns. Everything was delicious. We say in a booth and found it easy to talk even though it was busy. Definitely one of the best experiences in the Twin Cities. read more

Nothing about this place is hyped; I see why they have so many great reviews. I had the Crab-Baby Eggs Benedict, and I loved it! My sister had the chilaquiles rojos, and it was even better. The coffees were good, but they could have been better. The French toast was really good. Overall, I'd come back here the next time I'm in town. The food is A1! read more

Saturday morning at 10:30 and this place is packed with a long wait... a very good sign. I was sat at the counter for breakfast and greeted by a very friendly/very busy behind-the-counter server. Ordered the fresh squeezed OJ, 2 eggs and hash browns with side of chicken sausage and cup of fruit. When choosing between the hen potatoes or hash browns, my server told me the hash browns were far superior. The hash browns were indeed perfect. Crispy outside, soft inside. The eggs were as expected and the chicken sausage tasted so flavorful I could've mistaken it for pork sausage (maybe it was?)... loved it anyway. This breakfast took 45 minutes to get to me after I ordered it. Kitchen must have been slammed. Was served without the cup of fruit I ordered, so the server had a runner get that for me ten minutes later. Arrived as a bowl of fruit instead of a cup, and I was charged for a bowl as well. Total for this breakfast was roughly $36 after tax before tip. Ambiance on this busy Saturday was "diner crowded" with an energetic buzz. Of note, I purchased a cake and strawberry rhubarb bar from their pastry case the day prior and both were amazing. Server behind the pastry counter was exceptionally friendly. Overall a solid choice for breakfast. Just know that on the most popular days/times your wait to be seated will be long, and your wait to get food may be longer. Depending on what you're looking for, this can be a great place. They have a lot of food options, some more indulgent, but also a lot of tasty options that are more nutritious as well. Welcoming to kids and families, clean bathrooms, and typically good service. We have eaten there twice in two days and Esther has been an excellent server :) read more

The Crab/Baby Eggs Benedict is easily the best eggs Benedict I've ever had. The Cajun hollandaise really elevated the dish. The crab cake was also higher quality than I expected, lots of crab meat. The caramel roll was almost as good as my grandmother's recipe. We actually turned around initially after seeing the line, but there was a heated waiting area by the bathrooms. Only had to wait about 20-25 minutes for our table. read more

This place should've been much better than it tasted. They seem to have everything going for them - good staff, good location, great appearances, clean bathrooms, and more. Except the food was a let down because the food taste as though it was adjusted for the local inhabitants (non-vibrant taste). Order the same meal in Mexico City, with the same ingredients, then you'll know. read more

This is a very nice, spacious restaurant with very kind staff and a large menu. The pastries at the counter look absolutely amazing, though the one that I tried, I didn't really care for. I believe it was the apple pie turnover or something like that. I think that's the theme for the place, because although they have quite a large menu, both of the items I had were just okay. I had the bison burger with french fries and it honestly wasn't anything to write home about. Even the people I was dining with thought their food was just mid. We sat there for quite a while though after eating and were allowed refills and to just hang out and enjoy the space which was very nice. That being said, it was after the lunch rush. For the limited options of restaurants in the area, you definitely wouldn't be disappointed if you ate here, but you also wouldn't be raving about it either. read more

Walked in randomly while in town and I could immediately tell this place is a local favorite since it was packed! I sat at the bar top and was met with a fresh, hot cup of coffee. Place was packed upon arrival but I was able to take a seat wherever I'd like. The waiter was attentive and friendly explaining the special and even a few of her favorite items. I placed my order and my drinks were brought to me within 2 minutes or less. My food arrived after about a 15 minute wait. The roll was humongous. Enough to feed two easily. However the roll was warm or hot as I would have liked, instead it was cool like it had been in a fridge and left out until the rest of my order was ready. It was also overly sweet due to the syrup they used on it. My omelette however was perfect. The potato's were colorful and delicious as well. Love the purple potatoes. The toast was multigrain and thickly sliced. The apple juice was brought in a small glass while my water was in a bigger tumbler. Other patrons were also nice and offered conversation as we sat next to each other in an arms length. Fantastic food and a great atmosphere. The worst restaurant experience I have had in recent memory! Came in on a Friday to a busy restaurant. Sat at the bar and was ready to order before the server came up to me which was over 5 minutes. I ordered coffee and an omelet from a rude and obviously frustrated middle aged man working the bar by himself. It took about 10 minutes for my slightly warmer than lukewarm coffee to be delivered with some attitude. The 2 young ladies sitting next to had obviously been waiting a long time so after about 30 minutes with no contact from my server I asked what was going on. They told me they had been waiting for over an hour for pancakes and French toast!!! When their food finally arrived it looked very sub par and rushed when cooked. At the :45 minutes mark I paid for my coffee and told the server my wait was too long to which he responded "fine" with attitude. I told him I know it was not his fault but I wasn't going to wait any longer. He shook his head at me and didn't respond further. I have worked in restaurants and must say this was a terrible experience. I will never try this establishment again and will be sure to warn my many colleagues to avoid at all costs. read more

This spot came recommended by our hotel, and was a solid choice. If you're looking for a hearty breakfast, this is the place. The menu has something for everyone, from classic comfort dishes to fun twists (plus some delicious-sounding bakery treats we really wish we had saved room for). We enjoyed a nice brunch at Hen House Eatery! The ambiance is very sunny and jovial and the service was good. An excellent breakfast/brunch spot! Our group of 4 came at 9 on a Saturday and were seated right away. It did eventually get very busy with a long line of people to be seated. The menu has an extensive list of options. I ordered the Babe's Benedict and enjoyed the flavor of the pulled pork with the jalapeño cheddar cornbread. Hash browns were brown and crispy- perfectly prepared. Rest of the group ordered the cinnamon roll, California Eggs Benedict, Southern Waffle, and Corned Beef Hash. No leftovers in sight! Clearly a local favorite! I just so happened to sit next to a regular and the waiter (very cool guy) must've spotted him when he entered cause he had his coffee ready in hand. He confirmed his order by the time he sat down. Love that kind of customer service! I ordered the dirty chai. And Isabella's omelette. Yurm! Portion was more than expected and served with a side of chips, salsa and guacamole. Omelette was so good, didn't have to add anything to it. They did not hold back in the filling. Hallelujah! Guacamole was fresh and delicious. Salsa was good, I like spicy (which it wasn't) but still good to add to the omelette. Dirty chai was also enjoyable. This place was so busy but from what I could tell ran smoothly, like the butter on those pancakes and French toast I couldn't stop eyeing. Staff is very nice and the service is so fast, so is how quickly they turn those tables. They know what they're doing!! I didn't realize how big this place is either, don't find that very often anymore. I came here based on the reviews and hope this helps-not that they need it. I could keep going on this review but cutting myself off. Go enjoy fellow foodies! UPDATE: I caved and went back the next day and had the pistachio iced coffee and the Babe's eggs Benedict. Just go! First things first, this place is huge and still packed - we had a 30 min wait coming here for Labor Day around noontime. The Hen House omelet was excellent. Loved the apples and caramelized onions adding a touch of sweetness to it. My only gripe was that there was too much spinach - if there was 20% less spinach, it'd be perfect. read more

Some of the best brunches are the classic, simple, savory and delicious options and by golly did Hen House deliver. The extensive gaggle of customers waiting outside the establishment for their name to be called did make me question how long my rumbling stomach could wait. But let go and let Hen House I guess as their assembly line efficiecnt service sat us promptly within 15 minutes. I was shortly slurping down crispy Diet Coke, though perhaps I should've had a more "hair of the dog" moment with the hearty Bloody Mary's I spied. My comrade and I dined on omelets though I had quite the dilemma deciding between that and the chorizo bowl. We were so excited to go back to the Hen House during our visit to Minneapolis and thankfully the food was still as delicious as ever but the waitress was very short with us and as I was ordering she responded like I was an inconvenience when I asked for the matcha in a to go cup. Stopped by Hen House Eatery for brunch on a Saturday and boy was it busy! Very popular destination for breakfast, even for downtown on a weekend. If possible: get a reservation! While you wait though, you can get a refillable coffee from the coffee area and later add it to your same tab. I ordered the foxy Benedict on the recommendation of our server (yum!!) and we got a cinnamon roll to split (they're big). Very fun and lovely atmosphere! Just a bit of a wait. read more

I see why everybody raves about this place. I had a dirty Thai and an egg white omelette with quinoa, spinach and chicken added. I've never cleaned off a breakfast dish so fast. My omelette was perfection- it wasn't soggy from the quinoa and there wasn't much grease to it. It's the second time I had to visit the area for work in a year and I've been meaning to try it, and I was not disappointed. The sole star is for service- the restaurant was half empty at around 7am and yet, our food took a good half hour or more to come out. We were very frustrated as most breakfast spots don't ever take that long. read more

We pulled up to this restaurant on a Sunday at 11am and saw a line out the door, but luckily enough they said it was only a 15 minute wait- so it was quick! They have a lot of different styles of seating, and we were seated at a high top. Staff was friendly overall. I ordered the chicken wild rice soup and the hashbrowns, both of which were just okay. The hashbrowns were a bit too butter/oily (??). However, I absolutely cannot stop thinking about the buttermilk side pancake I got- probably one of the best I've ever had! It was huge so I could've split it with someone. Definitely get the pancake! read more

I've been here a of couple times now. We love the food, but the drinks were not great. I wanted to love their coffee so much, but it's not my cup of tea. Parking can be a hassle and depending on the time there could be a wait because they get busy. Plenty of food options to choose from for everybody. This place was super cozy! I came with a friend who picked it for lunch. I love the wraparound counter and the decor. I had been eyeing the menu for a while since I'm generally indecisive before settling on a small salad and soup combo. I was really looking forward to trying their famed chicken and wild rice soup. I went here before a Twins game, and it was such a delight. Everything we ordered was AMAZING. GET THE CINNAMON ROLL, even if you have to some to go. Dough was so moist, well flavored. Staff were so nice, too. The lady we had was so welcoming for being our first time. Excellent, classic American breakfast. It gives off 80's diner, in a very good way. They have all the American classics that you would want plus a few non-traditional items. Huge portions, especially considering you're downtown. The hashbrowns were very good. They had some kind of seasoning that gave them like a orange hue. They were delicious. We had the country fried steak. Very good. Sausage gravy was nice. Classic eggs benedict was delicious. They do use ham instead of Canadian bacon. California benedict was nice as well. It had bacon, tomato and guacamole. Delicious. Both had lots of hollandaise sauce on them to. Everything was reasonably priced. Service was quick. We got our food in less then 10 minutes. Great find while I was in town for work. There are lots of fun things to look at and a very cool bar-top thru the middle of the bar. Service was great and accommodated my requests. The Bloody Mary was great and comes with a small beer. Love that! For breakfast, I ordered the crab cake Benedict, but I'm not a poached egg fan, so I asked for my eggs scrambled. I came here on a Sunday around 11:00 am. We thought we would be waiting for a while but was actually able to sit down at the bar right away. We overheard the bar staff making comments how this is slow for a Sunday, and that was surprising to hear considering how many people were trying to get a table. Parking is always a fickle thing in downtown Minneapolis and finding a parking spot for this place is no different. We were able to find a parking spot in church parking lot a block away (we knew there was a chance we could get towed). Overall this was pleasant dining experience. Service was good. I felt as busy as the staff was we had someone checking in on us every 10-15 minutes. I feel like I wasn't waiting long for a water or coffee refill. In terms of the food. It was good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone wanting to find a good breakfast spot in downtown Minneapolis. I consider myself a breakfast junkie so I hold high standards for breakfast restaurants. I got the corn beef hash and wasn't disappointed at all, but at the same time it didn't blow me away. I honestly would need to come back and try out more items on the menu (especially some of the sweeter meals) before I start recommending this place over any other diner in the area. The food here is wonderful, but the hypocrisy and unconscionable behavior of the owners and bar manager should be enough to dissuade anyone from patronizing this business. The Hen House Eatery prides itself on being women owned and operated, yet they just fired a bartender for missing 3 days of work (calling in and speaking to the manager each of those 3 days) because he took his 9-months pregnant wife to the emergency room when she (I) fell and broke her (my) ankle. He literally called in to explain the situation as I was still laying on the ice; called again once we were in the ER when it was finally determined that baby was okay but my ankle was severely broken; and continued to keep his manager updated each step of the way as she assured him not to worry about his job but to take care of me. I fell last Wednesday (12/20) and by Saturday (12/23) he had been removed from the schedule and his name replaced. He did not get confirmation that he had lost his job, however, until 12/27, despite repeatedly trying to reach his manager to find out why he was no longer scheduled. I visited Hen House Eatery on a Sunday around brunch time, and it was super busy with seemingly every inch of the space filled with people waiting or eating. We were told there would be a 30-40 minute wait, but we were pleasantly surprised when we were seated in just 20 minutes. The food took a while to come out, but that was expected given how packed it was. Our server was friendly and gave us some great recommendations, but we didn't see them as often as we would have liked. The cinnamon roll was amazing - definitely the highlight of the meal. The omelet I ordered (Isabella's Chorizo Omelet), however, was a bit bland and needed salt, pepper, salsa, and hot sauce to bring out the flavor. The Peanut Butter bar was a real letdown. While the peanut butter mousse on top was good, the bar itself was so dry it crumbled apart when I tried to eat it. I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, Hen House is a great place for brunch despite a few minor issues. I'll definitely be back for that cinnamon roll! read more

I placed an order for pickup since I heard it can get fairly busy. I showed up at the estimated time. The counter person checked my phone (ordered via Uber) and said it will be out. Fast forward to an hour later standing there after being assured it would be out. I found out the Uber tickets were not being printed and taken to the kitchen. I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheddar muffin and my husband had eggs and hash browns. The food was decent but the issue with miscommunication was beyond unacceptable. I am visiting from out of town and this is the only bad experience I've had at an eatery in the few days I've been here. I'm reporting the issue to Uber and I hope this situation teaches them to communicate effectively amongst themselves and honestly with customers. read more

We got there about 12:30 and the line was long, we left our name and went for a short walk. They had told us it would be 25 minutes, and it was exactly that long before we were seated. The waitress was prompt with our drinks and took our order right away. Within 10 minutes we were eating. The food was excellent! I had the Farmers Wife Omelette. It was huge and I could hardly finish but it was too good to leave so I stuffed it in. The pastries in the glass near the door all looked delectable. I was too full to have one there, so I did a take-out of a slice of their coconut cream pie, which was also wonderful. The walls are bright and the atmosphere is cheery. I will positively return to try something else on the menu. read more

The Hen House is an outstanding breakfast spot that I can't recommend enough. I had one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever tasted here--perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and absolutely satisfying. It's easily become one of my favorites. The service was equally phenomenal. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made the entire dining experience even better. On top of that, their baked goods are fantastic. I picked up a few treats from the counter to bring home, and my family was thrilled with how delicious they were. An absolute favorite for brunch in Minneapolis. No matter what you think you're in the mood for, you have to try the cinnamon roll pancakes. They are just as delicious as they sound! Other typical breakfast favorites like omelets, biscuits and gravy, etc. are just as great. Environment feels like an updated diner with TVs and a mix of booth seating, tall tables, and a bar area. I wasn't super impressed with the "bottomless" mimosas, but only because they are so good and the glasses are so small that you might as well just get one or two regular sized ones without having to worry about refills. Love this place and always recommend to friends! read more

Never been to HH. Heard about it today & doing some research online & came across very hot & cold reviews. Though you can't believe everything you read, smart people know there are either great or bad reviews online. I would probably give them one shot. However, if I witnessed any of that poor, unprofessional staff behavior, I would hold the owner & managers responsible! Everything trickles down from the top. Sounds like you may need more staff (who can act like adults), & better management of them. read more

I recently dined at the Hen House while traveling for work. I ordered the Southern Waffles, which is chicken and waffles with sausage gravy. I got it without the sausage. The waffle was quite tasty, but I was disappointed with the chicken as it seemed to be bagged chicken tenders instead of homemade fried chicken. On a positive note, the atmosphere and service at the Hen House were excellent. Overall, it was a decent experience, earning it a 3-star rating. read more

We are in town for the Final Four and saw how many good reviews this place got so we thought we'd try it out. I ordered the cinnamon roll pancake which is a cinnamon flavored pancake with a cinnamon swirl topped with icing. It was phenomenal! My wife had the wife's omelet and since she is not willing to overeat like I am, i was able to eat the rest of her omelet which was also amazing. We were recommended to come here by a work friend and it did not disappoint, I had the waffles with home made whipped cream it was to die for, my boyfriend had the kitchen sink omelet which was so savory and great balance between egg and ingredients. While we where there the waitress (Gygi) was so nice and cool she really made us feel like we were regulars and was fun to talk to. We will be back! Reminder. Never order anything Mexican this far away from Mexico. I had a chorizo omelet. I think I had about four bites. It was utterly inedible. Add to it, the server walked by the table several times before she noticed that I was signaling her for more coffee. I guess I could have yelled out to get her attention, but I don't think that should have been necessary. The pastries looked nice. read more

Spent the night downtown for my birthday. This was the closest place to our hotel so we tried our luck. It was AWESOME! I built my own omelet, lots of veggie, cheese and meat options. I really enjoy going to eat here and sitting at the lunch counter/bar. The weekday/daytime bartender is really chill and friendly. The food is good! If you go during lunchtime during the week, expect to wait if you haven't called ahead and don't want to sit at the lunch counter. read more
