Sometimes, I'm caught between a rock and a hard confit doing these Yelp reviews. Because I seriously can't say my restaurant experience at Heo Eatery was as wondrous as Barley Swine or Uchiko, but if Heo were a trailer, I'd be praising "Sweet Viet Jesus" for street food and tossing out five stars like Lunar New Year confetti. These are the moments I ponder, "What to do, what to do." So don't think of the metal trays & plastic cutlery here as "Ewww," think of them as cost-effective methods to bring you Bao, Bánh mì, and three $10 entreès in the most affordable way possible. And yeah, I know you can probably get the entire Heo menu for under $10 at Bên Thành Market, or maybe even Houston - but dude, we're in Austin now. They made me a loaded off-the-menu beef Pho (I was in the mood for star anise), the turmeric fish was a surprising delight, and pork belly Bao still rings true, even though it's 2016. And you really need to try that frozen yogurt thing. My only regret here was not getting this gentleman's name, who was working the front, back, and all over the house, doing the counter & delivering the food. He was genuinely interested in us and I'm guessing by the level of service, he must have some ownership to care so deeply about the product he was putting out. The turmeric fish came with a side of pickled veggies (the sort that's on a banh mi) and some roasted veggies - both were excellent. The rice that came under the fish was equally excellent. The fish itself was perfectly cooked - easy to break apart and not a bit rubbery. Sampled the meat on a chopstick - reminded me of a perfectly seasoned, more tender, and more moist version of Chinese sausage. Recommend. The pho had pretty decent broth and the pork belly bao wasn't bad either. If you have a chance to try the frozen yogurt in a bag, do it. It reminds me a bit of the probiotic "Yakult." But in the best way possible! Also, I really enjoyed the house made ginger iced tea... light and refreshing. Is this place a bit more snazzy than your average Vietnamese mom and pop joint? Well, the last authentic Vietnamese restaurant I went to didn't have USB ports at every table. So try it. If regular Vietnamese restaurants were just plain water, this place is the LeCroix. I heard from a friend that this was a great new place to try so I came with my bf. We had the grilled chicken and lemongrass beef rice box, which were really good and authentic tasting. They say it comes with leek and garlic rice, but really it comes with garlic rice, pickled vegetables (leek, carrots, daikon radish, etc) AND delicious roasted vegetables (carrots, Brussels sprouts, carrots, zucchini). Hidden gem in North Central Austin--Loved the baos and the "cottage fries" (mini hashbrowns). There were three bao options the day I stopped by, and I felt that two was adequate for lunch given the size. The set up there is straightforward. Walking in, customers order at the counter before choosing a table to sit at. My friend and I waited for someone to take our order for 5+ minutes with no one ahead of us. I believe they were understaffed as some staff saw us from the kitchen and acknowledged us but no one had come out to get our order. This was the only con I could think of. Came in on a Sunday right at the start of dinner open and they were out of more than half the menu. My turmeric fish was excellent the rice portion was large and tasty. I liked the little side of pickled cabbage, fresh garlic and lime. The grilled veggies were good except for the zucchini which I couldn't personally eat they were extremely soggy inside despite being grilled. Service was good. One guy working front and back but again they are new and probably still working these things out. Not a bad place to check out if you like Vietnamese. Hipster vietnamese food! I got the tumeric fish lunch box, which was pretty flavorful and tasty but I was so thirsty after! Decor inside is cute.. hipster cute. I can see why people are drawn to this place. If you come here expecting traditional Vietnamese cuisine, that you will not find. Not a big fan of trying out new places cause I get so mad when I spend money on shitty food or service. Trying to take more chances out here, so I decided yo try this one out. You know shit is real when they have the little kid working the register! The immigrant in me felt immediately at home, though it was a bit awkward when asking for suggested items. I went with the steamed pork bun with roasted vegetables, and my husband peer pressured me into getting the lemongrass beef banh mi. He got the lemongrass beef over rice. In retrospect, we probably should've picked different meats, but oh well. You pay for the meal up front, and they bring it to your table. The self-serve soda fountain is also up front near the register. Honestly, I shoulda listened to my gut (see how I did that?) and just went with the steamed pork bun and veggies. The food was delicious, but way too much! The banh mi was really tasty, and the bread didn't rip up the roof of my mind. Dude, I hate beets, but these mofos over here know what they're doing! They somehow got me to willingly eat all my veggies! The steamed bun has a thick slice of pork in it, which I think is filling on itself, especially with a side of veggies or their tots. Turmeric fish- Good flavor but wasn't hot. I wish was more crispy. Lemongrass beef- overcooked and a little dry. Also chewy Chicken confit- chicken was moist but wasn't served hot. Each plate comes with rice, pickled veggies, and roasted veggies. The carrots in the roasted vegetables were really undercooked. The taste for each plate was there, but everything came out cold. Because of that, 3 stars instead of 4. Also they make and bottle their own teas! Try the pandan tea if you get a chance. It's a great way to finish off the meal in a refreshing note. read more

Always wanted to try out the place as was curious what kind of food it was from the small unassuming outside on Lamar. The host was very friendly and gave us recommendations. He allowed us to choose any of the meats for any of the dishes mediums, but ultimately I got the pork belly banh mi and the pho. These were very tasty. The pho had clear broth and not too strong. The noodles were very soft. The pork belly banh mi was crispy and meat was soft. The real gems were the fries, which were very crispy tater tots with some sriracha mayo type sauce. A rare gem, and worth the drive. The food, facility, and service (for a fast casual place) were outstanding. Yelp reviews of this place don't lie - truly excellent food at great prices. All the dishes we had (turmeric fish rice box, ribs special rice box, pho, pork belly bao) were great; the roasted veggies (zucchini, brussel sprouts, etc.) and pickled veggies (daikon, chives, carrots, whole raw garlic, etc.) just put it over the top. And the complimentary frozen yogurt dessert, and super-friendly service and suggestions from Richard (helpful referrals to other spots, like the owner's other restaurants, etc.) made a quick lunch stop that much sweeter. This place is divine! It's real easy to get overlooked though because it's on Lamar right next to a title max. Also, there is more parking out back!!!! Let me get down to the food real quick I ordered the Banh Mi with chicken and it was delicious. It's kind of like a sub? Or at least that's what it reminded me of. Any how, the inside had shredded carrots, pickles, onions, cilantro, and I think cucumber. The chicken had like some type of teriyaki sauce on it. It also came with some flat type of tator tots that were absolutely delicious!!! The bread to chicken ratio on this sub was a little off, I was longing for more chicken, but still delicious. The coffee!!!! Was AMAZING!!! It kind of reminded me of a cold brew? Like it was kind of bitter but sweet at the same time, by the end of it, I was longing for more. I recommend trying the coffee!!! Chicken "confit" is boiled shredded chicken, definitely no slow cooking involved there. Great place to try if you are in a mood for some authentic Banh mi or Vietnamese street food! The owner suggested items such as the fermented sausage skewers, pork belly banh mi, and Vietnamese street style tea that is freshly made everyday. His inspiration is to bring authentic Vietnamese street food that he grew up with into Austin. My friends and I ordered the pork belly and lemongrass banh mi. Both were extremely good and flavorful, but I definitely recommend the pork belly. In light of their grand opening, the owner served us additional appetizers and drinks for free! The Vietnamese style tea consisted of sugar cane, artichoke tea, and other tea ingredients that I forgot when he described to us. Tea flavor is light and refreshing, complementing the rich flavor food. Fermented sausage sticks were served with fresh cucumbers, carrots, and radishes placed on the side with chopped green onions. As bonus, we also got a yogurt style ice cream. It was served in a tiny bag that is tied with a rubber band. To eat, use your teeth to open a small corner of the bag and slowly let the ice cream melt and eat from there. The flavor is tart and a great ending to your meal. Starting next week, the owner will be adding more street style skewers to the menu as well as noodle soups such as pho for the cold weather season. I don't get up to North Austin much... Only when I need to stock up my Asian pantry. Was up there earlier last year and as I was driving down Lamar... A little voice from the Restaurant Gods must have whispered in my ear to look right and there was this tiny little sign that has intrigued me ever since. As soon as I could, I looked up what I remembered of the sign and I found this little place. It took me almost a year to actually try it and boy... Was I in for a wonderful little culinary treat. Two girlfriends and I met there a few weeks ago and we all loved it. Since we had never been there before, the gentleman at the counter was kind enough to make us a sampler tray of the different Baos Oh.... What a delight! Our intentions were to try the sample tray and than order more of the menu but the delightful softness of the buns with the irresistible filled meats had us just order another round. We did order the fermented pork sticks... Not a great name but it's a must to try. The grilled pork with the pickled veggies, a little crunch of peanuts and the side of fresh Jalapenos from the Bao was enough to make my taste buds dance!! I am so looking forward to going back and trying the rice platters and the size of the pho bowls have me wondering what tasty surprises do they hold. This spot is great. I've been maybe a dozen times and it's never disappointed. They do a good job curating a fresh and interesting take on Vietnamese. One thing that I really appreciate is the quality of meat, as much as I love Vietnamese, generally the meat is trash. Not at Heo, their chicken, beef and pork is on point and comes in a generous portion. Overall this place is a great value and option for people in the Brentwood/Highland area (the plate pictured costs $8.99). I was greeted by what seemed to be the manager or owner. He was super friendly and walked me through the menu. I decided to get the lemongrass bahn mi and pork belly bao to-go. While waiting, I noticed the amount of outlets this place had to offer. I wish some of my favorite coffee shops had accessible outlets like this. My food was delicious. The bao was juicy and the bahn mi was great! I'm in the middle of eating it while typing this review. After a year of driving by, my daughter wanted Pho. I called Heo to see if they have pho, they do. It's beef - and it's some of the best pho I've ever had. Definitely the best pho in Austin. The guy who runs the place is super-nice and knowledgeable. The inside is cute and extremely clean. The menu is focused, so my family tried almost everything on the menu. Fabulous!! There were 7 people in our group, and all of us absolutely loved what we ordered. In total, we had all three kinds of bao, the duck banh mi, and the turmeric fish and beef rice boxes. I had the chicken bao and turmeric fish. The meat in the bao was very generous, beautifully caramelized, tender and juicy. The fish was very well spiced, and came with a wonderful rice, and both pickled and roasted veggies. The tastes won all of us over, and the service was efficient and friendly. As a San Diego native and wife of a Vietnamese man, I have very high expectations when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine. I found this place on Yelp! and couldn't pass up the opportunity to stop by during my visit. WOW. I am so glad I did!! This place surpassed my expectations by a long run. And it wasn't just the food, the service that we received from Adrian made the experience all the more pleasant. For starters, there a few parking spots in front of the establishment and a number of other spots in the back. The restaurant is on the smaller side but very spacious and quaint. We were greeted immediately upon entrance and were explained the menu. My husband and I ordered the following: 1. Pork belly steambun (OMG! just order it and thank me later) 2. Cottage Fries aka tater tots (I love potatoes and this was amazing!! It matched the food too..that surprised me to say the least!) 3. Lemongrass beef rice box (yum x100) 4. Came here for lunch during a Friday lunch hour. There was no line. I ordered, sat down, and my order came quite fast. I had the Turmeric Fish rice box, which came with a side of grilled vegetables, and a side of pickled vegetables. I am normally not fond of dishes that are sweet, but the Turmeric Fish had a perfectly balanced flavor of sweet and savory and spices. The rice has many layers of complex flavors including: butter, garlic, and nuoc mam gng (ginger Vietnamese vinaigrette). Fermented pork was a little dry; it lacked the kick of umami usually associated with traditional nêm nuong. Moreover, the pork belly bun was a little overpriced for the quality and flavor it delivered. Bun Belly, a restaurant down the street, offers a similar quality pork belly bun for less. Heo Eatery is one place I consistently tell my friends to go visit! Heo means "pork" in Vietnamese, so you gotta try the pork Vietnamese sandwich (bang mi), pork baos, and the pork rib rice box. The fish box and the pho actually are pretty good as well. The pork rib rice box is my FAVORITE, and I'm tempted to get it every time I come. The rice is SO good, I'm not sure what they do to it (how they season it) to make it so yummy. The roasted veggies are also amazing- and I don't typically call myself a veggie lover- but I eat it all every time! I also love the tater tots and the pickled veggies. read more
