I ordered an Aperol Spritz. I watched the bartender make it...Aperol gin and soda. I questioned it, asking about the gin and no Prosecco. She said she put Prosecco in it, but she clearly did not. Because I watched her make it. She was not happy that I showed her the recipe and told her to re-make it. We got attitude the rest of our time at the bar. I have been a bartender... not ok!! Not sure what to think going into it based on the reviews, but we really enjoyed our experience. It wasn't crowded at all for a Saturday lunch. The menu isn't super extensive but had options it seemed for lots of different tastes. We got the fig and bleu flat bread, and the tavern burger. Both were delicious. Fries had some seasoning that was really good and were nice and crispy. Also got coffee and it was one of the highlights - nice and smoothly brewed, apparently locally roasted. Pricing of everything was pretty typical for St. Paul and reasonable for sure for downtown St. Paul. Loved the ambience of the old building with the high ceilings and original trim. Everyone was very attentive and the chef came out to make sure we were satisfied with our food. We'll definitely be back. read more

Then we were ignored for twenty minutes, despite five or more staff coming in and looking at us, then chatting with coworkers. The bartender looked right at us several times with nothing else to do. This is our second time returning here for lunch and we had a good time. We stopped in and only had to wait a short while before being seated at the bar. The hostess offered us drinks after a short wait but we were still undecided so we ordered in whole when the bartender checked back in. For the place being mostly empty the service was a bit slow but nothing really to complain about. However, the last time we'd been here it was incredibly slow service as well so it felt a little familiar. There menu features classics made upscale with the prices to match. Expect to pay $20+ for an entree - even if it's just a burger and fries. The food however has been consistently good when we've been there. The Mac and cheese is excellent and today we tried their BBQ flatbread with pork belly added. The flavors all worked together great and the crust was the perfect balance between bready and crackery. Our side was forgotten at first but the bartender remedied it immediately when we brought it to his attention. Our bartender was friendly and provided good service. This is a good place but there just a couple adjustments that could be made to make this great. We had two drinks - one of them with berries muddled in that made it a bit hard to drink and the other a Smokey Paloma that lacked creativity - that each ran for $15+ a piece after tip. They have a large dining room and bar area available with windows looking out towards the landmark center which is a nice view. The class level of this place is fairly high and we will return to check it out again. We appreciate their menu and hope to see the cocktail list and the customer service match soon! read more

The roasted duck stew was very good as was the old fashioned. The service didn't seem to be a priority with the bar staff, they were good at making themselves look busy without doing much? There were four people working the bar, 7 people sitting at the bar and 2 tables with 2 each at the tables. It took 20 minutes for a cup of stew and just as long for my drink order to be taken. If you ask for a glass of water be sure to ask for it over ice or it will come straight up. read more

I was feeling 3 stars for environment and service, but only about 1.5 for food, so I'm giving Herbie's on the Park an underwhelming 2 stars. I'm not necessarily a Herb Brooks fan (the restaurant was inspired by his hockey legacy), but I did find the story behind the restaurant compelling and was even more intrigued that it's located in the Minnesota Club in downtown Saint Paul. Perhaps, I was expecting too much? I'll start with the 3 star environment and service :) We decided to sit out side because the weather was beautiful and there was live music in the patio area. It was full outside and empty inside, so we decided to go with the crowd on this one. The patio area was full, but it didn't feel crowded. We got the last table, which was nestled in the far back corner - perfect for some privacy. The waitress came to our table right away, greeted us and asked for any drink orders. She came back just enough times to check on us throughout our dinner, our food came out after an appropriate wait and there were other bus boys taking our dirty plates and giving us water throughout as well. We felt well taken care of all while enjoying the talented trio playing guitar, drums and stand-up bass. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite match up. We ordered the mussels ($13), Cobb salad ($13), roasted chicken ($23), Herbie burger ($15), fries ($7) and creamed spinach ($7)- we like to order a lot of food when we're trying new places. The fries were soggy. The Cobb salad was extra NOT extraordinary, I literally only got one small piece of avocado in my salad and the bacon was hard. The mussels lacked flavor. The roasted chicken was actually perfectly cooked, but I did not like the flavor and was not a fan of the broth that the mashed potatoes swam in. The Herbie burger was only okay, we actually talked about all the other burgers in the city that this burger paled in comparison to and the creamed spinach will not have us going back for more. My boyfriend and I stopped in here after making reservations at Saint Dinette before realizing that a saints game would stop us from parking. We were shocked to find Herbies and the park it overlooks almost empty. We got greeted right away by the staff who allowed us to pick literally wherever. We ended up ordering basically all the apps. My favorite was the fried cauliflower which was spicy and had curry flavor. It might be tied with the Bacon Bleu Brussels. The Elote on the fries was more like creamed corn with toppings but still delish. Everything was very fresh and yummy. Excited to come back and get a meal. My one reason for 4 stars is because although we were greeted and seated promptly and courteously, the person who actually served us made it extremely clear she didn't want to be there which is a bummer and took away from the experience. The Ambiance is beautiful - this building is the old mn club. Started off with two confused hostess with our reservation but they finally got it figured out :). Had a burger and Caesar salad- burger was fine, cooked correctly to order. French fries were hot with a nice coating to them. Caesar salad too much dressing- soaked lettuce and made it soggy...Nope. I was disappointed in my drink - I ordered an old fashioned and asked for just a splash of their maple Simple syrup and some extra cherries. The drink came with a lot of the syrup- way too sweet for my liking, and only one marichino cherry - not even the good dark cherries - for what I paid for the drink they need to get good dark cherries. Good to know: I checked in on Yelp and instantly received a Free Starter with Entree notice. Yay!! Plus if you park in the underground ramp next to Herbie's you will stay warm since it's connected to the Xcel Center and next to Herbie's. Parking is $20 on event night. Definitely worth not having to walk 2-3 blocks and still paying $20 to park. I've seen past reviews commenting on the slow service. I stopped in on Saturday before a MN Wild game. We were greeted and seated instantly. Our server stopped by quickly to fill water glasses and take a beverage order. We arrived about 5pm and by 5:30 the place was getting packed with Wild fans. Our drinks were served quickly, and our server checked in often. The cocktails were good and not overly boozy or strong. We ordered the flatbread, brussel sprouts, scallop pasta and risotto. All were very good. The brussel sprouts were very good and a decent portion for sharing. This place is very cool in a historic building with a beautiful fireplace. When I learned that there was a statue of Herb Brooks next to a Brooks-themed restaurant in downtown St. Paul, I knew I had to make a short Uber ride over from Minneapolis to check it out. The 1980 Winter Olympic upset of the USSR by the Brooks led U.S. hockey team is a HUGE memory of my childhood and a landmark moment in not only sports history but the history of the United States. In finding Herbie's, tucked in behind the hockey arena in downtown St. Paul, seeing the statue of Brooks almost brought a tear to my eye. His gold medal ring and a few collages of him inside were very cool: a touching tribute without being touristy or cheap. As we were preparing to head to some tailgating for a Twins game we didn't eat, but the menu looked amazing. And yes, my girlfriend's Bloody Mary was very well made and my Finnegan's Irish Amber was perfectly poured and hit the spot. John the bartender was very professional and the source of many great stories. We had an awesome experience at Herbie's. We took our mom for a late Mother's Day brunch. Once again we tried a new restaurant. This time we went to Herbie's On the Park. Warning- long post We ordered our meals with a few substitutions because some of us do not eat meat. When the food came out we were missing several items. They finally arrived a few minutes later. The French toast was a great tasting item. The other food was bland, but most things can be fixed with salt and pepper. What could not be fixed was the burnt toast, soggy sausage and the extremely old fruit that was given. My daughter decided to pick around her toast and eat it anyways. The entire time we ate and talked we were not checked on. We eventually waived the server over and we asked for an order of bacon to go to replace the sausage. She brought the bill and said she would get a new order in. The bacon came out in just a few minutes. When we opened the box we realized it came out so fast because it was barely cooked. At this point when Sarah came back several minutes later I asked her to adjust the bill for the meat and the fruit which was a substitute for another person's meat. Sarah said she would let the manager know and took the bill. The manager came over a few minutes later and asked what was going on. He said he didn't get the details from Sarah. We then had to tell him all the issues we had. He said he would come back. He came back and said he would take one meal off (the one with 2 orders of bad meat and burnt toast) and half off the other that had the bad fruit. We thanked him and then Sarah slid the bill on the table and walked away. My money to pay had been sitting out on the table since the first time Sarah brought the first bill and at this point we just wanted to pay and leave. She eventually came back and took the money and bill. For 20 minutes we sat and waited and watched her serve other table, but never come back with our change. After a full 25 minutes Tom brought the change to us and said "Here you go." We immediately left and for the first time in years I didn't leave a tip. While the server is never responsible for bad food how a situation is handled after than fact and the level of customer service received is definitely a reflection of the restaurant. Although Sarah could not find the time to come back and bring us our change she was able to come OUTSIDE of the restaurant with plates in her hand and ask why she was not left a tip. That was completely inappropriate and can definitely be seen as hostile. Once our bill was paid we should not have been "confronted" outside of their establishment. That same level of interest in us should have been given while we were trying to enjoy brunch. After getting home I called to speak to the manager and this time I got Bill. He said that the server doing that is not customary and told me to have a good day. Thanks Bill. I'll have a good day as soon as I find some good food. read more

Went here for lunch with my sister. Was disappointed that they no longer have their lunch menu. We opted to split the 1/2 lb Herbie burger. First, I was thrilled that they split it in the kitchen. Let me tell you about the burger, fabulous! The burger is made with short rib and is cooked to perfection. Lots of creamy melted cheese and onions with fresh pickle slices. My dining experience was mediocre. When I arrived to check in for our reservation the hostess podium was crammed into a very small space in the middle of the entry way. There was a couple groups waiting to check in & there was nowhere to stand without blocking the door or walkway. It made for a very awkward check in process. For an appetizer I had the devil eggs - they were an A. Next a Caesar salad - the lettuce was less than fresh, the dressing & croutons were decent. For my entree I had the wild rice risotto - it was mediocre. Our waiter was decently pleasant except when it came to paying the bill - he was a bit grabby & rough. For the first half of my experience here, I was planning to write a four star review. My mom and I stopped in to take advantage of the $20 valet parking before a show at the Ordway. It's a perfect option! Park, stop in for a cocktail and light dinner and then walk 20 steps to the theater! We were also impressed that our car was ready for us as soon as the show finished so we were on our way in minutes instead of stuck in a parking ramp. Now, here's where it broke down. This place has such potential that hoping things can turn around. Patio and interior are beautiful! Service and food were so slow - it seemed they were understaffed or not well trained. I can't decide which. Food was ok but portions were so small. Salads are really disappointing. My mom got the cauliflower salad and there were three slices of cauliflower with some lettuce and sprinkling of peppedew peppers for $12. (Eyeroll) Entrees we saw looked small and overpriced so based on our observations, burgers and sandwiches are the way to go. We did try the deviled eggs to start and they were ah-mazing!! About halfway into my salad, I found a hair. It wasn't mine and I stopped eating and showed it to our server. She seemed annoyed, although did offer to take it off our bill. Let me first start by saying I had to walk in 18 degree weather from my hotel to go here, so from the start there were high expectations. And I'm from Texas so that should say something. Once I got here I felt like I was in an old European restaurant or maybe a cigar lounge. The ambiance is amazing. However the reason I made the trek was to try the pork shank. I was not disappointed. A huge piece of pork showed up with the meat falling off the bone. It came with a somewhat spicy, but not overwhelming, harissa sauce and sided with roasted yams and cheddar grits. Since this was going to be a calorie-filled night, I opted for the bourbon apples. That dish is $24. No lie. Came here for restaurant week during lunch. The interior is comfortably classy and elegant with beautiful decor. It was a gorgeous fall day so we chose to sit outside on their patio area. The Fig Pear Toast appetizer is definitely worth coming back for! Wonderfully cheesy and sweet with the fig and balsamic and a nice crunch with each bite. The House Salad had brightly dressed fall ingredients and tasted great too. For the mains we tried the American Burger with Pimento Cheese and the BLT both with fries. The burger was really good, just short of great. The pimento cheese added a unique flavor but also made it hard to eat as cheese mixture is oozing out onto your plate with each bite. The BLT was good, I liked the addition of avocado spread to help it stand out. Fries were fries. Service was a little scattered as we were helped by 4 different people but everyone was super friendly and checked on us just enough. I would enjoy coming back for some of their appetizers and other interesting looking items on their regular menu (although this place is a little spendier). Came here for restaurant week and I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant had a great atmosphere with a huge fireplace in the middle of the dining area for extra ambiance. The food and service was great too. We ordered the mushroom bisque and fig toast as an appetizer which were both delicious. The pork shank was enough food to feed a country and the s'more dessert was good too. I have Herbie's only 4 stars though because I felt the mashed potatoes had too way too much horseradish and they ran out of both the Cabernet wine I wanted and both desserts which were listed on the RW menu (one being the pumpkin creme brûlée which I was looking forward too). We stopped in after a show for a late dinner. I got the Buffalo wings and deviled eggs. The Buffalo wings were super soupy with blue cheese sprinkled on top. Not the best iteration. It's a big mouthful of blue cheese followed by Buffalo sauce soup. The deviled eggs had slightly green yolks, were warm and the bacon and little red onion just didn't do it quite right. I'd hit up Bellacour if you want some tasty deviled eggs. Pass on the eggs here. No little wet nap with the soupy wings. You're left with that crunchy polyester restaurant napkin. Service was non existent, then slow. Pleasant, but management had clearly planned badly and cut too many servers. The space is beautiful with gorgeous leaf chandeliers. I'd go back for a glass of wine and the beautiful space, but I probably won't risk food again. read more

Salmon with asparagus and white beans, good, but a little small. Roasted half chicken with a very tasty Caesar salad. Chicken was super moist and not dry at all. Herbie burger which came with really good fries and a good bun. New York Strip Pappardelle Pasta And one restaurant week choice of mushroom risotto, pear toast, and a huge crock of appl berry crisp with a little jar of ice cream. Everyone liked their food choices. I wish there had been a few more choices to choose from, but mine was still good. Wonderful presentation. This is in a beautiful location and a very nice space. When we got tickets to a performance at the Ordway, we made reservations at Herbies- you can't beat the location. They were busy at 5:30 (too early for our usual time to eat) with others going to a 7:30 show. The service was fine with it being busy but the food was lacking. We started with the goat cheese beet bruschetta appetizer. There were 4 nice slices but the balsamic glaze was so heavy it overshadowed everything else. It said it had pecans but it was served with walnuts. When we asked about that, the waitress said "oh, they must have run out and made a substitution." My sweet potato risotto was flavorless and the accompanied piece of bread was highly seasoned. She never came back to check on our food. I took one bite of bread - my husband did the same - and left it. I didn't eat much. My husband had a large Cesar salad with chicken. There was lots of lettuce but there was nothing to set it apart. I wasn't even sure it was worth bringing the risotto leftovers home. I added cheese and chicken for lunch today and that helped but I am eating around the rice. I'm not sure we'll be back. read more

We went here to enjoy one of the last days dining outside on a patio. At first we were the only ones out there around 5pm on a Sunday and then it filled up because of the Ringo Starr concert next door at Ordway. It was fun seeing people dress for the occasion. Rachel was our server and she was excellent, attentive, and offered great selections for us to choose from. The mushroom bisque with truffle soup was tasty, creamy and flavorful. No salt needed to be added because of the robust garlic taste. I had the salmo, it was awesome and had a great taste of sweetness from the cashew gremolata. The accompanying white beans were tender and delicious and the asparagus was al dente cooked perfectly. My husband had the recommended the craft It had a sweeter taste from the BlackBerry mostarda spread and he loves the burger medium rare and it was topped with pulled pork. A unique combination.
