We had been once before, in the winter. It was lovely to sit by the fire and the food was really good. When we got tickets to a performance at the Ordway, we made reservations at Herbies- you can't beat the location. They were busy at 5:30 (too early for our usual time to eat) with others going to a 7:30 show. The service was fine with it being busy but the food was lacking. We started with the goat cheese beet bruschetta appetizer. There were 4 nice slices but the balsamic glaze was so heavy it overshadowed everything else. It said it had pecans but it was served with walnuts. When we asked about that, the waitress said "oh, they must have run out and made a substitution." My sweet potato risotto was flavorless and the accompanied piece of bread was highly seasoned. She never came back to check on our food. I took one bite of bread - my husband did the same - and left it. I didn't eat much. My husband had a large Cesar salad with chicken. There was lots of lettuce but there was nothing to set it apart. I wasn't even sure it was worth bringing the risotto leftovers home. I added cheese and chicken for lunch today and that helped but I am eating around the rice. I'm not sure we'll be back. read more

This place is great! I went after a Wild game because it was so close. The interior is grand looking. The bar is huge right in the middle of tall bar tables and the other side has seating for dining. We came here after the game when they only had their late night food menu. My boyfriend works close and said that the wings were really good! So we ordered the garlic buffalo wings. They come out as 4 whole wings with blue cheese crumble sprinkled on them and a side of blue cheese and ranch. I noticed they didn't come with celery, which would have been nice. But, my boyfriend said he's gotten them during the day and he thinks he remembered they came with celery. Other than that and them being crazy messy to eat because they were whole, they were amazing. Probably the best flavor and cooked to perfection. I am a huge fan of buffalo wings so I had pretty high expectations of this place especially since the menu items were on the pricier side. My boyfriend doesn't like buffalo sauce very much and he was the one that chose. I was surprised. I completely understood when I tried them though. They are worth the money. Also their mule cocktail is DELICIOUS. I think we both had 3. Anyway come here it's great. Also I hear they have good happy hour on the weekdays! read more

This was our first visit. Service was horrible. We had to go find someone every time we wanted a drink, to order, etc. We had a guy take our order but only after we asked someone to send him over and then we never saw him again. We wound up getting up from our table to go order drinks from the bar and also to get some salt and pepper. Food was lukewarm and bland at best - very "meh". The manager comped us our cold mashed potatoes and the beer we had to get up and order. On a bright spot the location is pretty amazing. read more

I really wanted to like this venue but it seems some of the staff is stuck in the good ol' days. Visited this lovely architectural establishment with my family to see if we can warm some of our souls with spirits. I say "some" because half of our group are teenagers and younger. A few of us sat in the common area and a few of us posted up at the bar. As the adults were looking through the spirit menu at the bar, an older / wiser worker of the venue approached the younger crowd of my family and voiced that we needed to purchase items in order to even sit in the common area. I found this odd, as the common area (or maybe it was an extension of the dining / dinner area...could be wrong) only had one family who was finishing up their meal and the rest of the area was desolate. We explained that half of our group was already in the process of purchasing spirits but the sage worker wanted everyone in our party to purchase items. This surprised us, as we were already contributing to the venues' success and fortune by supporting the business. Rather than confronting the issue, we decided to finish up our business at the bar, gather our family members and bid this place adieu. Majority, if not all, of the adults were disappointed in how we were handled by one of the staff but we are not going to let it bring our trip down. The bartender that served us (shout out to North Dakota by the way...not from there but she was the light in all of this) was delightful but the fact that we felt obligated to purchase items just to stay and wait made us uncomfortable. Service: terrible. Three of us sat at the bar hopping to get a drink and maybe some food, but not one of the three people working behind the bar would even make eye contact with us. We moved to another group of chairs on the other side of the bar, trying to make ourselves more visible. The bartender made eye contact finally and continued serving the person next to us, and never came back to offer us service. He actually removed the menus from the gentleman next to us, but didn't offer us menus. We waited another few minutes before leaving. We wasted about 20 minutes. Made a reservation to dine at Herbie's because we were going going to be at an event at the Xcel center. Turned out they were hosting a "Brunch with Santa", even better. Made our reservation, and arrived only to be offered a high top in the bar (please note: I am with a 5, and 8 year old and noted in the reservation "Brunch with Santa". Also I linked to the reservation sign up from the brunch with Santa page), or a "table waaaayyy in back" (per the super grumpy, overwhelmed hostess". We opted for the table way in back. While we waited for the server, we noticed the "brunch" menus we were expecting were lunch menus. We arrived slightly before 1pm, brunch with Santa was advised until 1:30. When the server came over, I inquired and he said brunch ended at noon. Hmmm. The server dropped off water, but did not ask for a drink order. He left (also frazzled and overwhelmed). We proceeded to wait 15 min for him return, but it never happened. We decided to leave and grab lunch elsewhere. I can't review the foods or drinks because well, didn't get there. I can understand being busy and understaffed, but the rudeness and plain disdain for having to interact with guests is a no for me. Also- promoting a "brunch with Santa" usually means you're ready and prepared for families and a busy few hours PLUS an event at the excel catering to kids/families. Topper? No Santa visit. I work DT St Paul, and live in Mpls. The dining choices are endless. I would highly encourage skipping this place if you have the option. Can't imagine they make it much longer. read more

Good, not great. Burger was legit. Pre dinner bread was nice, came warm with butter. Got steak bites and walleye cake for apps, both solid. Good fries. Great service. Came by during restaurant week. If I could give it a 3.5 stars, I probably would. We had reservations for a Thursday night around dinner time. The restaurant wasn't all that busy. I read through a few of the reviews saying that the service was bad...maybe that's just at the bar? I actually had pretty good service. The decor and atmosphere is pretty generic upscale restaurant. So, let's just move on to what I really care about, which is the food and booze. The food portions were a little on the large size, though not quite chain restaurant big...just enough to bring some home big. Cocktail: Old Fashioned - was pretty damn delicious with an actual square ice cube. The only sad part...my cherry was mashed up at the bottom under my orange slices, not just the peel, but slices Food: Pear Toast - This was actually very good, everything on the toast balanced very well Caesar Salad - It's not what you expect. It's layers of romaine drizzled with caesar dressing, and topped with shaved pecorino and kalamata olives. it's more than you think it will be and it's delicious. oh...and a whole piece of "crouton" that you'll have to find a way to chop into pieces Wild Mushroom Risotto - It was quite good, though I'd go to say that the risotto was a little undercooked Duroc Pork Shank - The pork was definitely fall off the bone and delicious, the grits.. seemed a little undercooked and the harissa packed a punch, which I liked, but took my friend by surprise Apple Cranberry Crisp - This was delicious, though I only ate half of it. Good thing it keeps well, it comes with a small side of vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel Homemade Pie - tonight was banana creme, if you like banana, their homemade pie is the way to go...or any other flavor I'd bet. If you are in the area, Herbie's is the perfect spot to relax and have a glass of wine, cocktail, beer or whatever. Named after Minnesota's famed son Herb Brooks, the lounge is a wonderful monument to a the man and great hockey mind that lifted so many of us up. If you're watching a play next door, come to Herbie's before or after. Also take note of the two paintings dedicated to Herb Brooks. One is over the fireplace and the other is down the hall, kind of hidden unfortunately, near the restroom. read more

The wings are good and burgers very good but plan on waiting 5-10 minutes for acknowledgment and then another 10 minutes before you get a drink. Delicious. I tried this place during restaurant week during lunch and went with a group so I got to try a variety of items off the lunch menu. Their price is similar to Kincaid's, St. Paul Grill, and Meritage but I would say the food far surpasses Kincaid's and is on par with St. Paul Grill but with a menu that is a little less traditional. Atmosphere: This building is so beautiful. Their mushroom bisque in particular is a stand out, especially for a cheap lunch at $4 a cup or $7 per bowl. And let me add that I have purchased this particular dish three times now and I don't usually like mushrooms or soup. read more

We've had a few occasions to visit Herbies already since it opened. Once for a special birthday dinner and the others at lunch for business during the week. This is the most beautiful space in downtown, inside the old Minnesota Club. Great for that special dinner or 'power' lunch where you want to impress. We had the steaks for birthday dinner and they were excellent. For lunch, the salads are a great choice with the Breakaway Cobb being our favorite. read more

We put in our food order at 6, thinking we'd have plenty of time to eat before the game at 710. 630 rolled around and we asked for a status on our food..."it's coming". 645 came and went and my clients were itching to get to the game and we said we were going to have to leave soon..."I'll go get your food". At 650 we were done, refused to pay for the food which was being delivered as we paid for drinks and were leaving. We ordered 4 sandwiches, and it took 50 minutes to get. The food was really good. Large portions, imaginative selections, served hot and in a timely manner. The drinks were excellent. Service was thorough and friendly. My 3 stars is a result of the atmosphere in the restaurant. We were there after a matinee in the middle of the summer. The restaurant was dark and a bit gloomy. It's a beautiful space but not lit to the advantage of seeing it. The biggest problem was the temperature in the place. It was so cold we all needed to step outside to warm up at various points during our visit. It was very uncomfortable. We asked the manager to address the situation and were told that he didn't have control of that situation. I would not visit this restaurant again due to this problem. read more

I wanted to absolutely LOVE this place! We took my boyfriend's parents here before a Wild game because it was supposed to be full of hockey memorabilia and old school hockey charm. We made reservation well in advance thinking it would lead to a great spot! However, we were seated outside of the main bar area, which felt like more of a hotel lobby. Not a spec of hockey to be found, other than a Herb Brooks quote on the inside of the drink menu. Twice we were brought food that wasn't ours and it was clear that they are still working out plenty of service kinks. When our food did arrive it was good, but nothing amazing. Other than the pre-made burgers that looked like giant hockey pucks, the presentation was clean and modern, so that was a plus! The wait staff were kind but seemed inexperienced and a little lost. The location can't be beat and the Herb Brooks statue outside is absolutely wonderful! Again, I wanted to LOVE this place and make it our regular pre-game spot, but was left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. We are hoping to go back again for a drink at what looked like an amazing bar, but I can't see us choosing this location for dinner again. read more

We came here with a gift card, during their brunch time and it wasn't busy at all. Ordered the lobster crostini (don't think that's the actual name) as a app even though it was technically still brunch time and wasn't on the menu. Really flavorful! Entrees- got the steak and eggs benedict. Sooooo good! It comes out on a lightly crusted bread that they add a little garlic to. If you're here for brunch, this is a definite. Also ordered the quiche, which was very yummy. Some bacon in it, flaky crust. What you want from a quiche. The service was good and attentive, but again we were one of maybe 5-7 tables. read more

First time here. Out of town, looking for something different from the typical chain restaurant. Parking was easy, not much going on at the surrounding event centers. A building with a lot of old character and history, did not realize it was inspired by Herb Brooks. :):) My wife had a chicken sandwich and she was very happy with it (she is a very picky eater), I had the beef short rib.....wow.....I love rib eye, and this was better than any rib eye of the top steak places in Mpls. Herbie's yelp review **NURSING/PUMPING MOM FRIENDLY!** We visited for the first time before a show at the Ordway. I wasn't sure what to expect but the menu looked good and it was! A bit on the pricey side but good. Definitely very accommodating! We had someone in our party who is hard of hearing and I asked for a quieter area for seating when I made my reservation online. We had a table in a very quiet section, which was lovely. My biggest kudos to them is this: I have an infant at home and needed to pump at some point during our dinner. I had called ahead and inquired whether there was a place for me to pump privately or if I'd have to go back to my car. The hostess said we would discuss it when we arrived. Upon arrival, she talked to Nick (who I assume is the manager) and they set me up in a private spot with plenty of space. Scheduling pumping out is hard enough let alone finding a place to do so, and Herbie's made it no big deal! Much thanks! read more

The environment will make you want to change your plans and spend the rest of your day in their luxurious, Minnesotan, atmosphere. Good food... Poor service! Waitress took our order and never saw her again. Did not server the food, that person brought the entree before the appetizers. No check to see if everything was good. No one asked if we wanted a second drink. Full water glasses, not going to happen. Manager cleared the dishes. Had to go find her to ask for the check. I've been here many times before, for dinner, drinks and for brunch. Ive always had good service and food. Several visits have been when I'm at Roy Wilkins for an event, which is why I stopped in today. I went with a few other people and I'm in no rush to go back even though I'll be at Roy Wilkins all weekend. There was one person working, that we saw, a bartender. We asked if we could sit at one of the tables around the bar, all of which were empty. We were told that she would have to check because they were completely booked all night. Keep in mind that it's 2:40pm at this time and there's no one at any of the tables and no one waiting for a table. We decided to sit at the bar and asked if we could grab chairs. We were told that all seating was first come, first serve. I won't go into all of the details, but suffice to say that we had poor or non-existent service every step of the way until we left. I'm glad she never asked if we wanted to order food, after we had to ask for a food menu, because it probably wouldn't have shown up anyway. I am so disappointed in this place! We have looked forward to coming here in the past, but I guess we'll find a new place since they clearly don't want our business. read more

I was stuck between giving Herbie's a 2 and a 4 so I went with 3. I came in not knowing anything about the location, what they served or what kind of ambiance this restaurant would be, and I walked out with the same mindset. You walk in and the host stand is at the back of the restaurant, you look to your left and you have a sports bar with tons of TVs to watch the game, but you look to your right and it's a elegant, sophisticated style seating area with dark rich colors and a warm fireplace, so two totally different moods. We got sat right next to the fireplace and our server came over read off the specials of the night and asked what we'd like to drink. On the menu there were several rotating taps so I asked the server what the latest ones were and he had no clue. We ended up ordering just a few generic pints to save him the trouble of trying to find the list. We started with their mushroom bisque soup and I wish I would've just gotten that and been done. It was delicious and rich and I wanted more and more. But alas, ''twas just a starter course. I ordered the chef special of the night which the waiter described as "basically it's big noodles with crab and shrimp in a sauce that's Alfredo and marinara combined" I forget what the specials name was, but after he described it as that it didn't sound as 'special'. It came out and the crab was still on the claw and the shrimp wasn't peeled yet, which was fine except for the fact that there was literally NO meat on any of the crab and the shrimp was undercooked. The whole dish was a mess. My fiancé got the pork shank and wasn't overly impressed either. He ordered it thinking there'd be more flavor on this giant hunk of meat, but he was disappointed. I walked out still not quite knowing what Herbie's was, but I think they should stick to the sports bar theme and cut out the nicer foods on the menu. *shrugs* read more

Went here last night on St. Patrick's day, the building is beautiful and the location directly across from Rice park is fantastic. We sat at the bar and the service was good as well. We ate the black vinegar wings which were good, a nice Asian take on chicken wings. We also had the tuna poke appetizer, it was mildly spicy and very well put together. Being St. Patrick's day we opted to eat the corned beef and cabbage, this was extremely disappointing. This meal consisted of slabs of corned beef that tasted like pieces of dry Easter ham. This sat on a bed of mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The creamed corn tasted like it was right from a can, mostly flavorless. The cabbage on top was a small garnish of pickled cabbage. Needless to say it was not quite what we were expecting. For the prices we paid to eat here I was expecting a little more than a strange Easter dinner. read more

We have visited Herbies several times, always before a MN Wild hockey game. The location makes it a good venue for pre-game festivities, but only if you want drinks as that is all Herbies has going for it. When it comes to food, look elsewhere. We have never had a single dish that made us want to return for the food, only the location. The food quality is poor and portion sizes are small. The high prices you pay are certainly for its location, not the quality or portion size. On one occasion, we had made reservations prior to game. I had clients attending with me. We met up at Herbies only to learn the reservations we made a month prior, could not be found. Regardless, a nice gentleman found a table for us. After about 15 minutes of waiting a waiter came by and took our drink order. Another 20 minutes passed and the drinks had not yet arrived. A manager then came over and told us we needed to leave because the large round corner table we had been seated at were reserved under the name of a different guest. We explained to the manager we had reservations and all he said was "I'm sorry, we still need the table". On a recent visit, following a fiends graduation ceremony at Roy Wilkins Auditorium, we decided to have a quick lunch at Herbies, hoping lunch would be better than their dinner. My wife ordered what she though was a cobb salad. By now every biker bar, diner, restaurant, and pub in America knows how to make a cobb salad. A very safe choice, that is unless you order a cobb salad at Herbies. What she recevied as a plate of old soggy lettuces, unripened tomatoes, a few crumples of blue cheese, large chunks of thick bacon that were rock hard (almost like hard jerky), and a poached egg on the side. This was definitely not a cobb salad. The salad was also drenched in salad dressing, making it impossible to eat. If I was the waitress, I would have been embarassed to put such a horrible presentation in front of a paying customer. Not to mention the portion size was similar to a side dinner salad, not a main entree salad. Shame on you Herbies. Needless to say, the local gas stations sell a better quality salad than what Herbies plated for us. Service has always been extremely slow. This most recent experience will be our last. The location is not worth the poor quality over priced food and poor service. read more

Had some time to use before an event at the Science Museum of Minnesota. And needed to get a bit to eat. I ordered the mussels and my companion ordered the American burger for dinner. The waitress pointed out the happy hour menu since we were there before 6. We ordered the "black vinegar wings". OMG they were so good. We ordered a second order after we started with our main meal. The burger was really good and so were the mussels. But I think the wigs overshadowed the other food we ordered. Did I mention they were delicious??? I hope they never take them off the menu.
