Went here for a kid-less date night and it was excellent! Our server was laid-back but friendly and available. We got the burger, graham cracker cornbread, and a 6oz steak and not a crumb was left. The steak was perfectly seared, with a slight crisp on the outside but tender, juicy and flavorful on the inside. It didn't need any toppings but the two sauces and butter mixture they provided were all exquisite, and the cornbread was a great accompaniment. I have been wanting to try this restaurant since it opened. Unfortunately, due to my work schedule I've been out of town and have not had a chance. Anyway, I finally had the opportunity on Thursday night and was not disappointed at all! Started out with the Carne Cruda and the Farmer's Plate. I could not pick a favorite since they were both excellent and full of flavor. But I'd lean to the Carne Cruda because the flavors were unbelievable if you only want to try one. We did the Sirloin steak and the Burgers for dinner. We really enjoyed how tender and flavorful the steak was. And the burger was amazing! It really depends on what you're in the mood for, but they have vegetarian options on the menu as well. This is now on my go to list of favorite restaurants in the area. read more

had a family event here last night. Service was very slow form beginning to end. The server would disappear for 20-minute stretches while our glasses sat empty. This was a table of 9 mind you. A Friday night and the place was not full, so I have no idea what was going on with her. We literally had to track her down to ask for drink refills and at the end for dessert. On to the meal. This is an eclectic American menu which seems to include a great deal of fat with most dishes. Duck fat. Long story short- the bone in ribeye was the fattiest piece of meat I'd ever been served. The same with my brothers. Desserts were excellent. I've lived here my entire 61 years and am still amazed at what passes as fine dining downtown. We had a wonderful meal last night at HERD. It's the epitome of farm to table. The owner of the restaurant owns the farm that produces all of the proteins used in the dishes. The space is a wonderful open space with a loft for additional tables. The have a decent sized bar facing a large open wall of windows that allows natural light to flood the space. The meal was wonderful. The bread service was amazing and comes with a little surprise that I won't ruin. They have a variety of seasonally variable salads we had the tomato salad which was perfectly paired with peaches and balanced with an acidic dressing and salty cheese! My wife and I split a 16oz bone in ribeye that was cooked perfectly. I wasn't sure if we'd be able to "taste the difference" in the farm raised grass fed beef but you certainly can, it melted in your mouth! They had a trio of deserts, of which our table got two and they were the perfect bookend for the meal. Service was attentive and knowledgable. We'll definitely be back. read more

Herd's food truck was setup at Cooper River Brewing last night. These guys raise their own cattle and also provide meat CSA. I had to get a burger since that is their speciality. Burger with tomato, lettuce, onion and pickle cost $10. It was on the smaller side but the meat was excellent! Great flavors you expect from a grass fed burger. They have side of fries ($3) and basket of fries ($5) available. Last night they also had wings, hot dog and pork belly sandwich on the menu. I recommend checking out the truck. I searched high and low for the perfect restaurant for our group to dine at to celebrate 2 birthdays and we unfortunately didn't have the best experience. Vibe: The overall vibe of the place was inviting and clean. The AC was set so low that we were all shivering sitting at our table, it was unbearable. When we said something to one of the hostesses and the waitress they commented that it was always like that and they were cold too. Food: We got a couple of appetizers (beef fat fries, Brussels Sprouts and the fried mushrooms) all tasted great. We originally thought of ordering burgers but the bartender highly recommended the steaks so 3 of us spent $34/each for the steak frites and 3 of us spent $60/each for the ribeye. The steaks were terrible, so fatty and we all ordered medium and they came out either as as rare or well done. Service: The hosts and runners were attentive, our waitress was so busy with other tables that we didn't feel like we were of any importance. She never once said "happy birthday" to any of the birthday guests which was upsetting because there were so many other awesome places we could have went to celebrate, but we picked this particular restaurant thinking it would be special. At one point, we ordered 2 glasses of wine, instead we got a bottle of wine and she made it out like it was an inconvenience to take the bottle back so we kept it and paid for it. Overall we were upset because it was supposed to be a special birthday dinner and a great night to celebrate but the food, service and freezing restaurant made us feel like our business didn't matter. This is a great new spot in Wageners Terrace. Great atmosphere and great service! Our server was very attentive which was especially nice since we were a little bit secluded but it was the best place to sit in the whole restaurant I thought so make sure you sit on the 2nd floor facing out into the restaurant if you want privacy and a good view of the restaurant. The bar looked nice as well so I may try sitting their next time if I just go for a drink and appetizer. Everything on the menu looked really good but we ordered the burger, porchetta, and bread service. All were very tasty but if your undecided then go with the burger since that is their signature menu item. We joked and called it the hidden burger since it was buried in fries but that wasn't a bad thing. We'll be back for sure! read more

Very unique and delicious. I've been meaning to try Herd, but against my experience I made an assumption that it would be generic. I was pleasantly surprised. Located near Hampton park, it's easy to miss with its inconspicuous exterior. Walking in I immediately knew it was a place I wanted to take time in and could relax. The decor is modern and natural. The bar has floor to ceiling windows letting in so much light. Overall, it's a very open space. Service was friendly and casual. Staff was eager to explain anything in the menu and offered great tips. The bar was definitely a FULL bar. They had great wine, beer, and cocktail selection. I had the chicken pot pie for my main and it is definitely not your generic pot pie. It came served in a large bowl and was more like deconstructed. Top with a very good puff pastry, there was no other crust in it. I didn't miss the crust, because the chicken was creamy, had a good kick, and the vegetables FRESH. The veggies were so flavorful and cooked perfectly. Even the celery was slightly crispy. I will definitely be coming back! read more

Let me start by stating that this review has nothing to do with the quality of the food or the level of wait-service, or the ambiance or the decor. It has to do with the lack of respect that I was shown as a customer, with a legitimate complaint, by Alec Bradford, listed as the owner of record. On Tuesday night Dec. 14, I dined at Herd Provisions with my wife, and another couple. Dinner was served promptly and efficiently. We ordered a cocktail and some wine. When I got my check, I noticed that it contained a $3.00 Martini Charge and a $5.00 Rocks charge for "ICE" . My wife had ordered a House Vodka (New Amsterdam) which was charged at $7.00 and then the Martini charge (which I am told is to pay for the labor of shaking a martini and adding an olive.) I had ordered a Jamesons on the Rocks before dinner and one during dinner. This was charged at $11 each, which is outrageous (you can buy the whole bottle for $36). When I saw the charges, I asked for the manager. An individual approached the table and demanded to know "what my problem was'? I asked what the "Rocks" charge was for. He then told me that "all drinks served on the rocks got a "larger pour". I told him if he was going to charge me for the ice, I wanted a to-go-cup because I was going to take the remaining ice with me. iHe again stated that he wasn't charging for "Ice" and that I had gotten a larger pour. I said that I did not ask for a larger pour. He then said that was the House Policy and that every Restaurant in Charleston does the same thing. When I told him that he was wrong, he came belligerent, refusing to listen to anything else. After realizing he was not making any accomodation on the bill, I said that I would not be returning to Herd Provisions. He said he was fine with him, as I would not be welcome. I have lived in Charleston for almost 8 years, and visited many times prior to moving here. Over that period of time, my wife and I have enjoyed many fine, some not so fine and endured some really bad meals. But I have never been treated so badly and so rudely as I was last night, by any restaurant manager, employee, and certainly not by an owner, here in Charleston or anywhere else. This must be a new "Revenue source" for restaurants. Charge for Ice, tell the customer they are getting a bigger pour and hope no one is the wiser. I have had it happen 2-3 times and have always had it removed. One Manager was so embarrassed that he comped the drinks. I was not looking for that. Just don't CHARGE FOR ICE! If someone orders a coke and it comes with Ice, are they charged for it? I have resolved to ask if there is an ice or rocks charge everytime I go out now. If there is I will drink a beer or order my liqour "Neat" and have some one at the table ask for a glass of ice! I have noticed that all the negative reviews of Herd Provision have a common thread and that involves inter-action with Alec Bradford, the owner. His Bio, listed on his website, states that he left a mundane 9-5 job, and was mildly depressed. He resolved that by going on a fishing trip. Perhaps, it is time for him to book another trip. read more

Ate at herd for the first time last night and it was incredible! Beautiful restaurant and super friendly staff. We sat at the chefs table (unknowingly) and it was the most fun experience! The chef is so nice and kept bringing us new things to try. Everything was amazing. The stew and poutine were sooo flavorful and delicious. Also the banana ice cream - oh my god. Unreal!!! What a great hidden gem! This is a must in downtown Charleston. Great vibe/ambiance. All furnishings reclaimed/repurposed. Farm to table - literally...not just a new marketing scheme everyone over-uses. Our waiter Jonathan was awesome and super knowledgeable about the whole menu and wine list. So this was our first visit after reading great reviews. Signage not very clear but parking across the street worked. We arrived at 5:45 for Happy Hour. It took us a while to get oriented as the restaurant was empty and the bar at the back was too. We ordered some drinks and went out back to the patio to enjoy them. Nice space sandwiched between homes but unfortunately the flies drove us back inside. This menu must be explained to you, and fortunately our waitress took the time to sort it out for us. It's just too eclectic, strangely organized, and not your normal names for food. Everything was tasty and we ordered from starters and entrees to put together a meal. Flavors were good and food enjoyable, but service was waaaaay too slow given there were only 2 tables of customers. We all enjoyed our meals, but Rotisserie cauliflower, while a cool idea, was too bland. read more
