Farm to table eats are always appreciated! This place has a somewhat limited menu, but there does seem to be something for everyone. We enjoyed our time here, although the service was at times, awkward. Despite the fact that the restaurant was literally empty (and for the most part still was when we left), the staff didn't want us to move to a different table. They put four of us at a table that was clearly meant as a two-top and then had this stressful encounter about whether or not we could move, despite us being the only people in the place. I use to just purchase the raw milk from herd, but today we tried their takeout and I am in love!!! I've never had a chicken sandwich with so much flavor before, and my boyfriend really enjoyed the herd burger. I'm so glad we have a restaurent this close to us. read more

Herd has the best happy hour in Charleston. Affordable, delicious snacks and drinks, almost every day from 4-6 pm. We love the burgers, wine selection, kale salad, and brussel sprouts. They're really nice to us even when we bring our toddler here, and the back patio is completely gorgeous. From the street, you could never tell how spacious and beautiful the restaurant is (or that it has a giant lovely patio), and I think that's one reason it tends to be a little quieter here - it feels almost like a neighborhood secret. read more

I travel extensively for work. This place checks all the boxes, for me. Cool vibe with well thought out details, very good food, and unpretentious. It is both butcher shop and restaurant. I had a braised pork over collard greens and sweet potatoes and it was cooked perfectly. Two other Service was on point. Others had steak and frites and gave it high marks. Okay, downside is the four top tables are on the small side. There were three of us and we would have struggled with a fourth. The menu is small with not many choices for a vegetarian or pescatarian. I get it is a butcher shop but my wife would not have enjoyed the experience as much as I did. I will certainly return but if my wife is with me, I will have to check the menu before. This was our first dining experience outside of our home since COVID started. The view from the street does this space no justice... the patio area was so nicely put together - great ambiance - they gave us blankets for warmth and kept the heaters close. What a flavorful experience! It is clear that the owner is very involved in every aspect of his business. We were a party of 4... enjoyed a few bottles of wine (great menu - not too many and in all price ranges!). We all ordered from the specials menu - the ribeye was one of the best I've ever had (and coming from LA I've dined in some Michelin rated ones that wouldn't touch the flavor or presentation here!). The fish special was equally delicious. We are so excited to discover this in our neighborhood- we will be back regularly and can't wait for when it's safe to hang indoors. I'd like to write a longer review but I will need to return to update it once I've had more experiences here! Herd Provisions is a place that I only just learned of the day we went which was Tuesday as hurricane Dorian approached us. We were some of the many Charleston people that chose to stay in the area to wait it out and see if things were going to get worse. This establishment catered to our needs that night! We needed one more night of social interaction before we were isolated to our homes and that was exactly what they gave us! Plenty of drink and food specials throughout the night until the ran out. We had the hurricane punch, sangria, and purple rain cocktails along with poutine and extra fries to dip in the delicious gravy. When we were leaving you could see the fresh meat selection in the case out front which made us even more curious to try there other food options! Very disappointed. Ribeye was very over cooked and dry. Overall very expensive for what you get. Not much of an atmosphere at all, employees don't look happy to be working there. Even when I asked about the $45 steak being over cooked, you don't get a visit from the manager. Came as a party of 8, all gave them a mid to poor rating. But the guy who claimed to be the owner was absolutely intoxicated, mistakenly added $50 to our bill from our neighboring table, and made us feel absolutely uncomfortable. My girls and I were referred to this place by a great client . We decided to have our Christmas dinner the 4 of us . Unfortunately it was not a good experience . It wasn't busy which was kind of unusual being the holidays but okay. We ordered drinks ,apps, dinner and deserts . We paid the the bill well over 600.00 which was fine but the waitress came back to pick up our already signed and paid for bills and informed us she was exhausted and was about to cry. She had worked 10 hours . It was 9:30 and trust me I was tired as well as I'm a hairstylist and had been working since 9:00 am back to back days. I felt bad for her but not professional. We get up to have a last drink at bar bc she was done .Met the owner who was a complete jerk .... So rude ! Wow definitely not my people as I'm from Charleston SC and have manners ! Anyhow good luck but the food was average .... Not good enough for me to come back and be treated unkindly . However the entire time we were kind and tipped well. Nothing gets much better than their specialty--the HERD burger--and it was well worth the wait for their first brink-and-mortar restaurant to open its doors. After learning HERD officially opened today, my husband and I were anxious to check it out for lunch. I found the open, airy layout and rustic, clean design with artistic "flair" a nice surprise for a family-owned restaurant. The staff was friendly and the service was great. Generations of Virginia grass fed beef make Herd's food truck unique. These folks are devoted to their passion of serving only quality beef. We had the opportunity to try them at a private event. Try that chili. The Fritos on the bottom of the bowl were a wonderful surprise. The good quality of beef in the chili is evident. The Herd burger is good, but perhaps a bit small. Poutine was ok. Brussels were good, but the Shoyu made them pretty salty. Did not try the Veggie. Why would I? Herd is known for its beef! read more

EXCELLENT!!! After just moving to Charleston from Arizona, we are checking out many establishments looking for our new favorites. And did we find a winner with Herd Provisions! The newly constructed building is located in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood. My family and I stopped in just days after Herd opened and had a great experience. The staff was welcoming and our service was excellent. We sat at the bar and ordered melt in your mouth burgers. The kitchen prepared the medium-rare burgers perfectly. Our bartenders were very attentive and conversational as they mixed up our cocktails. We loved learning about the families' farm to table concept. The soon to be open back patio looks quite nice. If you're looking for a new downtown restaurant with a great vibe and convenient & FREE parking, we highly recommend heading over to Herd Provisions. This spot was really awesome coming in. The amazing meats and butchery are top notch. It's a big shame the owner is a complete and total elitist. One of the most shameful experiences I've encountered from an "owner" of an establishment. We showed up to play music and of course Robert Alvarez is a crowd pleaser. But the owner decided to treat us extremely passively until it got to the point where I myself was ordering my 2nd drink of the night and was told to "get out" .... Granted we all can drink but to be sober, cordial, and managing the Herd's music that night..... big shame from a passive aggressive owner. Not to mention the icing on the cake, where he decided to grab my artists tips while he was playing to make a point that he wanted us out of his establishment. Maybe next time do not pay for 2 hours of music... but to harass good well known Charleston people. Boy what a shame I will never be back for that read more

Don't miss this hip, friendly vibe, 2 story, restaurant where the owner supplies the restaurant and butcher shop with meats and veg from their Virginia farm. Our monthly dInner club of 5 came here for our January 2020 "meeting". Cocktails are creative and expertly prepared. Loved the "liquid gold" tequila creation. We took a quick peak in the butcher shop section before dinner so who could resist the charcuterie with cheese accompaniment. Home made bologna, head cheese, Italian sausage were a few of the selections. So good. We split 2 10 oz NY Strip steaks, the kielbasa and the chicken pot pie. The steaks were tender, so flavorful and perfectly cooked. Great fries. Kielbasa was fresh, perfectly seasoned and yummy. It was on a bed of small beans or peas (?) cabbage and ground beef. I loved this bed of goodness as much as the kielbasa. The chicken pot pie was shockingly bland. None of us liked it. Deserts were exceptional - soufflé, cake, chocolate ice cream. This place is a great addition to Charleston. Located near Hampton Park they source beef from a farm in Virginia where the meat is all grass fed. The chicken is from a sustainable farm in S.C. We had the burgers and bud for 10 bucks at happy hour plus a side of fries. The burger was so good. It was topped with a dijonaise, onion, white cheddar, and house made pickles. Our group stumbled onto this fabulous restaurant. We were greeted warmly and we all were very pleased with the decor and the ambiance. Not stuffy just well done. The food was fabulous. This is a restaurant for people who care about the origin as well as the taste of their food. All dishes are prepared with high quality ingredients, many of which are locally sourced. Among the excellent dishes we tried were the sunchokes, carpaccio, brussels sprouts, chicken, and parsnip cake. It was readily apparent that each was prepared with maximum care--who would have thought that chicken could be that amazing? I have had lunch and dinner at herd provisions and both were outstanding. The meatloaf was delicious on a bed of grains. I had the burger and fries for lunch and it was very good and I would order it again but it was definitely not one of the best burgers I've had in Charleston. No seafood so you better like meat. Came for the first time about two weeks after they opened and everything was incredible. We got the carrot and tomato salads, carpaccio (HUGE highlight and an absolute must order), cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and the Herd Burger. Would order everything again. Jonathan, our server, was great at recommending dishes and describing them to us. The peach cocktail and Blackbeard cocktails were amazing. 10/10. read more
