It's trying hard but.... First visit to the Heritage Smokehouse in Govans. Very excited to see a full menu, beer/wine/liquor, and a new buildout to an old space. Two really big smokers in the back, a 20 seat bar in the middle and booths in the front. There's a lot of hard surfaces in this restaurant so when it gets full it's gonna be really loud (just sayin'). A really good playlist was heard. The menu calls for one, two or three meats served with two sides at different price points which seems like a really good way to offer their fare. There's a good selection of craft beers and craft cocktails along with a rum program. Table service is available after ordering at the bar. Value is in the eyes of the customer but dinner for under $20 is possible. From one visit I would say the sides are the stars of the show: pinto beans, collard greens, coleslaw and an OK mac 'n' cheese were sampled. BUT.... The ribs, while well-smoked with a good bark, were uncomfortably fatty (waste fat). This speaks to procurement. I'm also used to slab brisket, what I got was minced/pulled with an OK flavor. We did not order the chicken quarter which looked decent on some other plates. Décor is minimal but hopefully evolving. Overall a good addition to Woodrow's, Blue Pit and other BBQ joints but still has a long way to go to generate return customers. read more

My friend recommended the Heritage Smokehouse, so we tried it out last night. When we entered the restaurant I saw a lady filling water bottles for the customers. It appeared to be filtered water, which impressed me. I later discovered that it wasn't filtered at all and had a four odor. I ordered the smoked ribs and my friend had the Brisket sandwich, we both had the dirty rice. We didn't have to wait very long to get our food and the dirty rice was very good. My friend was enjoying his Brisket and gave me a sample, it was very tasty. When I first saw my ribs they looked large and very meaty. Then I bit into one and found my mouth full of greasy fat. I then deconstructed the remaining ribs to find the actual meat, not the fat. I had about 60% fat left on my tray and very little of the dry meat. If you are someone that loves fat, then you'll be happy. I'm not! I didn't take any photos. I didn't want to disappoint my friend. The price of half a rack of fat was extremely high. Absolute tens across the board. I had the best hambuger I have ever tasted here. The brisket was also great. All of the sides like mac and cheese and sweet potatoes were amazing. We were expecting a general bbq food joint (which is a good thing) but were really wowed by the thoughtful & inventive food, knowledgeable service, and good vibes. We were a group of six and tried a bit of everything, all of it fantastic. This was our first time getting a table since we typically sit at the bar. I almost gave up looking for good BBQ in Baltimore cause I never found a spot I re wanted to visit until now. The bbq was beyond amazing and let me tell you those ribs just fall right off the bone. My wife says these are the best ribs and brisket she has ever had. Service is OUTSTANDING-ly sweet and helpful. I don't eat pork, beef or chicken but have really enjoyed the smoked trout and shrimp as well as the potato salad, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, yucca, and my fave - the wedge salad (I know, but it's so good). Our son loves the kids' brisket with a roll, pickles and mac/cheese. So, i have been following George the owner from when he was at Parts and Labor, to pick up orders in Belevedere market during the early part of Covid. I had been meaning to try his spot. First of, i did pick up, the order took a while to come out and they run out of brisket pretty early. They did swap my order out and didnt charge me. The drinks i had while waiting were fantastic and decently prized. I say so because lately a lot of establishments are charging $14-15 for cocktails lol. They do have cocktails in that price range as well lol. Anyhow on to the food, i have noticed which i think is kinda ridiculous some restaurants have to-go menus and sit down menu's at different price points. I get the point, but just ridiculous to me. The bbq was solid, i think it is kinda pricey but it was good. I had a german potato salad, chicken in place of the brisket and chopped pork shoulder. I've been in Heritage 3-4x in the past year and it's always good. Great beer, decent crowd and very nice staff. Also, they typically have good cartoons or sports on the TVs! Last night(8/2)I got my usual smoked wings. While the flavor was there, the skin was damn near inedible. I believe they typically fry them after smoking (that's what I do when I smoke wings) and it's usually crispy-ish. Not sure what happened yesterday but I was disappointed especially at 6 wings for $16. I guess I'll stick with the brisket. read more

This place is amazing. I had the pork shoulder and it was perfect and juicy. It came with a mustard- vinegar style sauce which is definitely my favorite with pulled pork, so I was thrilled. Even aside from the BBQ, the sides are incredible. They clearly put a tremendous amount of care and thought into everything they do. I loved the little touches - the pickles came with a small yellow hot pepper that was great to take a bite of now and then. We ordered a side of fried yucca - each piece was fried to perfection and the tomatillo sauce with it was smokey and just a little tart. Now that I think if it, we ordered almost every side on the menu at our table and every one was more delicious than you would have hoped. I would definitely recommend going here! read more

This was my first time at this restaurant, super excited to visit a new neighborhood restaurant. Pros: Overall, the atmosphere and food was delicious. The decor and exterior looks amazing. Very flavorful bbq that had just the right seasonings and the sides were all tasty. I wanted ribs but they were sold so I plan to go back to try them. Customer service was exceptional. Cons: I was disappointed with the portions of the meats and sides in comparison to the price of the food. The chopped brisket and chicken was smoked well, but very small for a thigh and drumstick. Kudos to the chef who made the potato salad, collard greens and mac n cheese , all delicious, but a teaser for sure in serving size. Also, I would enjoy some traditional bbq sauce that has a thicker consistency to dip my bbq in. I'll be back, but not sure as frequently as planned. read more

I have truly tried to give this local bbq estab. a fair shake, three times I have visited & something always disappoints. Time 1 we arrived to a closed restaurant when website indicated they were open. Time two Heritage is charging $12 for all sides for which they give rinks dink portions. Then finally yesterday- placed an order for carryout and on my emailed reciept I see they charged me a $4.95 "carry out fee". 3 stars. I have ordered takeout from here 3 times. 2 out of 3 times there was something missing. 1st time was rolls and 2nd time was green beans. The only reason there wasn't anything missing a third time was because I pulled everything out before I left, noticed the rolls were missing again but the bar tender got me some. So I would say don't order takeout here and if you do check everything because they do not have quality controls in place to make sure that orders are fulfilled accurately because I live too far to drive back for rolls and green beans. Portion size is smaller than other BBQ places but worth it. Also check the menu before you come because it changes daily, not a big fan of that either. read more

Absolutely love their food--ordered it frequently during the pandemic last year. This was our first time at the restaurant. Everything looks great and smells even better! The smokers are on site and huge! We both had brisket--I had the Stewed brisket ( bowl of brisket, rice, corn and okra), my husband got chopped brisket with side of pinto beans and succotash. This was our first visit. I was hopeful because it received so many great reviews. There was a particular demographic dining there and for me that says alot about a place. It seemed more of a fusion spot than actual smokehouse. Which is completely fine, we just came with different expectations. My husband had the brisket and I had the pulled pork, and our sides were mac n cheese, green beans, and sweet potatoes. Both of our meals were barely warm. Mediocre at best. The mac n cheese was pasty and there was nothing special about either of the other sides. We decided (with regret) to try the Old fashioned banana pudding. We are both picky about our banana pudding so I asked our server "what makes it old fashioned" and he began to tell me how it was made and I promise you, there was nothing old fashioned about it. They mash the cookies into milk to make cookie flavored milk and then make the pudding out of that. When we received it, the pudding was watery with little taste and I found 1 and 1/2 slices of banana in it, and no cookies (nilla wafers, old fashioned way). I find it hard to believe all the positive reviews this restaurant's food has received. I purchased carryout yesterday for the first time and it will be my last. Ordered 2 brisket sandwiches and a large side of baked mac & cheese. Bill was $50. First, the brisket was so fatty and greasy that I had to sop up all the grease with several paper towels. After cutting off all the fat, I was left with 50% less meat. It was the worst brisket I have ever had! Second, the mac & cheese, which cost $18 for large portion, was so greasy that I could not eat it at all. Third, the side of cole slaw was so small that it was packaged in the same tiny 2 oz. containers that they use for their sauces. This was the worst restaurant food I have ever had. I don't understand others who rate the food 4 or 5. What a total waste of $50! read more
