While working just adjacent to Hey Sunshine I popped in to try it out. And what a delicious decision! I was greeted by a friendly woman (I'll assume manager or owner who was training "Zach"), and she was so warm and welcoming! She inquired if I had been before and I said "no", so she began to provide information about the amazing menu. I asked about the window special "hot sesame chicken bowl" in comparison to the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and she shared the bowl was spicy but filling and so I went with it! While I waited, she offered water (available on the counter) and I listened to how she was training Zach. She was so passionate and caring describing how to gently place bowls in the to go bags and why it makes a difference. Why some get utensils and some don't, but she cared and it showed. Her passionate care for presentation showed so much pride in the product and that alone hyped me up to already start planning my lunch for tomorrow (yes, I'll be coming back for sure!). A decently large parking lot but shared with many other restaurants and a gym. I was circling in loops in an endless line for awhile. As for the restaurant, it is pretty small on the inside and the line crowds out the door really quickly. You can order at the counter or there's one self kiosk on the side. Order, get a number, and sit at a table and they'll bring the food out to you. Self-bus the dishes afterward. My partner and I got the limited edition hot sesame chicken with crispy rice bowl, crispy chicken sandwich and for sides: Mac and cheese and chickpea nuggets. My favorites might've been the sides. Those had the best flavor of all. The bowl was good and felt healthy but was just a bit underwhelmed by flavor. All their dressings were on the watery and more runny side. A nice and refreshing find for a simple Sunday Brunch.... My friend and I both built our own bowls and my meal was flavorful, light and refreshing just like I like.... I personally got Fresh Salad Greens for the Base, Sesame Crusted Avocado for the Main, for the 6 toppings: broccoli, black beans, red onions, sweet potato, beets and cabbage; and finally for my sauce I got the lemon herb aioli.... The chickpea patty bowl was $15 and had a variety of ingredients from beets, chopped sweet potato, chickpea patty (although not crispy), cauliflower, corn, onions, kale, cranberries, lime, and sunshine rice. All of the ingredients were fresh and the jalapeño cream gave it a nice kick all together. Personally, I still love their fried chicken patty sandwich! The macaroni and cheese was delicious! With fried shoe string onions, it was flavorful and cheesy and only $4.95. The chickpea patty nuggets were yummy as well. Lightly but perfectly crispy with a tender filling like sweet potato dipped in a nice bbq sauce. I thought it was also fairly priced at $5.95. I ordered through ToastTab and picked up with no hassle. The bowl was so amazing! The sandwiches were surprisingly bland, but the hot chicken one was was okay. It has a really cute ambiance and the service was not bad, they did forget a couple of things and bring us the wrong order originally (but trying not to hold that against them since they seemed to get busy right after we got there). To my taste, the vegan "meats" were bland, nothing noteworthy. Bottom line, you cannot create flavor by adding sauces on top of a bowl, or by a colorful bevy of accoutrements like sweet corn/red cabbage/pickled onion/lettuce. I can always tell when the cooking process has used marinading, roasting, caramelization, or slow-cooking to lock in flavor from sauces that would add depth of taste to vegan meats made from whatever --whether "jackfruit fiber", chickpeas, "heart of palm" or "textured soy proten"--that are literally tasteless on their own. The bowls were less than exciting to me. This seems like another vegan fast food modeled on emulating a meat-based bowl by replacing the non-meat products. To my taste, the best vegan food is drawn from cultural knowledge honed over time with specific local ingredients, in specific combinations of meals, and eaten in specific ways. This place's offerings fall flat for me. Their base target customer probably has a more bland American palate. Appeal to the eye with aesthetic arrangements of colorful ingredients doesn't cut it for me. This place has a similar vibe to Veggie Grill but in my humble opinion, MUCH tastier! I'm not sure how long HSK has been around, but a quick search in Google Maps for 'vegan' helped me locate this West LA establishment. I came by 1.5 hour before closing. My eyes immediately gravitated toward the "hot chicken" sandwich on the menu, which of course was made with plant-based products. I also grabbed a raspberry lemon cake for dessert, but waited to eat it since I wanted to savor the sandwich first! There was a delay with my sandwich, which felt longer than it really was only because I was incredibly hungry. I was offered a side or drink on the house, which I gratefully and gladly accepted. When I asked for the coleslaw, I was given a generous portion in a bowl. Soon after getting through that, my sandwich arrived piping hot---both in temperature and flavor! It was packed with vegan mayo, the plant based chicken crisped, spiced, and HOT, pickle, cheese and two fluffy, crisp buns.
