Hot Sesame Chicken Bowl *Limited Time Only
    Cindy C.

The limited time bowl with half rice half greens was so delicious. It has a good flavor in the sesame sauce and good crunchy/soft texture balance. My mom either got the hot or crispy chicken sandwich which was hot, fresh, and had a good spice to it. The lemonade was a good tart one. The macaroni tasted like how I remember when I used to eat animal products and the crispy onions were an excellent topping. There was only one person working at the time but she was very sweet and attentive to her work. Even though there's a tablet to order from, she was ready to help and patient with me when I was ordering. The place was a bit small with tables close together but there's also outdoor seating. And there's a restroom

Sososo good! I order takeout here at least once a week because I'm always craving Hey, Sunshine! My go-to is their build your own bowl option + mac 'n cheese. The workers are CFA level friendly & my order is accurate 99% of the time. Prices are a bit high, but it's worth it considering they use quality, yummy ingredients. Will be back again next week :)

Super blown away. I'm not vegan and this was actually my first time trying a vegan restaurant. Everything tasted amazing and hit all the right flavor notes. It wasn't just "good for vegan food," it was just really good food. The staff and the owner were super friendly and welcoming which made the whole experience even better. It's also the perfect place to grab something after a workout at the gym nearby. The food is healthy, filling, and tastes great while hitting all the nutritional goals. I tried the backyard BBQ tofu, for only a little over $15! This place honestly changed my perspective on vegan food and I'd pick it over the usual fast casual spots. I'll definitely be coming back a few more times before moving. This place is the gold standard for what locally owned restaurants should be. Highly recommend checking it out, you won't regret it!

I stumbled upon this spot on Yelp, looking for a bite to eat in Culver City. I'm so happy I decided to come here, because this spot lives up to the 5 star reviews. It's located in a plaza with atrocious parking, but once you manage to snag a spot after a couple loops around, you are greeted by friendly faces at Hey, Sunshine Kitchen. There are so many delicious sounding options, but I opted for the Backyard BBQ Tofu bowl which comes with sunshine rice, BBQ tofu, sweet potato, coleslaw, sautéed cauliflower, grilled corn, diced tomato, shoestring onions, fresh cilantro, massaged kale, pickled red onions, lime, and buttermilk ranch. They give a generous portion and it's a hefty bowl. You can taste the quality and freshness of each ingredient, and this bowl was incredible. The flavors and textures of everything was perfect. Ugh, I wish they had more locations because Culver is a trek for me. They make healthy food taste like the best thing on Earth and make the experience enjoyable. I will be returning for sure and in the meantime, will be trying to recreate this at home.

While working just adjacent to Hey Sunshine I popped in to try it out. And what a delicious decision! I was greeted by a friendly woman (I'll assume manager or owner who was training "Zach"), and she was so warm and welcoming! She inquired if I had been before and I said "no", so she began to provide information about the amazing menu. I asked about the window special "hot sesame chicken bowl" in comparison to the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and she shared the bowl was spicy but filling and so I went with it! While I waited, she offered water (available on the counter) and I listened to how she was training Zach. She was so passionate and caring describing how to gently place bowls in the to go bags and why it makes a difference. Why some get utensils and some don't, but she cared and it showed. Her passionate care for presentation showed so much pride in the product and that alone hyped me up to already start planning my lunch for tomorrow (yes, I'll be coming back for sure!). The restaurant was clean and bright and takes pride in their presentation and food and it shows, look at those YELP! Awards proudly displayed on their counter!!! And they are definitely well deserved! My Hot Sesame Chicken Bowl was served on greens, came with a delicious citrus vinaigrette dressing and the freshest vegetables! hey Sunshine, everything about you is Excellent!

4.5 stars! This is an all vegan restaurant. I came by around 2pm on Saturday and it was still plenty busy! Not only was the restaurant busy, but so was the parking lot. A decently large parking lot but shared with many other restaurants and a gym. I was circling in loops in an endless line for awhile. As for the restaurant, it is pretty small on the inside and the line crowds out the door really quickly. You can order at the counter or there's one self kiosk on the side. Order, get a number, and sit at a table and they'll bring the food out to you. Self-bus the dishes afterward. My partner and I got the limited edition hot sesame chicken with crispy rice bowl, crispy chicken sandwich and for sides: Mac and cheese and chickpea nuggets. My favorites might've been the sides. Those had the best flavor of all. The bowl was good and felt healthy but was just a bit underwhelmed by flavor. All their dressings were on the watery and more runny side. I suppose that means it's healthier? The chicken sandwich was solid. Had all the fixings to hit every flavor note.

    Custom Bowl
    David Y.

I liked this place; it serves good food, but it's a bit overrated on Yelp, in my opinion. I made a custom bowl, with half rice and half salad, plant-based chicken, and a bunch of toppings, including a bunch of roasted veggies and croutons. I also got a cookie with sprinkles on it. The bowl felt nourishing and it was tasty, but I wasn't blown away. It's a neighborhood lunch spot to me, and a solid one, but not a place to go out of your way for. The cookie was just okay. Ultimately, I'm not in a rush to come back but I could see it happening.

The crispy chicken sandwich is super but the potato salad has been sitting in the sunshine too long it melted. Too soupy, like a chowder and not a salad.

Finally tried this place out and it is worth all the hype!!! My friends and I are not vegan, but we all LOVED our food! Everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious. The portions are a nice size as well. I also recommend getting the spiced hibiscus tea! The space is bright and cute with seating both inside and out, mostly 2-top tables. The staff were very friendly including the owner. They made sure we had what we needed and answered any questions we had. The restaurant is located in a shopping center which had plenty of available parking in the lot. Best casual vegan place I've ever been to! Looking forward to going back!

WE LOVE PLANT BASED OPTIONS So far, I've had the jackfruit taco, falafel bowl and the chickpea sandwich. 10/10 all around. Jackfruit taco def has a kick. I'm so happy hey, sunshine kitchen joined Culver City.

A nice and refreshing find for a simple Sunday Brunch.... My friend and I both built our own bowls and my meal was flavorful, light and refreshing just like I like.... I personally got Fresh Salad Greens for the Base, Sesame Crusted Avocado for the Main, for the 6 toppings: broccoli, black beans, red onions, sweet potato, beets and cabbage; and finally for my sauce I got the lemon herb aioli.... Service was simple and they help give you recommendations when you order, after that you sit down and they bring you your order.... Interior seating is limited but there was space I like that the place is bright and nice inside... It is quite far from me but I would try to go again.

Sweet potato fries with buttermilk ranch and pistachio Caesar dressings
    Lisa N.

Great food in a cute space. The Mac and Cheese tastes like childhood, and the fried onions were a nice addition. Excellent jackfruit carnitas taco. The chickpea patty sandwich reminded me of a filet-o-fish in a good way and the sweet potato fries were perfectly crisp and fluffy. The buttermilk ranch sauce was flavorful but a bit watery. The pistachio Caesar was flavorful and a thicker better consistency. And even the brownie was great and not too sweet. I can't wait for my next visit!

After learning about the founders' goals and commitment to support small local farmers while focusing on fresh clean ingredients that are non-GMO, plant-based, and sustainable, it is truly inspiring that Jenny and Heather have developed this beautiful women-owned kitchen! Knowing that their dedication to support small businesses increases the cost of their menu, I was enticed to come back to try their other items: the chickpea patty bowl, chickpea nuggets, and macaroni and cheese. The chickpea patty bowl was $15 and had a variety of ingredients from beets, chopped sweet potato, chickpea patty (although not crispy), cauliflower, corn, onions, kale, cranberries, lime, and sunshine rice. All of the ingredients were fresh and the jalapeño cream gave it a nice kick all together. Personally, I still love their fried chicken patty sandwich! The macaroni and cheese was delicious! With fried shoe string onions, it was flavorful and cheesy and only $4.95. The chickpea patty nuggets were yummy as well. Lightly but perfectly crispy with a tender filling like sweet potato dipped in a nice bbq sauce. I thought it was also fairly priced at $5.95. I ordered through ToastTab and picked up with no hassle. Service was quick and friendly and the interior was clean. Thanks for having me back Jenny and Heather! :) also picked up some poppy seeds today!

Hey, Sunshine Kitchen Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hey, Sunshine Kitchen

Do they list nutritional information anywhere?

Are you still conducting vegan cooking classes?

Thank you for the question! We have our 2 year anniversary coming up so we will skip our August class and hold a party on August 10th, but we will start classes up back in September! We’d love to have you join us.

    Where is best parking?

There is an open parking lot in the area. Plenty of free parking.

Do they use Nutritional yeast in their dishes? Are their chickpea burgers soy free?

Hi Chloe! We are the owners and happy to answer this question.…

Are there cashews or pistachios in the "contains nuts" dishes? I'm highly allergic unfortunately. Thanks!

I don't think so but you should check with Jenny, the owner

Are there any soy free options?

Yes it varies depending on menu item

Are there allium-free options (no onion, no garlic)?

I like the Avocado Crunch Bowl over salad greens with a lime wedge, which is onion- and garlic-free; you can also get the "build a bowl" option to customize an onion- and garlic-free dish!

Then I ordered the spring rolls (one of my go-to favorites here) and swapped the peanut sauce for the plum dipping sauce. Elite decision. The plum sauce adds that tangy-sweet vibe that makes you keep reaching back for "just one more bite." Fresh, light, and flavorful without feeling heavy. And what I really love? If you served this to a non-vegan, they might have a hard time believing it was actually cauliflower. It was absolutely delicious, and the texture was phenomenal. We also ordered a side of fries, which unfortunately fell a little flat. They were undercooked and lacked seasoning, so they didn't leave much of an impression. For my entrée, I had the Pepperoni Pizza. Overall, I enjoyed it, but the biggest drawback was that it was very salty. If they toned that down a bit, it would have been a winner. My husband ordered the Shrimp Scampi. The vegan shrimp was impressive from a texture standpoint--it was tender and even had that familiar "snap" you get from real shrimp--but it wasn't quite for me. The pasta itself was a bit underwhelming and could have used more flavor. Overall, I'd absolutely give Julie Goes Green another shot, and I would 100% order the Buffalo Cauliflower again. One final bonus: parking was easy, with a lot available for pickup orders. Just keep in mind that seating inside is fairly limited, so this is a great option if you're planning to order to-go.

Jasmine sounded unique since it's a Muslim Myanmar restaurant and there were dishes I've never seen before, and also others with Indian and Chinese influences. But in the end everyone was disappointed with the food and even left food behind instead of taking it to our hotel. We actually went for ice cream afterwards to congratulate ourselves on getting through it. Jasmine has a lovely shaded patio. You place your order at the counter with a guy who's really nice. There are only two menus and the images are faded and extremely hard to read. The best dishes (but still not great) Potato samosas - nothing special Keema paratha - This bread, filled with ground chicken, was fine but not my kind of thing. Plain naan - unusual in that it was flakier than usual. Pan Thay Kwak Swe - thick wheat noodles with chicken drumsticks. This wasn't really anything special. Avoid Tea Leaf Salad. I've had lots of tea leaf salads but never any that I didn't want to eat any more of. The flavor was too pickled. It was also spicier than usual. (I don't mind spice but didn't love the flavor.) Pae Late (J's Special). This dish consists of thin lentil fried dough in broth with chicken. Unfortunately the dough was totally soggy which ruined this dish. I didn't like the flavor of the broth either. No one wanted more of this dish, nor did anyone want to take it home. It would be much better if the fried stuff was served on the side for the customer to add like when I have samosa soup. The restaurant now occupied space direction adjacent to the ISKON Temple and Museum. It is clean, spacious, sunny, and has adjacent parking. The food was mostly bland but pleasing, as usual, and the buffet service was attentive and friendly.

Overall, the food options are a bit limited compared to the other locations, and it is full service (instead of open buffet style). But the food -- always vegan and vegetarian -- is absolutely delicious and holds very well. You can get a solid meal at less than $15, and feel absolutely light and full of energy immediately after (there does not appear to be a set price for takeout -- food appears to go $6.50 per pound). I especially love the lentils (lentil anything!), paneer and the samosas. The mango lassi is also pretty good, albiet a bit watery. The space, with the restaurant downstairs and the shop upstairs, also works very well. There is some outdoor seating -- but good luck with parking. There is a tiny lot right out front, but be cautious of neighborhood parking, as parking enforcement is very active in the surrounding area.
