Hi Spot Cafe is a lovely little place in the neighborhood of Madrona and it gives the vibe that it's been there forever. The house-turned-cafe serves up brunch classics and it's got a huge patio. Despite showing up an hour after they open on a weekend, we didn't have to wait long -- they seem like they run a pretty tight ship. I got the huevos mexicanos with home fries, and both were solid. I went at 9am on a Saturday and found plenty of free parking in the neighborhood street behind it on 35th Ave. We were seated outside on the patio and the service was quick and friendly. I've been coming to the hi-spot for over 20 years. It used to be my favorite cafe for food, quality of service and homey atmosphere (I love that it's in a charming old house). My last few times there I felt the overall vibe was different, the service lackluster, and the food had dropped a few notches. I found out that it was under new ownership as of a couple of years ago and it shows. The previous owner was always on site-friendly, circulating, and making sure everything was running well. The service is now slow and often bordering on unfriendly, but the worst thing is that the food quality has declined substantially. A server told me that the same cooks are still working there as before, so I don't know if the current management has slacked on oversight or if it's just not true. It's no longer that go-to place, in my opinion. The coffee is still good, so that is one plus. read more

Hi spot is a lovely neighborhood spot. I got breakfast there with a friend recently and had a great meal. It basically looks like a house inside, which makes it feel really homey, obviously, and we got a kick out of the fact that there's a bathtub in the bathroom. The folks who work there are really pleasant. The menu has a lot of great standard breakfast items plus some interesting ones like "green eggs and ham" and some tofu scrambles. I was feeling more of the tofu scramble kind of thing that morning so I went for that and despite it being a "healthy" meal was also very substantial and satisfying. The best location and setting ever for a cozy breakfast brunch place! I am a Seattle native, I've been coming to Hi Spot since 1992. My beautiful daughter who's 14 wanted to take me for my belated bday and so we did! when we walked in not a single staff said hello, they weren't too busy either. I began to sign in and a dude that appeared to be couch surfing style comes galloping down stairs and actually says, "HEY" as if were old buddies (so causal to be addressed as, "hey" ) He seats us Nice lady comes to ask what drinks we wait 10-15 ! minutes before I stand up and get to get a servers attention. Server acts nice yet is condescending, (she's at least 15 years my junior) not fun. We get our food and it's cold and comes in parts not on the plate all at once) as is ready in kitchen..?! I ordered the Bengal Benedict (it was a good choice once!) It was so bad i ate only the eggs on it. Didn't make the slash a Benedict can. My kid ordered the chorizo scramble and like it... I won't be returning after having come here for 31 years. I will choose to keep the previous memories, not this last trip . have fun y'all read more

Used to love coming here and ordering takeout until I was given this moldy piece of bread and never received the refund the owner offered me. I do not recommend eating here. I ordered takeout on Sunday 2/11 and my order was a little off, which was fine, but then I noticed I was eating MOLDY bread. I called Hi Spot right away to let them know to check their bread and was promised a refund. The owner himself apologized over the phone and kindly promised a refund for this health hazard. It's been weeks and nothing. Eat here at your own risk. Let me preface by saying that Hi Spot's location, atmosphere and overall feel is uniquely pleasant. The cafe's shell is a single-family house transformed into a restaurant, and the unusual utilization of the architecture makes for a very cozy and distinct experience. However, Hi Spot falls short in two key things: quality and service. The waiters, while pretty on the outside, are bland and emotionless. It feels almost as though the human brain has evolved differently for the workers of the Hi Spot Cafe. It has developed into something of a smooth, robotic sphere that can only afford to process food and drink orders. If a Hi Spot waiter's brain tried to process small talk, or- god forbid- a joke, the waiter might simply explode into space dust. Or maybe not. Not one soul in history has ever seen them try it. Somehow, Hi Spot has developed a sophisticated, streamlined hiring process to ensure that they will only hire people with the personalities of fish. Impressive! The food at Hi Spot is OK. The meals are fulfilling with good portion size. The biscuits and gravy are phenomenal. Food is on the better end of mediocre here, if you can dodge the mold or the hairy food, which Hi Spot has served me in the past. For the full experience, I might recommend bringing a hazmat suit. Come to Hi Spot for a physically cozy and emotionally cold dining experience. I have no doubt that some could enjoy the peace here that is consequent of the waiter's supreme idiotism. If that's you, I definitely recommend giving this place a try. Personally though, even if my most depraved friend was suffering from fatal levels of caffeine depravation, I would hesitate before taking him to Hi Spot Cafe. read more

Popped in for coffee this morning while visiting family in Seattle and found that this place is a great local spot. I got an oat milk latte and an iced tea for my sister. The latte was fantastic and my sister said the tea was good too. Standard prices for nice cafes, in my opinion ($9 for the two drinks). The baristas were really nice and the service was quick. I also appreciated that they were really thoroughly checking vaccine cards in an organized manner. It was just an efficient setup all around. My partner and I really, really want to like this place but it's just not it. The location is amazing, the interior is so sweet, and the food has actually been great the three times I've been (two times for my partner). However, we dined this past Sunday and we will not be returning. We were met with a snooty woman and when she took us back to our table she walked pretty far ahead and we had to catch up with her and then she just dropped the menus on the table and walked straight into the kitchen area without looking back. It's like "Uhhh okay thanks for seating us I guess?" It's also typically a 15 minute wait before your order gets taken and the system seems pretty scattered too. Like it doesn't seem like it flows well. Anyways, we were met with a blonde waitress who we had last time and she is a pretty condescending person. My partner and I were like "Oh great" when we realized it was her. She makes zero eye contact and barely asks simple questions. Also when she served us our food she just served the plates and turned around really fast and left so I didn't even get a chance to ask for the condiments I like to have on my breakfast so that just made me moody. Also we had to make sure to stack our plates and silverware when we're done to make it clear we need the bill because you will also be waiting an eternity for that and we had a huge list of errands to do so it's just sad we have to proactively do things like that to get out in a timely matter. Also nobody ever checks in to see if you're enjoying the meal. I can't imagine what it's like when you actually have a problem with the food. That being said, yes the food is great and we find it to be reasonably priced so definitely check it out just keep in mind service is kind of so so and for that reason we have no desire to return which is sad because we live so close to the area and frequent the other restaurants and bars on the same road! Who knows, we might give it a couple of years and then try again. That should be enough time for half the wait staff to move on lol. read more

Such a cute little spot...from the front I did not realize how large this place is. It looks like it used to be an old house. There are probably about 3 levels! The first level looks like a very cute coffee shop. My group and I sat on the 2nd level for lunch. I was not the first person in my group to show up, so I don't know what the initial process was, but it appeared that there was not wait and we were able to get seated right away (there was 4 of us). It was rainy this day we went, so we had to sit inside. It is not great for large groups and the 2nd level did seem to have a lot of tables, so just don't turn around too fast. We came for Friday lunch and it was very busy. So many yummy items on the menu. I got the Pacific - a salmon omelet with fresh fruit and toast with jam. The food came out very quick and staff was very friendly. This is a great place whether you just want a quick cup of coffee or a bit to eat. I would definitely come back again. Parking can be a little tough, so I had to park about 2-3 blocks away. Parking in the area I believe is free, but there is a two hour limit. If you go for lunch, you can walk next door and get dessert at Molly Moons :) read more

Quaint homey spot nestled in Seattle's Madrona neighborhood. I came here with a group of five on a Tuesday morning and it was bustling with diners. My group waited around half and hour for a table, and we waited in the cafe seating area downstairs. Once we got our table, I immediately loved the vibe of the restaurant and how it felt like we were eating in someone's cozy abode. Everything on the menu sounded so tasty, but the green eggs n' ham was calling my name. Pesto, ham, and mozz eggs? Yes please. I loved the flavor of everything on my plate and finished everything. The side of fruit was fresh, and the sourdough toast came with raspberry jam that was perfect. I tried a bite of the corned beef hash, reuben, and breakfast tacos, and all of the dishes tasted delicious. The waitresses were so friendly and made our experience dining here a great one. I read some nice reviews about this place. Came in here on a Sunday, they were fairly steady. As I walked in, the hostess just seated a family of four, but he didn't come back till literally five minutes later to see me. People behind us we're asking I wonder what happened. That wasn't really bad, it was just awkward that no one acknowledged me and the people behind us. waiter was nice. I asked what was his recommendation and he suggested the Mexican menu. The only reason I didn't want to do it because we were in American style restaurant and I thought that was their signature menu. I end up ordering the corn beef. It was not what I was expecting. All you could taste was the hashbrowns mixed in with the corn beef and the Sriracha sauce that they added in. I couldn't even taste the meat. I was very disappointed. It was cooked the way it supposed to be, just lack of flavor. But maybe that's why the dish came out with two types of sauce to go with it. One was catchup, And the other was some sort of hot sauce which I did not use as well. It's like ordering a steak with no flavor then you have to ask for A1 sauce. Might as well just eat the A1 sauce and save 50 bucks. The bloody Mary was pretty decent and there a latte it was freaking awesome! Everyone there was super nice but they're not to a tentative. I literally had a wave them down to order my bloody Mary and cappuccino. Afterwards I walked around and there were a few other places I'm going try next time. I was staying in town for a few days and the Airbnb had this menu. It was a short walk away so we went on a Thursday morning and it was quite crowded. I got the Dill, Parm and Scallion Scone with a side of scrambled eggs. The specialties menu looked amazing but I wanted something light since I was going to Pike Market soon. The Scone was as perfect as they come, great texture on the outside and fluffy inside. I asked for soft scrambled eggs and they were cooked great. My friend had the French Brioche Toast and loved it. It was around 1:15 after the lunch rush, and we stopped in.The wait staff made us feel so comfortable, and were so warm and helpful we felt like were treated like royality. A very heartfelt staff. It was a pleasant attmosphere sitting outside on the patio with the heated lights. The choices we made were exceptional. I got the avocado toast, and a bowl of delicious broccoli soup. Wow. PLUS they carry Rachel's ginger beer, which is non-alcoholic and so refreshing. They're coffee is really perfection. My friend, visiting from China, Snow, ordered the tofu scramble and totally inhaled it. She said 'tofu never tasted so delicious!' We laughed, and talked and felt like we could stay forever. The front is a sort of confusing small seating area, but it seems to be just seating for the coffee bar, not for sitting down for brunch or a meal. We got the French toast and the pancakes, and both were very much enjoyed. The pancakes didn't seem overdone like in previous reviews or photos, and the French toast was on the dry side, but still tasty and not overly sweet or indulgent. Great place for Sunday brunch. The inside dining room felt a bit cramped and stuffy... but sitting outside under the awning as the rain fell was just perfect! Tower heaters kept us warm and comfy. We've been here several times recently & I came here often in high school like 8+ years ago!! The food is delicious, it's very well priced and the people who work here are super nice and friendly. I'm just knocking one star bc it's extremely disorganized, you walk in and there's a wait list on a pad of paper. We had called ahead and put our name down and I saw him skip over our name and call out the name of the people below us so then I said our party for 2 is actually here.. and he's like oh ok I'll seat you next. Then we get seated and all the staff is running around helping every table but us, finally after about 15 mins of sitting I grabbed someone who kindly said I'm not your server but I can take your order. And then after we finished eating same thing, had to flag someone down to get the check. Been here periodically in the past, but my visit today to HiLife Cafe in Madrona (7/3/17) was right after an icky medical procedure and haven't eaten or nothing beyond water for over 36 hours. Woozy, light headed, and on empty, this is where I ended up. Of course, during a holiday weekend, there was a wait and then once finally seated, it was packed. The loud din brought back that dull headache again. I selected an omelette ($8.95 base) with cheddar cheese (extra) and bacon (extra), slice of whole wheat toast with raspberry jam, and their home fries (breakfast potatoes) with ketchup. It was welcomed, but nothing stellar. It was over/under....teflon omelette and potatoes were under done. Pasta al dente yes, potatoes no - edible but needed a few more minutes to get that crisp exterior smashable interior. And served tepid water. Waaaah! But with the busy waitstaff, pointless to ask for ice or a refill. Other family member had a small oj, one underwhelming buttermilk pancake but with real butter and maple syrup (a plus), a locally sourced sausage patty, and scrambled eggs. It was deemed okay. Nice host and wait staff, but harried with the crowds. Cafe portion with the Macrina pastries was lowkey, but more of an accessory to the main restaurant. Good part is that it gave an opportunity to migrate elsewhere to get a mocha and be able to hear again. read more
