I used Hi-Tech for a few years to service my '06 911 and had trusted them wholeheartedly. However when I purchased an '83 930 and took it to them for an initial inspection, I was sadly exposed to an entirely different side. I had made numerous calls for advice to Brad throughout my purchase process from a private owner. The car had not seen service in many years. From my initial test drive of the car it was clear something was not right. It was very hard to drive the clutch, it was super tight. I had also noticed the idle rise about 500 rpm when the clutch was depressed. I am NO mechanic, just an enthusiast and these issues were readily apparent to me. I was also new to Air cooled 911's so did not no what was normal and what was not. Upon Brad's advice I took the car to them for a 30k service b/c that is what the odometer showed. Our understanding was that a PPI like inspection would be part of that service. Seemed like a perfect plan as I needed to know what was what with the car. I had an appointment for a Monday but had a work trip that week so I took that car in on the Friday before I left it there for the week I was gone. I met with Brad during drop off but as we talked through some stuff we were interrupted a few times by another customer. I neglected to mention the idle and clutch issues I had noticed. Again they seemed obvious to me and surely the EXPERTS of air cooled Porsche's would certainly notice. Well the following Monday (day of the appointment) and Tuesday went by and I did not receive a call from Brad. I assumed I would get an assessment call and then need to approve any work items. By mid-day Wednesday I called them. Brad sounded hurried and scattered and said everything was great and they were almost done. He said a few mechanics drove the car and thought it was great to which I took surprise but thought well ok great. . what do I know. Friday came and called to come get the car. I was told all was great. I asked well what about the idle issue. Brad said "what idle issue". Oy boy . . . When I arrived a few hours later the entire story changed. Now suddenly I was told the motor needed a rebuild that something was not right with the crank. But here please pay us the $2500 bill for servicing your engine! These experts had not noticed what was so obvious to me. How is that possible I thought?? The way I can best understand, they did not touch my car until late Thursday or early Friday. Did a quick oil change and valve adjustment without any sort of inspection or analysis. What I wanted as a customer more than anything was the inspection and analysis. What THEY wanted was to sell me a 30k inspection. Essentially a $2500 oil change and valve adjustment. I am upset with them because even though Brad took responsibility for never actually inspecting the car (in follow up emails) he would not take any fiscal responsibility. All of their work was useless and thrown out and the motor needed a total rebuild. They are a busy shop, they clearly do mostly very good work. We are all human and make mistakes. It would have been very gratifying if they had given me ANY sort of discount/fiscal acknowledgment and accountability for not doing the work that I as a customer wanted vs what they were focused on. They hurried my job and missed a major issue but wanted full payment anyway. Brad and I exchanged numerous emails where he acknowledged what I said above but refused ANY sort of fiscal responsibility. I see them as small minded, individuals unable to see past their own desires. It is unfortunate because I liked them very much. I tried very hard to reconcile but was refused. I took my new to me 2001 boxster for a post-purchase inspection after driving up from LA. Part of this inspection includes battery, "scan," "hold down," and "cables." See my attached photos for proof. The next drive after inspection my car was acting funny electronically and stopped completely while at a red light. Complete death. I had to push it aside and wait hours for a jump to pop the frunk. I was extremely disappointed to find that the only problem was that the battery negative cable terminal had slipped off. Hi Tec did NOT reattach the clamp properly or failed to tighten it during their inspection. This kind of super simple problem could have been prevented with some attention to detail--which is what I thought I was paying for. I am disappointed by the level of attention to detail they displayed with my P car and I would recommend that others avoid this shop. I hope Hi Tec can do better work in the future for others or make it up to me personally. Update, in response to the business owner: I think the battery portion which includes scan and check of the cables should have caught this. Part of a battery scan involves looking at/interacting with the terminals and the cable check should include checking the ends of the cables (terminals). read more

Hi Brad, I read what you wrote, but the car is is only kept inside for 20 years, and ALWAYS ran. I literally drove it there. Never any issues. The motor worked. You did a tune up - Now the motor doesn't work. -$2100 (1st) with you, and It didn't run when I tried to pick it up (now engine doesn't work), then - $2800 (2nd) service (read previous review where Owner Deven told me I need to replace drop link (but they just "replaced" it lol) I picked it up the 3rd time, drove it home, and now the car doesn't run at all. RECAP: $5,000, time there Nov-March, and the car that always ran, now the motor doesn't even run. The car always ran. meh. I took my car in for a basic service and to fix the rear light indicator warning that would come on randomly, despite the lights working fine. They replaced the lights anyway and gave the car back. The warning indicator lit up on the drive home, so I guess they didn't check to see if the repair worked. No big deal. I bring it back, they said they fixed it. On the drive home the lights came on again. I bring it back, they said they fixed it. Indicator lights turn on after driving for 5 minutes. They also didn't put the car back together properly, one of the panels was hanging off. At this point I gave up. I wish they would actually check to see if the repair worked before giving the car back. Huge waste of time. read more

I am German but that is not the reason I drive a Porsche. It was just the best fitting car available. It could have been an xfiniti again or some other nice SUV. But we got the Porsche from sonnen. Also a German owned company. But the service over there at sonnen sucks at least in our case. Promised call backs where forgotten, things that have been talked about ignored well that kind that brings you away from your car dealer ship. But I am so glad I found these guys. They doing Porsche as it is there's. Always fast and well original parts aren't cheap but they try to be reasonable in labor. So if you have a German car make sure you stop by when you have trouble with your garage. Its worth to stop by and let them have a look. Thanks guys read more

These guys are absolutely fantastic. After the Marin dealership tried to swindle me senselessly on a fuel pump repair, I towed it over to these guys who got the fix done in few days for well less than half of what the dealership quoted me. They ordered the part same day and installed it the next! Unfortunately my car had some remaining issues with the ECU, and the replacements were out of stock until a couple month. hi-tec was able to source a used ECU and reprogram it. Car is running great now. They were communicated with me each step, and in the end my charge was exactly what they quoted me. They even got my car detailed free of charge! They performed the PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) on the car and before I knew it the minimal paperwork was complete and Greg had it well represented on various auto sales websites. Best shop experience since moving to Marin 4 years ago. I would like to highlight some awesomeness... 1. Possibly the cleanest shop i seen. Which leads me to believe if you take care of your shop you are definitely paying attention to the details necessary to solve problems within the vehicle. 2. Without appointment, Brad said I could drop by so he can check out why my check engine light was on. When i got there the shop was closed but Brad still kept his word and stayed with me an hour after closing to explain what the problem was - free of charge. He was very personable, honest and sincere in his interest to help. This sealed the deal for me - i made an appointment right away. 3. For a year I heard a noise. I brought it into Sonnen Audi and they said the noise was normal. I brought it to other shops and they couldn't hear it. I brought it to Hi-Tec and they found the problem. Seriously. What validation and proof of their commitment to solve problems. 4. They did the work as they said they would. The estimate was accurate and the final bill was true to the estimate. My car runs so much smoother now. Awesome work! 5. Sonnen Audi no longer provides rental cars (at least not for an older Audi like my 2006). Nice job cheapskate! Guess what? Hi-Tec hooked me up with a car rental without even asking them! 6. When I needed a ride back to work after dropping my car off, they actually stopped at the coffee shop first before bringing me to work. Holla! Now that's service! Sonnenphobia finally got the best of me after Fred Jung disappeared. I searched long and with care, for someone to care for my pride and joy, for less than $2,000/visit! I own a 1997 Porsche Carrera C 4 S which needs me very much. It needed substantial attention after having been driven very little in the past four years. Hood and engine compartment struts, the heating and air conditioning system gone over, P-Zero tires, etc., you get the idea. By phone, I got excellent advice and good estimates. No surprises. The bill was substantially less than I had hoped. The car was finished in a timely manner and delivered to me. These Porschefiles know their business and are extremely gracious. First, let me say this: This is a old school Porsche shop at heart. They love cars, but especially Porsche's. I was told that to be taken seriously, to go visit, which I did. I had a bad valve problem on my 68' 912. I brought them a picture, they diagnosed it, and we made arrangements to fix it. They pulled the head, found the problem and ended up having to machine it altogether. While the engine was out I had both heads done, on their recommendation (previous owner did a turkey rebuild). Suffice to say, it was not cheap, but neither are old cars. Dana took great care and resprayed the engine tin without me even asking, which was a great improvement to the aesthetics of the motor, and something i secretly wanted him to do. I also had a oil pan stud that broke off and he patched it so it stopped the leak. I had him replace the stock oil cooler with an aftermarket. He also found an exhaust leak and welded it. Dana took care in tuning the carbs and replacing the worn rubber bushings on the solexes. This is all stuff he noticed and made right, with minimal time spend. He explained since he was already into the motor, it wasn't a big deal and i was glad i had such a thou rough eye look it over (since i only had the car for 1 year). In short, they were into the car for a valve and the oil cooler, but went the extra miles to ensure my engine was safe, clean, and tuned. In short, he took a tired dog and made it into a Porsche again. 10,000 miles later all I do is change the oil, valve adjust, set timing and fiddle with the solexes. All stuff I bought the car for. I have a spare engine that I will take to Dana to look over and develop a rebuild plan with a full flow system and perhaps a twin spark. I am glad to have Dana on my team. Worth every penny for knowledge, teaching, service, and excellence in their craft in caring for old Porsche's. read more

I've owned lots of vehicles, some through private party sales, some through dealerships, so I've got many points of comparison on this. Hi-Tec did the most thorough PPI imaginable (noting everything about the car right down to a small red lens missing from one of the dash lights), and worked with the seller to address everything that needed to be done to make the car perfect. I had a really brief but disturbing experience with this place. In a nutshell, the mechanic I dealt with seemed extremely manipulative and dishonest, apparently to jack the price of the job way up. Here's the story: I had my Audi towed to Hi Tec because of a transmission problem. I think (but I'm not sure) it was Devin who called me later and told me that the passenger side floorboard was flooded due to a clogged drain, and the water had fried my transmission computer (TCM). He sighed and said gravely, "This isn't good..." He said they would have to remove the carpet from the entire car and let it hang to dry for a many days; that this was, quote, "the ONLY way" to dry it. Furthermore it was a really labor intensive thing (because the seats and everything would need to be removed first). He suggested that I might even need a brand new carpet, as a previous Audi had. I kept asking him how much money all this would cost, but he wouldn't say. He would just reply with a "it's not looking good" or a "really labor intensive", etc. His tone of voice was as dramatic as a daytime soap opera star! He was totally freaking me out, but he wouldn't tell me anything concrete. Finally I had to state firmly that I needed some kind of cost estimate before I could make any kind of decision (obviously!) so we got off the phone so he could look up the cost and call me back. In the meantime I looked up this problem online, on the extensive Audi forums. I discovered that this is indeed a common problem with my Audi model, however, page after page advised to simply vacuum the water out of the carpet, peel back the carpet a little, remove the broken TCM and replace it. Done. This made me suspicious of Devin's vague doom and gloom. It seemed he was perhaps being dishonest, and trying to prepare me for a gigantic bill. Meanwhile I was still waiting to hear back from him about the price. I expected it to take him maybe 10 minutes to look up the part cost, but an hour later I was still waiting, so I called him back. He still didn't have a price! Instead he started telling me again how difficult the job was going to be. He said he would have to *remove the passenger seat* just to access the TCM. I felt confused because the Audi forums had advised simply peeling back the carpet a little bit to access it... And again I'm struck by how incredibly melodramatic Devin's tone of voice is, like he was a doctor delivering bad news to a terminally ill patient. He was scaring the heck out of me and yet he still wouldn't tell me anything about what the actual cost might be! I started to feel distrustful of his vague implications of a massive bill, so I told him that on the Audi forums everyone said that the carpets just needed to be vaccumed to remove the water. He responded by rambling vaguely about how this was a "possibility" and how he was "just about to mention it to me". Really? He was suggesting this morning that I might need to REPLACE THE CARPETING IN MY ENTIRE CAR and now he was just about to mention he could simply vacuum it instead? I told him the forums said it would take 20 minutes to remove the TCM, and he again rambled evasively (I don't remember what he said because it didn't make any sense). At this point I was totally regretting having the car towed there and I just wanted to get it out of there! I told him I was feeling concerned about the way he was handling this and I might want to take the car someplace else. When I said this he immediately started guilt tripping me about how he's been sick (pauses for a sudden fit of dramatic coughing!) and how he "registers my vote of no confidence in him" but that he still just wants to help me as best he can, etc, etc, and on, and on, and on; all with this melodramatic tone to communicate just how deeply I'd wounded his feelings and was personally rejecting him. YIKES! At this point I was completely done and had to interrupt him repeatedly to tell him I was going to have the car towed somewhere else. He said "Yes, please do that!" then he yelled and hung up... W.O.W... When I got off the phone I felt totally disturbed by this interaction. I immediately called to have my car towed to another mechanic [who by the way: vacuumed the carpet and put a blower on it to dry it, peeled back the carpet a little bit to remove the broken TCM, cleaned and dried it really well, tested it, found that it was working again, and reinstalled it! Presto, all done!] Epilogue: Hi Tec had removed and not replaced the front passenger floor mat before it was towed to the 2nd mechanic. My wife drove by Hi Tec today and asked for it. She spoke to the manager who apologized for the mat and our other difficulties. My wife was very impressed with him and said he was really awesome (he hadn't been in on the day I describe above). He even gave us the names of some other good Audi mechanics if we weren't going to take the car back to Hi Tec... read more

Deven and Dana (the Brothers Wailes) are expert technicians and you will NEVER be oversold or cheated in this place. Their business ethics are impeccable. Sure, you own a Porsche or an Audi, you will sometimes get a large bill, but you would have been given every penny's worth in parts and expertise. Stay away from those types of repair shops who claim knowledge of Porsche and Audi but are experimenting on your cars. These guys are a cut above---they really know what they are doing. They also run a small used car operation in case you are searching for a used Porsche---usually an older one, but not always. My friend recently bought a used Boxster from them and is extremely happy. It's a great car. I would not hesitate to recommend Hi-Tec to my family or closest friends. read more
