Nice selection of prime steaks and many other meats. I usually get prime NY strip steaks from Walmart or the supermarket when they have them (blasphemy, I know). I can honestly say Hickman's tasted a lot better. Comparing the prices, was it 40% better? I'm not positive. For your back yard BBQ the national chain's prime steaks are fine, but if you're looking for a gourmet meal, go to Hickman's. They were very friendly too. I'll definitely be back. read more

This is an old fashioned meat market. You walk in, and there aren't aisles, it's just a couple of fridges and freezers, a few displays on the customer side, and they a giant long meat display case the length of the store in front of you that the staff is behind. We bought our turkey from here - you had to order by November, and the size of the turkey was just going to be in a range. At $6 a pound it was substantially more than the frozen ones in the supermarket. However, I think it was worth it. For one thing, it's not pre-marinated, so you could do this yourself (I went with apple cider, orange rind, pepper, salt and some poultry seasoning) which is fun and adds some subtle flavors. It's also not frozen, so no worrying about setting up a cooler, monitoring safe temperatures and the works. The other purchase was sausage - Italian, one hot and one mild. I was surprised when it came out as one large sausage (not links). And cooking took a while, but it was GREAT. After the mild was finished, my inlaws who aren't big into spicy food (and the spicy was rather spicy) still kept taking from the spicy sausage rather than stopping. I really wish I had something like this closer to me! read more

We had a group of 9 for braised lamb shanks. I called these guys on Tuesday to inquire if they carry lamb shanks. I was told the delivery will be Thursday morning at 10am. So, Thursday morning around noon, we went in to get some. The space is small, yes. But I'm sure that's just the front. They must have a fairly large operation in the back to be able to keep all these products fresh. Anyway, we picked up 9 shanks, cut in halves. We also got about 2lbs of hot Italian sausage and 5 chicken breasts. Everything was amazing, but those lamb shanks were HEAVENLY!!! Every single person in the group raved about how fresh they tasted, even after being braised for 5.5 hours. It was truly the freshest anyone had tasted before. The chicken was also very tender, fresh, and flavorful. Sure, it's a bit pricey. But it's definitely worth it! read more

Absolutely love shopping here. The quality and variety of the offerings is outstanding, and worth it right there. What takes it over the top is the advice, knowledge and customer service by its staff. I was returning home the next day, about a 3 hour drive, and they happily offered to vacuum-wrap my selections, in single portions suitable for freezing. The pork chops were cut to my specifications. Just so nice not to be stuck with whatever the supermarket offers up! I'd forgotten what that feels like. In terms of the pandemic and the small space in their store, only 4 customers are allowed inside at a time; in keeping with the general aura of the store, outgoing patrons let incoming patrons know of the number of customers inside. Always wanted to stop here . Now that I'm a full time resident I finally did and so far the meats have not disappointed. I got 2 bone in rib-eye steaks , 2 thick cut pork chops and 2 lbs of kielbasa. The steaks were outstanding. So tender and juicy. Can't wait to try the others. The store is old fashioned butcher shop. It reminded me of the butchers my grandmother took me too. Store has sausage, brats , kielbasa in their refrigerator. Chicken, pork and steaks in the meat case. Yes, it cost more than Giant or Acme but you get so much better meat. I grew up only buying meat from a butcher and I still stick to that when home. I don't question the high prices because I know for the quality it's worth it without question. That being said, I swung by here to pick up a ribeye for lunch and I happily paid $32 for a touch under a pound steak. All in all it was sadly a huge disappointment. I found the meat to be tough and completely flavorless. I am on a keto diet so meat is pretty much my thing and this was just awful. I honestly went out the same evening to Harris Teeter and spent half the price for a much nicer ribeye that blew the one purchased here out of the water. read more

Ah, Hickman's. Being fairly new to the area, we were in search of a good, no great, local butcher. Stopping in here is one of my favorite pastimes. The fellas behind the counter are all super helpful and very knowledgeable. When you ask for a London broil, they bring out a 50 lb. piece of beef and trim it up in front of you, asking you exactly what you want and where you want it cut from. I had a local butcher in NJ that over the years I'd made friends with. Used to get a little known cut, a "butchers cut", if you will. I asked the guys at a Hickman's for it, and they immediately brought out another large piece of beef, and proceeded to trim and slice, to unearth the cut from deep inside the larger piece, agreeing that what I was asking for was a prized piece. The 2nd or 3rd generation (I presume) owner and his staff are friendly and great to buy from. We love Hickman's! read more

I am impressed! I am a big carnivore, and was first turned onto this place as they are the bratwursts they use at the Dogfish Head brewery kitchen. I stopped by on my way out of the area (to pick up said brats) and spent an extra 100 bucks from fresh cut steaks, breakfast sausage, italian, and a few other items they had (they had the one BBQ sauce that they didn't make themselves, but carry....that was something else too). Staff was very friendly, didn't rush, gave good advice on things I might like and not like, and were pretty patient too. It is NOT cheap...but truly excellent. I WILL be stopping again. read more

Wow! I do not spend enough time at the Butcher Shop. Hickman's is the real deal. Like Sam the butcher bringing Alice the meat, I got the bomb diggity hook up. Back story - I was having a crab feast & I had a bunch of out of towners, I was not sure each one of them would feast properly on Blue Crabs, I decided to throw together some Burgers as a filler food. Playboy magazine had run an article that month on "The Perfect Burger", they took all the best qualities of ten Burgers from around the world. They recommended Umami's burger blend: 50% Sirloin 25% Chuck 25% Brisket Hickman's ground it up while I waited, it was delicious, I also asked for & received 2lbs of thick cut bacon, mmmmm Bacon! This place is great. My boyfriend and I were staying in Rehoboth during a rainy and cold May weekend and were hoping to improve our somewhat failed beach vacation by making ourselves a steak dinner on the grill. Hickman's is a little hard to find - the address provided by Yelp is different than what shows up on Google, and I can't remember which is correct. I would call them before you go to ensure you're headed toward the right place. Finding it was our biggest hurdle - but I won't fault Hickman's for that! Once we got there, we were greeted by two friendly guys behind the counter who you could instantly tell were incredibly knowledgeable about the meat they were selling. Being relatively new to grilling meat, we asked them what we should get based on the grill/seasonings we had and the kind of meal we were looking to make. They provided great recommendations (as we discovered later when we ate our dinner). Instead of trying to sell us some expensive meat rub or sauce (which they easily could have succeeded in doing), they told us to simply grill the meat, then salt it afterwards. That's it. And it ended up being absolutely delicious. It's expensive, yes - but you get what you pay for. High price for high quality meat and exceptional service. Skip the supermarket meat counter when you're at the beach and treat yourself - head to Hickman's. read more

Very small unassuming store in a large strip mall, which gets most of its customers from the Outlet Liquors shop. Inside though items are nicely organized, neatly arranged, and very clean. Excellent array of beef cuts and pork. Chicken as well, and quite a few sausages, and many sauces that are bottled. Beef is grass fed corn finished, and grabbed a porterhouse that was fantastic. As a Chicagoan, I was imagining more of an old-school Chicago-style butcher shop based upon the family history and positive reviews (from Tony Kornheiser of all people) with grizzled old butchers behind large display counters of meats and sausages. So, I was a bit surprised when arriving to find this place is actually quite small and tucked into a strip mall. However, the prime rib roast that we ordered was excellent and did not disappoint. The ground beef and round roast that we purchased were also very good. The only item that failed to live up to expectations was the ground turkey. They only had it frozen when we went and the texture was just not up to snuff when it was thawed and made into turkey burgers. But, all in all, the fresh options are all recommended. read more

If you are a fan of meat, you have come to the right place. Hickman's is the only place I have ever purchased beef tenderloin filets that are as good as those served at Ruth's Chris, Morton's, Fleming's and other top-notch steakhouses. Their homemade brats and breakfast links are the best I've ever tasted, including from the German delicatessen down the street from my "other house" that specializes in making their own sausages. I haven't eaten anything from Hickman's that didn't deserve a full 5 stars. It doesn't bother me to order ahead, since a specialty store like this in this area can't really be expected to carry everything they sell cut and ready in their cases every day. A previous writer compared it to meat at a local supermarket, which I won't even name because its meats don't belong in the same sentence with a reference to those from Hickman's. The folks there are the friendliest and most helpful around. Yes, it's expensive, and they don't pretend it isn't. This is certainly one case where you get what you pay for. We no longer buy meat anywhere else at the beach and have started carting it back to Baltimore with us when we leave--it's that good. read more

I have been shopping at Hickman's since I moved to Millsboro over two years ago. The meats are superior, including their homemade sausage and their roasted lunchmeats, which include roast beef, turkey and ham. We love their natural hot dogs and sage sausage! I would rather pay a little more for meat which doesn't contain hormones and anti biotics, and know that I have made the healthy choice.
