Made a reservation for a big party. And all I can say is This place is a total dissapointment. We did not believe we would have to wait two hours for food. It's unreal. The service is horrible. subpar. Waitress begins on a Monday night. We have no chicken wings. No steak. The choices continue to disappoint. They even brought the check before we finished eating. I have been here twice, each time for lunch while visiting a friend on Fire Island for the day. Great drinks and lovely ambiance. The oysters were a disappointment. So tiny and ridiculously expensive for the puny size of each oyster. The salad was boring. We chose the Hideaway because of its location along the beautiful bayside setting. The restaurant has an upscale beachy dining room appearance. Their menu has everything one would expect from a French bistro to an American cuisine. We were a large family group that originally were intending to dine outdoors by the bayside but chose inside the dining room since it was a windy and very warm late afternoon day. Although we chose to dine indoors, we still had bayside water views and pleasing fresh air coming into the open dining room. From what I read, their signature dishes include seafood pasta, the tequila lime ribs, lobster roll, and their burger. My choice was the Jerk Rubbed Tuna which was in an herb salad and smoked scotch bonnet sauce. The dish was particularly good. The service was hectic at first, but I was guessing it could have been from the limited staff working at the time. But we were in no rush, and we very much were enjoying the comfortable relaxing bayside views along with our drinks The Hideaway has undoubtedly become one of my favorite Fire Island restaurants and I am very much looking forward to next season when we dine here again, but outdoors next time. read more

The service was good, the view was beautiful, it took a long time for the meal. I ordered a burger Medium to medium rare. It showed up well-done. Not a drop of pink when cut open. I sent it back. The next burger was the same, not even pink. 3rd times a charm? Not really. It had a little pink. While the server, who was lovely kept apologizing, we assured him it was not his fault, and really a manager should be stopping by at this point. Then out came Zack. Apparently both manager and Chef, hands on hips, with attitude saying "What can I do for you?" We started to tell him about the burgers, he cut us off, insisting the second burger was a perfect medium, arguing about it when we said it was well-done, became nasty, said I don't. care I'll take it off the bill, and turned and walked away with his obnoxious attitude. Someone needs to explain to Zack what hospitality means. Taking an item off the bill, but doing so with an attitude and being obnoxious to your customers, is not how you handle a situation where the customer did not need to leave feeling compelled to write a poor review. So I just finished my meal and I literally could not wait to Yelp! about it. Everything was absolutely perfect. Please do yourself a favor and repeat our entire order. You will not be disappointed. Spicy margs. Stuffed shrimp baked clams (app). Seared Tilefish and Pork Milanese (entree's). The chef this year is Chef Matt, his food delivers, but the bartender can't keep up with the flow - the servers brought our cocktails at the same time as our entrees, also found attention from serving people less than it might be, the GM had to come out and check up on us. It's probably no shock to most people that you're paying top dollar to be eating/drinking anywhere on Fire Island. Hideaway is OK if you keep this in mind and ignore the pretty mediocre food. But it's not about the food. It's all about the view! This is to say, if you can't sit outside overlooking the water, go elsewhere because there's nothing special about Hideaway's interior (nor its food). My group arrived via boat on a Monday night and the place wasn't busy, but every seat outside was taken, so I can only imagine the weekend mayhem! In fact, you probably couldn't pay me to come out here on a weekend. We gave in our name and came back in a half hour to the perfect bayside table. A perusal of the menu meant that I had to ask our waitress to speak to the kitchen because I was immediately met with a blank stare when I asked about vegan options (the guy who docked our boat told us that they would be able to accommodate us. Props to him for being helpful!) I had a pretty nice time here considering the fact that I had to order "the tuna, without the tuna" which amounted to a small pile of vermicelli noodles pan fried with a few mushrooms. They took off 10 dollars for the lack of tuna, but this plate of food under no circumstances warranted the 28 dollar price tag. I'm OK with paying for an experience. If I wasn't, I'd grant this place one or two stars and tell you to avoid it. The experience is totally worth it, though not on a weekend unless you want to be a part of some tired beach crowd "scene." On a quiet weekend night, however, it was pretty spectacular to sit outside on the water underneath a dark summer sky ignoring the fact that I had a plate of tuna without the tuna in front of me. Pro tip: If you dock your boat here, they'll waive the fee and the kid who works this dock is pretty cool, so make sure you tip him! read more

Go straight for the lobster roll! It's their speciality and the only thing on the menu that will fill you up. While the fish tacos and cold ramen are decent, the portion size fails to even quench hunger for an hour. So use them as sides. The ever so famous Rocket Fuel is perfectly blended, but the mojito, ice tea and ice coffee fail on all accounts. Your better off having a straight drink or water. Seating on the outside is ideal but the inside gives you a break from the heat with an equally amazing view. Came here during the day (all ages) and night (40s and up). read more

I really thought at first glance this could be a great regular place to visit, then... Service was rude, not manhattan rude, but "I'm trying to go home, rude" it was 6pm ish... Drinks were disappointing; Rum punch was just mixer and rum, with some coconut rum as well... Blahhhh.. White Sangria, not that I tasted it, looked fantastic, but all those drinking it said it was poor. The waitress must have known, she didn't come back to offer more drinks or even water. Food: NE Clam Chowder, very salty, no clams, loads of fish bones. Waitress looked at me in horror when I asked for crackers. "we don't do crackers, we have bread"? Was she trying to be stuck up?.. She brought the Stale Bread once the soup was finished. Pork Chops were so sweet... You know what, My review just stops here. I had the tuna on a bed of rice noodles, tiny mushrooms and a tasty sauce under the noodles. AND, bottles of wine were half price! My friends had the mussels and short rib appetizers as their entre and they thought both were great. He was nice about it and generally did a good job, but by then I was just weirded out. This place is far too expensive for customers to be treated this way. Oh, a lot of the food was mediocre. One of the worst lobster rolls I've ever had....and the french fries were inedible. They were obviously frozen, and not crisp, although they had plenty of salt on them. One member of our party asked for salad instead of the fries, and was given a modest salad that was not bigger or better than the salad garnish that came with everyone else's lunch. So, Hideaway saved on the fries and gave no actual substitute. Absolutely never again. read more

We came here for a 40th birthday celebration dinner. The people could not be bothered with us. The waiter was apparently having a "bad day". We sat at our table for 30 Minutes and no one came over to us. The manager could not be bothered and could care less about our experience. When we expressed our concerns and voiced we were going to leave, she said "okay, thank you". Would not recommend nor will we be back. Initially host asked if we had reservation upon walking in and we said no do we need one as no one was there except one other couple. He then brought us to back deck table. Horrible service!!!! Guy brought out drink order and we took one sip and said we prefer to have another as does not taste good. Server said sorry this has happened before but nothing I can do. If people have not liked drinks before then something is going on with bartender. You either bring new drink or do not charge but neither were done. On to dinner had tuna tartare tacos. Hardly any tuna but mostly mayo sauce. Avocado looks like it came out of squeeze bag. Food not good thus explaining only one other couple eating dinner in entire place on a Saturday night. Pricey food and drinks for poor quality. How this has 3 1/2 stars is baffling to me. I used to be an OB regular and this was--and as of a few days ago, still is--the most consistent and creative restaurant on OB. Not to mention delicious. Chris Hunter ably helms the kitchen (as well as gives lemon verbena to customers dining outside being bothered by pesky insects) and tuns out delicious seafood, as well as non-seafood dishes. It's understated, has great outdoor seating, and possibly the best mac-n-cheese with crumbly blue cheese ever. Yes, you do want a zippy cooler or the 5-rum punch which packs its own punch and is well worth it. In fact, there isn't a bad drink on the cocktail menu. Yes, it's expensive, but so is everything out there. And unlike some of the others, it's totally worth it. I don't have a bad thing to say about it, except that it's really far from us, sadly. read more

Just returned from a PHENOMENAL dinner at Hideaway! We were warmly greeted and promptly seated by the host. Our server was welcoming and attentive. Our biggest problem was deciding what to order! My husband and I were torn between 3 appetizers, 2 salads, and 5 entrees. It took us a while to strategize our order to maximize tasting as much as we could! We chose the Clams Casino apprizer, which was straight up succulent. TBH, clams aren't my favorite, but I got these because my husband wanted them. Yowza, they were amazing!!! I have never wanted to scrape the clamshell clean before. I'm not a big bacon fan either, but the combo was pretty phenomenal. Mmmmm! We then shared pan seared scallops on a bed of heavenly lobster risotto, as well as a special - pan seared halibut. Both were prepared to perfection and were absolutely delicious. As a side, we ordered grilled asparagus, which was plump, tasty, and grilled to perfection. This is my favorite restaurant in Ocean Beach! Fresh and delicious food, good choices for vegetarians, friendly and helpful service, and a nice pacing to the service (ideal amount of time between appetizers and entrees).
