Location, location, location! This is the perfect spot to enjoy dinner while watching the sunset over the marina. We had a little reservation debacle when we arrived. They accidentally canceled our reservation because there were two bookings under the same name, so we were initially seated indoors by the entrance. After we spoke with the manager, she quickly made it right and moved us to an outdoor table by the marina. It was absolutely worth it. Breathing view The food was spectacular, especially if you love seafood. The lobster tail was incredibly tender, the panko-fried oysters were perfectly crispy, and the wild halibut was outstanding. The service was warm and friendly from start to finish. We ordered a dozen oysters as a starter. For our entree I had the ahi tuna poke bowl and he had the grilled tuna. They do add a card processing fee. Three of us celebrated our friend's birthday on Ocean Beach and a wonderful police officer recommended Matthew's for lunch. He even walked us there. We love Matthew's! The view is amazing and the food is awesome. We have been going to Fire Island with our friends for the past 5 years, and even though there are 8 of us, the restaurants and staff are always welcoming and friendly. This is one of our favorites as far as the atmosphere and the food. We love sitting right by the water and it's absolutely beautiful. Amazing, friendly staff! Super family friendly and affordable lobster (like reasonably priced comparable to MacGuire's $60 for 1.5 which is nuts). They have a kids menu as well. The kids even has a choice of popcorn shrimp which I haven't seen ever in a kids' menu. The price include a drink and a "surprise" The host saw that I had my hands full and was very patient with us - we did come at 3 pm so that helps a great deal. Given our vacation schedule and late starts in the mornings, this definitely helps to dine when it isn't so busy. The food is fresh and not stale if you get my drift. The chicken tenders look decent and the fries were yummy. The cornbread was made here! They also have everything from bar for parents! Had an incredible experience here last Saturday night. The hostess graciously seated our party of 11, including two high chairs. Our server was amazing and did not forget or mess up a single item over the course of our two-hour dinner. A great surprise. We had a few meals while in town, this was the top. Friendly service (J P), great view and such a relief to finally get some good steamers. Actually ordered steamers at two other restaurants and these were far and away the best. Big, clean and flavorful. I assumed they all got them at the same place but I guess not. Can't beat the location - right on the dock with a shady, breezy patio. They have some sort of event every night. We went Wednesday for wine specials, tapas and some great live music by Dennis & Ivan. They were really talented, and had a fantastic set list.my friend ordered the seafood Cobb which was pricey ($40), but delicious, my husband and I ordered 3 items off the tapas menu which were all fried, and not great. Looking to seat 6 people for an 8:30 dinner, we were worried the lines may be 30 minutes plus. Luckily at Matthews they were able to seat us right away and had plenty of options for those of us who were starving and those of us who just needed a light something to hold us over. Between the 6 of us, we probably ordered most things on the menu. The seafood chowder was a great compromise when lobster bisque wasn't being served. We also ordered the fried and grilled appetizer full of mussels, calamari and crab. The lobster rolls were light and tasty and the waiter allowed us to sub in veggies over chips as our side. We also had the Mahi Mahi, mussels and whole lobster. Everyone was very happy with their meal and no one walked out hungry. Matthews would have been even better had we come before sunset since this spot was right on the water. I have yet to find a place on the water where you pull up by boat that deserves more than 3 stars. We arrived at about 1pm and there were plenty of boat slips open. The deck hand helped us dock. My only complaint is that it was low tide so the deck hand had to pull the ropes closer to the dock and then you had to jump up on the NARROW finger to get off. I wish there would have been a ramp or stairs of some sort. You pay $40 upfront for the first two hours to dock and then it is $10 every hour after. However, you are given a $30 voucher to use at the restaurant. We were seated right away on the outside deck and the waitress came over with menus. She took our drink and food orders. I ordered a lobster roll which I was not impressed with. It was tasteless and the aioli that was on top of the meat was not good and did not help with the flavor. My boyfriend got the cheeseburger which he said was "below average" When it was time to leave, the boat slips were filled with boats coming in and leaving. There was only one deckhand working so we had to wait a bit for him to undo the ropes in order to get on the boat. I dont blame him, but thinking maybe the restaurant should have two guys working especially on the weekend. read more

Yes we did have to wait 1/2 hour by the bar before we sat down to eat but who cares your on Fire Island with no worries. Absolutely gorgeous dinner spot - worth it for the sunset views alone. I had the mussels, which were plentiful and very tasty, and there was plenty of fresh bread for sopping up all that delicious broth. We got a variety of appetizers for the table and those were all great. Staff was super friendly (as everybody seems to be on Fire Island). The only bummer was the terrible outdoor karaoke going on next door - it was so loud (and awful) that it was quite a distraction. Otherwise, a great dinner spot! read more

Came back to Matthew's for my second visit - this time with my girlfriend. After a few hours of lying on the beach we decided to look along the bay side for a good salad. We opted for Matthew's and were glad we did. I had the mixed green salad with grilled chicken and my girlfriend had the island salad. Both of our meals were big enough to satisfy and were quite tasty. The atmosphere at this restaurant is very cool and relaxed - the view of the bay is beautiful. My biggest complaint is that they charged us $3.50 for an iced tea, which would be ok if the refills were free - they were not! So, $14 worth of drinks with no alcohol and no warning that they charge for refills. This isn't that big of a deal, but it might be nice to know beforehand. read more

I was seated with my wife looking for a good time. The food took an hour for just mussels and a lobster roll. Then when the food finally did come out it was cold! The mussels were ice cold. My wife got the lobster roll which was 39$ after tax and the biggest rip off I've ever experienced. I strongly recommend never coming here, the lobster roll she said was horrible. You are better off going to any other place in ocean beach. And don't get me started on the management. The owner came up to me after I had called over to fix the issue with our food and she was such a bitch. She would not help us at all and we ended up leaving because of how she treated us. She flew off the handle and accused me of lying. When I said I could send pictures of my friend's wife in the ER she hung up on me. If it wasn't a ferry ride away I would have returned to give that bitch a piece of my mind and a bill for the er visit. $18.95 for a shrimp cocktail, Tomain poisoning and verbal abuse? With minimal options for dinner on Fire Island, a long day at the beach, I was thirsty and starving and Matthews Seafood House has a great menu. The place is dated, but it's a seafood house on a marina so I guess that is expected. I got a table outside on the boardwalk facing the boats, the sunset and view was beautiful. Our server was very kind but seemed overwhelmed. It was happy hour but we could not participate because we were at a table and not at the bar. I ordered this little seafood platter, it was ok. I've had better seafood. I also ordered a mango margarita, it was decent, I would've stuck with a beer. The prices here don't match up with the food and service.
