If I could give 10 stars I would for Highland Morning. The food, the service and the vibe were EXCELLENT in every way. Highland Morning was recommended by a former UL student neighbor and man it was the best recommendation. We went around 11AM on a Monday so it was not busy at all. Andrew our server was exceptionally nice and filled us in on his recommendations based on what we liked. We liked EVERYTHING!!! The menu is fantastic, so whatever your breakfast/brunch tastebuds are yearning for they have it. I tried the key west key lime pancakes. Unbelievable and oh so different. This was a brunch spot recommended while I was in town for a tournament. It's a cute little spot nestled by the university. I was torn between the benedict and the shrimps & grits. I told the server to surprise me and I ended up with the benedict paired with a mimosa. It was great! Food seemed heavy but didn't leave you feeling like you needed a full day nap. Service was great. The portions are enormous, so any plans for a "light breakfast" will soon have you saying you won't need food again until tomorrow. They're known for their pancakes (rightfully so), but the real hit is the stuffed French toast. The fresh fruit cuts through the cream cheese and thick sourdough to help mitigate the food coma that follows. Their savory dishes can leave you wanting for some flavor, but that's why the good Lord invented hot sauce. Also, yes, you can technically go to the St. Matthews location, but somehow it just tastes better in the Highlands. Maybe it's the vibes, maybe it's the mild chaos in a small space, or maybe it's the satisfaction of earning your meal as you quest for parking and wait for a table. What a great little place. Really felt like home cooked diner food in a little house. Staff was friendly and helpful When we were there, they were short staffed servers and cooks, very busy, but they were trying hard. Even mixed up our order and had a long wait to fix it - but honestly we were chilled out and enjoying coffee and breakfast. Good street parking outside and a cute around to hang out in (if you ever half to wait for a table). We sat in the side room but our server was polite and helped us pick out good things. Pretty standard breakfast place here. It had the usual. I had a combo omelette of sorts. It tasted like standard American breakfast. Coffee was decent & service was dependable. Nothing stands out. There was one weird staff member who made a Federal case about the plate being too hot as she hurredly dropped of my omelette order to me. I picked up the plate and it was luke warm. I reaaaally wanted to love this place. I'm an OG Jersey girl, so diners are my lifeblood. This seemed like a perfect spot for a Saturday morning breakfast, and I was encouraged by the swath of people waiting outside to get in. Magically, we got immediately seated, which was a pleasant surprise. The interior doesn't have the traditional retro diner vibe I'm used to, so I'm not sure if they'd even consider themselves a diner, but the divey-ness of the place was charming. There are portraits of celebrities lining the walls, and that seems like a rite of passage for any old-school dining establishment. Our server, Samantha, was an absolute doll, and she made us feel comfortable and welcomed. I ordered the Bardstown Blend coffee, and the first cup was lukewarm, so she graciously offered to brew a new pot -- the second cup was great; strong and hot, the best combo for a solid diner cup o' Joe. I was feeling optimistic about the food cause I always judge a place by its coffee. Sadly, I had to send back the first dish I ordered because it tasted like the corncakes had spoiled -- I actually spit out the bite I took, which is not a typical move I make. On a positive note, the restaurant has an A rating, so it could've just been personal flavor preference, as the Baja Benedict is the restaurant's best seller. Samantha very kindly swapped it out with a Kentucky's pick three omelette. It was much better but still just ok. My boyfriend enjoyed his stuffed French toast, so that was a win. After a medical procedure this morning, I decided to try a new-to-me restaurant before heading home to sleep -- as prescribed. I asked the friendly waitress Ressa if the shrimp and grits were good and she pronounced them 'one of her go-tos'. Shrimp and grits are a favorite of mine. Toast's are good, Sullivan's in Anderson SC was the best I'd had, until I found the dish at Jack Fry's. I should have gone to Jack's. These were only okay, and they were decidedly different. They're served in a bowl atop two eggs. When Ressa asked how I wanted my eggs I assumed they were on the side. I did not love this arrangement. I've never had them atop eggs before. Grits had minimal flavor. I would go back, but I'd order something different. Friendly atmosphere, nothing 'bad' about the food / I've just had much better. read more

This was one of the best parts of my trip to Louisville. Not just because of the food (although that was great) but because of the staff. I wish I could remember the name of the woman who waited on us. She was hilarious, when I told her I wanted unsweetened instead of sweet tea, she replied "get out." She pushed the grits on us hard, the special grits that day were brown sugar, and being the Paleo idiot I am I didn't order them so she brought me a little sample at the end. It was heavenly. I have been to the other Highland Morning location in the past so I did not expect to have a different experience food wise at this location. Our server was good, took care of our requests, so no complaints there. My only issues with this place is that a side French toast is $4.99 and then it is once slice. When the slice is brought out, look how sad, lonely, and disappointing it is. Despite my poor little french toast story, I ordered the Biscuit and Gravy Omelet. The is a combination of most of my breakfast staple food. Executed well, this was a filling omelet that I will be having again. I feel like there are other breakfast places where you get a bang for your buck and better flavors, so Highland Morning will remain closer to the bottom of the list. read more

We should have expected the long wait. Sunday morning. Bourbon and Beyond Music festival. A packed restaurant. But the 40 minute wait was worth every second. Our group of 10 was easily served by Brandie. Orders came out together, hot and without any mistakes. That's quite a tribute to both the wait staff and the kitchen. Every dish was done right. During my visit here me and my sister and my friend were met with disrespect and menacing behavior from the servers working. We were accused of drinking alcohol as we were being watched and they made us feel very uncomfortable during our experience. As we were leaving, our server, Eilish M., stopped us at the door and accused us of drinking and smoking as she was speaking to us like we were children. just had the worst experience in a while here at a restaurant. I went out for breakfast this morning with my parents and my mother has celiac disease (no gluten at all or she'll have to get stuck with an EpiPen). First of all, we had called before we arrived and a woman picked up the phone and she was very friendly, telling us that there are definitely options for my mother to eat gluten free, which gave us hope so we were excited to eat at this cute little joint. when we walked in the door, a male seated us, was not inviting whatsoever. We sat down and he didn't even introduce himself so couldn't give you his name. But, we informed him about my mother's food allergy. He then proceeded to give us an attitude and said "well no kitchen is not cross contaminated so I cannot promise you anything." Which is entirely not true because we have been able to eat at several restaurants without my mother getting sick. He went on a whole tangent of how there's nothing really for her to eat and made her feel like an inconvenience, which is ridiculous, it's not like she chose to have a severe gluten allergy. His whole attitude about it was not only entirely rude and uninviting but it also told us he had no intention on being careful with my mother's food. My dad and I were pissed, we all left before even ordering and my mother cried in the car while we looked for somewhere else to eat breakfast. Always fun to try new restaurants when visiting home! Bardstown rd has a plethora of restaurants and different businesses. There is free street parking if you time it right. Bardstown rd is always busy. The restaurant was easy to find. We parked across the street for free. Wake got us there with no issue. We were seated as soon as we entered. No call ahead was required on a Saturday. It was close to closing time. My son got the waffles and side of bacon. He was happy with hid food. Bacon was cooked perfectly. My sister got the shrimp and grits. She's a chef...so she said not bad. I had the veggie omelette with fruit. The fruit was good and sweet for the most part. I enjoyed the omelette however I would have preferred the veggies been chopped up smaller. It was like a Roma tomato was quartered and added to my omelette. I didn't like that. I ordered the Omelet for breakfast and chose rye bread and potatoes as my sides! It was yummy and exactly what I wanted! It came with sour cream and pico de gallo on top... which only made it better! But I decided when in Louisville I had to try some type of Hot Brown.... and great choice you me bc it was delicious!! I stopped in here with just me, 3 of my daughters and three of there friends. So I was outnumbered 6 to 1 by girls. The lobby is very tiny here and when we walked in around 1130am we was lucky enough that they had a large table available. We received very good and fast service here. I personally ordered the monte cristo sandwich. It was a bacon and egg sandwich with the bread being French toast. Very tasty and flavorful. My daughter and two of her friends got Katie's leaning tower of waffles. Which was a Nutella and whipped cream waffle with strawberries. All 3 of them loved it and was a big fan. My oldest got the ultimate burrito without onions and her friend for strawberry pancakes. Once again both said there meal tasted great. The one year old got a side of scrambled eggs. She can't tell me it was good but she ate them. So take that for what it's worth. So the food and service was very good. Pricing wasn't bad. For all of us it was just over $60 before tip.
