This is one of Louisvilles old school diner that my Mom (now 89) used to go to on dates. The absolutely wonderful newest development is that they now have a few guys from Guatemala working the grill. I love this place! On the beaten path but so often forgotten because it has been here soooo long! The thing is, IT HAS CHANGED! Quite a bit may I add. Twig and leaf has been around since 1962 servings traditional diner food from burgers and fries to the best French toast. Recently they added an extra flair serving the most delectable Guatemalan food. They make their food in house from tortillas to various salsas. They serve large generous portions and the gentleman who leads, is ALWAYS genuine, welcoming and a wonderful host. It's one of the few places where we can go anytime and know the food and service will exceed expectations and leaving you will be happy and full. Always a great combo. Some favorites are definitely the Gorditas and Guatemalan tacos. For brekki- and shoot even lunch or dinner- French toast! Everyday, all day! The country fried steak is a winner! Highly recommend! I've lived near this place for 20+ years and I avoided it until recently. They were always a greasy spoon breakfast place, with emphasis on grease. It still looks much the same if you walk by. But it is now under new management and SO MUCH improved! Their chef is Guatemalan and he is both a sweet person and an outstanding cook! I think they only bring out the Guatemalan menu after 4 pm (but you can try asking for one of his specialties). But I've been there 5 times in past 6-8 mos. & it got better every time. The gorditas and pupasas are especially recommended! For those who want breakfast, they still have plenty of egg and pancake choices too. These days this place rocks! Twig and Leaf is not what it used to be. I hadn't been since it reopened under new ownership, but I've been hearing the buzz about authentic Guatemalan cuisine. Apparently, it's served everyday except Tuesday. You'll have to get your taco Tuesday fix elsewhere and save this place for every other day of the week. I had the Guatemalan taco platter. I've heard it's the most authentic around. I haven't been to Guatemala to be able to confirm those accolades, but I can confirm that these tacos are phenomenal. My husband and children ordered chicken and pork tacos and our experience was both affordable and a crowd pleaser. There were multiple sauces available on the table, but my favorite was the one on my plate. It was spicy, but not so spicy that it overpowered the flavor of the tacos themselves. It was super fresh tasting with cilantro and chunks of avocado. The meat portions were generous. It's hard to imagine the meals I had decades ago were from the same location now serving these tacos. If you're a Louisville native and haven't been back, it's time to give this place another try. The atmosphere has changed. The food has changed. The service has changed. All for the better. The Tostados and Taquitos made for a lot of food, but were delicious in their own. Queso isn't on the menu yet but they serve it so be sure to ask - it has a kick that adds another layer to an already good app. This is a big step uo from the old menu. I have been past this place many times as often as I have been on Bardstown Road and never came here until recently with a friend. They have changed their hours from 7am-3pm as of this review being posted, we basically came here for an early lunch since they close early. Street parking available, we went in at around 1-1:30 in the afternoon. Place was somewhat busy and there were a few empty tables, most of them hadn't been wiped off yet but, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt beings there was a counter/server and only one cook that we could see working. Coming in there is an overwhelming old building smell that I will say is unappealing but, this place is old so it is expected. We did find one table that looked somewhat clean and sat there. It did take a few minutes to be waited on. We both ordered the Single Twig which is a Single patty burger. I got seasoned fries and my friend got the crinkle. Now to the food. I will say the burger was well cooked which that's how we like it. Not the best burger out there but it was decent. Seasoned fries were delicious. We were both satisfied with the food and left full. My understanding they used to be open later but, I assume that there isn't enough help like it is most everywhere. I hope to see them open later at some point in time and hopefully I can come in earlier and try their breakfast that is served from open to close. read more

I've always heard you don't come here for the quality of the food, but you come here for a cheap breakfast that could barely shrink your wallet. This time, as the last, the bacon was over-crisp and crumbly, my scrambled egg was more like an omelette shell and bland, and the OJ tasted much like Sunny D. Oh boy, where do I begin? First, I'll start with the positives because there were a couple! The breakfast food was hot and pretty yummy. We came in at 9am on a weekday so it was very quiet. Now for the rough stuff: - It took exactly 40 minutes from us walking in, to receiving our food, despite us being the only people seated for most of our visit. We waited probably 20 minutes before even ordering our food which was wild. - One of our forks had food on it. - Our waitress looked and acted like she wanted to be literally anywhere but serving us. We tried hard to be very friendly and bring some sunshine to her day but it seemed like that only made her more annoyed with us (I will say, by the end she had a hint of joy). - When it was time to pay, they used a good, old-fashioned calculator and register to total everything up which I'm all for! Love the ancient systems, when they're used correctly. But a he typed up our order 3x before giving us a total that was at least $10 more than what it should've been but at that point, we just let it go and took the L. The food is amazing, portions large and the prices are very low! .We usually try to eat at different places all the time, but the food is so great here we've been back 3 times in 2 weeks. You could think of Twig and Leaf as a local version of a Waffle House, except the employees actually care and it's better. This place has been around forever...or at least it seems that way. Regardless, it's a great little diner to pop into for breakfast, lunch, or just to get some cheap eats. For a diner, they do have a lot on their menu. Everything has that dirt cheap diner price also, which is awesome. I ended up going with the Twig burger, which was just a classic burger served a la carte. I got some fries to go with it and it was a pretty good lunch. It's definitely not a place to come in with high expectations, but it's a simple restaurant to offer simple pleasures. Great location. And Twig and Leaf has been around for a long time; it is a designated landmark. It's a diner and the menu reflects it's lineage. The food is good, not fancy and not quite up to the standards of a good greasy spoon. Breakfast anytime is always a plus and they do it well. Nothing fancy, the French toast is done right with some powdered sugar on top for presentation. Bacon is crispy and eggs cooked the way you want them; over medium was just that. My wife had the chicken sandwich and fries - LOVED the sandwich, but the onion rings appeared to be from freezer to deep fat fryer. Great views from your booth with floor to ceiling windows looking right out onto Bardstown Road and Douglass circle. It's clean with molded seatlets at the bar and booths with the same molded seats/tables. The seating isn't uncomfortable, though I never really got comfortable. Service was okay. Our server took our order and got it, but she wasn't happy to be there. My guess is that she was working because she had to; granddaughter of the owner. I walked so I can't swear to the parking situation though there is street parking and there's a bus stop right outside the front door. 3 stars as a restaurant, but as a Highlands landmark with good not great food (except the chicken sandwich), it's a 4 star. read more

My dad and I stopped in here on Saturday around lunchtime after a yoga class in the highlands. He raved about Twig and Leaf being one of his favorite staples in Louisville. We sat in a booth and were quickly approached by a friendly waiter. I decided to get The Melt with fries, off the lunch menu. My dad orders the biscuits and gravy platter. My melt came on the wrong type of bread and it had holes in it. The patty was a little chewy which weirded me out..the fries tasted like OreIda frozen fries that just popped out of the oven. My dad really liked his biscuits and gravy but said his bacon was very cold. This place could absolutely use some sprucing up, visually. It's definitely a "hole in the wall" type of spot, which I usually love but I doubt I'll be back here again. read more

So, I had the Waffle Platter (because Leslie Knope) and the waffle was alright. It came with two eggs cooked the way you'd want them, your choice of bacon or sausage (I got bacon, duh). Seriously, fifty points to Hufflepuff for getting my eggs correct. I have paid so much more at fancier places for inaccurately cooked eggs. I also added toast to my order and tator tots, the official potato of Lutheranism. Leslie got the French Toast platter which I think also came with eggs and bacon. We had a size of bacon to share because you always leave a seat open for Ron Swanson at Parks and Rec-Fast. The service was excellent too, not only did they get our order right but he was absolutely frazzled the entire time and it was adorable. I don't know why he was frazzled but I remembered to tip well. The décor is really difficult to call décor. It's always clean when I go here and it's quaint AF. It's not fancy. It's not kitschy. It's just doesn't seem have been updated and I'm really okay with it. It's comfortable in there. I can enjoy my meal there, the coffee is good and they refill your drinks with regularity. Just like its facade, Twig and Leaf's interior has a retro diner feel. Chrome bar stools line the main counter, which faces towards the open kitchen, while diner booths encircle the perimeter of the restaurant. We seated ourselves and were quickly greeted by a server, who promptly got us our drinks. As we perished the menu, the Denver Scramble won out over omelets, as it had everything a girl could want in a hearty breakfast -- eggs, ham, peppers, and potato sticks. It only took a few minutes for the piping hot food to be delivered. The scramble hit the spot, but the potato "nest" underneath it proved to be a little disappointing. I was expecting some golden and crispy potato sticks, and instead it was a pile of tater tots. Nevertheless, it was a satisfying meal that hit the spot. We left, and the aroma of grease followed us out on our clothes. I love diners, but I don't love smelling like one all day.
