STAY AWAY! After reading all the reviews we had high expectations to go here for our 2nd breakfast after the horrible food and coffee at our B&B. After listening to my wife and I discuss what to order, when we started to order, the woman behind the counter interrupted us with a defensive tone to say that they stopped serving breakfast 15 minutes before, which it didn't say on the menu. She mentioned they had baked goods, etc. so I asked if I could have a bagel (which is what I had planned to order to begin with) and she snottily said "of course" even though that item is listed on the "Breakfast"menu which they stopped serving already. The bagel was listed as coming with "Butter" so I asked if they had margarine and she responded, dismissively, "I don't know if its butter or margarine" and when I repeated her response to be sure I had heard correctly she told me I could walk across the restaurant (losing my place in the line, which had now materialized) and ask the kitchen staff. I gave up and just ordered the bagel and a coffee. The Bagel was average but the coffee was as bad or worse than the stuff at the B&B which was one of those filter pack drip machine things. And I don't know if they heard the whole thing but, while walking to our table to wait for our bagel, the owners were both out on the floor. So obviously this woman behind the counter felt very comfortable both not being able to do her job and also doing it rudely with the owners right there. Even though there are VERY few choices for eating in Comfort we avoided this place for the rest of our trip. I was forced to give it at least one star. I wouldn't have otherwise! read more

Mediocre is the only way to describe this place. They are clearly more interested in appearance than substance. Cute place but bland food and unfriendly boarding on rude staff. This was my 3rd time visiting each time has been worse than the last. Three times are not the charm at Highs cafe. read more

Pretty good sandwiches. Not a fan of the pickled veggies. Very clean building and friendly staff. Lots of places to sit inside and outside. They sell wine bottles and a few other things like hats. Overall very quick and good sandwich shop for lunch. read more

We walked up to the door at 4:00 - just as they were closing. The lovely lady (maybe manager) had just put the closed sign in the window and was at the door to lock it. She opened it and explained that they were closed. We asked her if there was another place she could recommend. She named a couple of places and then invited us in to eat. The lady at the counter was so sweet - not a bit annoyed that we were going to likely cause them to stay a little longer. We asked her what we could order that would be quick and easy for them, and she recommended the Italian choped salad and one of the sandwiches. We took her advice on the salad and ordered a sliced turkey sammy plus a couple of sweeties for dessert and a pint of beer to split. The food was DeeeeLISH! We scarfed up the salad - really really yummy. The sammy came with a cauliflowerette and shaved carrot salad with a vinegary dressing that made 2 cauliflower haters into born-again believers. In short - we enjoyed every morsel, bussed our own table and thanked them profusely when we left. Soooo...if you are looking for an exceptionally good light lunch and super friendly folks with good hearts, High's is the place to go. It's got a great little gift shop, nice art and a very pleasant space - especially out in the garden. I recommend it. read more

I tried this place for breakfast and lunch during my weekend at Comfort. The tacos are awesome and cheap: just $1.5! Deli meals are offered for lunch (sandwiches, salads...) Regular stuff. However, I really do appreciate they also offer half sandwiches. Cash for less than $5 orders (I could not get my coffee after lunch due to lack of cash in my pocket). Worth to give it a shoot (specially for breakfast!). read more

Small town restaurant with some specialty items. This restaurant is in a small town, so when you come do not be in a hurry. It can be quick or very busy. They serve both breakfast and lunch. They have coffee, desserts, wine and beer. They have daily hot plate special like shrimp quesadillas or grilled vegetables sandwiches. There is seating both inside and outside. read more

Such a quaint cool town with little shops and distilleries. Wish we had time to spend an afternoon here! The food was incredible. Prices are reasonable, wine by the bottle or glass; nice to see Texas wines sold & served there! Especially the Freedom & Vintners Reserve wines made by nearby Singing Water Vineyards in Comfort, Tx. Highly disappointed. I found this place hoping I could find vegetarian options available. The black bean and avocado taco I ordered was GREAT. The sweets were less than decent, dry and corn tasting. NOT GOOD. AND I had the worst service I've received in the food industry. The middle aged blonde woman who took my order shrugged and dropped her shoulders replied "ugh..really?" When I asked what kind of milk they use. Then she said "I think it's 2%" and I asked what brand and she looked at the other employee behind the counter for validation "I don't know. It's from HEB" she said. I'm highly picky about the foods I will eat when I'm out which is why i eat mostly at home AND the only milk I will consume is organic and from grass fed pasture raised cows. This is for my personal health and environmental reasons, which I shouldn't have to explain. I didn't explain this because I felt so TURNED off by her annoyed attitude. I can't recall interacting with anyone this GRUMPY. Because for all she knew I or someone in my family couldn't been allergic. Anyone who works here could know where their produce comes from. And could be prepared to answer these questions without being rude, upset, indifferent, confused. I felt disappointed in the lack of concern and care. And I didn't order the pancakes because I didn't want to interact with her further. I ask uncommon questions regarding the source of foods I consider ordering at almost every restaurant I go to. This awesome eatery is a hidden gem in the charming town of Comfort! All of the food is from scratch and you can tell the staff takes the time to to make sure the food is presented well. Some of the best crab cakes you'll ever taste, certainly the tastiest sandwiches and simply the BEST desserts you will devour. The ambiance is inviting and the store next to the cafe is filled with wonderful affordable Hill Country gifts from books, candles, lotions and wines to framed photos, birdhouses and hand carved wine bottle racks. I've been eating here for years and generally the food is always good. Recently, there has been an expansion of the restaurant part of this business. The bookstore section has shrunk and the kitchen and eating areas have been enlarged. Today, I stopped in there for lunch and ordered tuna salad on greens and a cup of tortilla soup. As usual, the owner was all smiles and sweetness. However, when I sat down outside with great anticipation for a tasty lunch, after a couple of spoons of the tortilla soup, I started coughing, my nose began to run, and my eyes were watering. This must have been the 10-alarm version of that soup. I went back inside and asked if I could exchange the soup for something else as they only had one kind of soup. I began to get a lecture from the owner - "We don't usually do that, but I guess it will be all right, but just this one time," she said. Then she said that "what did I expect?" Tortilla soup is supposed to be spicy. "Yes," I replied, "but there are different levels of spicyness." I was surprised at this response from the owner. Usually, in restaurants, if you don't like something, the management is more than happy to give you something else. I'm not sure I will eat there again. The food is good, but the attitude of the owner is less than cordial. Also, I've noticed that portions are smaller and prices have been increased a bit. $2.75 for an oatmeal cookie is a bit much. read more

Quaint cute dining spot for cafe style food. We had the chicken tortilla soup, the super grain salad, club sandwich and flatbread. We arrived shortly before closing and we were greeted warmly and served promptly. The chicken tortilla soup has a slight kick to it, the super grain salad was refreshing and the flatbread was very fresh and warm. The sandwhich was a very generous portion and quite tasty. We also sampled the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, it was a nice sweet treat:) read more

Cute spot on the main street in Comfort. Looks like a foodie couple has decided to make their mark in the relaxed world even though serving the public would have to be far from relaxing. Four of us had four different sandwiches and everyone was very happy. 3 of us had their soup of the day which was an Italian white bean soup done extremely well. Its a short detour off I-10 and well worth the stop. I'd eat hear a couple of times a week if it was near my work. read more

Great lunch at High's today: the BLAB sandwich (Bacon, Lettuce, Apple, and Brie), on a croissant. It was so good, I got half way through it before I realized there was no bacon on it! When I took the remaining half back to the kitchen and pointed out this sad oversight, they gladly made me a whole new sandwich, with lots of bacon this time! The side of escabeche was excellent, and the Real Ale Brewhouse Brown was the perfect beverage to go with the meal. The only reason for four stars instead of five was for the community seating we had to resort to - all of the smaller tables were taken! I'd definitely go back if we ever pass through Comfort again. read more

The exterior doesn't look anything like the food you get inside! It's kinda bland on the outside, and ordering is at a counter. But the food! YUM! We had a meatloaf sandwich, a crab cake open-faced sandwich and shared the house salad, everything was unbelievable! I highly recommend this cafe. They also have a nice selection of wine and we bought a California zin that looked interesting. Oh, and they have wine tastings on certain days. Another plus. read more
