Went last night to meet friends. It was the Friday fish fry. We started with cheese curds & bacon jam of course. Also tried the captain & crunch breaded chicken tenders. The homemade honey mustard that comes with for dipping is delicious! I started my main meal off with a cup of the shrimp bisque. This soup was delectable! Extremely creamy and there were shrimp in literally every bite. My husband got the all you can eat fish fry. He really enjoyed it. The portions were very large and it came with 4 big pieces of fish to start, house made chips, Coleslaw & house made corn fritters. I tried one of the corn fritters and o my gosh they were amazing! Almost like a dessert with maple syrup for dipping. I had the Veggie sandwich with a side of fries for my main course. I asked if I could add meat to the sandwich & they allowed me to at an extra cost. I added prosciutto and it put an awesome extra element to an already delicious sandwich. The garlic aioli & fresh mozzarella pair nicely with the fresh grilled taste of the veggies. Really was awesome & I couldn't finish it so I get to eat my other half today! We were in town for the day and found this little gem by accident. The staff was extremely friendly. The service was great. The food was outstanding. I had the Bacon Dip appetizer that was amazing. Wanted to sit outside and at first appeared as though all tables were occupied. Luckily a party left and we were able to sit at their table. Server was very accommodating and made sure we had cushions on our seats and were otherwise taken care of. We got the cheese curds appetizer and the curds were lightly fried and melt in your mouth. I got the all you can eat fish 'n chips. Five fresh, flaky filets with plenty of house made chips and two large house made corn fritters (plenty of corn kernels in the fritters). I could barely finish it! Hubby had the burger special on rye with garlic aioli ; really liked it. Hubby had drafts while I had margaritas which were pretty good. My daughter and I dropped by for dinner last night. My bullet-point review: Beer - Nice draft selection; they had me at Left Hand Milk Stout. Appetizers - We both enjoyed the meat and cheese platter. We both wished for a few more crackers and a little less cheese. The black olives were a tasty addition. Dinner - She had the turkey club, I had the house burger with fries. Both delicious. Ambiance - The bar was crowded and loud, and given its proximity to the main dining area, it was difficult to carry on an uninterrupted conversation. The farther back you sit in the dining room, the better. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate evening, this probably isn't your place, although since it was a Saturday night, it was probably louder than most nights. But overall, the food, drink, and service were very good. Went last night with a big group so we got to order a good portion of the menu. EVERYTHING was delicious. Burger was juicy and cooked perfection. I was told they grind their own. Fish was a large portion and tasty. Grilled cheese was huge. Fresh cut fries were a nice treat. The apps were decent too. The meat and cheese plate had a wide selection. The fried cheese curds were better than any I had in Wisconsin for sure. It's a charming addition to the neighborhood and I'll be back soon and often. read more

My wife and I have been to Highway House about 5 times now since they opened. The food is very good and you get plenty of it. I love the cod tacos! Very nice outdoor area when the weather is nice. Ordered online with plenty of time left to Place an order. The app gave us a deadline to order by and the order was placed 15 minutes before the deadline. Received a confirmation of the order. 35 mins later we received a call that Highway House was cancelling our order. Very unprofessional at the least. If they would have called 30 minutes earlier when they received the order, we wouldn't have had a problem with that. Now we are stuck at 10:05pm looking for something else to eat. read more

The outdoor patio is lovely. Easy parking near. Food is good. Had bruschetta today that was wonderful. So why the mediocre score? The owner. We were here before the pandemic on a really bad Sunday lunch hour. Waited over an hour and still didn't get some of our food. So the owner proceeds to rant to us about the server (a basically sweet girl) and tells us she will be fired. Made a negative experience more negative. Today when we arrived there were few customers and less staff. Except for the owner on the patio watering her plants. Did she greet us? No. Totally ignored us. The only time she spoke to us was when she corrected our waiter/ bartender to tell us they had homemade mojitos. Which we ordered. But they had no mint so we got no mojitos. I'm sure she is a nice lady but perhaps could use some hints on running a hospitality venue. read more

Went on a Friday night with friends that live in the neighborhood and recommended this place. Patio is nice but that's about it. Asked waitress as soon as we got there we needed separate checks. At the end of the night, she brought one check and had to be reminded we asked for separate ones. We all had margaritas. Very weak and overpriced. My one friend had no salt on hers and asked for some. Instead of offering to make her a proper margarita as a replacement, waitress brought out a new glass with salt that my friend had to pour her drink into. Food is unremarkable. My friends had reuben sandwiches which they said were too greasy. I had a polynesian salad which was nothing special. Would have liked to have been offered actual silverware instead of a plastic fork making it a little difficult to eat the salad. At 9:40 pm we were told they were closing soon. But website says they close at 2 am and they closed at 10 pm. Paid in cash and wasn't given the coins back as part of my change. I wish waitstaff would stop assuming I don't want all my change back. Service was poor and waitress had to be constantly reminded to bring stuff to the table she kept forgetting. Would only go back if I could sit on the patio but bring my own food and drinks. I've been to Highway about 10 times, today will be the last unfortunately. I loved this place the first few times I came here. The cheese curds are some of the best around. I raved about the food to my friends, decent burgers, awesome Reuben and ribeye sandwich. Reasonable prices and a stiff pour. So disappointed the last two times I came here. The food has really gone down hill. My Rueben was super salty, not so much the meat as butter on the bread, don't know why it was so salty but it ruined the sandwich for me. Tonight wasn't any better I was craving a cheese burger, I ordered their standard burger extra cheese, medium well. It so well done and dry and had almost no cheese. Plus the fries weren't made to order so they weren't hot, they're usually really good. Then my boyfriend ordered the Ribeye sandwich, last time he got it, it was drenched in aioli. The aioli is good but not when that's all you can taste. This time he asked for it on this side, no problem, but the Ribeye was super fatty. I know the ribeye is a more fatty cut of meat but this was excessive. Waste of money, total bummer. Not sure what happened to this place. If I were the owner I wouldn't of let that food be served to my customers. She's obviously stopped caring what comes out of her kitchen. I would have said something to her personally had she come over to ask how we were enjoying our food, but she was sitting at the bar. If you stop here I would skip the food, except for the cheese curds. Stick to drinks. They have a decent Bloody Mary. I don't live close, plenty of bars I would go to first rather than go out of my way. Really sad, I really liked this place. read more

First impressions were unique: the facade isn't really indicative of the inside, but in a good way. The restaurant is cozy, upscale and clean when you walk in the diner-esque door. We were seated at the patio. Sadly, their liquor license hadn't been secured at the time of our visit (opening day for outdoor seating) and we were moved indoor after being informed that they weren't covered to serve alcohol on the patio. After that, service was mediocre. Our drinks weren't filled promptly enough (gotta go with the carafe, guys) and the move from outside to in wasn't as facilitated as I would've preferred (sounding needy, but this is sincere). Cheese curds, as a Wisconsinite, were fantastic. However, the southwest salad and grilled cheese were underwhelming. Overall, service needs work. Unemotional here, just trying to help. Just moved into the neighborhood, and trying out local places for decent food and drink. Saw this place and remembered it as being a coffee shop and antiques, so decided to give it a go. The bar itself was pretty nice, well laid out with a decent atmosphere. No pretense, unlike a couple of other local "Irish" bars. Service was pretty decent. Greeted upon entry by the server and she was quite pleasant and chatty. Good liquor selection. Several drafts, and a few bottled beers. The food was just ok. The menu was quite short, but had some interesting selections. My fiancée had the corned beef burger. Burger was over cooked and the bun fell apart. Not bad, but not good. I had the fish and chips. (Disclaimer - I'm British, and very picky about fish n chips) In the age of google simplicity, I still don't get how any establishment offering fish and chips has not figured out that the name is a British convention for fish and steak fries. The server did mention it when I ordered - but I didn't catch it. Fish was a decent fillet of cod, deep fried, with a sweet tartare sauce, and deep fried corn bread. Actually not bad... but potato chips!!! It's like pop tarts and caviar. Also, for future reference, salt and malt vinegar are REQUIRED condiments for fish n chips. Prices are a little steep, but not unreasonable. Maybe we will be back to sample other menu items, as they looked good... but it's a big maybe. read more

We live right down the street and have never been here. Heard they had great bloody Mary's so we wanted to try (which was actually really good hence the two stars)it was my husbands birthday on top of it...We sat at the bar and realized one of the bartenders was a good friend of mine I haven't seen in 10 plus years! We were excited to see each other. In the mean time the owner was on everyone's butts about their tables and super micromanaging all of them and it literally wasn't even that busy! She came up to my husband and I and said my friend would not make it because she's making mistakes because we were talking to her. When we literally said once exchange with her! My husband and I felt so weird she would even approach us And I was truly stunned by the encounter we felt weird and closed out! My wife and I went to Highway House for the first time today. We have lived just a half a block away for a year now and finally made it over! We are very happy we came! We had delish fried cheese curds, sliders (Angus, corned beef and chicken) and bacon dip. Everything tasted amazing! The atmosphere is quaint and clean! Nice ambiance one could say. There is a huge outdoor patio (we will try next time) and an upstairs area as well. The bartender/server Kaylynne was extremely sweet and personable! She made us feel like we had known her for awhile and were just old friends catching up! We will definitely be permanent customers!!! read more

Highway house is an awesome little neighborhood bar with a great patio! The menu is very diverse with appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches and large entrees like chicken picatta, fish n chips, and salmon. Everything is made from scratch and so delicious! My favorites are definitely the corned beef sliders, highway salad, and southwest eggrolls. There is always a good craft beer selection on tap and your normal domestic and imports in bottles as well as a big selection of wines. This definitely one of my go tos for good food and spending a summer night on a patio! read more

This was the best chicken wrap I have ever had. The cheese curds inside made the sandwich phemonenal. I went with ranch instead of the house sauce since I'm not a big siracha fan. The fries are perfectly crispy and have some of the crunchy outer layer of the potato. The staff was extremely friendly. I will be back regularly even for to go orders. We stopped by here to check this newer-to-the-neighborhood place out and were very pleasantly surprised. All of the food is homemade and is quite tasty. We ordered sandwiches for the meal and also ordered some of the more creative appetizers. The sandwiches were fantastic, top of the line. The apps were good, but when we go back, we'll be sticking to some of the more mainstream fare. There is also a nice bar inside that we did not patronize that day, but it looks nice and well stocked and deserves a follow-up visit. And if it's nice outside, be sure to sit in their fabulous outdoor garden patio area. This is a great addition to the neighborhood and stands on its own two feet anywhere in Chicago. My girl and I were looking for a new place to eat near our place. She found Highway House on the internet so we decided to give it a shot. THANK GOD WE DID. I can't say enough about this place. That first week, we ate there 4 times. We go at least once a week. It's a hidden gem that hasn't really caught on to the foodies yet. As soon as it does, you won't be able to get a seat. Everything that we've had there is perfect. I don't know how they do it. I have a theory that they're putting crack in their food. It's sooooo addicting. Just 1 example. I HATE fish. I mean despise, never eat, will starve first, hate fish. My girl ordered the fish fry and it looked so good that I had to try it. It was amazing. I've never had fish that good in my life. Went here once during lunchtime while it was slow, so we thought it would be a nice fast lunch. However, it still took forever to get our food with only three tables of people (including us) being there! It took around 45 minutes to get our meals, which is a ridiculously long time to wait for food, especially when the restaurant only had three tables filled. Once we got our food it was subpar for the most part. I ordered the cod fish tacos, which were on a very large taco shell (much too large for the portion inside), and the whole dish was just one soft texture with no prominent flavors standing out. My party also ordered the sliders, and the menu said that it was on "sweet bread", so we thought it would be some nice home-made bread. However, the sliders came on pre-packed Hawaiian rolls instead of fresh-rolls and were just a sloppy mess as a whole. The third meal was the only good food that we got, which was a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger tasted great, was quite large, and was cooked nicely - which was much different from the other meals that we received. The waitress was nice, but overall it was just a disappointing experience, and we will not be coming back. read more

What a pleasant surprise. I have been wanting go try this place since it opened. Went yesterday early evening. Sat on the patio. It was lovely. I ordered the Highway House burger with fries and my son ordered the pot roast sandwich with chips. It was exactly what I wanted. The burger was charred nice and it was juicy. Fries were fresh cut and salted the right amount. The bun was a grill toasted fresh Kaiser roll. My son's pot roast sandwich came on thick sliced grill toasted sour dough with horse radish cream sauce and fetch fried onions. Both sandwiches were huge a we took half of our meal home. Great the next day. Loved the laid back atmosphere and good vibe. I definitely will be back. read more

First of all, server didnt know what beers were on tap, she commented that the bartender keeps switching them out. When I went up to the bar, to check, she was also the bartender...UM ok! She was also the only person working on a sunny afternoon, with like 10 tables, so the service was slow, but not her fault. They also didnt have a lot of things avaiable food wise, that were on the menu. Every time I would order an appetizer, "we are out of that", even though they opened an hour before.....We ordered food, mostly good, but the burger I got was SUPER greasy!! like dripping with grease, I patted it with my napkins to get some off, but I still ended up getting an upset stomach from it the rest of the day! Stopped here for breakfast in the summer and it was phenomenal. Hadn't been back until today. We had lunch and everything was beyond our expectation. The Southwest egg rolls where excellent. My wife had the Polynesian chicken salad that she absolutely loved. I had a bowl of chili and a side salad that was fantastic as well. We're definitely coming back again.
