Really poor restaurant in general. Atmosphere is what it looks like from the street, not pleasant (we thought the food might make up for it, it didn't). Food was extraordinarily delayed, with no real reason or explanation. Nachos were a single layer on a small plate. Food was poor. Service was poor (nothing was timely, even drinks took 25 minutes). The drinks are very tasty. My partner and I went for dinner around 8:30pm on a Sunday. It took a while to get a waitress. It took longer to get our drinks. We weren't served our drinks until 30 min after we were seated. It took over an hour to get a plate of nachos. The nachos were very tasty but only came with about 12 chips loaded with toppings. We asked for more chips but never got them. We ordered the nachos hijoles, tostones, mofongo, and al pastor fajitas. 10 minutes after ordering, the waitress informed us there was no more plantains left. I reordered my entree as chicken enchiladas and we decided we didn't need to share an extra dish in place of the mofongo. My enchiladas came out 15 min after the nachos. They were very okay. Not great or memorable and there were no sides included. Average at best. We waited another 15 minutes for my partner's fajitas before I asked the waitress where they were. She went back to the kitchen to ask. At this point, it's 10:15pm and we got 12 chips and 3 enchiladas on par with a frozen meal. The waitress came back and informed us that the kitchen canceled all orders because of lack of water and we would not be getting the fajitas. This would've been fine if we were told earlier in the meal or were given an option to order something else. Other people in the restaurant were still getting food served to them actively. It was 10:45pm before we got our check for our drinks, nachos, and enchiladas. I was pretty shocked to see the almost $80 bill for the amount of food we got, the lack of timely service, and no communication about our missing food. So after tip, it ended up being close to $100 for my partner to not even get a meal. I recommend drinks here but I would not come back or eat here again. read more

Two of us visited Hijole on March 9 for a late lunch. It wasn't very busy at all. We placed an order for a Crab Salad and a Stuffed Avocado. 8 minutes later, the server came to us and said they didn't have the Stuffed Avocado, but suggested the 3 Taco set, which comes with carnitas and eggs. 1. 22 minutes later, approximately half an hour after our order, my Crab Salad, which is supposed to be comprised of King Crab per the menu, contained imitation crab! I mentioned this to the Server, who mumbled something about asking the cook/manager about it, then never got back to me. 2. Interestingly, the Crab Salad had chunks of avocado, so...why couldn't they have made the Stuffed Avocado in the first place? 3. Finally, when we got our bill, the Server said there was an extra charge for the Carnitas, because the Tacos didn't come with it. They never amended the bill for the King Crab salad that had no king crab. 4. We did not review Yelp before eating here. It was close to our Airbnb location. Now looking at the reviews, our experience was similar to the one posted by Nellie M. They charged us extra for the side of carnitas even though the Server indicated this was part of the 3 Taco Set. This is apparently standard practice for those whom the restaurant thinks are tourists. (We had carry-on luggage with us). 5. In summary, they claimed a) they didn't have one order, but apparently had the ingredients for it, b) replaced another order with a cheaper imitation, c) took half an hour to do this, d) charged us extra for a side the Server intimated already included in her recommendation, and e) didn't do a gosh darn thing about it. I was so incensed that I resolved not to leave a tip, and when I came back from the restroom, my friend had already paid and left a 20% tip. She's nice that way, but talk about enabling behavior. Go to Metropol across the street for excellent service, generous portions, and similar prices, or Las Canarias Bakery 2 blocks away for huge portions and tasty food. read more

Not really sure why there are so many good reviews on this place... we were very excited to go there last night based on this yelp page and the cool blue lighted "club-ish" interior, but when we actually sat down that's when things started to immediately change. The hostess (who turned out to be our server) greeted us at the door and told us to pick our table, so we did and we sat down. He then promptly informed us that they were out of all avocado and ceviche (literally the only things I had come there for and was so excited to try, so that was just a sad thing to learn) however, we decided to stay anyways and give it a shot. We were presented with a small bowl of tortilla chips and two shots of frozen margarita. The marg was very tasty and I ended up ordered two of them while my boyfriend stuck with the classic margarita over ice. We were sitting by a sign that said "frozen margaritas $3" (this was the only part of the sign in English) and the top of the sign was in Spanish saying (roughly translated) "Tuesday for ladies only"..... this is NOT OKAY to trick tourists and people who don't speak Spanish with this price gouging. The prices for drinks are nowhere to be found on the menu, so as any other person with English as my main language I figured the frozen margarita was $3... turns out it was $8.98. Now that is a pretty significant price increase that was quite shocking when we received our check. We paid it anyways. Let's get on to the food..... we ordered "melted cheese" for our chips and waited over 30 minutes (ordered before the tables around us and were served after reminding another server in the restaurant that we ordered an appetizer and hadn't gotten it yet) it finally showed up cold. I know this because the table next to us ordered the same thing and it came out bubbly and steaming and looked great. Ours was literally almost hard and the cast iron serving ware was able to be touched with bare hands. We were both very hungry so we just ate anyways and hoped for the best for our meal. Let me add here that right before this came out, 30 minutes into our experience we had to request silverware and napkins and had also ordered a second round of drinks (and a first round of waters) that were nowhere to be found. Finally, waters... second round of margaritas.. they are delivered. Now my boyfriend got some tacos that looked pretty good.. but I still didn't have my veggie fajitas that I had ordered. I made him go ahead and eat so his food wouldn't get cold, and he said it was a good taco dish. However there was some form of avocado paste on the plate..... WHY WOULD YOU BE "out of avocados" AND YOU SERVE THIS PASTE?! Clearly this place is NOT fresh. The "paste" was absolutely repulsive by the way. Finally I get my fajita dish, once again I know my food has been waiting in the pick up window area because it is COLD! No sizzling cast iron full of $17 worth of veggies... it is a cool to touch cast iron that is 2/3 of the way full of onions, peppers and 4 pieces of broccoli and some very thinly sliced carrots. This is PATHETIC. I sent back the corn tortillas I got with my meal that were extremely old and stale, and tried to eat the fajita skillet with a fork. It was DISGUSTING. Absolutely disgusting. We asked for our check and the server took my full plate without even asking how everything was. No one cared how our food was, no one cared how our service was. And our tab was $87!!!!!! With added tip this horrible service, with horrible food that I didn't even eat costs us $100. I am appalled at the service and the gross food pumped out of this establishment and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO EAT. Now with all of this said... the frozen margarita was actually pretty damn good. Not $8.99 when you think it's $3 good... but if you're a woman and looking to go get wasted somewhere with cool lights on a Tuesday and don't want to eat... go ahead. i am not one to give bad reviews but i felt like everyone should know about this place. HORRIBLE SERVICE, we were seated and the server asked for our drinks after he brought HALF the tables drink he would not come back the other half of the table waited about 25 mins for lemonade and water bottle??!! we waited and waited for him to take our order finally he came to get our appetizers but NOT our orders (for some reason he did not want to take our order yet) we waited about one hour and he finally came to take our order even though we would ask him over and over if we could place our order he would say "yes one second" and then leave for 15 mins. Food took about another 45 mins!!! the food was horrible no one at our table liked their meal. 2.99 for barbecue sauce and sour cream which is ridiculous and when my friend told him she did not like her drink because it was very watered down he was very annoyed at us and refused to change it for a new one. all we asked for was for him to bring a new lemonade with less ice, he literally refused to do it and said if he gets a new one we will have to pay for it. Overall, this dinner was a big let down terrible customer service we waited 1 hour to place our orders and 45 mins to get the food, if you are thinking about eating here please find a new place!! Negative experience dining at the Isla Verde location on 02/12/2019. Out of all the problems we had during our service, the main issues were the server's lack of transparency when making a dining recommendation and that he ordered the wrong item for one of our guest. First, the special that night was a stuffed avocado with fish, our server suggested that we have it with a side of rice and beans, which my husband and I agreed to. When the bill arrived later we found out that we were charged for our sides, the avocado and the main course. At no point did the server convey that there would be an extra charge for the sides or the avocado. Second, one of our guest ordered chicken fajitas and what arrived was a chicken quesadilla. When the bill arrived, both the fajita and the quesadilla was on the bill. We highlighted this and the server did remove the items. During service there were several issues; the server never brought us water, he came to take our order without even giving us menus and he was unable to answer any questions about the menu. At one point my husband asked how the Tito's margarita was made and he responded "no idea, I guess it has vodka". It was also disappointing that at no point did a member of the management team come to check in on us, even after the quesadilla mishap. I sent an email the next day to management and I have yet to hear from them. read more
