I go here for lumber always since it's the most convenient place in town and great staff in the yard with reasonable prices. Overall, great inventory but for smaller items inside I need help with (like plumbing projects, small hardware oddities, key copies, etc.), I'll go to their competitor who have more staff on the floor but not before grabbing a sandwich from the deli which is excellent and the best bargain in town! read more

They've managed to send me out the door by taking part a couple of screws within minutes everything was done. The indoor plant section of hills flat is amazing! I love the selection of indoor plants they offer as well as pot choices! Super unique options to choose from! Their outdoor plant area is pretty large! They had a great selection of veggie starts that were great organic quality! The garden manager is so nice and super informative if you need any help with questions or how to's. The one downside I think is the inside of the store is a bit confusing! It's very large inside, and they have a great carhartt section and a lot of Womens carhartt! It's a little strange though; the carhartt area is all closed off maybe they have had bad theft before but it's a little inconvenient! I just love how big their selection is for women. GE Cafe Double oven, induction Monogram cooktop and 2 GE dishwashers. All amazing. We had one small mishap and Tim fixed it RIGHT away. I also bought everything on sale and was not ready to put in the kitchen and needed it all to be delivered to storage. After kitchen was completed Hills Flat came back to my storage and brought it to the house at no charge with great service. Had to go to Hills Flat to get a few thing from the lumber yard. No one around to help me. Guy in the security shack was busy watching videos. Went inside to get some sheet metal. Took the roll up to the rental counter where two guys just stared at me like I was bothering them. No "Can we help you?" or " Do you need that cut?". So I had to say that I needed a few feet cut off the roll and was told they could do it. The big guy just closed his eyes and nodded his head like he was so put out to have to work. So sorry dude. Get the piece cut, pay and walk out. I needed the guy in the guard shack to check out the receipt for the items I got in the yard. Im standing 6 feet away from him yelling at him and hes so engrossed in his videos he cant even hear me. When he finally looked up he just waved me away to lazy to do his job. Purchased a very expensive driving lawnmower. After a few years, it would not go in reverse, so brought it in for service. I was told that the year I purchased, husqvarna used a "plastic" transmission, and the unit could NOT be serviced. Hills did not stand by their product they sold me, and recommended that I drive to Reno to buy a replacement. They quoted $1000 to replace the transmission. Nothing like learning you purchased a non-serviceable tractor that is ready for landfill. read more

Ordered several pieces of lumber and paid to have it delivered. Whoever delivered it left the 11ft planks going completely across My driveway and in a puddle...the wrap job was poorly done and half of the wood was wet by the time i arrived home from work. Also they wrapped it in white and then left it across my driveway when it was snowing. Upon opening several boards appeared to be damaged so i am unsure as to whether they came like that or because there was snow on the ground it was run over by a fedex delivery later in the day... super upset about spending close to 300$ on wood that's now wet, damaged and some that had been promised to be cut were not...very disappointed in how this turned out. read more

For my visit, afternoon on 12 17 2018: Want so bad to love this place as it is a very tidy, generally well run independent hardware store with items you cannot find at the big boxes. Have had some great experiences here buying household tools (blower and weeder for example) but this holiday trip had a few hiccups that I find to be less than impressive....in particular, they seem unusually paranoid about theft and have some archaic checkout procedures: - First stopped in the Carhartt clothing department. The employee was busy doing something under her counter and did not greet. OK. Not a big deal. Looked around a bit and went to other departments. Came back later. She did not greet the second time, despite my wandering all through the area. When I did find something to buy though, she made a point of interrupting another customer's question to "see if I was going to do more shopping"....aka you cannot leave the area with that item is how I interpreted it....told her "no I am done" She then directs me to check out with the checkers in the front across from her, you know, the direction I was "already heading". This associate seemed to be having a bad day...to say the least. Pro Tip #1: Clothing security tags like other stores use, could solve issues with clothing that is unpaid for "shrinking" in the other parts of the store. A sign would also help if you do now want customers "traveling" with unpaid clothing around the place. - Went to area near the tool rental counter to get a type of fuel for the blower. They only had one unit out (wanted at least three), but had others in cases of four. No one around to ask if I can break open a case or to do it for me. I wanted to buy more than one so I took a case up front where..... - I check out (this employee was all smiles and very nice) She tries to scan the case, told her they are supposed to be scanned one at a time, she calls a manager over, the manager opens the case, makes a joke (which I took the right way no offense) about theft (see why I think they are obsessed in here)....and directs cashier to scan each one....ok. Then we get to the part where I pay. They have a chip reader, but it does not work. You slide your card. THEN you hand the credit card to the cashier....yeah I know, 1998 is back. Anyway, the cashier is then per company policy, asks for ID (which is against VISA rules) She then has to check signatures on your ID against your credit card. Wow. And all for a purchase that was well under 100. - Another interaction in the store during this visit....I pop my head out an open door to the garden center (while holding a hand basket with merchandise). I look around for the person I came in with. Never mind the rest of my body is in the store, and that most of the year you can walk out there with unpaid merchandise. This gets the attention of a security guard in plain clothing "Do you need some help sir"...."no I am looking for the person I came in with"....he was appropriate overall but my goodness did I just come in here just after a major heist or what? Pro Tip #2: A sign saying "No unpaid merchandise outside" or similar would be a good idea. It is worth noting that both prepurchase interactions with employees were security related....and at "no" time did an employee directly ask me if I needed help in a stand alone manner. This despite visiting every side of the main store including plumbing, paint, hardware and stain. And no, the store was not busy. Pro Tip #3: During the holiday season, having extra help assigned to simply ask customers if they need help is usually the best way to limit shrinkage (aka shoplifting). This lets all customers know that staff is aware of their presence. Note to self....Buy your Carhartts online or at another retailer.......and maybe give Hills Flat a few months "break" before another visit. Wow. Merry Christmas! read more

As a home builder that goes out of my way not to shop here, not as much for the unfriendly service but more for the jacked up pricing on basically everything on the property I still begrudgingly are in a bind sometimes and will make a purchase. This time I purchased some special screws that I didn't need so I brought them back for a credit in my account. The person said I didn't purchase them on my account, but I explained I did and for the mere fact they are they only one around who sells the brand I'm not confused. He walks away and comes back and says he can see his inventory is off by one that was sold but the can't place what account. I'm like say no more, I'm that missing account. Please credit my account. He stares at me for 30 seconds and I ask are you not going to credit my account. He simply says no and stares at me some more. I have no words but I do have advice. Price check before you shop here I find them on average 15-30% higher than anywhere else around. What a terrible business model. . read more

I just stopped at Hills Flat Lumber in Grass Valley. None of the employees, and only about 50% of the customers, were wearing face coverings, and they didn't seem to be practicing social distancing. This is very disappointing because face coverings are now mandatory in all public places, including retail stores, and Nevada County just had a large increase in COVID cases recently and the numbers continue to go up. I wear a mask or bandana in stores because, if the experts are correct, I could potentially prevent someone from getting sick and/or dying. If the experts are wrong, the most I'm out is the inconvenience of wearing a piece of fabric on my face. I expect the same respect from other people, especially the store employees. read more

I try to avoid this place as they are way over priced however, sometimes they do have certain material available that may not be readily available at the other lumber yards. This was the ONLY reason I was here to begin with! After calling and being told they had what I was looking for I went into the yard to grab it. Having no help from the yard employees that were too busy smoking cigs, I searched the yard for 15 min and could not find the material. I went inside to ask the counter and was directed to the upstairs of another warehouse which again, having no help, could not find what I was in search of. On my way out I noticed another item I was in need of and asked a customer service guy standing there of the price as it was not labeled. He says to me "I don't know, but were closed" In astonishment I looked at the time and seeing there was still 5 min until closing, grabbed the item and brought it to the counter for a price check. The old grumpy dude proceeded to follow me saying "were closed, were closed" Ignoring him I waited in line at the register to ask about the material I was looking for and get a price on this, (of course, way overpriced tool bag) all the while this old guy standing there mean muggin me. After being told the material was "at the colfax location only" I go to put the item back on the shelf, (still being followed by the incompetent grouch) the announcement over the loud speaker asking that customers proceed to the check out is made. I looked at Oscar (who was still stalking me) and shook my head in disbelief. Every since building their giant outlet on the mountain Hillsflat has been priced 30% to 55% over the exact same items sold at the other local hardware stores. Now with these dirtbag customer reps and lack of service, Im out for good. I guess all these rich bay area folks can support it, the locals know better. read more

Went for a 2x10x10 primed piece of siding. The local Home Depot was out of it so we decided to come here in a last ditch effort. $168 for a 20 foot piece. Decided to get it anyway and have it cut Inti two 10 foot pieces. Was extremely hard to flag someone down but after walking around for a bit, we finally found someone actually willing to help. After I had it cut, the two pieces were placed in the truck but it seemed like they were off a little. Made a measurement and sure enough one piece was 10' 1/2" and the other 9" 11 1/2". Went to the register and to mention this and the lady just looked at us like we're were annoying her. No "oh, I'm sorry about that". She's says "and?" Not even sure why but had to just pay and walk away just to get out of that place. Highest prices by a lot, by far the worst customer service and they can't even cut a piece of wood at the right length. Also, they CHARGE $3 per cut. FIRST AND LAST TIME ILL EVER COME HERE. I've been in this store 3 times and 2 out of those 3 times one employee has stood out and displayed an extremely negative attitude. There's a way to talk to customers and not come off as smug and condescending. The first time her attitude was dismissive and she acted like I was an annoyance to her day as she checked me out at the register. The second time her smug attitude was with another customer and she was again upset she had to "work." After I observed her disrespect that customer, she then interrupted me and told me not to touch the clothing items as it was a "danger" to them and the public due to covid 19. She abruptly told me there was a sign posted but that was at the dressing rooms. I informed her there was no sign where I was at. I informed her that I wouldn't be spending my money then. As I left the store I again heard her complaining about another customer to someone. If you don't want to work, quit. The managers should place her somewhere where her contact with customers is minimal.......You just cost your company $500 because I brought my business to tractor supply and won't be back to this location. I don't know her name but she's a white female in her 40s with an 80s style haircut that wears to much makeup. Not trying to degrade her looks, just describing what I see.
