"Meh, I've experienced better" sums it up but I am giving it 3 stars. I LOOOOOVE the decor so 1 star for that. The menu is pretty limited for vegetarians- mac & cheese, kale caesar salad, a tomato cheese sandwich, vegetarian lasagne, and beet sandwich. I had the beet sandwich. The bread was dark, burned and so hard that my mouth is cut the morning after. My date's steak was promised medium rare and was far more medium. We both had fries and they were soggy and drizzled with some fattening grease. We would have sent both back, which we never ever do, but our food took a long time to receive and our waitress was MIA. The beer selection is so minimal, and hard to believe with the vast local beers in Austin. I would have ordered the oysters but they were around $38 for a dozen and that's like 2 entrees. I will be back to try brunch because the patio and new addition are so beautiful. We really wish they would turn the beverage and dessert case into a bar like other brasseries in town. Walked in there this afternoon with about 6 friends. Its Thursday around 8ish so its NOT crowded. First thing the guy says is "Do you have a reservation?" The restaurant is EMPTY so why he asked us I have no idea. There were maybe 4 tables inside that had people seated and 1 or 2 outside. When we told him no, he said that they didn't have a table large enough for our group and that we'd have to sit outside. I TOLD him to push some tables together and that we'd be fine. I guess he couldn't think of a valid argument as to why he couldn't do it so that's where we sat. Our waitress was okay. Mediocre. Ordered the crab cake and she said it was enough for two...it wasn't. It was the size of a child's palm. The malt vinegar fries were pretty good and the crab cake was tasty. When she brought the check, I asked her to split it. "Between all of you?" she asked....only 4 of us ended up eating either due to the shadiness of the workers or menu. I said "Yes. The four of us." She didn't seem to happy about that but obliged. The food was okay. The service awful. Definitely felt discriminated against. Trying to sit us outside and then telling us that they didn't have space available inside? We can see. I'll tell everyone I know about how they treat patrons at this establishment. Love this place! My gf & I went recently and had the most delicious and best food I've had in forever. We ordered almost everything on the appetizer menu (half off at HH!) and were practically causing a scene over how delicious it was. The shepherd's pie was particularly delish. The staff there are great- really nice and down to earth. Our server, Ernestina, was perfect, not hovering but always there when we needed her, and really sweet. Not saving the best for last or anything, but the drinks were crazy yummy. I really loved the French 76, but everything we tried was delicious. I'm a regular and I will return, BUT, the inconsistency in food quality and service remains. I sat down this afternoon and watched as two waitresses helped everybody else in the room (even those who sat after I did) and I was never acknowledged, so I left. I called to explain my frustration and the person who answered the phone seemed to have an attitude, so I just hung up. Given that the employees are young, I think they need better training. It is Austin, so the uber hipness can get you by for a while, but I think it's time to step it up guys. I would have written a private email to the manager instead of a review, but whoops, but I couldn't find a way to communicate with anybody through the website other than making a reservation. Had brunch there for the first time today. The bacon, sunny-side up eggs, and toast, were each as delicious as could be. I make sunny-side up eggs all the time, and they never taste as good as they did here. I was also pleased to see Aperol Spritz on their drinks menu, which is a popular Italian drink, but pretty hard to find over here. We went to this place the other night because a friend wanted to try it out. We walked in and the place looked really nice and our waitress was very friendly. The menu is very short, I think they have like 5 or 6 entrees but they dont serve gnocchi anymore and I wasnt sure on which one to order because none of them looked that good for me. The restaurant is just okay. Monday nights they have 1/2 price oysters on the half shell - east coast in addition to gulf oysters - this is the main thing they do well. Amidst a trendy, hip atmosphere - they are lacking on management. The night we went they were out of propane for the outside heaters - and also ran out of oysters. Clearly the managment needs to work on their skills in the ording department. Other than that, service is slow, but the food is tasty nonetheless. read more

Hillside Farmacy is a wonderful addition to the East Side! It is my go-to place for a simple delicious breakfast-2 eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast and coffee. It is also one of my favorite places for a perfect dinner. The ratatouille is amazing if you are a vegetarian and the pork chop is excellent if you are a meat eater. They also have a full bar with great cocktails. Definitely try an ice cream sandwich for desert! read more

I was really excited to try this place, but sadly it did not live up the hype. I love the feel and design of this place, but no matter how "cute" it is, it doesn't make up for the sub-par food and service. A friend and I came in for brunch on a Sunday, and we waited over 30 minutes for a table for two, even though when we came in there was an empty two person table right there by the entrance, and by the time we were seated there were 3 available tables. Anyhow, I had the fried egg sandwich with fried green tomatoes. I came specifically to get this sandwich and unfortunately it just wasn't good. So as much as I'd like to love this place, I just can't, and I probably won't be returning. read more

The decor and people working there are great. But the food was pretty meh. I had the Spring Vegetable Lasagna. Not a lot of vegetables in it, not a whole lot of cheese either. An awful lot of an Alfredo type sauce, heavy and creamy. Didn't taste bad but not what I expected. No tomatoes. All that would have been fine, but I felt heavy and bloated after eating it. Gassy. Woke up thirsty as heck, like it had been full of msg or something. My husband had a flavorless steak. I may see if their sandwiches are better but won't be going back for dinner. read more

I'm only making this review for the brunch. I went with my girlfriend and ordered oysters a coffee for her and our food right when we sat down pretty much. Our ticket time on the oysters were like 15-20 minutes with an added 20 minutes for our entrees. My entree was mediocre at best the caramelized onions and baguette were the best part. They just slapped some eggs over cooked sausage and arugula on top of that. It wasn't very put together. The ambiance was pretty nice tho. I liked the actual restaurant. I'd like to try it again for dinner. My biggest qualm was that on the menu it said the oysters were 8 for half a dozen and 16 for a dozen. After my bill of 50 dollars after splitting the check I found out they were twice as much and I was mislead and not warned. Be a better server. I don't care how busy you are. Inform your guest on what's up and what's going on. That's coming from a seasoned food industry employee of all positions. read more

I would give the service zero stars, but the food (whenever I ordered it through Favor) is pretty good. My boyfriend and I came in to eat for lunch, and we weren't dressed to the standard of everyone else (it's a super cute place, and everyone was in cute outfits and we rolled out of bed lol). There was a couple in front of us, but they were off to the side- we were waiting by the hostess stand. A guy comes out to greet and seat us, but we told him that there was a couple in front of us. He says oh okay. Before he can say anything else, this girl rushes out, and says that they were here first (pointing to the other couple) and giving us a rude look. He tells them that there's a table ready, but they told him that they were waiting for a certain table. So he seats us. The same girl was our waitress. She doesn't greet us. It took her five minutes to put water in front of us. She doesn't even ask if we wanted anything else to drink (a couple drinks could have increased her tip if we were the type of couple that always tips 20% just FYI). Ten minutes later, she comes and says "what do you want?" We give her our order, and she walks off. Lol. That's pathetic service. I watched her make her way to other customers and helping them and ignoring us. I work in the service industry. I can tell you that that is definitely not how people are trained to act towards customers. Also, I can tell you that some servers judge customers. For instance, if they don't think that you'll be a good tipper, they won't spend as much time on you as other customers. I'm going to break down what happened as best as I can to people who never worked in restaurants. In our case, we were both young and dressed sloppily in comparison to other customers. I assume that she was expecting us to tip poorly (college kids have a stigma for not tipping generously due to being in school), so she treated us poorly. When we came, she was next to be seated, so she wanted the other couple to be seated with her because they looked like/are better tippers. It's obvious by the way she acted when the host looked like he was going to seat us before them. She probably had talked to them previously, but I kinda doubt it because they had a specific table in mind that she wasn't aware of. When we were seated, I didn't even know she was our server because she didn't bother to greet us and took five minutes to place water at our table sans introduction. Let me explain it to you; the restaurants I worked at made me greet the tables within 45 seconds (I've worked in airports where there's a high turn over rate, so you could be seated 3 times in a row). Tables were filled when we arrived, yes, but I saw her just walk around not really doing anything high pressure. She not only made us feel unwelcomed, but had the audacity to say "what do you want?" Anyone with common sense can tell that the statement is kinda rude. We placed our order, and she walked away. *end of the dissection of our service* Lol if you're the server who served my boyfriend and I, I just want you to know that I tip anywhere from 20-100% depending on the service. So it was your loss when we canceled the order because of how you treated us (boyfriend also didn't like the atmosphere; he thought it was a little too uppity for him). I only came because I've ordered from Favor before and thought the food was amazing. But it's not amazing enough to keep me from ordering again. I don't support restaurants who allow their workers to act like that. read more

Our favorite was the PeeWee Sandwich (pork belly), but the Thank You and the Wasabi Bloody Mary were also delicious. I moved to Austin a year ago form Williamsburg, Brooklyn where I was regular at Marlow&Sons, a great place. I was so happy to find Hillside Farmacy that appeared to have a similar style... not so fast. Me and my boyfriend were in denial and went to eat there a few times and OMG. The food was a sheer disappointment and I don't think we will ever go back. I could tell by my boyfriend's face that he was making an effort to find that food interesting or even edible but no way. I loved the aesthetics and the people who work there seem to fit into the scene. I don't mind them being hipsters but why can' t they be more competent and efficient?! Why one thing or the other? Why can't it be both?! I was reading all these bad reviews and laughing. Apparently, humor expresses the highest level of disappointment. And there are so many of them! Why the owner doesn't do something about it, it seems pretty obvious. This place is not going to do too well, but what really could be a success it's to open some kind of group therapy center in some shack near by, for everybody who payed a visit to the Farmacy. Today was my second time dining at Hillside Farmacy. The first time was on Mother's Day and by the time I got home, my stomach was rolling. I had eaten pate', duck confit and assorted cheeses. All of it was very good, all be it very rich. I think the mimosa and coffee I had first didn't mix well with the fat and protein. Therefore, I didn't feel it was due to the quality of the food. Today was very nice. Although it was 96 degrees, I was seated at a shady table outside near a fan with a nice breeze also coming through. My friend joined me shortly after I arrived. We ordered drinks and lunch. I am an avid coffee drinker, so I had a latte' and a fountain soda with booze; strawberry, basil, balsamic with rum. My friend ordered a grapefruit jalapeno margarita. Both were very tasty and perfect for a hot summer afternoon. We each ordered a sandwich; I had the meatball grinder and my friend had the thank you, turkey, sprouts and strawberry jam. Both were good. I love the atmosphere at Hillside and like having a relaxing outside seating area so close to home. It is a bit pricey but that seems par for the course in comparison with so many of the other small cafes and restaurants popping up in east Austin. The building used to be Gene's po' boys and I had never stopped in to eat there but heard it was good. Not sure what happened to them. But the remodel for Hillside was a success. It is beautiful and clean inside and the outside is inviting, reminding me of New Orleans a bit. I will definitely go back but mostly for brunch and happy hour. read more

Wow, just had the best experience at HIllside Farmacy. Everything down to the music made me happy. The hostess was friendly, our waitress was very knowledgeable and sweet, and the food was incredible. My cocktail was delicious and strong and the fish special was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. I wanted to lick the plate. Also, they have Stumptown coffee and Zhi tea. Everything tonight couldn't have been better. Although this was my first dinner experience at Hillside, I did stop in once before to get something quick to eat and received wonderful customer service that left me feeling really good about the place. Speaking of hipsters. Hipsters. And more hipsters. So, I feel ambiguously about this place. The food is good, most of the time. They have random specials every once in a while that are hit or miss. I gave it four stars because the environment is awesome, no doubt about that. The service is good. They allow dogs outside- love that. The have a gluten-free sandwich, awesome. But again, the specials are hit or miss. On one occasion, neither my husband nor I could eat the special because it was too strong and tangy. And, why can't they serve their sandwiches with chips? If you get a sandwich, you have to order a bag of chips on the side. It just feels like, if it's lunchtime and you order a sandwich, it should be accompanied by something right? We still eat here all the time and usually have a really positive and happy experience but the tangy special and lack of chips with lunch prevent me from giving it five stars. read more

I was here just before 5 pm, needing a little sustenance before heading out for the evening. My first time here. The meat & cheese plate at $16 is, as someone else has remarked, meh... Not quite sure what is farm to plate about this dish's main ingredients. The cheeses are good, which is why I often buy them from Costco. However, the 3 slivers of pickled green tomatoes are excellent and salty, as are the 5 fried capers. The teaspoon of jalapeno jelly is pretty good. The rillettes of beef tongue, bland.
