Newbies to experience Hillside Farmacy. We had early dinner reservations on a Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We read other reviews and photos and knew that the majority of the tables are cafe style, so we wanted a little more room and noted it in our reservations. When we arrived we were promptly greeted and shared that we had reservations. We were seated by the hostess at a cafe table, but were quickly relocated by a gentleman who said he saw our seating preference. Hillside Farmacy is an imitate restaurant with detail to decor-- loved the history on the walls. Our waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu; she answered all of our questions. We had a wonderful meal. We started off with a shrimp cocktail and cheese plate appetizer. For our entree, we ordered chops and the fish -- then topped it off with a cream brûlée. I must confess that my spouse is somewhat resistant to venture to the downtown area. However, I have been following Hillside Farmacy on Instagram and on Yelp and he followed my suggestion. We will be returning! We really want to join brunch, but know it will be packed-- great food, atmosphere and service. read more

Beautifully decorated! I thought I walked in to a garden or a floral shop. Not only the restaurant was aesthetically pleasing, but the food was also top notch. I ordered the fried egg sandwich which was rich in flavor, especially with the crispy bacon. My friend got the smithy sandwich, and she thought it was pretty good too. Portion size was huge. As for sides, I recommend the fries here! The fries were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Overall, I would say Hillside is one of the best brunch spots in Austin! read more

Hillside Farmacy is a really cute spot on the East side with locally sourced food and delicious cocktails. Its mainly a breakfast/lunch place but we went for dinner and it was nice and quiet. We shared the sangria, kale caesar salad, and peel & eat shrimp which were all delicious. Especially because it's so hard to find decent seafood in Texas! The decor is adorable and fits that of an old pharmacy (but with the punny "f" instead of "ph" in their name!) and even our salt and pepper shakers resembled pill bottles. They have indoor and outdoor seating, a bar, and a small parking lot that's a decent size for the east side. Overall I highly recommend Hillside Farmacy! Disappointing. A group of us came for brunch and sat outside, where a huge loud fan was blowing on us. They wouldn't turn it off, or even down to a lower speed. I had the eggs and grits plate, which was very basic, and the eggs were too salty. Had to ask twice for salsa, and the waitress acted like it was an odd request and said they had "hot sauce." Finally she brought me some Louisiana-style hot sauce and an unopened bottle of chipotle sauce, and I had to pry off the plastic to get it open. Service was slow, and my finished plate sat there for quite a while with flies buzzing on it. Then I went to the restroom, and after washing my hands, there was nothing to dry them on. I am visiting my daughter and she absolutely loved this place and brought me here for breakfast. I was excited to try. We sat at the bar and ordered. We waited 45 minutes. I asked the sever where our food was and hoped it was not cold. She went into the kitchen and came out with our food. Unfortunately it was ice cold, the bacon not crispy, salad with any dressing, lettuce was wilted and staff was extremely unfriendly. They blame their inadequate level of service and food on the 45 minute wait which did not exist as there were many empty tables. As decent as the food is, this was very much a three-star experience. We had a 12-person reservation for 8pm, and when we get here we are told it was cancelled due to the cold weather-- they didn't even call. After waiting they sat us at several different tables, and by the time we order they tell us that literally like a fourth of the menu is out because of the brunch rush from earlier during the day, so we had limited options. The drinks were expensive and unimpressive, and so far the only things that were worth it were the french fries and the pretty atmosphere. I haven't written a review in a long time, but last night was so disappointing. First, we were service industry so we like to think we know what a good experience in a restaurant is supposed to be and last night was not it. We had started out with drinks and our server had to go check if they had a beer we asked about. They did not. Okay, no problem. Then we go to appetizers and we ask how many shrimp come in an order. Our server has to go check to see, seems like information that should be known. When we tried to order the charcuterie our server had to go check to see if they had it, this is now the third time the server has to go to find out information. They did not have this dish. So we ended up getting the shrimp. They were not deveined and that's kind of gross. There was no wet napkin given with that dish to clean your hands after peeling shrimp. We ordered entrees at the same time as the appetizers and we tried to get the nicoise salad, again the server had to go and see if that dish was available. At this point, just give me a list of things you don't have on the menu because half the things we're trying to order you don't have. We had to wait forever between the coursing of the appetizer and the entrees and by that point, we were starving. So when the food came out the burgers were dry and not medium, more like jerky. The blackened fish was so salty it was inedible. We were able to send it back and get it recooked, the recooking took forever. When it came out again, it wasn't any better. The vegetables with that dish were simply put gross. We were so hungry that we just ate it. We had desserts that were okay, but at that point the mood has been ruined. The kicker of the meal was the included gratuity for 20%. The server did not notify us, it wasn't circled. It was just quietly put there. If you're going to do that, at least notify that you do that or it's on there. Overall, the service was mediocre, the food was worse and the prices for what you get are laughable. Overpriced. There are better places to give your money to. Overall I am sad to see a great place go down the drain. We used to love to come here. read more

Atmosphere: Hip, cute restaurant. Enjoyed sitting in the outdoor area where there was plenty of greenery and fans. Order: ham & parmesan cheese grits: I hated my food. I usually find the positive aspect of every meal, but I genuinely disliked my food. The appearance alone was off putting. I literally with given a giant slab of deli-like ham that had toppings. Something about the flavors did not mix well together, and I left brunch feeling queasy after eating my meal. This place is definitely not somewhere you go for a quick bite.This place offers a unique decor, the interior is delightful and the patio is the place to sit on a sunny day. I loved their vintage pharmacy cupboards & the salt-pepper shakers(like ur tonic bottles). Food wise, things are very simple and done very well. I would say typical American fare that is priced out pretty well. I went in for a to-go ordered and tried their "numba six" sandwich but not worth $12 in my opinion. The service was quick,(at least for me). Loved their old pharmacy look and think its cool. I visited Austin and had a great dinner with friends at Hillside Farmacy. It was quiet due to the remnants of Hurricane Harvey so we easily got a table and received excellent service. We split a few appetizers, a dozen Massachusetts oysters, malt vinegar fries and a pimento cheese dip. They were each great apps, especially to split with a group of friends. They also have a great happy hour until 6pm, including snacks at half off and $2 off their burger. I tried the Italian dip sandwich, which was a huge portion, and really flavorful. The sandwich came piled high with roast beef, tomato tapenade, provolone, and onions. Plus there was au jus sauce on the side for dipping. I really liked the sandwich and was impressed by the size. While we almost didn't have room for dessert, we shared the affogato which came with a delicious local ice cream and certainly was worth getting. Used to love this place and take visiting friends as I was so proud of this GEM. It's seems this place has joined the list of restaurants that has used the Covid pandemic and supply issues to throw service completely out the window. The experience is not friendly or welcoming. Rude staff, I called and asked if I needed to RSVP and the guy on the phone answered with a rude tone "you need to walk in." That's fine, very dry but whatever- no problem. I live in the neighborhood and have alwayswanted to try it. So we walk down there, when we walked in a older woman with short black hair and bangs was very unpleasant for someone who is the first person you see when you walk in. She told us it would be a 40 min wait although there were open tables everywhere, we explained our phone call about no wait so no reservation needed. So naturally we asked about the open seats and we can't sit there because of COVID. (They were perfectly spaced out and no one around) She looked annoyed at this point then aggressively asked "are you going to wait or not?!" Woah Lady, I'm shocked at this point. I'm not one to write reviews or get upset but unbelievable. I felt as if she had some kind of personal vendetta against me, how dare we ask about the open tables and walk in to dine. I just don't know what it is - I rock with the whole farm-to-table concept and support what Hillside did in paying tribute to Doc Young and the pharmacy that was a part of east Austin history. Finally - a birthday rolls around (my boo's!) and I convinced him to have brunch here. He ended up getting the big brekkie plate and I had the fries and the crab cakes. We tried to house punch, mimosa, and iced latte. While I thought the food was solid - I didn't leave feeling blown away. I thought it was just okay. Let me start by saying while I don't recommend this place personally I may stand alone in my opinions. The food was phenomenal! The service and personal touch was completely nonexistent. You order your food off of an app. The pictures and description are lacking for anything that you'd order and wonder what else was in it. Not one person asked us how the food was, didn't pour the water from the carafe that was put on our table. The only interaction we received was when I asked for syrup for the pancakes once I realized none was on the table or given to us. Did we want more coffee? Yes, but again no one asked. What inspired me to pen this review was the delectable, weekday breakfast that I recently experienced. It's hard to find good brunch food on a weekday, but Hillside serves up their until 3! I had the poached egg & kale dished that was so simple, yet perfect. The kale was bright and salty which really hit the spot. The portion was the perfect size, too. I have two problems with hillside farmacy - how long you have to stand around waiting for a table and how boring and simple the menu & food ended up being. Six of us arrived on a Sunday at 11:30am and waited over an hour - they do not take brunch reservations. There is plenty of space to stand around outside and drink while you wait for your table at least, which was nice. However, the mimosas were tiny... soooo small for $4. We finally were seated on the outside patio which was super cute! It was shaded, and decorated with beautiful vines and lights. Nothing on the menu really caught my eye - everything seemed rather basic and uninspiring. I ended up ordering the big brekkie. Everything was perfectly fine - the potatoes were good, the scrambled eggs were light and fluffy, and the bread was fresh and tasty. The bacon was rather greasy and fatty but still, it's bacon, so delicious regardless. For being labeled a big brekkie it really wasn't that big... definitely left feeling like I could eat way more. Anyways, the service was pretty horrible - our server was very disinterested and the drinks, food, and checks all took way too long to come out. Yeah, the food was alright but seriously not worth it. Came here for brunch on a Sunday, the place was packed but we had wait only 30 minutes considering how busy it was. To start with, we got the house punch to share, which is 20 cups and recommended to be shared by ten people. It was really good, highly recommend it. You will definitely leave feeling tipsy if only five people share it. For the entree, I got the Smokey Denmark bangers and eggs, which was delicious. I highly recommend it. My friend got the Mac and Cheese and loved it. Each one of us got different entrees and none of us were disappointed. Everything on the menu is good, except none of us tried the pancakes. Definitely not worth the price, food is just not good. Appetizer came out two minutes before the food and we ended up with a crowed table. Waitress was unaware we were there after she took our order. Another waiter had to refill our water. Update: Thanks for the reply Hillside. We actively avoided the brunch time to have better service, we went at 4pm on Saturday and there were 4 other tables seated. I'm happy to hear the policy is that any waiter will refill the water when they see it is empty, however the waitress sat at the bar talking to coworkers for the majority of our meal. The food not being good is not an issue with the quality of ingredients but rather the flavors of the dishes as a whole. read more

I recently came on a weekday for a late lunch and the restaurant was fairly empty. I was greeted promptly and seated at the bar area. The decor here is incredibly beautiful and the staff are kind and friendly. Their patio area is also pretty and if it weren't so hot outside, I would love to sit on the patio. I came during happy hour and all the small plates were half off. Perfect! I ordered the macaroni and cheese with a poached egg and the farmacy plate. I loved the Mac and cheese and I was surprised at how well the poached egg worked with it. The farmacy plate was good but I didn't like the meat selection they have on there. I also ordered the pickpocket drink (virgin) and it was nice! It's a semi sweet soda that is refreshing for a hot day. Austin is home to many eateries that lean into either a hipster or hippie vibe and can sometimes fall short on the actual quality of the food. Hillside is the rare spot that has it all: excellent ambience--inside and out--great service, and insanely good food. Insanely good. Case in point: scrambled eggs. Scrambled eggs are a breakfast/brunch/eat breakfast food for every meal Leslie Knope staple. No one expects much from scrambled eggs; the assumption is that getting eggs at Waffle House is more or less getting eggs at the Ritz-Carlton. THESE scrambled eggs, however, were the stuff of legend: fluffy, golden, cooked to exactly the right temperature and consistency, and infinitely flavorful. These scrambled eggs were prepared like they were the main course at a five star restaurant on the night that the influential food critic is coming. You could literally taste the love and care that went into this most basic of brunch items. Our table shared a Big Brekkie (source of the aforementioned scrambled eggs), Blueberry Pancakes (perfectenshclag), and that Fried Egg Sandwich. My god, that sandwich. It's enough to make a brother cuss. The flavor combinations that sandwich brought forth were otherworldly. It's the type of entrée that makes people who have gone to a place every Sunday for a year not be able to recommend anything on the menu because they've only ever gotten exactly this one menu item because it's just that good. This was my first time visiting. We dropped by here as a first stop to a foodventure birthday extravaganza. We ended up only ordering 3 small plates to share since we were planning on hitting up 3 different restaurants. We tried out their mac and cheese, crab cakes and brussel sprouts. Brussel sprout were really good. I love that it has enough charred. It was a paired well with their tangy sauce. Crab cakes still has shells bits in them so it dodnt leave a good texture. It is well season and went along well with their small salad. Very pricey though. 2 small crab cakes with greens and pickles for 13$. Mac and cheese was decent. Shell pasta with enough cheese sauce to let it be mac and cheese. Nothing that made me disappointed or wanna tell the world about it. Service was a bit off. Not sure if we were there on a bad day but it was slow. I waited a long time and try to flagged multiple staff down to get out check. It was like noone want to make eye contact or acknowledge me as I wave around my card like crazy.... I mean... other customers did... Beside the hiccup at the end our waitress did drop by a handful of time to make sure everything is ok. I'll probably be here for their brunch or something. Service depends on the server you get for your visit. I've been almost every time I'm in Austin and it varied. I really like their brunch/breakfast menu. I always get the brûléed grapefruit! It's sweet, tart and the bitterness of the grapefruit is eliminated so extremely delicious. This time I had the ham and grits with egg. Presentation and taste was great! We came here for brunch one lovely Saturday. There was a short wait and we were seated outside on the patio. The patio is great when the weather is nice. I love the bar and the ambiance. The service was rather spotty. Glasses were empty. It was just not that efficient. Now if the food is great, I can forgive sub optimal service. However, my fried egg sandwich arrived lukewarm. It must have been sitting under the warmers for some time. The bread had started to get a little soggy. Rather disappointing. The potatoes were also cool and must have been sitting for a while. I loaded them with hot sauce and was able to salvage. The blueberry pancakes were just ok and they too were a little on the cool side. All in all, a sub optimal dining experience. read more
