Himalayan Restaurant is just too busy to be hospitable, which is unfortunate because restaurants aren't just for food but for service as well. We called to get takeout and they told us to come in 45 min. We did, and ended up waiting for another 45 min. While I was there waiting, I saw they way they were treating customers who were being polite and asking for a table.. It felt rude and rushed. I know they're busy, but it felt a little too rude. In regards to the food, I thought it was alright but nothing too special compared to other Indian food i've had. I don't feel I can appropriately comment on any of the fried food given it wasn't fresh, but I was disappointed that it tasted like it was probably sitting around waiting for the rest of our order. The sauce of the Lamb Makhani was unbelievably good, but the quality of the lamb was noticeably poor. It was just so tough. Also it doesn't come with rice so plan to order that separately. We also had the chicken biryani. The chicken was tender and juicy! But the flavor of the dish was just .. okay. Was our food experience possibly not as good because we chose takeout? I don't doubt that. However with other restaurants in the village, I find it hard to believe Himalayan is worth waiting so long for. read more

Wow the food was amazing- the best Indian food I have ever had!! They have several vegan options and one of the waiters was really helpful in letting us know all of the vegan menu items. My dad and I split the samosas, Aaloo Govi (cauliflower potato dish), mushroom mattar, paratha bread, and chapatis bread. Everything was incredible! I loved the chapati! I must mention that the restaurant was absolutely packed the night we dined in. It took a very long time to get seated and over an hour to get our food. I know a lot of other tables were getting frustrated with the wait (as was I), but I imagine that if they weren't so busy, the service would have been a lot better. And it was good but very spicy, I was hungry so I ate some. Also, our prefer was messed up: they forgot about my dish and I was sitting there watching everyone eat. And they brought 2 naans instead of 3, then after we asked them 3 times brought the 3rd one but not what we ordered. Service: very bad. You feel like you are in a race. The waiter is rushing from one table to another screaming and not giving you a chance to order, just interrupting to speed things up. Takeout order was ready quickly. Large portions. Food was just ok. Paratha was dry and flavorless but the naan was good. Samosas were just ok. Tandoori chicken was pretty dry and stringy but the flavor was good. Wife got the lentil soup and really enjoyed it. Probably wouldn't eat here again but I don't regret giving it a try. read more

We came in for lunch. We did not expect such an exceptional dining experience. Since we do not really understand Indian cuisine very well, we chose the "lunch specials". I chose the Chicken Masala, husband chose the Chicken Curry. Both of these come with a delicious lentil soup, stewed vegetables, salad and the naan bread. At $12 for a price point, we got a very healthy and scrumptious lunch sampler! I was astonished at the flavors. Everything seemed very well thought out and pleasantly presented. Our service seemed to be shared with the entire staff, this may change at night once it's busier. Service was prompt and courteous. The dining room seemed quite tidy and clean. Decor was reminiscent of all things Nepal and India. Very interesting. Bathroom was like walking into a FREEZER, I don't know why. Wash water was sub-zero. I will hurry back. This is one of the best restaurants in all of Big Bear! We ordered takeout from here and it was the perfect meal after a day in the snow. We ordered the lamb biryani, chicken mo-mo and lamb vindaloo and all of the food was fantastic. The flavor was spot on and it had the perfect amount of spice (we ordered medium). The food took about 25 mins to prepare after calling and when we picked everything up, everyone was very friendly. I am excited to return! read more

I've been here multiple times over past few years and never had a problem until now. I always sit outside and enjoy a nice meal which may or may not include the Dahl soup, home made Palaak Paneer, samosas, spanich aloo, and any one of the 15 + freshly made Naan breads, apricot Naan being my favorite. Ive had friends who rave about the lamb tandoori, stating its one of the best they've ever had. Interestingly food is not the issue, their unacceptable service is. During my last visit I changed it up and sat inside for the first time. As such my experience could not have been any worse or cringe worthy. The servers on duty could not have cared less about my table or any table for that matter. The jack off who took my order order was absolutely rude, rolled his eyes at me when I asked his opinion on a menu item like I was inconveniencing him, and started to walk away while I was still placing my order. Afterwards he then proceeded walk to the cash register area where he and another male co-worker talked and giggled amongst themselves like little boys who just learned to pee standing up. I saw one of them point to a lady at the table next to mine, spoke in a non-English dialect and continued to laugh even harder. I could instantly tell they were berating her in Public. There was no urgency to get my food to me. When it did come out my feckless server slammed two of the plates on the table and walked away. The food was stone cold like it had been sitting in the window for a while before their lazy asses decided bring it out. Of course he never came back to check up on me or inquire if I needed anything. Completely ruined my afternoon meal. I've been to many places in this world and when a shit show like that is displayed for me I never return again. Came here Labor Day weekend and wow what a mess. This is solely based on the food and not the service. We had made reservations for 730 on Sunday evening but didn't get sat until 830. Restaurant was chaotic and we almost walked out but because of the reviews we decided to stay. We started with the cheese pakuada. Ok amazing... we ordered 2 more orders. About 6 pieces for $5 and the flavor and preparation was phenomenal. Then we ordered a few things to share. Chicken tandoori was delish. 5/5 The chicken vindaloo was amazing. Flavor was phenomenal and the chicken tender and flavorful. Again at 5/5. We tried the mixed grill plate. Wasn't a huge fan. Pieces of lamb and chicken skewer with chicken tandoori as well. The meet was a little overcooked and tough. For the price of $18 it was a decent amount but again just overcooked. 2/5. The marinated lamb shank was delicious. The meat literally just fell off the bone. The curry sauce it came in was on point and delicious. 5/5. Lastly was the lamb chops themselves. I tried to get a little clarification on the pricing because it says $18 for three pieces and on the menu they call it rack of lamb. You get 3 to 4 lamb chops in your order. A little pricey for the amount. But the lamb chops them selves were cooked perfectly and juicy and flavorful. 4/5. read more

The momos came out 30 seconds after ordering. I could tell they were sitting in some kind of warmer. They were chewy and not very good. The chicken chowmein used some weird thin noodles (not the Napalese that I am used to) and wasn't very good. The Aaloo govi was very watery. Overall, I was disappointed in the food. AMAZING! Just went here for dinner after hitting the mountain all day and were looking for something vegetarian and filling. Found this place while scrolling maps and was not disappointed at all! Very clean and friendly staff. Ordered the veg pakauda and Taj Mahal beer - delicious! The chutney sauce that comes with this appetizer was to die for! I seriously wish that I could package it up and take it home with me. Beer was very flavorful but still pleasantly light. For dinner we ordered a small vegetable korma and garlic naan. I will say that the small order is in fact small (very easily split between two people if you aren't looking to get stuffed full). We loved the portion size with the bread versus a side a rice. The food is good considering you're in a mountain town eating ethnic. Would have been a five star, again based on Indian cuisine, if it wasn't for the service. We walked in without any greeting from the four men standing around looking as if they're hating their job and it's an inconvenience a new party walked in so they'll continue to fiddle around on their Toast Tab (portable credit card machine) devices versus saying a simple "Hello". Unfortunately for wait staff service, was reflected in their tip. Ambiance is okay, if they decide to put their chair covers on completely and try to fix their electrical during non business hours would be helpful. Just ate there. Delicious!!! Chicken Tikka Masala for me with moderate spice added and Lamb Saquwa (sp?) for my wife. Added Onion Naan. My Tikka Masala had such rich flavor and just the right spice added. Waiter (very courteous) came to table after entrees arrived asking if any more spice was needed, ready to add more horsepower, but it was perfect. Alright I'm gona try really hard to give a nice review. Lol Because I personally don't care for Indian food much. I'm not sure whyyy. But I always feel like it tases kind of bland or something. It doesn't matter where I go I'm always finding myself saying "why did I come here?" Having thrown out my disclaimer about my personal bias, I gave them 4 stars which I think is a friendly rating considering I don't care for this cultures food much. My friends wanted to eat Indian food and so we did. My friend had her dog with her and they made a big deal about the dog. The dog is super well-behaved and sat under the table and no one even knew she was there. Basically the best dog ever. And the server made a big deal about it and told us no to the dog at first. When we went to walk out another staff member came over and said the dog was okay. Probably because they saw the dog was more behaved than some of the people in the restaurant. Anyway we ordered a ton of food and shared so we could sample different items. All of it was okayyy. Not my cup of tea but it seemed to be made the way it's supposed to. My friend who likes and eats Indian food frequently said it was really good. Note on delivery: I expected a call when they arrived, but the guy tramped up my super steep driveway with a foot of snow on it, up all the icy danger steps, and rang my doorbell like a Sherpa adventurer. If you dine in, the atmosphere is subtly hipster in a good international traveler way. And while waiting on your order, you can visit the giant adjacent Himalayan good emporium. SOOOO much good stuff for great prices. We bought about 20 hand crocheted hats for Christmas gifts, for so inexpensive I felt like I was almost in the Himalyas myself. If you like spicy, make sure to ask for spicy sauce on the side. We ordered hot tikka masala and added extra spicy sauce into it and it's not like we eat ghost peppers or anything like that. It's really good though, so make sure to order it! The garlic naan is great. Get that! read more

My husband and I come here a couple of times a month, we love their Tikka Masalla and Vindaloo. Those are our favorites, but we love everything we've tried. We get chicken. We love the patio and the bar. The bartender is super sweet and makes great drinks, I always get a Manhatten. He's also a very good and attentive server. We always have a great time. The only improvements I'd recommend have to do with the bar. It's a super cool space, but it lacks ambiance. Last few times we've been there, the news channel was on. Most people would prefer some good music and videos or sports instead. Great place though, we love it and will always be back! read more
