Kale Salad Special
Matt J.

Even though Hip Vegan's quality does vary significantly, I always visit when I'm in Ojai, thanks to many happy memories. Their food isn't always locked in, but when they're good they're really good. Luckily, I caught them on a very good day. Coincidentally, I was bemoaning their unchanging menu to my fellow diners as we drove to the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to see a Kale Salad special on the board. The salad delivered on all fronts with apt chemistry between textures and flavors. It really doesn't look like much in the photo, but the mint, dukkah, almond and dressing combined superbly. I hope the kale finds its way onto the permanent menu as I could unthinkingly eat buckets of it. Since the quality at Hip is tough to predict, just think happy thoughts that the kale will make an appearance.

Sooooo gooodddd!! The flavors are out of this world. Loved the khao San, gunpowder fries, izakaya salad! Definitely coming back here. As a lifelong vegetarian and also Asian, they nailed the flavors and went above and beyond with the variety of ingredients.

Caesar salad 5/5

Big thanks to Reylene. She was knowledgeable & super helpful in helping me pick out the right meal. Loved the fresh & perfectly dressed Caesar salad. The burger was unique & protein packed. So much flavor in everything. One of my fav restaurants!

Date Cacao Smoothie... so Creamy and delicious.

Very popular spot in Ojai! We were there last weekend, on Sunday. We arrived soon after they opened. It was perfect timing as the line grew after we placed our order. It was our first time and the cashier was very helpful, and friendly. The food was awesome. My boyfriend and I shared our food because we wanted to taste everything! The restaurant is nice, clean, and hip. We really enjoyed the experience. The outside area is super cute as well.

Banh Mi
Kira L.

i love hip vegan but finally found something on the menu i didn't love ... i'd skip the banh mi sadly. the bread was very dry, bland and hard and honestly just too much of it for the sandwich. felt like i needed some sauce for the dryness. all the fillings came out when you bit into it. the tofu also was not my favorite, kind of mushy. wouldn't recommend out of all the other amazing things on their menu! also i know it's counter service, but i wish there were more supplies to wipe down dirty tables outside

The LITTLE sign to right of door.
Danada M.

Came here with a Vegan friend. EVERYTHING on this menu is vegan. AND if you are not vegan you can safely eat here with a vegan friend. There is NO BIG SIGN to find this place. There is only a small sign to the right of the glass entry door. I ordered the hamburger with the vegan patty and asked for pickles too. IT WAS GREAT! Yes it is not meat, but the patty is delicious! It reminded me more of a GardenBurger patty. I'm sorry I forgot to take pictures because it's beautiful too! We also enjoyed the gunpowder fries. They are a little spicy but delicious. They are served with a mild curry catchup and another dipping sauce. Both were great. They also have regular catchup and mustard for those of us who are traditional. So if you have non vegan friends you'd like to go eat with, this is a great option where I think you and they can eat happily together! If you find this review useful please vote!

Tacos de Papas
Ronda R.

Always delicious Today I had the fried tacos de papa with a bit of jack fruit. Huge amount of food and the salsas were perfect We also split some fries and took home dal soup. Fast service too even when busy. Such a clean restaurant with a calming vibe. We'll be back.

The Old Fashioned burger tasty AF!
Tim C.

The food, as usual is amazing. There isn't a meat-loving burger eater who can honestly say he/she doesn't like this Old Fashioned burger. It tastes amazing and tastes even better knowing no animal was tortured for it.

Elizabeth R.

The food is incredible. I cycled from Ventura to get here, uphill, inhaled this Asian salad which was truly the best thing I ever ate. If I lived here I'd be spending all my money at this establishment.

Jackfruit Burrito & Khao San Noodles
Julian A.

Super yummy! Yes everything is vegan, even the sour cream in the burritos!! Prices aren't outrageous, either, so that's a plus. If you're vegan or doing lent or even want to just eat better & for animals please come check it out.

Dragon smoothie
Nina R.

A must every time I'm in Ojai, even if only for a dragon smoothie as I walk around. You can just taste the freshness and the good-for-you ingredients! Service is friendly. The interior isn't much to look at, but the exterior space more than makes up for it. So green, so lovely, so peaceful, and well appointed, with ample seating.

Tiger bowl
Katie C.

I haven't had much experience with eating vegan dishes but after a meal at Hip Vegan I'd love to incorporate more vegan dishes into my life. I got the Tiger bowl. Visually, it was beautiful and colorful. Tastewise, it was delicious. It was surprisingly filling and kept me quite content until it was time for the next meal. There are indoor and outdoor seating options. I found my experience at Hip Vegan quite peaceful.

Coleslaw. Just cal if coleslaw ..
Sunny S.

I like going to Hip for the vegan food, but their coconut lime in the coconut, which is under entrees, and makes you think it's a rice entree, is just Cole-slaw!! Finding a grain of rice in it, is like looking for a needle in a haystack. So upsetting.

Maybe if you named the raw salad The Epic Salad or The Awesome Salad it would sell WAY better?

I did not eat salad there, but I had the jackfruit burrito with barley and it was delicious. Jackfruit is like barbecued pulled pork.

They do a soft close from 2-5 where they don't serve the food menu but offer drinks, coffee and pastries. We stopped in on the 4th of July and were seated right away. They also have a coffee and pastry counter if you want to grab something to-go. You do not want to miss out on the pastries, and the display sure catches your eye. Along with our main we split a morning bun which was flaky and just the right amount of sweet. As we were walking out I noticed some sandwiches that looked extra tasty as well. We kept it simple and split the Dutchess Breakfast Plate since we had quite a bit of eating planned for the day, but it was more than enough to satiate us alongside the pastry. It comes with these massive, crispy and spiced potatoes, big slabs of Niman Ranch bacon, tomato chutney, thick-cut sourdough toast and two eggs. At $22 this isn't cheap, but the quality is there and I would order this again just for those potatoes. The Burmese Fried Chicken Sando seemed to be the most popular dish and I was jealous as I saw it hitting other tables. I'll just have to come back!

The Farmer and the Cook -- Fresh Finds Off the Main Road…read more I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect walking in for the first time, but The Farmer and the Cook won me over pretty quickly. It's bright, clean, and has this easy organic warmth to it... the kind of place that feels like it was put together by people who actually care. Right off the main road, easy to find, and the family vibes are real. It's the kind of spot you want to linger in. If you're navigating dietary restrictions, this place is a quiet goldmine. Strong gluten free options, a genuinely vegan friendly menu, and plenty of vegetarian choices too... so everyone at the table actually gets to eat something they're excited about. That's rarer than it should be. The food? Solid. I went with the raw tacos, sopes, and huarache; all filling, all fairly priced for the area. The raw tacos especially surprised me... fresh, flavorful, and not in a "I wish this was a real taco" kind of way. These hold their own. Service was quick and most of the staff had a warm, genuine energy about them. The one small snag; the cashier seemed to be having a rough one. A little gruff, made me feel like my first visit was mildly inconvenient for them. It happens, we all have bad days, but first impressions do stick a little. Overall though, I'm absolutely coming back. There's more on that menu calling my name and an atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down for a bit. Whether you're vegan, gluten free, or just looking for something fresh and honest... this one's worth the stop.
