Very high rated place in Ojai. We came here based on recommendation. Even though it should be healthy and presentation looked amazing... Every single dish was over salted to the point that it was not possible to eat. The only thing we liked was lentil soup. Smoothies tasted like banana mixed with powder. No other taste of mango and strawberry. Apparently during our meal they closed for brake. No one notified us if we need anything else like napkins, to go box, or use of facilities. Amazing! Such a great meal after hiking. Had the soup of the day which was a Greek Lentil, with a perfect amount of kick with a bean base. Got the Canteen bowl, Lovedddd the falafel crispy on the outside and soft on the inside & the double chocolate chip cookie, they had other interesting flavors but decided to go with this one and it was thick and soft. I genuinely dislike writing negative reviews (and this is my first one) but this place is just an over priced, trendy vegan organic restaurant ( I am by no means a vegan hater, I myself was vegan for 6 years until recently). The Caesar Salad was really plain, didn't come with any ranch or dressing, the Tiger Bowl was actually good (no negative comments there), the bahn mi, that I ordered was the most expensive Bahn Mi I've ever had, and I had three amazing and cheaper bahn mi's from genuine Vietnamese restaurants in Ventura that week. The GunPowder fries could've been great but they were just unbearably salty. The ambiance was okay, no issues there, but my table was also dirty so that wasn't good. Honestly I wouldn't have minded how mediocre the food was, except that we waited about 30-40 minutes for our food, which is mostly just leaves and vegetables. I had ordered when the restaurant wasn't too busy, but soon after I ordered there was a really long line, and I can't even imagine how long those people waited. I would like to say, maybe I caught them on a bad day, or maybe only my experience was this negative but I wouldn't recommend wasting your time or money here, it's really just a gentrified restaurant serving mediocre asian style foods. read more

I traveled 30 miles to The Hip Vegan because I wanted to take a scenic drive to Ojai and try something different. This place gave me both. The Canteen Bowl I order was spicy, warm, and satisfying. The falafel was fried a bit too long causing it to be excessively crunchy yet the taste made up for it. The spicy rice was just a tad firmer than what I prefer, but overall hit the mark on flavor. I'm usually not a fan of tempeh mixture burgers. But Hip Vegans original burger is one of the best burgers I've ever had! The texture was spot on. Was disappointed with the smoothies, they had absolutely no taste to them. Ordered a side of fries that nobody ended up not eating and got tossed because they were way over salted. Next time i'll just skip on the smoothies, which is a bummer because my family and I are big on juices/smoothies. The wagamamma bowl was delicious! Worth the drive!! My sister and I discovered thus place years ago, after playing golf at Soule Park. It was at their old location, where they had this little sign that pointed to "Vegan Food". We decided "why not?" and have been making the hour drive since. We actually have cravings for Hip Vegan! This trip i went with their Specials, Crispy Tofu Sando and Fried Rice Balls, while my sister will not stray from her cravings for their Spring Rolls and Gunpowder Fries. All great selections, and the sauces served with the fries and rice balls...yum! I was visiting Ojai last weekend for my girlfriend's birthday and Lo was so helpful. It was our first time at a vegan spot but per good reviews wanted to check it out. Lo was approachable and able to answer all our questions. For a restaurant that doesn't do full service, I was beyond impressed by the customer service we received. I wanna give a heads up to anybody who might have nut allergies! Please check with them if you are allergic to nuts specially cashews. We specifically picked items that didn't have cashews on the menu, but when we got them they both had cashews in the dressing and cheese. I was so surprised because their menu didn't mention it as an ingredient. We had to pick something else to eat and it didn't taste good at all. It tasted like ocean water tofu! The new item was $1 more and they made us pay that $1! Even though it was their fault that we had to pick another item!!! So so disappointed in this place and do not recommend it. I think it's just common decency to have a true and real ingredient list on the menu, specially when it comes to nuts since nut allergies are a common thing. read more

I've had smoothies from many different health food stores and smoothie bars over the years, and I make my own often...so I have plenty to compare them with. I am not a vegan or vegetarian. My Ojai-local friend, also not a vegan, heard great things about Hip Vgn so we decided to try it. Located off of a side street, Montgomery, across from a school and adjacent to the downtown area is Hip Vgn. It's easy to overlook as there is one small name sign. You'll spot the white walls and dark umbrellas out front. I ordered the fried tempeh-based veggie burger option because the regular has thousand island dressing and that is not for me. My burger was covered in a delicious peanut sauce! I don't think you can go wrong with the combination of fried deliciousness and peanut sauce. The burger was delicious! It's served with a small side of pickled veggies (like turnips, I think) which also wasn't for me. For $3, you can have housemade cucumber. It's pretty good. Not sure it's worth the money unless you also love the additional pickled turnips that accompany it. My friend's burger had "cheese" on it and she let me try it. Have to give credit where credit is due. The cheese tastes real. I would definitely come back here for the burger. It has unique flavors. They do have a small selection of beers, including aptly named Arrogant Bastard. I opted for their iced green tea brewed in house. Soooooo....I was so pumped to find this place (dairy allergy and all) and after waiting in a super short line with a ling wait time I arrived with a smile on my face excited to order ny old fashioned burger. Only one problem, I also have a sugar allergy which at most alternative food shops is not a bfd. Here it was. The server was nice and helpful in trying to find out for me and though she was the only person working the floor and register (with a smile) I was not okay with how in the middle of my order she answers the phone and takes a long to go order (after asking me if she could checkout someone who just walked in behind me)- I think that's just understaffing, she was great and I would come back if that was all... In the open kitchen in the back, not far from where I am one of the cooks (woman) kept making loud sarcastic comments about my sugar allergy. We stumbled upon this fantastic healthy restaurant today! Clean and airy with air conditioning inside! This is not a full service restaurant, but rather a restaurant where you select your food and drink at the counter, pay and find a table. There are several tables inside, but we chose to sit outside in the patio. My husband is not a fan of vegetables or healthy stuff, but enjoyed his Baguette and Gunpowder fries which comes with their homemade curry ketchup and a tasty mustard! He said his baguette was flavorful and spicy good! The fries were spicy and the dipping sauces devine, although the fries are stand alone tasty. He said he would come back to Hip Vegan again! I ordered the Wagamama Bowl which was heavenly to my tummy! I love all the Asian flavors in this bowl. The portion size of this bowl is generous and I could of had it all, but decided to pace myself and take some home for dinner later tonight. I definitely recommend the wagamama bowl! I also ordered one of the seasonal fruit sodas. I chose the watermelon lime juice mixed with soda. My husband had a beer on tap. After finishing our meal, we bussed our plates and trash. The peanut sauce was delicious, but I would've liked a sweet and sour sauce added to the dipping sauce. The torta: 4 stars The jackfruit was made very well. I typically dislike jackfruit substitutes because it usually has a sour aftertaste. However, this did not! It reminded me of eggplant, and I'm a huge eggplant fan.
