On Saturday night my group and I were getting drinks on their roof top. The server was unquestionably rude to everyone. But as a black female I felt like I was taking on more than my fair share of rudeness. She insisted on giving me a receipt after each drink I ordered. No one else at the table was given the same treatment. Her rational was that "I was the last person to get there so I must want to leave first". I told her that it was It okay I wasn't in a rush but she still proceeded to do it. I cant say for sure if this was a racist act but I was being singled out for one reason or another. read more

The best thing about this place is the rooftop- you can't really hate on a place too much with a rooftop...but maybe they crutch on that too much? It's an Ale House which is cool but they also serve brunch and honestly we don't think they are prepared for that. The service is VERY spotty. It takes forever just to get your drinks and then the food takes extra long. It's a fun place to chill but you need to have a patient mindset when coming here otherwise you'll be irritated. They do a great lunch special burger, fries and beer for $6 which is a good deal. Our main complaint is that the service is very lacking. read more

Historians is probably my favorite bar in Denver. Chris, the bar manager, is the kind of guy people revisit bars to see. The chicken strips and fries are also some of the best in Denver; a hard feat to achieve. The drinks are affordable and it has at least three different atmospheres all in one bar. It is also smack in the middle of South Broadway. Making it the perfect start or end to your night of bar hopping. I highly recommend spending your money here. read more

I understand that everyone is a little on edge, given the current state of the world that we're living in. However, I've never been treated with such disrespect as I was when I was trying to dine and drink there last Friday. Your door man is a social guy, sure, but he lacks table side manners and common courtesy. We asked him what the wait time would be and he said, verbatim, "I don't fucking know man it's the first warm day of the season you tell me." We were a little shocked but we didn't think much of it. So we put our name in. Two hours later, we didn't get a text. So we decided to just go in and see the situation. We walked inside, to the surly, "I hate everyone" door guy, and he was nothing but hostile. We kindly asked him if we were up on the list and he "politely" told me he texted me and because I "didn't respond" my table was up. I was shocked. I even turned my phone on loud just so I would make sure I wouldn't miss a message. Instead of being greeted with hospitality and kindness, my boyfriend was physically SHOVED out of the bar. Again, we love Historians. It makes us honestly feel ill that we were treated with such disrespect. For starters I need to let you know: cute atmosphere, and an upstairs patio! This used to be my secret runaway spot from downtown, but it seems as though everyone got the message (it was only a matter of time). They have a great selection of local beer, as expected from the name and the service is consistently mediocre at best. Why they get 4 stars: their lunch specials! The fries come ON the sandwiches (at first I was extremely weary, and then you dig in.. your life is changed) and they come wrapped like a super cute package with brown paper and a string! Everything else they serve there is fabulous as well, minus anything blackened. I had blackened salmon on a salad here once and it was so overpowering that I couldn't eat the fish nor the parts of the salad that touched the fish. Dear Historians, do you ever read your customer's reviews? If so do you actually care that SO many people consistently complain about the poor service at your establishment? I agree completely agree with reviewer Lauren D. Rachel who works the upper deck is so rude and inattentive. If I have her as a server next time I'm back I will literally turn around and walk out the door! The 1st time I thought it was just me. I tried being super nice hoping she'd loosen up. Not! By the 3rd time experiencing little Miss Sour Puss, I realized it's not me...it's definitely her. And it's not just her. The service overall is totally spotty. A co-worker suggested the Historians Ale House for lunch, and 5 of us decided to give it a try. I am glad we did! The Historians Ale House is your normal bar, with good food and good service. The interior is large, with a tall ceiling, dark colors, and wood floors. There are approximately 6 booths , two large (but narrow) community tables, and a large bar that has to seat at least 20 people. This is only the first floor! There is a roof top patio, which overlooks Broadway, a nice view. There are tables and a smaller bar up on top. According to the "maximum capacity" signs that are required in all restaurants, the rooftop area can hold 43 people, and the main floor area can hold 128 people, very nice. Granted, we were there at lunch, but I have the feeling that if the place were full (like in the evenings), I don't think it would feel crowded. The Happy Hour (and please check their website or their menu) has a bunch of good items. I had the cheeseburger and fries, which was only $5.95. 4 of the 5 of us had the cheeseburger, and everyone agreed that it was a good hamburger. Oh, the hamburgers are brought to you wrapped in brown paper and tied with strings. What you ordered is written on the wrapper. When you open up the package the hamburger and fries are inside. Nice touch, no overhead of washing those dishes either. Cool! Service was very good. The waitress took our order, without writing anything down, and she never missed a beat. When we were presented with our individual checks, those were correct too. Parking - on the street at metered parking. The beer offerings is quite large, actually very large. The listing is the size of a regular menu, with the listing on both sides. The beers are broken up into sections, like IPA, Stouts, etc. By each name of the beer, there is also the beer's business logo. The Historians Ale House pays attention to details. Nice touch. My cousin, our friend and I popped into Historians for brunch and mimosas. We decided to go all the way upstairs to the outdoor patio, but I have to first say that I was greeted when I entered and felt very welcome despite it being pretty empty. A+! Upstairs we were promptly greeted and taken care of by our awesome bartender/server who quickly got some bottomless mimosas to the table! He was very very helpful in decision making and was generally an awesome server. I ordered their breakfast burrito (made veggie), Kim did a BYO burger and my cousin got the Spanish hangover, upon the servers suggestion. Forewarning, these are HUGE servings! My burrito was literally like 2 pounds. You should have leftovers or plan to split. Anyway, everything tastes wonderful and my cousin especially enjoyed the Spanish hangover. A once decent bar that used to play good bar music downstairs, but will not only bust you up with hip-hop or club on the patio on the roof, (off format for this type of bar), this problem has leaked downstairs. Would be much better if we could have a chill atmosphere on top and bottom. They seem to have an okay calendar of specials, and so far the crew who work there are mostly not bad (one dude sounds like Frank Rizzo of the Jerky Boys, and a new "bar tender" believes it's all good to treat regular customers like dirt before they can sit down, even resisting the opportunity to wipe down a wet bar segment). They won't keep their posted hours: a big red flag when you plan according to their schedule: closing hours are closing hours, not suggested up- till times where they have an option to randomly close. Their competition generally doesn't yank our chains, and neither should Historians. How hard is this to do? In gaslighting my concern, the shift manager offered the excuse that the bar was "full," when it was at most a third full (and bar length itself was not close to capacity--but new (entitled) "bartender" asserted being "busy" as excuse for getting mad at me for my super-politely asking a wet area at the bar be wiped down. This started as a 5 star review months ago, that became a 2 star review, that now deserves to be down to 1. If you go to this place, good luck! read more

We may have caught them at a weird time on Sunday but felt the service was disengaged. Draft beers and fried pickles were good but they didn't bring napkins or check up on us. The rooftop was nice but a little cold for spring. The inside is really charming and prices are decent too. read more

I'm allergic to Canola Oil and Soybean Oil and called to see what I could order without them and they said those oils are in EVERYTHING and those are the ONLY oils they have. No butter, no olive oil etc... Either they don't care to accommodate any dietary restrictions or these oils are truly in everything which is concerning because even if you're not allergic to them like I am they're almost always genetically modified oils and in my opinion unhealthy for anyone to eat at any time. read more

My husband I wandered in here at the suggestion of a friend. The beer selection is awesome, as are the prices and ambiance. The food left much to be desired and I like pub grub. Our chicken tenders looked like enormous fried oysters, aka burned. The cheese curds tasted like old oil too. I came here yesterday for a friend's birthday brunch. We had a large party and took up out of the lower part of the patio. The service was attentive, the mimosas were good, and I don't think I was ever without a drink. This is only good however, when you have food, and the food took forever! It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special My biggest complaint about this place, is it is NOT accessible if you want to be on the patio. My fiancé is a wheelchair user, and if he had been with me, we would have been out of luck. Not only do they not have an elevator but there are probably five flights of stairs to get to the roof (and then more for the different levels. My friend's elderly mother had a walker and it took 3 people to assist her to where we would be sitting. Of course the only bathroom is downstairs, so if you break the seal, be prepared to get your steps in for the day. For this reason, it's not likely we will return. There are lots of other brunch places, closer to us, that have rooftop patios, and strive to create a safe, equal dining experience for all customers. read more

Nice addition to Broadway. They did a great job on the space and even built out a nice rooftop deck. They have a big beer list (see photo) and the food was very good. I had the Cajun chicken sandwich which was season perfectly and juicy. Their beer list includes colorado brewers such as, Avery, Oskar Blues, Odell, Great Divide, Ska, Left Hand, Bristol, Upslope, New Belgium and Prost. Wasn't crazy about Goose Island IPA...nor was anyone else in our party. I didn't realize till after it is one of Anheuser-Busch's beers, but that explains it. If I was running HAH, I'd ditch all the Goose Island crap and replace it with another craft line...Stone Brewing, etc. Also, I'd add a couple of super hoppy IPAs (Avery Maharaja). read more

Date of Visit: 5/31/14 Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon to meet with some friends. The rooftop was a bit cramped, but offered nice views and a lot of seating. The menu is pretty simple, but everyone at our table liked their orders, so it appears they do simple well. We enjoyed various draft beers as well as the Double Layered Prime Rib Nachos, which were very tasty. The draft beer selection was quite impressive and decently priced. They offer a ton of local CO beers, as well as some unique West Coast brews. The happy hour deal ($2.50 drafts) is hard to beat as well. Overall a solid draft house with solid bar eats. read more

Update: Still not sure I'd give it the extra star, but after coming back here three or four times since my first review, i have not been dissappointed - which seems a bit surprising given many other reviews say it's hit or miss. The waitress (i think Jonni) said she was new, but was great. Little things that made her newness come through were more than made up for by her personability and excellent service. Side note: they still seem to be figuring out their pricing on some things, but they've done away with the $25 pint of Matilda. Good move there. Go with the brewery of the month at $2.50 for 10 oz and you can usually have some pretty darn good beer at a reasonable price. read more

I like this place for it's variety of beer and I think the rooftop patio is awesome! I have never been impressed by the food the many times I have tried it. It's just sort of bland, so many better places to eat in this area. They have a bunch of tv's for watching sports and sometimes have fun events going on! They always have a wide selection of beers that change often and the bartenders seem to know what they are talking about. The rooftop patio is great on warmer days and even better if you are able to go at an off time(not on a Friday for happy hour) and have the place mostly to yourself. There is also a full service bar up there so you don't have to make the trek back down to order more drinks. Service is so-so. I feel like it's better if you sit at one of the bars as opposed to a table. read more

I was at a Meetup event this past Monday, on the rooftop. The space was reserved, so we weren't mingling with other patrons. I liked the layout - enclosed bar space with plenty of seats with roll up doors opening onto a long outdoor patio that can accommodate a large group of people. I had a great time, and took advantage of the heaters they had outdoors while it was still daylight. The event started during Happy Hour, and there were some great options. I went with the hibiscus cider, my friend went with a red wine. I had already eaten, but she got a couple of street tacos, which smelled delicious. As the evening wore on, most of the group had crowded around the bar (which also has heat lamps above). We all had a reddish glow cast onto us . Looking for a casual, fun rooftop bar or a Saturday day drinking spot- this is your place. Nothing fancy here but when it comes to rooftops and good drinks, it doesn't need to be fancy. We walk here quite often in the summers for happy hour after work or to enjoy a cold one on the weekends. The service is great considering the waiters and waitresses are usually dealing with hundreds of drunk, yelling people haha. Great beer selection. Pretty good margaritas. Awesome rooftop. I enjoy the extensive local beer list, high ceilings, and gorgeous rooftop here at Historians. They have happy hour till 7 every weekday, including Fridays! Check out their daily food happy hour specials as well for a great deal. Their burgers come wrapped up in a package, which is weird - hello grease stains! Service is unpredictable - sometimes you get great table service and sometimes you are left alone so long that you make your way to the bar. Either way this place is an affordable place with good bar food and a nice atmosphere, and is totally a recomendable place to visit on Broadway. read more

I have visited this place one other time and the rooftop is great. Food isn't bad. Had some of their tacos and pulled pork previous time. This last time I sat at the upstairs bar. The only issue I had was with the bartender scrapping food off plate in front of me while I'm eating. And then he's serving me another beer without washing his hands. Huge health issue and violation. Just meh. I've never had a downright horrible experience here but my visits haven't been wonderful either. The staff never seems overly welcoming or enthused. I've never tried the food because it's all overpriced and doesn't sound very appetizing. The main things going for this place seem to be their patio and beer list, which doesn't even really distinguish them because many, many other places in Denver are similar. When I visited last, I walked up to the roof while my companion was in the restroom in hopes of finding seating, as there was none available downstairs. I approached a table that a waitress was cleaning off. She saw me standing there with the two beers and barked at me, "You can't sit up here unless you've closed out your tab!" I answered that we had, and that there wasn't anywhere available downstairs. After she cleaned off the table, we were able to snag it and she didn't continue to be rude to us, but the whole interaction just left a bad taste in my mouth. There's no sign indicating the "must close out tab before entering rooftop patio" policy and I hadn't been apprised of it on previous visits, so the sudden insistence seemed strange. I also did not like being snapped at after we had spent money on two drinks; that's just no way to talk to paying customers. Perhaps they should rope off the patio and ask that customers show receipts to gain entrance to the area if it's that important to them. read more

They have really good drink and food specials, The selection of draft beer is I think the most extensive in a one mile radius. Beer prices may be a little higher than other bars in the area at non happy hour times. At happy hour they can be had for a dollar off the 10 oz pours. The lunch burger special is under 6$ and includes a burger house made fries and any 10 oz beer on the menu. Friday is my favorite with a fish and chips deal for under 8$ and you get a beer. Super cool retro victorian atmosphere. Great beer menu. Great brunch menu. Service was professional and attentive. Prices were on the low end. Yeah! We enjoyed to small/medium/large pour options for ordering drafts. The brunch menu had amazing sounding food. We ordered the Spanish Hangover and it was scrumptious. They had no problem switching out sides for us. Fresh fruit! Huzzah! Why not 5 stars? The tables are small and really, really close together AND there are thin standing-room-only bars crammed down the center aisle (in between the dining tables and the actual bar) so walking through the restaurant is impossible. Also, you have no privacy. So, if you love eavesdropping, this place is for you. If you hate loud talkers, it is not. Since it has been raining for weeks here (!!!) we could not check out the rooftop patio. I am assuming that area is less claustrophobic, but can't verify. While we enjoyed our brunch, I'm not sure I would go back when it is busy. Maybe a lazy afternoon in between meals. read more

I love that I can walk out my door and be here in 3 minutes. I met a friend last week on the rooftop and soaked in the sun before it disappeared and enjoyed happy hour drink prices. Almost all the beers are $2.50 and a few $4. They also have tons of HH apps and it was $1 taco night (Thursday). We got a few and for a buck they were ok. I have been here once before on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a chicken sandwich. One of our favorite go-tos. It's basic bar food with lots of fried stuff (including pickles, yum!) and a good brunch menu. Probably one of the best burger lunch deals in town too. The rooftop patio is a great place to grab drinks with friends or enjoy some hangover curing chicken tenders. Service can be hot or miss. It definitely gets busy on the weekends or anytime a game is on so keep that in mind when you're trying to decide what time you want to grab a table. read more

I like historians a lot. I wish it was open when I lived a block away, I'd be here more often. The downside is parking which is a little hard to find on Friday/ Saturday nights. Now with the positive, the staff is super chill and friendly and knowledgeable about all of the beer on tap and then the beer. There's a lot of choices, you can't go wrong and with the 3 different pour sizes you can really try anything and not feel bad. With a large selection of craft beers on draft, Historians Ale House is a good spot to meet up with friends who are beer snobs for a round of tastings. Mondays are a fun day to go, because not only do they offer their happy hour all day long, there is also a fun pub trivia night that starts at 8pm. My only gripe would be that the seating is close quarters and everything is flat, hard wood in one form or another - stools, benches, etc. Claustrophobic types might not dig this place due to it's tight feel when they get busy. read more
