On my list of approved places to return to. There was a long line on a Saturday evening/ afternoon, as expected, but it moved pretty quickly and was worth the wait. The seafood and sushi was fresh and delicious; dont forget crab legs. Kalbi ribs, the beef bone, and cold oysters were my delicious favs. Foods were refilled quickly and the buffet "line" for food wasn't crowded as I had expected from the line outside. Easily the best Asian AYCE buffet in the greater Portland metro area! All of their hot dishes were fresh, well seasoned and tasty (including their sushi/sashimi which I normally avoid at a buffet)! Closest comparison would be to Makoto Japanese Buffet in Vancouver but Hiyaku buffet definitely has better hot dishes. Restaurant is fully remodeled and immaculate. The restaurant was very full in their opening night but the service was fine. The thick salmon was not seasoned but I may have missed the sauces at the end. The soups were cold. Miso & Egg Drop could have been excellent on a cold night in December. A newer pan-Asian buffet offering all the expected staples with a mess hall atmosphere, friendly service and overall decent quality. Have been on several occasions now--weekend dinner, weekday dinner and for lunch. Prices are around $21 for lunch and $30 for dinner. Nothing revolutionary as far as the sushi offerings here--all solidly made. Sashimi served at night but gets nabbed quickly. Hot foods serviceable as well--pretty quick turnover so reasonably fresh. Gets very crowded, so come during off peak hours or you will literally be rubbing elbows with lots of people at the buffet and in the dining room. After months of waiting for this place to open, we were genuinely excited to try it. The restaurant itself is enormous--easily seating hundreds of people--and it's clear that a lot of money has been invested. The location is great, and the service was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food was a huge disappointment. Everything we tried was very poor. The Mongolian beef was essentially inedible--the meat was undercooked and unpleasant. My wife tried the hot and sour soup, which is a very basic dish, and it was also not edible. The sweet and sour items were equally bad, and even the desserts fell far below expectations. I don't mind paying more for quality food, especially at a brand-new restaurant that clearly invested millions into the space, but the food quality simply did not match the scale or ambition of this place. I truly wanted this restaurant to succeed, but based on our experience, I cannot recommend it. I was recommended to go here by family members who raved about the place. The wait line was long if you didn't place a reservation beforehand. It wasn't very spacious and the seats were packed tight together, making it hard to move around without bumping into other people. The food was subpar. They had a big selection of sushi and seafood but the tuna tasted weird, almost like it just fell apart and very fishy. The desserts all taste the same and was also warm to the touch. One major complain I have is that there were flies around the restaurant and one even landed on the dessert, GROSS. I'm pretty sure it is because they keep their doors open. The steak, giant beef ribs, and giant stir fry chinese veggie was probably the best out of all the food they had to offer. Overall, tastes mediocre with sanitation issues, wouldn't eat here again or recommend to others especially since the price is $30 per person. read more

The place was bright and clean, even the restrooms. The water tasted good (not that "tap" weird taste as other places). The sushi selection was amazing!! So many to choose from and tasted great. My entire plate was just sushi to start. Tempura wasn't greasy. My toddler gobbled up the fish tempura. The price was very reasonable, about $20 for lunch, $30 for dinner for adults. i live near Hiyaku. when it finally opened, i drove past it almost everyday seeing the jam-packed parking lot and people lined up out the door for several weeks (and sometimes still). perhaps it's my bias against buffets, but i wondered to myself, "what could a buffet have to offer that keeps bringing these crowds?" my partner and i finally had the opportunity to try it for ourselves at a "slow" (but still pretty busy) time. truthfully, i found it to be like pretty much any other Asian buffet, but a little bigger and more crowded. we sampled many different foods, and the flavor ranged from so-so to pretty tasty. the katsu chicken, in particular, was very popular (and rightfully so). being crab season, i was hoping to see some crab legs, but there were none to be found at lunch time (even though they are pictured and advertised in various places). i was excited to find steamed clams, but they were somewhat lacking in flavor. they have a sushi buffet (sample at your own risk), but they also have many other standard Asian dishes you'd expect to see (fried rice, lo mein noodles, broccoli chicken, etc.). for sushi, i stuck to mostly California rolls, but i grabbed a few raw fish items when they were freshly prepared, like Hamachi nigiri. i probably would have tried more rolls, but the signs above the sushi rolls telling you what the rolls were and what was in them were incorrectly placed. on that note, this issue seemed pervasive. on the hot food buffet, pork dishes were mislabeled as chicken, and chicken dishes were mislabeled as pork. many people don't eat pork for religious reasons, so i found this troubling. for those who care about COVID-19, influenza, and RSV prevention, you might find that difficult here. in the dining area, the tables are squeezed so close together, you are practically sitting on your neighbor's lap. it's very open and communal with no significant separation or privacy. they also have a real issue ensuring the cleanliness of their dishes--definitely examine your plates before loading them up with food. i found myself looking through several plates before finding one without any crusty food residue. for promoting itself a "Japanese" buffet leading up to opening, i'd consider it to be more Asian Fusion based on the variety of foods available. while i did find a few foods i enjoyed, most of the food was decidedly mid. i didn't find enough to have me enthusiastically coming back for more. read more

We went here for my son's 15th birthday party on a Saturday not long after the grand opening. We had a party of 7 and were seated promptly. Our server although very busy got our drinks and explained how everything worked at the buffet. Do not come on a holiday. They ran out of crab earlier in the day & didn't tell anyone. I was told by multiple people "it will be out soon" it never came out after 35 mins of waiting. I only came for the crab legs . I didnt eat anything from the buffet but my family did . They charged me $27 for not eating & when I complained they only gave me 20% off. So I paid $22 to sit and watch my family eat. They should let people know when they have run out of one of the mains . We wouldn't have ate here if we knew that. Our family of 5 came here to try on a Sunday at 3:30pm. Our tall Chinese waiter with stud earrings was so sweet and the service from him was great! As a self proclaimed sea otter the seafood was amazing! We used to go to Mizumi buffet and Kumi buffet but it doesn't compare to the ambiance, cleanliness, price and food quality of this place!
