    Fried whole chicken
    Grace L.

My brother heard about this place from Instagram, so we decided to try it out! It's located all the way at the back of the supermarket, and it's a very quaint but cute shop! The place is also cash-only. A sweet older lady took our order which was the fried whole chicken ($20) and 2 Korean fish-shaped red bean pancakes ($2 each). Total came out to exactly $24, so prices are reasonable! She told us our order would be ready in 20 minutes, so after waiting, we promptly got it. Our order also came with pickled radish and a spicy sauce. At first glance, the chicken looked amazing: perfectly golden and crispy. However, when we ate it, my brother and I thought it was okay. Flavor-wise, it is very simple, just salt, pepper, and maybe some garlic powder. Some parts of the chicken were perfectly salted while others were bland. Chicken was tender. It wasn't juicy, but not dry either. However, we both agreed the skin was the highlight. It was perfectly crispy with a good salty flavor. Pickled radish was good, but I thought the spicy sauce was just okay. I like sweeter sauces, and the spicy sauce was more on the salty side. As for red bean pancakes, they were warm and tasty! The outer edges had a nice crisp while the inside was more chewy. I liked that the batter wasn't doughy, and the red bean filling tasted homemade and was not too sweet. Overall, I do appreciate the affordable prices of this shop, but the food was just alright. I think this place was nice to try for the first time, but we wouldn't visit again.

Fresh and piping hot seven piece for $11

The chicken is Fresh and piping hot, light and crispy. The sauce is traditional and spite, hot and spicy Korean. The daikon pickled radish is refreshing and traditional contrast of sweet and refreshing.

Tucked away inside HK Market, this little spot is another hole-in-the-wall hidden gem. It's a must-stop whenever we're in LA for the boong-uh-bbang (taiyaki). Hands down the best--especially when it's fresh and piping hot. The ladies who run the place are super sweet and hardworking. If the boong-uh-bbang isn't fresh, they'll often toss in a few extras. Even when it's been sitting out a bit, it still beats any other place. The batter and red bean filling taste homemade, with no artificial aftertaste. My kids also love the chicken wings, which come with hot sauce and pickled radish. Crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. Cash only.

Fish-shaped waffles. Wasn't fresh, not good.

HK Chicken is located in the back of HK Market. It's CASH ONLY ! There are only 3 things on the menu: Fried Chicken (wings/whole chicken), fish shaped waffle with red-bean filling, and roasted sweet potatoes. Simple offerings made by a grandma owner. She is extremely nice and does chicken right! The fried chicken here reminds me of a Thai version of fried chicken made with Gogi-brand batter. If you know then you know. I personally love it because it reminds me of home cooking fried chicken from my aunt. Fried chicken order comes with pickled daikon radish and a spicy sweet sauce; it's yummy! My family loves the chicken from here. Prices are reasonable.

    Bungeoppang with red bean filling

This small eatery inside HK Market sells bungeoppang (Korean fish bread) with red bean filling, baked goguma (sweet potato), and chicken wings. I've only had the bungeoppang ($1.50 each) and goguma ($3 or $5 options). I've always had the bungeoppang made fresh so it's piping hot and still crunchy around the edges. It's really satisfying and delicious - reminds me of the ones we'd get in Korea during our winter visits. These are traditionally made unlike the ones that are made with tapioca flour (for ex. Somi Somi or the little taiyaki stand in little Tokyo) which make it more chewy. These are more of a bready/pancake-like texture and therefore softer. They only offer red bean as a filling and are super generous with the amounts inside. Goguma is also very tasty and good value for the price. The one I purchased was the $5 tray and it came with 4 large gogumas. FYI everything is cash only! Ladies are always super pleasant and friendly. Would highly recommend!

Omgggg HOW have I not tried this place before?!?!!!! One rainy weekend, after binge-watching "Reply 1988" on Netflix and being enticed by the boonguhbbang (Korean taiyaki / fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean paste... boonguh = fish, bbang = bread) featured throughout the series, I succumbed and decided to get some rainy day treats for the family... And WOW, this might be the best boonguhbbang I've ever had. Forget the modern versions at overly expensive cafes and dessert places... THIS is the real deal made the traditional way! It even has my Korean parents' stamps of approval. So piping hot (I asked for a fresh batch and not the ready-made ones sitting under the heat lamp) that I almost burned my tongue downing one as soon as I got in the car and ripped my mask off! $10 for 7 boonguhbbangs, cash only. Can't wait to try the Korean fried chicken from here next, which I've heard is legendary as well. Support local!

HK Chicken serves Korean fried chicken to-go, and it's delicious and hits the spot. I ordered 20 pieces of chicken for $20 to share with friends, and the chicken comes with 2 containers of radishes and 2 containers of hot sauce. Pros: -It's in the back of the HK market, so you can grab drinks and other food items while you're waiting -Even though I don't speak Korean, the ladies working there are so nice and helped me with everything -Do yourself a favor while waiting, grab a taiyaki from them. It's $1.25 and full of delicious goodness -You can order on the phone, and they'll have it ready when you come. If not, the wait is only ~10 minutes. Cons: -If you're looking marinated Korean fried chicken, this is probably not the place for you. -Cash only

Both were very good and tasty especially since it was a very hot day. It was too much food for two people so we took it home. As for side dishes, personally I'm not a fan of pickled things so if you love it then it would be great for you. Service: We were able to take our order while waiting in line so once we actually got seated it felt like it didn't take long to actually eat the food. They were quick and accommodating to requests made. Ambiance: It was nice with music playing while eating. Comfortable dining experience. Parking: It was on a lot that only has valet parking which was $5 cash only. You can do street parking but hard to find since it's downtown area.

The kalguksu portions are especially big, and their side dishes are always great. The restaurant is clean, service is fast, and I love the free rice they give you at the beginning with soybean paste on top. Definitely one of my favorite Korean spots in LA.

The scallop pancake has such an amazing crunch, and paired so well with the slightly sweet and rich mentaiko sauce. My favorite bite was hands down the uni bibimbap. It was so rich and decadent and the sweet shrimp mixed with the creamy uni was an absolute textural dream. I'm devastated it took me this long to try Danbi. I am very pleasantly surprised. We got to try a couple of things. The first thing we ate was their corn cheese roll. The waiter said this is new to the menu and I hope it stays. If you are a fan of Korean cheese corn, you are going to love this. It's corn and cheese wrapped up in an egg roll like wrapper. It was a great starter. Next, we got the endive salad! This salad was beautiful and fresh! Everything you want in a salad and more. I love the sweet corn in this salad too. Every ingredient balance each other so well. We also got the scallop pancake. This was the dish I always wanted to try here but after eating it, it felt a bit heavy compare to the other dishes. It was okay but the other dishes shined more. Lastly, we got the pork jowl, my favorite of the night. It came with a side of garlic rice! You dip the pork with the chili crisp and eat it with a scoop of rice, delicious!! I wish I had that dish right now. Overall, a great dinner spot in ktown!!!

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
