I want to gatekeep this place so bad but honestly this place deserves so much hype. Their chicken wings are one of the absolute best korean fried chicken places in LA ktown and I am honestly surprised that it took me until today to discover Chicken Today. I came in a party of three on a weekday night around 8 PM to find that there was no wait. The restaurant had some tables filled but for the most part, it was pretty empty with only one Korean waitress. We came for the AYCE wings with prices going for $19.99 for boneless wings and $24.99 for bone-in wings. I highly highly recommend getting the bone-in wings if you are going for the AYCE option. With the bone-in wings option, you are actually allowed to also try out the boneless wings. The AYCE wings option also comes with carrots and celery and baskets of fries which typically go for $8.99 each if you were to order from their normal menu. These bone-in wings were SO JUICY. In fact, there are probably one of the best chicken wings I have had in LA. I was so surprised by how high quality these wings were. I really did wish I could eat more. With the AYCE option, they come in 3 trays of 8 wings each (so 24 wings at a time). With three people in our party, we thought we could destroy it but the wings were so big and juicy that we could really only eat about 15 wings each. Because of how quickly we got full, we only ordered about 48 wings total... honestly might have been better if we didn't get the AYCE option but we're not complaining haha we were very happy and satisfied with our experience. Even though there was only one waitress, the service was really good. She kept checking in on us, asking if we needed more sides, sauce, or refills of chicken. 10/10 service. Ideally, this place would be popping. It would be a great place to watch a game with some friends and some beer. I drove by here the other day and thought this place would be interesting to try, but then forgot about it like I do everything else that seems interesting. But when I was going to Liu's Cafe to get their beef noodle soup and finding out it was sold out, it gave me the opportunity to try it because this was in front of where I parked. I'm so glad I did too because this just might possibly be the best place to get chicken in LA! Wow! I ordered a fried rice, which came out in a tower. It was nice because when you popped open the egg, the yolk was able to stay on the rice and it made for a scrumptious bite. Not to mention the seaweed flakes on the side gave it a nice flavor. Before the fried rice came out, they brought out a cabbage salad, which is something almost every Korean restaurant gave out in the past, but kind of a rarity nowadays, which was really nice. For the chicken, I asked the fellow which they would recommend, their wings or their whole chicken. They recommended the original and informed me that it was fried twice, which would give it a much crunchier and juicier texture. The last time I had a double fried chicken anything was at San Tung in San Francisco and I've never had double fried chicken in La, nor was able to find a place that did it. For over a decade, I've always wanted to eat at a place in LA that had double fried chicken. And here it was! When the chicken came out, it was so good. The crispiness was so light yet flavorful and the inside of the meat was so tender and juicy. They gave me salt and a sweet and sour sauce to go with it and while good, the chicken doesn't even really need any of it. This is now my favorite chicken in La and I'm definitely going to come back every now and then because it's at the top of my chicken list. Also, looking at the menu, they had some items where they put a new price on top of items. While most places put a higher price over their menu items, they put LOWER prices on theirs, so they are working to get a great and affordable price to everyone who comes. My bf and I came to the boba shop that was here years ago. We were surprised to see a new restaurant had replaced it. We were with a group of friends (note: none of us are Korean) and couldn't decide where to have dinner so we chose this spot. I really like this place! What initially caught my husband and I's eye was the fact that they play the Dodger games with the sound on. It gives us a good reason to enjoy a meal while watching the game outside of our home. The ones coated in sauce were great, the flavors weren't overpowering and the sauces weren't too thick. I appreciate them giving us gloves to eat them so our fingers don't get too dirty. I also appreciated the radishes and ranch on the side, they were good compliments to the chicken. The vibes were also nice inside, great for eating and drinking at night with friends. It was also clean. The waiters were also attentive and accommodating when serving us. However, the one thing I didn't like was the sense of discrimination from two of the servers. We walked in nearer to closing time and tried to flag down some waiters, but they ignored us and didn't want to seem to serve us. However, I had a Korean friend with me and she started to speak to them in Korean and they spoke to each other saying "oh! She's Korean" so they proceeded to accommodate us which my Korean friend translated for us. 3.5 stars This is our local KFC spot and we generally get take out. I've also gone here with friends for sit-in dinner. It's pretty easy to get seated. I admit, I'm always a bit baffled by how half empty this place is but I think they share kitchen/staff with Gangnam Pocha. And so, I think the staff runs both places at once and occasionally, it spreads them a bit thin. We typically get the chicken wings trio - regular, spicy and soy garlic. Its about $35 and fits 2 people pretty well. They have these kind of sets for the amount of people in group when they do sit-down. I forgot which set we got but it came with a generous portion of the chicken, a jigae, sides, and ddotboki. There were other things that we ordered as well but I think after tax and tip, it was like $150 for 5 people. I think generally Chicken Today is great for quick take out. Their fried chicken is always good but sometimes, the chicken is on the drier side? And staff is limited/can take a bit for them to prepare the takeout order. Loved this place so much we came back again but this time for takeout! We were able to order over the phone, had a difficult time communicating but we were eventually able to get the order right and it was ready once we got there which was great! Everything was packaged perfectly and reminded me of being in Korea as they sealed all the containers. We got the boneless trio again, rose tteokbokki and they even had a promotion with a choice of fries, tteokbokki or chicken gizzard so we opted for the tteokbokki again, really generous! The only downside is chicken today is far from where I live so the food wasn't super hot by the time we got home and I really wish I lived closer as I'd come more often for sure. The boneless trio was incredible and we wished we had ordered more, their sauces are to die for and the chicken is quality. They cook it perfectly and I love the fried tteokbokkis in the sauce, so unique and good! They did forget the salad which was a bummer as that's one of our favorites but they included all the sauces. I loved the spicy one but wish they gave us more ranch to dip with. All of the sides complimented the meal perfectly. My friend and I came for an early dinner on a whim. No customers were inside. We ordered the 1/2 fried chicken, black bean noodles, and cheese corn. Funny when we asked our server if there were any veggies, she said no. When she brought the fried chicken, it came with slaw, but the slaw was not in the picture. The delicious white radish (surprise!) came with the noodles which didn't have an egg in the picture (another surprise!), but came w an egg. I grabbed a piece of chicken, dipped it in the cheese, then dipped it in the corn, and it was an explosion of flavors in my mouth! The melted cheese helps the corn stick onto the fried chicken, which creates a burst of flavors. Perfect combination of spicy and savory flavors. The Chicken Trio Sampler was delicious as well, which came with three different flavors of fried chicken including Sweet Soy, Fried, or Spicy. I was surprised at how flavorful the chicken itself was without the sauce and the staff told me that they brine their chicken for at least 24 hours to make sure that the chicken is juicy and flavorful. The Whole Fried Chicken was great as well, especially with the garlic sauce. I love garlic so putting the sauce all over the chicken elevated the flavor profiles to a whole another level. All of their sauces are exactly the same as the ones in Korea since they import the ingredients directly from Korea. The Soup Tteokbokki is the perfect side item if you need some spicy foods to complement the fried chickens. Service: Staff were fast and friendly! I asked a lot of questions since it was my first time coming to this spot and the server was patient and thorough in answering all of my questions! It looks like all of the staff members speak both Korean and English, so it was nice to know that they would be able to cater towards everyone. Disappointing Experience with Chicken Quality I'm originally from OG Suyu-dong, and I was really excited to order from this location, hoping for the same great quality I've come to expect. Unfortunately, I was incredibly disappointed with what I received. The chicken tasted like it had been sitting out for a long time, and it didn't seem fresh at all. It was like they used the same sauce for ddeokbokee - was too sweet for chicken feet. First time we went, they had all day $5 beer for all of their beer selection. Second time, they limited the beer selection to 4 and later they tell us they ran out of 2.. Servers were generally all friendly but very unorganized. Place wasn't busy but they would get orders mixed up, not bring our beer, we asked for a refill on a salad but it was never received. They also close at 10.. (we got kicked out both of our visits cus it was near closing time). Atmosphere is a korean bar but i think they want to operate like a restaurant? TLDR: Do NOT get the AYCE Boneless Wings. They are not wing meat at all: mixing scrap meat and other tough/dry pieces and calling it a day. Visited to get their AYCE Boneless 'Wings' for 2 people. This famous Korean chicken spot decides to use scrap meat and other parts of meat that would not be classified as 'wings' in this universe and delivers arguably one of the worst fried chickens I've ever had. If you thought the sauces might be a saving grace, think again. Rated from Bad to 'Why are we still here? Just to suffer?' Bad: Korean Sweet Soy (best of the worst) - Nothing will get past bad cuz there is no saving for this. Even Gordon Ramsay won't be able to save this. Not your typical sweet soy sauce, but it was the best option out of the 4 we tried. Verdict: EHHHHHHHHH it's the lesser evil I'm confused: Lemon Pepper - Now the sauces had flavor profiles that tasted like they were made for fish dishes. It was very salty, oily, and overall left us very concerned for our stomach's well-being. Verdict: Get Wingstop Is this chicken or fish?: Korean Sweet n Spicy - This deadass tasted like the Korean fish dish, kodari-gangjeong. The flavor profile matches exactly, and somehow it throws you off because the tough/dry chicken breast feels so out of place. I've had some mediocre fried chicken, but fried chicken that tastes like a Korean fish dish is a first. I- you know what I'd rather eat that boring kodari gangjeong. Verdict: I'm at a loss for words Why are we still here? Just to suffer?: Garlic Parmesan - Uhhhhhh why does it taste like garlic bread? It tastes and smells like garlic bread, but the texture is dry chicken breast. At least it's not salty as hell? If a fried chicken place gives more confusion than how Americans feel when seeing the metric system, I think that speaks for itself. Oh yes, and service is quite slow, so just order away when your order arrives - given that you can eat that much dry, tough fried chicken that is the furthest thing away from juicy.
