Stopped here with my family including two small kids (1yr and 4yr) and had a very nice meal. The food came out fast and I'm pretty sure it was the owner who was serving us. She was so nice and gave us many recommendations for the Monterey area. The garlic chicken was my favorite. All the food was hot and fresh and so fast. I used to live in Oakland/Berkeley/Albany and we had access to so many good Chinese food/restaurants - I was shocked at the lack of quality restaurants in the Monterey area. I tried so many and so often very disappointed and brought back memories of when I worked and lived in Virginia. One day fee years ago I happen to see a sign at a strip mall called "Ho Wah" - I figured if they did not make their restaurant like "Happy Restaurant" "Golden Palace" "Happy Dragon" "Grand Palace" and named their place "Ho Wah" - I thought they might be authentic (as in they don't just serve the greasy noodles everyone seem to love only) I was right! While they do serve crowd pleasers like chow mein and spring rolls, I've tried many of their signature dishes like salt and pepper spare ribs, Peking style spare ribs, spring beans with garlic, and many many others - this place's chefs know how to cook and worth the drive to get there, from Pacific Grove to Marina! This was our first Time trying this restaurant and it did not disappoint. We Order veggie egg rolls and the vegetables were so fresh the outer of the egg roll was crunchy it was a perfect combination. My boyfriend was craving a hot and sour soup and he loved it, He even used the soup spoon to eat it We shared the veggie chow mein & beef and broccoli. once again the veggies were fresh, The broccoli had a perfect crunch as well. The service was great! Chef came out to ask if everything was great. We let him know that it was our first time and we we're very happy with our meal. But during this crazy Pandemic I think it's important to support local businesses. The lady who answered the phone was really nice. I ordered broccoli beef, and asked for a recommendation for an appetizer and she read the appetizer menu for me! I decided on the salt and pepper chicken wings. She threw in a free desert too. This is my family's go-to restaurant for Chinese food. We have no complains or negative comments on the quality and taste of their dishes (except that it's a bit pricey imo). The staff are always nice and courteous. The place is pretty small and not bright or well lighted, not like most Chinese restaurants I've been to. read more

This time we ordered salt and pepper fish 2 orders of sesame chicken and orange chicken with 2 orders of rice and 1 chow mein. The food was brought out and the lady said that be 140.00 bucks. I was shocked but I didn't say anything. I thought I will ck my tag in the car. I didn't get a receipt of what items cost. We left thinking wow expensive. Got home our fish had jalapenos all over it. Went to school nearby a few years ago and was passing through and I just had to get food here! Always loved the chow fun and salt and pepper wings are the best. I'm from LA and there's nothing like it there, had to get an extra order to go because it's that good! My friend didn't understand why I kept talking about Ho Wah until she tasted it and loved every bite too! We had chow fun, walnut shrimp, salt and pepper wings, and dumplings. Everything was as delicious as I remembered and the staff was super friendly too. 10/10 would recommend everyone to try at least once, and its a must stop for me every time I visit the Monterey Bay area. read more

First time here looking for a good Chinese food in Monterey. We ordered five dishes and two apps. The pepper fish which is petrale soul was delicious my favorite. The fish came out hot and fresh. The green bean combo was second and taste and texture. Chow mein noodle was OK. Nothing great Mongolian beef was OK the beef was cut up in tiny pieces. The eggrolls were a little dry and cooked too long. The salted edamame hardly had any garlic flavor. I will go back for the pepper fish and try the wings and the fried rice. read more

It's super old school but they use pretty fresh ingredients and it's not super salty and sweet like most other old school Americanized Chinese food. The sesame balls were fresh, crispy and hot. I ordered Chow Fun which was passable. When I looked on my bank statement they charged me $70.00! I was told it would be around $50.00. I called and the woman told me there was a $7.00 charge for gas. No one told me that when I ordered. Are you kidding me? $70.00 for shitty Chinese food. Save your money and go to Panda Express. Very good quality ingredients. The honey walnut shrimp was excellent as was the tofu eggplant. The tofu was so good...big pieces with a nice bite on the outside and super creamy in the middle. The egg foo young was cooked perfectly but the gravy was very salty, the bbq pork was just plain, stir fried pork, not the char shiu I was expecting, and the patty was filled with a ridiculous amount of shredded celery (did they mistake celery for onion?) These are the three dishes I order when I'm trying a new Chinese restaurant and overall, Ho-Wah did well enough that I'll definitely be back. read more

Food was terrible. I ordered a Happy Meal off the menu. It had two fried shrimp, an egg roll, it said "BBQ Pork" Chow Mein, (I think it said Pork) for the Pork Fried Rice, and you could add Sweet & Sour Pork. The broccoli in the Chow Mein was not fresh, I would say even past it's best by date, so the bad taste of the broccoli over powered the dish. The shrimp was good. The egg roll mediocre. I was most disappointed by the Pork Fried Rice cause it was HAM!!! Ham Fried Rice not Pork, barbecued or not. The only dish I found good was the Sweet & Sour Pork. It was decided on us to eat here by family since we were in the area. I will never return unless I see improved ratings as I did look it up before we went and it was barely over a 4.0. read more

The service was great, very attentive and the owner even came out and chatted with us before leaving. She told me about the house made broth for the Hong Kong Wor Wonton Soup, how they make the broth only using chicken meat and no skin, to preserve fresh flavor. I really did taste the difference.
