I'm a huge fan of their brûlée spam musubi. It's honestly the reason I keep coming back. This time I decided to switch it up and try the loco moco, and unfortunately it was really disappointing. I love a good loco moco, but this one just didn't hit. The beef patties were overly dry, and there was barely any gravy, which made the whole dish feel pretty unsatisfying. The mac salad was good, but overall the meal didn't feel worth the $16-$18 price point. That said, I do plan on coming back because the musubis really are that good. I'll just stick to what they do best or try something different next time. Parking is super easy since it's in a shopping area that never seems too busy, which is always a plus. read more

I came by HoAloha to pick up some lunch as I was picking up drinks and snacks next door at Smoking Tiger, and the aroma wafting over from HoAloha brought me in. The menu is pretty large and they also offer a catering menu. There are many kinds of appetizers like cheesy fries with your choice of protein, and many varieties of musubis. They also sell noodles (noodle soups and garlic noodles) as well as tacos. It was a Tuesday so I decided to try their daily special Fried Chicken Plate with mac salad. I also ordered the HoAloha Chicken Mix Plate with green salad. Both plates come with 2 scoops of rice. Food was ok, but I've honestly had better Hawaiian food. First thing I noticed was that the rice they serve is jasmine rather than the Calrose rice that is usually served with Hawaiian food. Some people don't care, but I'm kind of a rice nerd. It's like using basmati rice in your sushi. You can argue that it's still rice, but it's weird. The fried chicken was hit or miss. Some pieces were good, some were dried out and hard. The sauce that came with it was good. The mac salad was very slippery compared to other Hawaiian mac salads I've had. I kept dropping it everytime I tried to have a bite. The texture and taste reminds me of the mac salad that comes in the tub from the deli at the market. As for the chicken mix plate, the Katsu was pretty thin and dry also. I came here as a last minute decision bc I wanted to eat somewhere else in this plaza but it was closed so saw this place and decided to try. Upon arrival, the worker was friendly. The menu was a little overwhelming because there were a lot of options. I saw there was a daily special menu so I got the Thursday special which was Hawaiian bbq chicken plate for $12 ($14 with tax). The chicken tasted rubbery and the sauce was very watery. The rice was dry and the Mac salad was sweet (almost like an Italian deli vs Hawaiian Mac salad). Overall, the food was a 5/10. Service was 7/10, which is why this overall review will be a 6/10. I'm bummed I did not take a picture beforehand. A great place with daily specials and service was pretty quick! I came quick for a lunch loco moco special, it is $11.99 (no drinks) on Fridays and each day is different. I would like to say this would've been amazing if we ate at the restaurant but my highlights were the flavorful macaroni salad, salty and slightly sweet with a nice tang! So many businesses have come and go from this plaza and from that spot particularly. Seeing the high reviews, I wanted to check out their food and you can never go wrong with some good Hawaiian BBQ. We got the: 1) HoAloha Katsu Mix + Mac Salad: -Comes with a mix of their katsu meats including bbq beef, bbq short ribs, and chicken katsu. -It's a huge portion that's easily shared with others. -The short ribs and bbq beef were seasoned nicely and not too chewy. The chicken katsu was a tad drier than I would have liked it, but not so bad since there's lots of sauces and the delicious mac salad to balance it out. 2) Brulee Spam Musubi (4 pieces) -This sounded fancy and "brulee" isn't something you usually associate with spam musubi, so I had to order this especially since my bro is a huge musubi enjoyer. -It's a grilled spam musubi with spicy mayo and furikake on top. Not bad but nothing super fancy or special that you can add yourself on at home if you already have the condiments. 3) Crispy Beef Pockets (2 pieces): -This is something that I have never seen at a Hawaiian restaurant before so I knew I had to order this, especially since it was so highly rated in other reviews. -It's beef, scallion, and egg wrapped in spring roll skin and fried. -To me it was mediocre, just alright. Issue is for some reason my mom disliked it so much and kept saying it wasn't good at all. Don't know why her reaction was so exaggerated lol. -It is crispy due to the wonton wrapper like exterior, but a bit oily too. They were really thin and small. A very thinly spread amount of beef inside. Overall just ok. 4) Hawaiian Blue: -Tropical refreshing drink. A bit sweet, but just let the ice melt and you're good. 5) Crispy Spam Musubi (2 pieces): -Standard fried spam musubi. Can't really go wrong with this and it was the tastier of the musubi that we got. 6) Fried Chicken Bowl: -Karaage/popcorn chicken bowl. -Decent amount of chicken, once again a bit too dry, but nothing a bit of sauce won't help. I saw that this place opened recently near Cal Poly Pomona and was craving Hawaiian food. I chose to get the katsu mix (15.95) and brûlée spam musubi ($6.95). The mix came with chickens katsu, bbq beef, and short ribs. The rice was mushy and too wet. The beef was chewy, but I did like the katsu more. Their dipping sauces for the meat went well with them. The crispy beef pocket is a nice delight. Light wonton like wrap, crispy on the outside with juicy meat in the inside. The sweet and sour sauce is perfect with it. The aloha bbq mix plate is great if you want a variety of short rib, beef and chicken. The aloha fried chicken plate comes with a Sriracha mayo like sauce which is a great combination. They had high chairs stowed in the back available for us to use. I did ask if i could have a modification to one of the protein items on my mix plate to sub for tofu. They weren't able to accommodate that. The plate came with chicken katsu, bbq beef and short rib. The katsu was light and crispy. The bbq beef had a sweet soy marinated flavor. The short rib was pretty good. It was tender. It was served with a side of two scoops of rice and option of Mac salad or green salad. We opted for Mac salad. The brûlée masubi was pretty tasty. I liked the presentation of the brûlée spicy Mayo and furikake. My gripe about the masubi was that it's advertised as 4 pieces per serving. Wow! Finally some good Hawaiian food in the area! Have tried many but they all seem to be the same, and the food usually are the same. This seems to be more authentic, similar to food I ate recently on my trip to Hawaii. Ordering was easy on the phone, and pick up was fast as well. We got the Hoaloha BBQ mix and also the Loco Moco. I have got to say that Brulee Musubis is a must try. Wish I had ordered more ! Came by after class today to try the new Hawaiian Spot near campus and was very happy I did! I ordered the Brûlée masubi and Cucumber Mint lemonade. Both were very tasty. The drink had plenty of fresh herb. The sauce on the masubi was so good! In the future id ask for a side of it as well since it'd be perfect to dip it in!
