This place is just unique from the menu, to the people and waitstaff, to the setting of this place. To create this theme is completely creative and very entrepreneurial. The whole concept is of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth world that focuses on Hobbits and Earthly concept. All orders of the main entree are of Huge Hobbit servings meaning they are huge. (Even though Hobbits are small they eat 2 times more then the avg human. Their favorite past time is to eat and they eat 5 meals per day!) The menu is overwhelming. I wanted to try almost everything listed on the menu. They have vegetarian dishes and almost anything you can think of even Shrimp Spring rolls. Even though one of the entrance is off of Richmond, it is in a secluded area deep in the parking lot. You can't even hear the noisy traffic of Richmond even while you are sitting outside in the patio. I believe this place used to be someone's house. Parking sux here. So far I have tried the Bonair Burger, which wasn't all that. I went back the second time to try the Far Down Sandwich. The egg salad that was suppose to be with the sandwich tasted weird. It had too much of a weird herb in it that I can't make out and not enough mayo or no mayo. Mayo is the only thing that makes a good egg salad. Both of these items I got the slim portion. Each of their meals can be served regular or slim size. Slim size is pretty much medium size. Regular is like an extra large portion for some one that hasn't eaten in two days! What I found awkward was that the sides such as Onion Rings were sheisty. I paid $1.99 more for my sides of Onion Rings and I only got 5 rings that made my plate look half empty compared to the potato chips that comes with most of their meals. The only thing delicious, I have tried here, is the Mango smoothie. I got great service here. However, I wish the one waiter would properly wear his pants over his butt. He looks like a DWEEB exposing his boxer! Wearing your pants below your butt is completely tasteless! I showed up at 5 on a Sunday with a surprise group of 20 people. They promptly sat us on the patio and our waitress Cindy came out and told us about the special, the $20 Balrog burger. I got the special and a coffee and started out sharing the Jamaican Jersey Wings. The wings were awesome and the coffee was good. OK- let's start with the positives first. I went here with my boyfriend on a Saturday night, and the restaurant wasn't too crowded. He loved this place as he is a HUGE Lord of the Rings fans; his appreciation of the wall decor/art was very apparent. He proceeded to order a Lamb Burger (I believe), and found it pretty satisfactory. Whether or not his senses/opinion were swayed by the ambience, I don't know. But he would probably give this place a 4 stars. Now, let's profile me: not a Lord of the Rings fan, not a American cafe/pub food fan, and ESPECIALLY not a fan of wasting money on food that is severely unsatisfactory. Now, I don't have posh taste buds and particular expectations for my food, but my order of the Chicken Enchiladas Verde (which the waiter recommended and said was one of the more popular dishes) was absolute trash. The chicken was super dry, tasteless, and the dish as a whole was lacking in flavor. I remember coming to this place when I was a kid and it was located on Shepherd where the road crooks. One of TOP 3 veggie burgers in town- Black Bean Burger on Whole Wheat bun. The decor is quirky and cute and hasn't changed in 2 decades (which is why I love it). The patio, with it's permanent multi-colored Christmas lights, is the perfect relaxed place for getting a burger and a mug of beer for lunch or dinner. BURGERS here are great and are CHEAP. Was looking for a lunch spot and the bf found this spot on Yelp and the reviews led us here. First negative is their parking lot. Hobbit Cafe shares a lot with several other businesses and they have attempted to make each businesses lots individualized with the parking spots all going in different directions. VERY confusing. Once we figured out where to park we entered the restaurant. As we were entering the front door there was a male and female employee exiting a door behind where the hostess station is. While they saw us they did not speak nor alert anyone to our presence. We then stood there for about 10 minutes without ever seeing another employee. As a Lord of the Rings fan, I think the theme of the cafe is a great contributor to what made my meal as satisfying as it was. I started out with a guacamole salad as the appetizer. Yeah, it's exactly what it sounds like. A huge scoop of deliciously fresh made avocado goodness on a bed of mixed greens with tomatoes and cucumbers. We had a side of crispy tortilla chips that helped us gobble down the excess guac. I'm pretty sure it was the freshest and most generous amount of avocado that was served to me in all my life...at a restaurant. This is a big deal. For my meal, I ordered The Shire sandwich. it consisted of a huge amount of tabbouleh, more avocado, and alfalfa sprouts between two slices of lightly toasted wheat bread. I ate the whole thing, and it was refreshing and delicious and a mess..and I'm not ashamed. Overall, my meal was refreshing and the ingredients were light and healthy. I'm still full since I had lunch at 3 PM and it's now 10:23PM as I'm writing this review. In no time am I prepared to consume anything until bed time. We had just finished working out and decided to try a local "healthy" food. We had trouble finding the place since is tuck into a corner and parking wasn't the greatest (granted we arrived at 7:00pm). Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted by some of the friendliest staff ever. Our waitress was nice and knowledgeable. I had the salmon burger, which was probably one of the better fish burgers I have had. I ordered the avocado on the side (I wasn't too sure how I felt about fish and avocado) and boy was it not only a plentiful amount of avocado but it sure was delicious with the salmon. Go to the Hobbit Cafe at least two or three times, then make a decision about the place. You WILL like something on the menu. It is eclectic and suits just about everyone's needs without losing quality in the process. The place has quite a history in that it has been around for just over 40 years now. You could even say that they built a Lord of the Rings themed restaurant before it was cool, but that wouldn't be entirely true since the books gained immense popularity in the U.S. during the 60s. But I digress, this place is most certainly a gem in the restaurant heavy city of Houston. Great Beer. Fantastic Food. Delicious Desserts. Let's start with the beer. The Hobbit has an extensive beer list with no filler on it. Last night I was able to order a pint of the St. Bernardus ABT 12. I do not think I have ever seen this beer on tap at any Houston bars, let alone a Houston restaurant. Other great beers include Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and scads of other foreign and local beers. Food here is phenomenal. Every entree that I have had (3) has had something to write home about. Last night I had the Spinach Enchiladas with mole sauce. I was surprised by how delicious the mole sauce was. The ingredients were very fresh and held their own amidst the symphony of flavors. Everything about the dish was flavorful, especially the rice and black beans. My friend, a recent transplant from Dallas, ordered the Jerk chicken. He boldly exclaimed that the rice - an Indian spiced rice that probably had cumin, ginger or some mint to it - was the best rice that he had ever eaten. I tried some and found it hard not to agree. The chicken actually took a backseat over it, I think (even though it too was delicious). After the main course I decided to get dessert because why-the-hell-not. I ordered a key lime pie that elicited another proud exclamation from my friend that went something like "this is the best key lime pie I've ever had", no joke. It was delicious and I cannot remember one that I have had that was better. The crust had brown sugar and really enhanced the overall flavor. If you get a pie from house of pies, you probably forgo the crust and just eat the insides. Not with this pie, you don't. To sum up this experience, the waitstaff was incredibly attentive and nice for a packed house. We did not arrive until an hour before close and even as we finished - 10 minutes before close - we were asked if we wanted dessert. On my only other trip, the waitstaff was never bad, just laid back. This time, they were spot on. Parking can be a trip, so be sure to utilize the immediate neighborhoods behind the building. I've been going to the Hobbit Cafe for a long time now, and the food's always been consistent. The Hobbit can handle many food allergies and special diets, but you have to be very clear about your restrictions at the get-go. The parking is abysmal, but it's never stopped me from coming. We love their smoothies (get the Mithril - trust me). I usually stick to three items that I keep ordering over and over: Shrimp Egg Rolls, Fruit Salad, and their Fish Tacos. Their sandwiches are huge, and really good as well. I have been to Hobbit Cafe a few times over the span of over 7 years. I am happy to say it has only improved with time. The first time I went, we sat inside on a tiny little table in the midst of awesome Tolkeinesque decor and felt almost like we were in a Hobbit Hole (VERY COOL). However, both the service and the food at the time fell short of my expectations. I didn't plan to return and forgot about this cafe. A couple years later, i returned with a group of friends and we all had a fantastic time with a fantastic waitstaff. i was pleasantly surprised. But the food did not make me want to return again and again. A couple of months ago, I went back again. And this time I became a believer in Hobbit Cafe. The food, the service, the decor - they have gotten it perfect now. I had a blast and enjoyed every moment of my meal. The food was AMAZING. I had the shrimp rolls to start and the angus beef burger with chili cheese sauce for my main course. BEST DECISION EVER. I was happy in my tummy and my taste buds adored my decisions. My friend had a salad and enjoyed it just as much. She also enjoyed her beer quite a lot. I also got a dessert (chocolate mousse cake) and while it wasn't the best I've ever had, it was certainly good. If you are in the mood for something different and delicious, this is the perfect place whether you are as few as one person or as many as 12 people. They also have their own small parking lot so unless it's very crowded, you won't have to find street parking. We chose this restaurant on a whim. My father and my boyfriend are Lord of the Rings fans. It is the MOST quaint and idyllic place we have been to in Houston. The food was FABULOUS!!! The service was fantastic. We went for lunch and decided to return during happy hour 3-7 pm with the rest of the family. We tried nearly all of the appetizers and they were to die for. We then tried several dishes ranging from the best burgers we have eaten to fish tacos to a chicken/bacon/cheese dish. EVERYTHING was fantastic! We also tried several of the smoothies...also DELICIOUS! The service was also marvelous. If the food and the ambiance were not enough, they had excellent souvenirs with the Hobbit Café name on them. We bought ten of their wine glasses, three t-shirts, and three bottles. If you get the chance, go by for lunch, dinner, or even brunch on the weekends. You will love this place! read more

The cafe has a nice, laid-back feel to it and love the big front porch seating. Staff is friendly and service was great. The themed setting makes for a fun atmosphere. Friend ordered the Spinach Mushroom Enchiladas with mole sauce and it came out very salty, ended up having to send it back (something was wrong with the sauce apparently). I wanted so badly to like Hobbit Cafe, but its not my cup of tea. The two stars is denoted as "Meh. I've experienced better." That to me, means that I don't hate it, but I'm not rushing back. That's how I feel. I've been roughly five times. I have never had luck with seating. Its very tight and hard to move around. Outside has only been comfortable once. I love the idea and I love the atmosphere, but the service and the food leave a lot to be desired. I don't remember a meal that was good. Some unmemorable ones and some I hated. One time I got a sandwich (I forget which one) and the meat was full of gristle. It was pretty gross and I felt awful that I ordered it. Most people love their sweet potato fries, and they do look really good. The worst experience I had there was being seated in a tight little corner with a new and very nervous waitress who kept apologizing over and over (I used to be a waitress, so I know it can be nerve-wracking being new). Right next to us was a table of about 6 people (looked like 3 couples). One lady threw a fit about her bill and demanded to see the manager. Even though I was on the restaurant's side (I mean, it wasn't like I couldn't hear every single word), the waitress and the manager handled it really poorly. They stood in the dining room and argued with her for 20 minutes while every single person in the dining room awkwardly tried to finish their meal and leave. It was handled really unprofessionally and it alienated a dining room full of people. All this being said, if a group of my friends wanted to go here, I would go and enjoy my time with them. A word of warning: if something says it has avocados on it, you'd better be prepared to eat some avocado. For reals. All those avocado-haters out there or people complaining that there was too much 'cado: why are you at the Hobbit? And why aren't you capable of removing some of the avocado from your food? The Hobbit Hole is the raddest joint in town. I went to visit a friend for my first visit to Texas and she took me to the Hobbit Cafe (she kept calling it the Hobbit Hole since it used to be called that before the original structure burned down) almost immediately. We went twice after that, and each time the service was good. One time the server seemed pretty out of it, but the food arrived quickly and we had no complaints. The smoothies are all great - not sweetened, so fair warning. The portions are HUGE (therefore: not overpriced) so strongly consider sharing a sandwich or burger with another person. Everything was fresh, the variety of foods was wide, and the patio was so gorgeous in the evening. The only other place I've gotten a vibe like this is in the Hawaiian islands - people are chatty rather than rapid, the food is fresh and healthy rather than fussily plated. We never felt like we had to LEAVE as soon as we came close to finishing our meals. I'm a 28 year old woman (as opposed to an aging hippy) and I'd rather have a laid back overabundance of avocado than some chain restaurant any day. read more

Hobbit Cafe is a wonderful restaurant offering a healthy and vegetarian menu that is also reasonably priced. The restaurant is situated at the back of the same complex that holds LZs and Bluefish. Watch out in the parking lot for massive potholes (I recommend parking on the street). The entire restaurant is a converted house and is decorated as if a Lord of the Rings fanatic lived there. There's also a pretty large patio area that's nice when it isn't too humid out. The food here is pretty spot on. I like to get a smoothie to start out with, and then I usually go for beans and rice or a gardenburger. The other items I have tried on the menu are also quite good, especially the salads. Hobbit cafe! This was my 2nd time to this place, 1st time for brunch. We stopped by after gym on Saturday around 1:30pm. Their brunch menu goes til 2pm. We had to wait for about 10 minute, not too bad. Atmosphere: This place is unique. In the inside they got different sections of the room so you are not in an open area. They have Lord of the Rings posters and things like that. Waiter: Our waiter came by pretty fast and got out drinks order. There were a lot of people and he seemed a bit rushed, but understandable. I asked what was their most popular pancakes and he recommended coconut pancake, which we ended up ordering and loved it! Menu: The brunch menu is not bad. It got most of the things you look for a brunch place. I think you can order from their whole menu during brunch and they got good selection of sandwiches and burgers. Food: So we ordered the following: Smoked turkey Benedict with the sauce on the side, Portobello Mushroom Fajitas and eggs, and coconut pancake. My smoked turkey benedict was COLD when it came out. I like my food hot and fresh so this was very disappointing to me. The english muffin at the bottom was toasted and cooled so it was hard. Taste-wise, it was good. Turkey was pretty lean and I think it would have been SOOOO much better if it was hot. On the other hand, Portobello Mushroom Fajitas and Eggs were HOT when it came out. I think my food was finished first and was waiting for my boyfriend's food to be done. I wish they can time it better. His food was great. portobello mushrooms were very delicious! And last but not least, COCONUT PANCAKE. This thing was so fluffy and it was sweet, tasty, and delicious! It was more of a dessert for us. It was so good that we ordered another one! This is a great place for the huge Lord of the Rings fans not too much unlike myself. A great place if you want a huge burger or sandwich. Its very easy to share one of these monstrous sandwiches, which is funny because Hobbits are such small creatures. I love sitting out on the front patio and enjoying the strung lights in the evening. Its very unlike any other little place I've been. Its like the dive bar of little restaurants. The parking lot is a bit rough if you don't own a 4x4 truck or SUV. I drive a small, lowered car so beware the large pot holes. Thats the only bad thing there is to say about this place. I love it: my car doesn't, but I do! Walking in to this little jewel I was curious why it is called Hobbit Cafe. My guess is Lord of the Rings, right by the hostess stand there was that little Smeagle character from the movie (really freaky). The atmosphere is like a little house that needs some attention. The floors creek, not a whole lot of light coming through and the furniture looks like it discarded on the side of the road. The food is absolutely delicious though. I notice that I try to venture out and get something new but I keep coming back to that fruit salad with the yogurt and honey. Its such a bright, fresh, and healthy appetizer. They have this bean burger that is pretty tasty as well, with the sweet potato fries it so good. Their portions are pretty big so you can share a lot of the entrees or know that you will be asking for a to-go box. I feel that I have to mention the women's bathrooms. There are no doors on the stalls just curtains, you have been warned. Parking is minimal so you can park on the street as well. read more

It's has curry chicken, sliced grapes, slivered almonds, and fresh greens in it. There's a lot of it, too. I ordered the slim and I still couldn't finish it. The gingerbread pancakes are really good, but I probably wouldn't order them again- there's are more interesting menu items to try out. The only con is the wait time for the food. The Hobbit Cafe's pretty busy on the weekends, so my advice is to go on the weekdays. Overall, pretty darn good experience there. I have been to the Hobbit Cafe many times over many years. I went there today with my wife and I would have liked to have left this place and its memories as they were in personal nostalgia. I know the place moved to its current location many years ago, but it's just not the same experience. The current place leaves a lot to be desired. It's just a run down old house with LOTR posters on the walls. The food was mediocre at best , we had the spinach mushroom quesadillas and I had the Turkey BLT. The food was not impressive by any means and not as I remembered (which was very good). The service was next to non existent. I will not be returning to this restaurant. I found it here on Yelp saw the awesome reviews and my husband loves The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit so I thought it would be great. Negative. I went in knowing I was gonna get the Avocado Burger because of all the reviews and photos. My husband got the bacon cheese burger. Neither of us could finish our burgers. Our server was nice to start and then disappeared after the food hit the table. The food wasn't really for us though I will say their onion rings were amazing. When it was time to go our server was no where to be found. So we waited. After 30 minutes of waiting for her to come by so we could pay we walked up to the front where the other server had to go find her. We paid and left and we probably won't be back. After reading so many positive reviews, I thought this would be fantastic. But I didn't have a very good experience. The parking lot is tiny, and the spots are so close to each other. So if you don't drive a compact car, parking is probably completely miserable. Then you walk in, and it definitely looks like a house that was converted into a restaurant. I got the spinach and mushroom quesadillas, and when I got them they were just soggy and gross. The tortilla was burnt which caused another layer of weird taste to the whole thing. The waitress kept bumping into our table too, which caused for an unpleasant dining experience. Maybe they shouldn't put so many tables in such a small area. I won't be back. read more

What a charming little place. We came here for lunch and it was quite busy but we were able to get a seat outside. The decor was adorable. Our waiter was a little swamped but another waiter who I assume is the owner was great. I ordered a sandwich with turkey, advocado and bacon. It was very good, the only complaint I have about it is that the pieces of avocado were huge and right where you take the first bit so all you got was avocado. I wish it was spread around a bit. The key lime pie was recommend by the owner and it was the best I have ever had. I want more in my mouth right now. Great place overall, I will be back when I am in town again! read more

My speech club, Professional Speaking Singles Toastmasters Club, invited me to some small party here.The location was near Lakewood Church and Greenway Plaza.Traffic and parking were good on December 29th 2014. I was looking for the restaurant.Somebody said, " Happy New Year, You are in the right place". I had " Happy New Year hut". I entered into the restaurant. Very Narrow and crowded. I found my group, PSST.They were eating some Chips. I was guessing that this would be some Tex-Mex restaurant. I walked around the restaurant. There were many pictures from The Lord of The Rings. I asked them " Where are my Godzilla and Picachu pictures?". There was no such things at this restaurant. I returned to my table.I checked a menu.I found "Blacked Fish Tacos". I would like to eat sashimi tacos.I asked a server about Sahimi.Of course, there was no such a thing. Lucky, the tacos were great.
