    house noodle soup

MUST TRY EVEN FOR NONVEGANS!!! 11 of us meat-eaters celebrated our vegan friend's birthday here, and we were pleasantly surprised by how good everything was! I shared the house noodle soup and ma-la noodles. The house noodle broth was light and perfectly seasoned, and the vegan meat tasted similar to seafood (like the flavor of clam/mussel to me). The ma-la noodles had some ground and slices of vegan meat. It was the perfect amount of numbing and not too spicy for me. I actually thought the vegan meats added a nice depth of flavor to the dishes, and the sliced meat was similar tasting to spam but better in my opinion! I tried one of my friend's ma-la wontons and OMG I never expected the filling to be SO GOOD and flavorful! The description of "tofu wonton" does not do it justice, and I would highly recommend trying it. The restaurant ambiance was so cute, and the service was amazing! The owners and their staff were so sweet!!! They even brought out free spring rolls as a birthday gift to my friend.

In lieu of Pine Forest closing in Chinatown, we now have family-owned Vegee Green tucked out in the Sugar Land/Missouri City area in a still developing shopping center that I didn't even know existed (I honestly don't go to that area very often if at all, really). They only just opened on August 29th though they're currently under a soft opening of sorts. They serve vegan, allium-free Chinese food, heavily influenced by Sichuan cuisine since that's where the owners hailed from. Their menu is currently the shortest I've seen from an Asian restaurant, but there's still some variety: you'll find items from Spring Rolls and Sweet and Sour "Meat" and fried rice all the way to Mapo Tofu, Ma La Noodles, and even Hot Pot. I mentioned Sichuan because they're known for spicy food (think peppercorns and dried red peppers) so about half of their menu does have a chili pepper or two. But don't fret! I admittedly need a tissue with spicy food but the spicy level I encountered here wasn't actually that bad! The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a way that gave me industrial Scandinavian vibes. Tables were cleaned promptly after a customer left. The place isn't large but they can accommodate both big and smaller parties as the tables can be moved around. What set this place apart is that they use touchscreen kiosks to order your food from. It's all fairly self explanatory, but they're located next to the counter so you can quickly ask a question if needed. At the end, you choose the number of the table you'll be sitting at (each number is labeled on their respective table but it's hard to see from the kiosks... we just asked an employee). I visited with my sister and her husband who had gone there before so they ordered. We got: SWEET AND SOUR VEGAN MEAT - I love sweet and sour anything so this is definitely a go to for me at Asian restaurants. They use small, textured vegan meat that is deep fried with a s/s sauce that isn't bright red. I like the fact that it doesn't look radioactive and the taste is pretty good. The "meat" is tougher than the ones from Pine Forest, but not a bad thing. You just can't go wrong! No veggies though - just the protein and garnish. FRIED SICHUAN EGGPLANT - these are battered, deep fried eggplant chunks with a spicy sauce sort of drizzled on top. Despite how little sauce there was and I am a huge on sauces, it still worked. They weren't noticeably greasy but were light and the sauce was just right. Quite delicious. BUDDHA'S DELIGHT - With the other dishes being monotone in color, we wanted a veggie dish and this one was chosen. This was rather flavorful and had a good selection of ingredients from wood ear fungus and bean curd to broccoli, cabbage, and carrots. It didn't have nearly enough veggies as we probably needed for this to be a well balanced meal, but it didn't take away from the fact that it was good. *note about Rice: they do not provide serving bowls of rice and Rice is not an option when you order on the kiosk. They asked us how many small bowls of rice we wanted and if you want more, you'll get another single bowl. Rice is free of charge but if you devour rice like Cookie Monster consumes cookies, it might be inconvenient. And a lot of bowls. ROSE TEA: these are rose hips and I was impressed by the color as it steeped as well as the cute little miniature mugs they provided. It was nice and mildly flavored. A hint of floral notes and something that reminded me of hibiscus, but not as tart. Not bad. I do love my caffeinated drinks so I normally don't go for herbal/floral teas, but all things considered, I enjoyed it. They also provide a thermos of hot water so you can refill at your own discretion. I do like this place. The owners are quite nice. The wife is outside with the customers and she would check on everyone along with the two other employees behind the counter. They are receptive to suggestions or comments since they're still new. They have an interesting playlist for background music from something that would be at home on Sunny 99.1 to instrumental traditional Chinese tunes. I would like to note that the white serving dishes they use along with our plates and bowls are all melamine. I'm noting this because melamine serving dishes are light so you'll need two hands when spooning out food; one to stabilize and the other to scoop. Also, the portions aren't the biggest. We got 3 dishes for 3 people and we finished every single morsel. And we started getting hungry again about 2 hours later. For about $14 to $16 per dish, it isn't the most cost effective. I do wish the portions were bigger. Overall, a solid place to go to for plant-based folk. I'm new to Sichuan cuisine so I'm interested in returning to try more items. So far, the flavor is good. I'm excited to see what's in store when they transition out of the soft opening stage and they've got everything ironed out.

In my experience, beef chow fun at other restaurants often suffers from soggy rice noodles, uneven flavoring, and noodles that stick together. Most notably, other places often use excessive oil that pools at the bottom of the plate. As you can see in the attached pictures, the flavor here was very even, and the texture was firm without being chewy. Each noodle was clearly separated, and there was almost no oil pooling at the bottom. Having eaten Chinese and Vietnamese food my entire life, I strongly recommend this place.

I swear it's just one really long hand made noodle, so it's a bit hard to share, but it's a must-get. We also tried the Claypot noodle and it was good as well but a bit of an acquired taste. The restaurant is located inside Jusgo grocery store. The seating is quite limited so I wouldn't recommend it for large parties. And it's pretty mom and pop, so if that's your jam, go for it. Chairs are mismatched, drinking water is somewhat self-service in small cafeteria-style plastic cups, and tables are small. Like I said - mom and pop, and that's not a bad thing. It's just not exactly a place where you would have a nice business meeting. Service was ok - nothing to note. You pay at the cashier which is like 2 feet from where you ate. Yes, it's a small space. Overall - I love this place and will keep coming back.

The Shanxi oil noodle is still the best in town with perfectly chewy noodles with the most well balanced sauce. I decided to try the claypot noodle with crisp pork which arrived piping hot with excellent flavor and the same hand pulled thick noodles. The soup was very well seasoned and paired well with the noodles, but I'm not certain that I would get it again since their other dishes are so spectacular.
