If you're looking for that classic, "neighborhood local" energy where the servers know the regulars by name, A Good Morning is the spot. I came in for a late breakfast around 10:45 AM today with a friend who frequents this place, and the warm, immediate recognition from the staff really set the tone. * The Food: Their menu is full of American breakfast and lunch classics. While I usually go for their breakfast staples--perfectly made hashbrowns, eggs, and proteins--I shifted gears to the lunch side of the menu today. Royal Deck Double Decker: I ordered this monster of a sandwich--hickory smoked bacon, turkey, ham, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. As you can see from the photo, it's a serious stack! Everything was fresh, and the fries were a solid accompaniment. I actually ended up taking half the sandwich home, which makes the price point a lot easier to justify. For the Sweet Tooths: My dining partner went the sweet route with pancakes and eggs. They have plenty of options if you're looking for a sugar kick to start your day. * The Environment: The interior is small and definitely "no-frills," which adds to that nostalgic diner charm. It can get a bit bustling, but they do have outdoor seating available which is a great option when the California weather is cooperating. * The Price: It's the "Los Altos Standard" these days. For a sandwich, apple juice, an order of pancakes, eggs, and coffee, the bill landed at $46.93. A bit of a "sigh" moment for a diner meal, but since I got two sittings out of that sandwich, I can tolerate the price a little more. The Bottom Line: You aren't coming here for "avocado toast with microgreens" chic; you're coming for reliable, well-executed classics and a staff that makes you feel like family. I'll definitely be back next time I'm craving for some crispy golden brown hash browns!

This is a good place for a quick breakfast with some decent standard breakfast items. The service was great and the staff were friendly and attentive. I had the standard Egg's Benedict and while the eggs were done perfectly the hollandaise sauce was a little watery. The ham had little flavor or seasoning. However, the hash browns were done crisply and the sausage was tasty. My wife had the bacon, egg and cheese croissant which apparently was pretty good. There isn't anything to make them stand out among breakfast joints but I'd give them another try. Be aware that they are charging a $1 surcharge per egg due to the egg shortage. $1 may be a little high but at least they are up front about it.

Good food and service from a nice little place in a strip mall. Surprised how quiet it was for morning breakfast time but apparently that's a Palo Alto thing. Service was good and attentive. Nice big coffee too. Food was good, Cajun sausage had a nice little kick to it, tho could have been hotter, food wasn't super hot. Gravy was good but could use a little more taste. Nice time and would go back.

Food came out super speedy, but the food itself didn't excel. I am unlikely to return Saturday morning, the place was almost full, but was seated without wait. It is located in a plaza with plenty of parking. Menu is pretty standard American fare, with categories including benedicts, scrambles, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches and burritos. Most are around $18/plate. Best value seems like the lox bagel sandwich at $10 The omelette, while cooked well, had major flaws. All components were under seasoned, including the fillings of the omelette itself, and the side of potatoes. The cheese was also draped onto, instead of being integrated into the omelette. This made it difficult to eat the omelette, as the fillings had no binder to hold the different ingredients together The biscuits in the biscuits and gravy plate were also dense, and some had a slight raw dough flavour

Visiting from Southern California. This breakfast spot was within walking distance from our hotel. The food was great. There was a line to be seated inside, bring a warm jacket to skip the line and sit outside. They have warmers. Service was friendly.

I've been coming here for years and have always left feeling happy with my experience. The food is delicious, and I appreciate how quick the service is. Whenever I've visited I always sit outside for more privacy and space, though it can get a bit chilly out there with how windy it gets so always bring a coat/sweatshirt!

No juices (and they've never had them) even though they're on the menu. Food came out randomly. Our 5 year old got his order last even though we asked that it come out first. When we added a hot chocolate with the server, nothing came out after 15 minutes. So I walked in. There were 5 staff behind the counter. 3 were on their smartphones. 2 were joking with each other. When I finally got one of their attention, I asked about the drink. They said it would come out. Kiddo needed to go to the bathroom. Floorboards were rotten and torn on the walk over. Grimy, gross sink with that film on the door that you see in dive bars. We wait 10 minutes. Still no drink. I go back in with the boy and stand over the the barista so that they'd hand us a hot chocolate. Food was good, but with service and ambience like that, might as well go to a Starbucks. The menu will be current, the drinks will come out fast, the bathrooms won't be grimy, and the servers will give you the time of day.

So a few days after returning from an overseas trip, I made a lunch reservation with a friend. Apparently, reservations are required if you want a proper meal experience. At $35 per person for lunch, including tip but excluding drinks and additions, it still seemed like good value. Finding parking during lunch time in downtown Los Altos was surprisingly difficult. There were no spots available on the Main Street, so I had to park in the lot behind the buildings. As I walked inside, I admired the high ceilings, curved alcoves and glass-enclosed dining room by the entrance. The entire space seemed to be illuminated by a central skylight. Aaron is a co-owner of Tal Palo along with his partner, Chef Adriana. He greeted and complimented me on my Mikkeller Taipei t-shirt. Aaron told us he was once the co-owner of an Oakland bar specializing in Belgian ale called The Trappist and subsequently knew Mikkel's brother, Jeppe, who founded Evil Twin Brewery quite well. It was cool to meet a fellow artist and Renaissance man. Fittingly, the beautiful space was largely designed by Aaron. We had our choice of seating. It didn't seem as if there were any two tables and chairs that were alike. Each part of the dining room was unique. There's a really nice patio in the back with a cool huge mural on the wall that is undoubtedly popular during warmer months. We chose a nice broad two top table near the entrance, lit brightly by the skylight above it. Chef Adriana introduced herself and brought by what was essentially an elote muffin, and offered it as an optional appetizer. We took her up on it. It was delicious and buttery with the texture of corn kernels, not simply pureed into a batter. I also ordered a Cafe de Olla, which was pleasantly sweet and blended with cinnamon and spices. She then brought a plate with skillfully prepared green salad. It was then clear that each dish was meant to be shared family-style. The portion-size of each dish is about the size of an individual portion, but there were three dishes included in the lunch course. I could see how this might be an issue for those who eat larger portions, leaving them unsatisfied. Me and my friend don't generally eat a ton, so this was perfectly fine for us. Next up was the highlight of the meal, Chilaquiles Verde. The egg was perfectly fried atop tortilla chips that still had a bit of crispness to them. The tomatillo salsa was a perfect balance of flavor, tanginess, spice and temperature. It was a superb dish that outpaces any chilaquiles that I've been able to find locally, and I've certainly been trying out many for the past six months in search of the best one. I think Chef Adriana's version at Tal Palo may be the winner. There was one more interesting dish remaining: fried quesadillas served with a creamy red beet mole sauce. The quesadillas were light and fluffy, made from masa rather than flour. The beet mole sauce had pine nuts and sesame seeds and several other ingredients blended into it. Very unique and creative rendition unlike any mole I had ever tried. The overall experience at Tal Palo was very unique. There is no set menu, and you are served whatever Chef Adriana has prepared that day. So one needs to approach this restaurant with an open mind and leave preconceptions at the door. As I mentioned earlier, the shared portions might not be enough for people with a higher caloric intake. If these are showstoppers, this is probably not the right place for you. I personally really enjoyed the concept and experience. I look forward to trying their dinner course and going to their workshops for things like making tamales.
