We have been reading tons of reviews for BBQ places around Durham as we were preparing to travel through. My husband and I both, despite being on the Gulf Coast where sweet, thick BBQ sauce reigns, were raised on good Carolina style with slaw. After all the reviews and other negative reviews and frustrations we decided to just find a close one on our journey north on 85. Several popped up, but we loved the raw, hole in the wall feel that screamed established and local favorite. Our order included a chicken breast, two pulled pork with slaw sandwiches, okra, granny's potatoes, and mac and cheese. The potatoes were on a recommendation. They were reds boiled in butter with onions it was good. I ordered it on a recommendation. It was a little rich for me, but it was good. It just isn't my style. Everything else was a 10. The food was fast. The staff was efficient.

We wanted to try bbq during our short visit to North Carolina and Hog Heaven definitely lives up to its name. Hog Heaven has a decent size parking lot, a drive-thru, and they accept cash/card. We shared a BBQ & Fried Chicken Combo with Baked Apples and Turnip Greens with an iced tea for $14.19 total and it was delicious. We asked for dark meat but accidentally received white meat by mistake (but it was so moist and flavorful especially for white meat). The barbecue was tangy, juicy, and incredibly soft. It had a unique seasoning that had a slight heat at the end. Turnip greens were savory and the baked apples were plump and cinnamon-y. Last but not least the iced tea was amazing -- getting a gallon is incredibly tempting. Next time we're in town we're going to try out their seafood options (the day we visited everyone was ordering fish so it made us curious). You have to visit this place!

Flounder sandwich with all the trimmings.

Service was quick prices were pretty average, but the flounder sandwich was easily the best item on the menu and a very lean and healthy option too

Small pork bbq dinner with potato salad, baked apples, and hushpuppies

Came here while visiting North Carolina - Friday at around 1pm. The line was not too long. Most of the people were getting food to-go. We decided to order the dinner which comes with 2 vegetables and hushpuppies (fried corn bread). I ordered a small pork bbq dinner with potato salad and the vegetable of the day, baked apples My boyfriend ordered a small pork bbq dinner with coleslaw and potato salad. We both got drinks (sweet tea). The pork bbq was flavorful and moist. Their bbq sauce is delicious. All of the vegetable sides were likewise delicious. I liked the baked apples and glad they offer it as a side of vegetable. The small dinner is (more than) enough for one person (good size portion). Prices reasonably. We ordered sweet tea for our drink and the sweetness is perfect. Service - Gentleman behind the order window/counter was nice and friendly. It took about 12 minutes from ordering until our number was called. Ambiance - well-lit, not loud; Spacious with plenty of tables. Located in a strip mall and no issues with parking. Definitely coming back the next time I visit NC and in the area.

Small BBQ plate with turnips and green beans. Totally fine though nothing amazing, would eat it in a pinch

Grew up in Durham, parents still live in Durham and have eaten at places near Hog Heaven for years (Picnic, Bullock's, Byrd's, Backyard BBQ Pit). Never thought much about Hog Heaven until my brother was in town with his new girlfriend who wanted 'home style cooking'. Bullock's and Byrd's were closed, BBQ Pit wasn't near us and Picnic looked too 'fancy' so to Hog Heaven we went. The place is pretty dingy and the air wasn't working well so not the best ambiance but everyone was getting takeout anyways. Service was quick and the folks were nice enough. Ordered five plates, a pint of chicken and dumplings plus extra okra and it came out to about 70 bucks. Not bad at all. As to the food 1. BBQ tasted pretty smoky but almost in a 'we added liquid smoke way'. Not terribly off-putting but still odd. Not much vinegar taste but the sauce was tasty and added some oomph. 2. Fried chicken -- it was pretty cold and suffered from being in a styrofoam container for the 10 min drive back to my folks' house but was seasoned well. 3. Chicken and dumplings -- excellent. By far the best thing we had and alone worth a trip. Pastry wasn't gummy, had a great ratio of chicken to pastry and was seasoned perfectly. Reminded both my wife and I of our grandmas in eastern NC. 4. Sides were mostly just ok except for the turnips which were canned but seasoned well, the corn and Lima beans which were tasty and the fried okra which was super bland. Hush puppies were fantastic Will definitely be back for some chicken pastry!

2 pc fried chicken with macaroni and cheese and fried okra

The restaurant was set clean... every time I go ... I have to clean my own table and chair... but they are always very busy... cashier today was not rushed or rude. She did charge me an up charge on my chicken meal but they were out of legs so I don't know why I was penalized... the food is excellent! Hot and delicious! They have some of the best tea in Durham

This is the way that BBQ should hit!!…read more We stopped in the "Shack" while visiting Durham. Having been huge fans of North Carolina style BBQ, we were not disappointed. My wife and daughter enjoyed the Pork Plate. By for me, I went with the two meat combo with Pulled pork and brisket. The pulled pork was spot on. It was perfectly smoked and almost melted in my mouth. With a touch of spicy vinegar sauce, I was gone to Carolina in my mind for the rest of the day. The brisket might have been some of the best I've ever had. It had a nice fat layer and was also "melt in your mouth" and juicy. The brisket didn't need any sauce at all. It was that good. The hushpuppies were the star at the table. My family considers themselves to be connoisseurs of hush puppies, and these were ranked in the top five. A respectable ranking from such a discriminating hushpuppy panel. The sides we sampled included collard greens, mac and cheese and BBQ beans. The collards and Mac and cheese were out of this world. I should have ordered a double serving of the collards. However, the beans were a huge disappointment. They were more like a bowl of sub-par chili than BBQ beans. If we return, they will not be selected. A great BBQ spot when you are in Durham. Highly recommend you stop by, if only to taste the brisket!

The meat was very tender and juicy, and I liked that the BBQ sauces and beans were flavorful without being overly sweet. The place has a cozy feel, with both indoor and outdoor seating. There is plenty of parking on the backside of the building, paid parking out front, and be careful not to park in the apartment spaces on the side...they sounded pretty serious about towing. I had made a reservation but it was probably unnecessary as it was pretty empty when we arrived (it was about 5pm on a Saturday.) The waitress brought a bottle of water to the table and took our drink order. And I know that this place is literally call it's a Southern thing but can I mention how much I dislike drinking out of mason jars? I ordered the chicken n biscuits, my husband got the country hamburger steak plate, my BiL got wings, and my SiL got the crabcakes. We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.

The line that forms before they open moves quickly providing good service. The service is farm style ambiance casual. Dampf Good BBQ is a popular Texas-style barbecue food truck in Cary, NC, known for its brisket, beef ribs, and homemade sausages, operating out of Phillips Farm. Dampf is the name of two brothers who run huge wood fired smokers. Dampf is open Thursday through Saturday, opening at 11:00 am and may often sell out before closing. There is online ordering available but there is no delivery services through Door Dash or UBER EATS at this time. The dining area is rusticly limited to casual dress covered outdoor space that offers picnic tables for seating at Phillips farm. EDIT #2: I am…read moreputting this at the top, if you care to read the whole story, continue on. If not, then the only part that matters is at the top. DO NOT EAT BBQ ANYWHERE ELSE. We finally had time to order the Dampf Feast. OMG, This puts bbq I've had in the motherland of bbq, Texas, in second place! Dampf has earned that Michelin star. The beef rib is lean yet tender and flavorful. Melt in your mouth but without the squishy fat in between the meat. It was cooked and rendered to perfection. The rub is delicious. The pork ribs are my new favorite! IF I could somehow marry them with the (and don't hate me for saying this) P.F.Changs Korean BBQ rib sauce, I'd never eat anything else ever again. The pork ribs had a ever so slightly sweet and tangy rub on them. Very tender, hardly any fat so again, a perfect cook and render. The brisket was a tad salty for my preference but oh my, it was cooked to utter perfection. It was melt in your mouth moist and so flavorful. The turkey was very flavorful and will make for excellent sandwiches tomorrow. It was moist, which for turkey, is a testament to their skill. I didn't try the sausages as it's not my thing, our kids loved them. Lastly the pulled pork was the absolute best I've ever had. Period and hands down. Lean, moist and just enough sauce to give flavor. The bbq baked beans were oh so yummy and with a little kick! The fire roasted veggies were done to perfection. Roasted and cooked yet crispy and packed with flavor. I got two and even the kids went back for more! I can say this, Dampf has earned every bit of that Michelin star. Sorry, no pics. There wasn't any time. The whole drive home I was tormented by the aromas wafting in from the trunk. The camera wasn't even a thought. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Post: I'm leaving this review purely based on one interaction and the complete and utter lack of respect or appreciation for the people who decide to support their business. We like Texas bbq. So much so that we order regularly from Terry Black's Barbecue in Texas so when someone on Next Door suggested dampf, we decided to try it. Initially we drove past it because it's a very non descript location but it looked promising being on the property of a farm. They serve out of a food truck so the line forms outside, not a big deal but this day was rather chilly, still, for Texas styled ribs, it's worth the cold. Because we have experience with a Texas styled ribs restaurant (brick and mortar) in PA that would often sell out, we checked the menu for anything crossed out. We checked for any notices indicating items unavailable. There were no such notices and nothing on the menu was crossed out. We got in line and waited. Ten minutes, then twenty and the line barely moved and most of that was due to patrons ahead of us in the line deciding to leave. After an hour, it just over that, someone came and advised that they've been sold out of beef ribs, pork ribs and brisket for 2 hours. Wow. Way to show respect for our time. Why not cross out those menu items? Even after that announcement, they didn't update their menu. I just don't think I can hand over my money to a business that doesn't respect my time or business. EDIT: I received a reply from Dampf and appreciate the courtesy of that reply. We will give them a try, perhaps using the online ordering to be certain we don't show up when something has been sold out.
