My husband and I both, despite being on the Gulf Coast where sweet, thick BBQ sauce reigns, were raised on good Carolina style with slaw. After all the reviews and other negative reviews and frustrations we decided to just find a close one on our journey north on 85. Several popped up, but we loved the raw, hole in the wall feel that screamed established and local favorite. We wanted to try bbq during our short visit to North Carolina and Hog Heaven definitely lives up to its name. Hog Heaven has a decent size parking lot, a drive-thru, and they accept cash/card. We shared a BBQ & Fried Chicken Combo with Baked Apples and Turnip Greens with an iced tea for $14.19 total and it was delicious. We asked for dark meat but accidentally received white meat by mistake (but it was so moist and flavorful especially for white meat). The barbecue was tangy, juicy, and incredibly soft. It had a unique seasoning that had a slight heat at the end. Turnip greens were savory and the baked apples were plump and cinnamon-y. Last but not least the iced tea was amazing -- getting a gallon is incredibly tempting. Next time we're in town we're going to try out their seafood options (the day we visited everyone was ordering fish so it made us curious). You have to visit this place! read more

We both got drinks (sweet tea). The pork bbq was flavorful and moist. Their bbq sauce is delicious. All of the vegetable sides were likewise delicious. I liked the baked apples and glad they offer it as a side of vegetable. The small dinner is (more than) enough for one person (good size portion). Prices reasonably. We ordered sweet tea for our drink and the sweetness is perfect. Service - Gentleman behind the order window/counter was nice and friendly. It took about 12 minutes from ordering until our number was called. Ambiance - well-lit, not loud; Spacious with plenty of tables. Located in a strip mall and no issues with parking. Carolina BBQ here is the best I have had in years. We were passing through and Yelp reviews were encouraging so we stopped. This humble joint is right off of the highway and easy to find. Locals on their lunch break show up in force at noon. All of us got pork bbq. But locals were digging into fried fish and chicken a lot too. Sides were uniformly good. Service was friendly. Everything is on styrofoam plates. The pork comes with a little container of extra vinegar based sauce. No other sauce is offered because you don't need it. This is Carolina bbq with salty vinegar slightly spicy goodness you experience down to your toes. And the fried okra is clearly made fresh. We had to wait for it and it was HEAVEN. Okra is so misunderstood, but if you have it here you will be enlightened. If you are driving across NC, forget the chains and stop at Hog Heaven. read more

Grew up in Durham, parents still live in Durham and have eaten at places near Hog Heaven for years (Picnic, Bullock's, Byrd's, Backyard BBQ Pit). Never thought much about Hog Heaven until my brother was in town with his new girlfriend who wanted 'home style cooking'. Bullock's and Byrd's were closed, BBQ Pit wasn't near us and Picnic looked too 'fancy' so to Hog Heaven we went. The place is pretty dingy and the air wasn't working well so not the best ambiance but everyone was getting takeout anyways. Service was quick and the folks were nice enough. Ordered five plates, a pint of chicken and dumplings plus extra okra and it came out to about 70 bucks. Not bad at all. As to the food 1. BBQ tasted pretty smoky but almost in a 'we added liquid smoke way'. Not terribly off-putting but still odd. Not much vinegar taste but the sauce was tasty and added some oomph. 2. Fried chicken -- it was pretty cold and suffered from being in a styrofoam container for the 10 min drive back to my folks' house but was seasoned well. 3. Chicken and dumplings -- excellent. By far the best thing we had and alone worth a trip. Pastry wasn't gummy, had a great ratio of chicken to pastry and was seasoned perfectly. Reminded both my wife and I of our grandmas in eastern NC. 4. Sides were mostly just ok except for the turnips which were canned but seasoned well, the corn and Lima beans which were tasty and the fried okra which was super bland. This place was fantastic. Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q offers daily specials, and I had the good fortune to visit on a Tuesday, which happens to be rib day. I was in for a treat--the ribs were on point, tender, with a great rub that blended perfectly with the sauce. They were some of the best ribs I've ever had. If you find yourself not in the mood for the daily special, I highly recommend the fried pork chop. It may well have been the best pork chop I have ever tasted. The pork chop is pounded thin, breaded, and fried to perfection. The meat was glistening and incredibly flavorful. I almost stole the rest from my son, but he threatened to take a hand if I tried! As for the sides, the mac and cheese was great, and the potato salad was superb. This was my first trip to Durham, and I rather stumbled upon this place, but if I am ever in town again, I will be sure to visit Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q again. Pulled Pork Plate (Large) with two sides. The pulled pork was delicious. It has a nice smoked flavor to it and was very juicy. The sauce was boss. It parked well with it. Fries: Typical fries and it was cold. Mac N Cheese: Nothing special, if you know what Mac N cheese taste like, I recommend you getting something else. What can be said of this BBQ dive? It is cheap, marginally more expensive than a typical fast food restaurant. I'm left scratching my head as the food could be better for not much more effort or money. The restaurant has awards along the wall from years past, so the owners know how to cook. I would suggest the restaurant add slightly more red pepper spice to their BBQ chop and then give it a 4 minute smoke for flavor. The vinegar based sauce would improve without the sugar added. When I passed this place while running an errand in Durham today, I made a point of going back to eat there when I was finished, I wish I could tell you I liked this place, because I really wanted to, but it just wasn't all that great. Now the place looked great from the outside; a unfancy, plain, hole in the wall like many of your best "Q" joints. Kind of a poor attitude. The food was so-so. The "Q" is not served "pulled" it is very finely chopped, almost minced. It's flavor was not bad, sort of peppery, and no options as to adding additional sauce. The Chicken and pastry had a good texture, but was way too salty. The "pulled pork" sandwich had a couple hush puppies on top, which was a nice touch, and they were pretty tasty. In short, the food was just ok and the poor attitude of the staff makes me think that this is not a place I would take out of town folkks to show them real old time NC BBQ. Five of us popped in to Hog Heaven for lunch on Monday. The BBQ and sauces were good but not spectacular. Our total bill was just under $50 but we didn't leave entirely full. I know that might sound odd and I can certainly afford to lose a few pounds, but I've never been to a BBQ place where I didn't have food left over. You really can't call this place a BBQ joint because it is too nice and clean inside - functional, but nice. They serve some really good food, and not just the chopped pork. The place is small, but there are dozens of tables, fairly close together, so it can get noisy at times. You place your order and pay at the front window (they also hava a drive thru), fix yor drink at the fountain, grab a seat, and the food will be brought to you - and usually pretty quickly for most items - the fried seafood takes longer. The chopped pork is typical Eastern NC BBQ - tender, not over chopped, and lightly sauced out of the kitchen - a touch of the vinegar-based sauce adds some nice kick. This is above average Eastern BBQ, not in the very elite class, but close.The slaw is a a touch sweet, wetter than I care for, and has bits of carrot in it - tends to mask the good flavor of the pork. The small plate is $6.75, large $7.35 - each with 2 sides. The Rib Plate (on Tuesday) is large, filled with falling off the bone meat. The sauce is thick and definitely on the sweet side. You get 2 sides and hush puppies with the plate for $7.25. The Fried Chicken is crispy with plenty of salt and pepper seasoning, really nice. The Fried Okra and Pintos are very good. The Fries are the ridged kind and really don't have much flavor - I'd pass on them, better things are available here. They also have some fried seafood items - shrimp, flounder - but I've yet to try them. The service here is excellent , friendly and attentive. You HAVE to try the fried chicken. I'm a 47-year-old southern woman and have had my fair share of delicious fried chicken in my life. This is some of the absolute best fried chicken there is. I had the fried chicken and pulled pork combination plate with fried okra and granny potatoes. The pork was the real deal--flavorful with a little kick. Very well seasoned and the different sauces on the table were a nice compliment. The pork was so good by itself actually, that you really don't need sauce to go with it. The fried okra was tasty and not greasy at all and the granny potatoes were cooked with onions and butter--a yummy side that went well with everything else I ordered. The hush puppies that come with every order were also light and not greasy. We sipped ours in some of the Country Crock butter provided at each table. My husband ordered the same exact lunch as I did but had the bbq chicken instead. He loved it. This was our first time at Hog Heaven, but will not be our last. read more
