They had to check when I asked questions regarding vegetarian options - Which brings me to my only quibble... Hubby really wanted to go to Hog Shack for early Fathers Day. He remembered wonderful BBQ meals there in the past. One of my adult children is vegetarian though. I thought Hog Shack might be able to cobble a plate of sides for the vegetarian. We weren't expecting pulled jackfruit or pulled tofu or other options offered by places such as Slims (Vancouver) or Patina (Port Coquitlam). Our expectations were set reasonably low. My daughter ended up ordering the tater tot's, but asked that they not include the brisket topping. She ordered corn bread and a side of cooked veggies. The cooked veggies never came. The tarot tots (sans the brisket) were charged at FULL PRICE! I ended up asking for the veggies to be removed from the bill (they didn't forget to charge for it) and asked why the tater tots weren't reduced in price to reflect that no brisket was included. The manager ended up giving me a small container of brisket - which is fine, because I paid for it lol!! The gator tots came to over $23!!! Yeah - I would expect a reduction in price or the brisket on the side. I still tipped on the original bill - I wasn't expecting happy with our servers. Overall, I wasn't expecting "vegetarian friendly" but I also wasn't expecting "vegetarian hostile" Keep this in mind - if someone in your party doesn't eat meat - go to Slims or Patina. (3.5/5) Despite how big this place is, it is often missed or unnoticed in Steveston village. A friend pointed out their all day happy hour from Monday to Thursday so we decided to check it out yesterday. Upon arrival, it was quiet and we were one of the few tables inside. For a group of four, we settled for quite a few items as we wanted variety. My friends also ordered the Hog Shack Caesar which is a Bourbon twist on a regular caesar. Apart from some standard cocktails, they also had additional happy hour beer/wine specials. For regular menu, we settled on the Jurassic platter to get a good variety as well as the brisket plate. Within the platter, the dino bones and the chicken leg stood out the most. The dino beef bones had good flavour and texture. To my surprise, the chicken was super moist and aromatic. The pork ribs and pulled pork were okay in our opinion. As for the sides, I always love corn bread so that didn't miss, but the other sides didn't impress me - I was especially hoping for yummy cole slaw but it was a bit bland. They had a feature side which was a fennel sausage pasta salad, but it came out piping hot which confused us. Unfortunately, the beef brisket plate was dry (as mentioned in the other reviews). I also picked the spring roll special which was a pleasant surprise as they were delicious! They came out piping hot and the filling was flavourful and not too salty. Unfortunately I did not snap a picture of the actual happy hour menu items (oops), but we ordered the brussel sprouts and pulled pork alfredo pasta. The portion size was excellent and I especially like the pasta and found the combination of pork and penne delicious. Needless to say, this was far too much food for 4 people and we left with an extra 2 people's worth of food. Hog shack is great to satisfy your cravings if you're in the area, but real Southern food lovers would likely find it hard to eat the bbq here. Finally made it back here after at least a decade. Everything was pretty much unchanged, other than the tablecloths. Parking is available on the surrounding streets. The interior is definitely American themed. Even though the building is close to the water, the windows face towards the street. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Staff are friendly but stretched out. The place was pretty busy, with people in the waiting area. Food prices have obviously gone up, but the quality is solid. The meat is well cooked but not burnt, and the portion size is pretty decent. Big Johnson plate - St. Louis ribs, brisket, dino bone (aka cow rib), pulled pork. Brisket was a bit dry. Pulled pork and ribs were quite good. Dino bone was honestly a bit disappointing, as there wasn't too much meat, and it's more like a small portion of 1 rib. Spanish rice pliaf - decent but could use more ingredients. I think it was only rice with some diced onions and carrots. Mac & cheese - pretty tasty. Burnt ends - brisket ends. They are definitely slightly burnt, but not inedible. These sell out early for some reason. Guess they're popular. I've been wanting to try this place for years but never got around to it. A friend suggested here for dinner and off we went. It was fairly busy when we were here on a Saturday night. Good thing we had a reservation for our party of 6. There are two round tables which can fit 6 people. Otherwise it's waiting for tables to open up to form bigger tables. It did take a longer than usual (according to friends who have been here before) to get our food. Apparently the kitchen was busy with take out/delivery orders. The menu looked good with plenty of bbq items and even Korean fried chicken (KFC). Huh? I guess everyone loves KFC. I saw gumbo on the specials menu and just had to try that. It was a Turkey and sausage gumbo with rice. It was not what I had in mind when it arrived. It was thicker and darker looking than the usual gumbo. Despite the look, it was very tasty. I did wish it had more liquid. There was plenty of meat and I thought there were pulled pork and brisket besides the Turkey and sausage. I guessed it was so heavily seasoned I couldn't tell what meat I was eating. Not served with any sides. I also tried the brisket sandwich which came with either fries or salad. I requested for the moist/fatty meat so that it would not too dry. It was a generous serving of brisket with slaw and pickle in the sandwich. Some parts were chunks of fatty meat and others were lean and moist. I was it was melt in your mouth brisket. My friends like the Dino ribs which were really big ribs. They also like the pulled pork. Another friend had the 1/2 lb brisket and it was a bit dry. The server got the kitchen to re-do it and added sauce to the new plate. Kudos to the staff for wanting to make it better. A friend suggested this place for dinner. Although the pricing was very good the food didn't meet up to my expectations of BBQ meat. The restaurant was 1/3 to 1/2 full and was somewhat busy. However, our food took a long time to arrive. We were a party of 6. I ordered the 1/2 lb beef brisket and it was very dry. The BBQ sauce that they drizzled on top was nothing special. I did bring it up to the server about the brisket being dry and she tried to make up for it by remaking it and adding more sauce but I am guessing it came from the same slab of brisket so it was still dry but better. B ordered the smoke sausage flight. The sausage was very tasty but again it was also nothing too wow. B also ordered a beer and the whisky flight. I went to the Hog Shack for dinner date on a Wednesday. It looks like this place has won many awards as I noticed lots of ribbons displayed on the wall. We ordered a brisket sandwich, Korean fried chicken tacos, and the combo number 5 platter. Each dish came with sides as well. The chicken thigh and ribs were soft and marinated perfectly. I was a big fan of the yam fries too. The tacos were loaded and the burger itself was enough food for dinner. Needless to say, we ordered way too much food. Came in on a Sunday night with a deep craving for American-style bbq. We got the Dino (beef) ribs and a 1/2 order of the pork ribs, each coming with 2 sides. Pork ribs were flavourful and tender but the beef ribs I will say were quite dry and I personally found an overwhelming vinegar flavour on them- not my favourite. Sides were okay. We decided to risk it for the side of the day, which were hush puppies. They weren't my personal favourite as the cornmeal tasted a little stale to me, but my partner enjoyed this side. Corn bread was quite dry and crumbly which was only helped slightly by the side of butter. The yam fries are what you expect them to be, comes with a side of chipotle mayo and lastly the creamed corn was probably what saved the meal. We ordered a pina colada (not pictured) to hold us off while we waited for the food. Again, pretty mid. Flavourful but definitely too sweet. This spot was always featured in all my research so I decided to try it first since it s not far from where I live. The staff there were friendly and helpful. I ordred a 1/2 lb of beef brisket and I got it super fast : The slices of meat were thicker than I expected( usually I prefer thinner piece of brisket) , not much juicy and full of bbq sauce which I was expecting to be on the side. Mother's Day in Steveston could have been the typical eggs Benedict but we decided to check out Hog Shack for BBQ. Plus they had plenty of patio space so we had an instant table outside. Having lived in Texas with high expectations for southern style BBQ, we craved the brisket and Dino ribs. It did not disappoint. Flintstone-worthy beef ribs (one could have tilted the car) was massive. Beautiful crust, not fatty, very lean. Took 3 people to try to gnaw it down. 2.5 strips of brisket was a tad small considering the plate was touted as the Caveman. Nice cornbread muffin and crispy hand cut fries rounded out the meal shared with 3 people. It was the perfect amount. Oh and we had the catfish bites for an appetizer. Hog Shack offers 20% off pick up orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. We decided to take advantage of this offer. Bad decision. We ordered the Big Johnson Plate and a cup of chili. The chili was decent, but we had to dip the corn bread that came with it in the chili as it was too dry. The Big Johnson Plate was a HUGE disappointment: *St. louis side ribs were so dry. *Dino bone - the meat was so hard and I couldn't even rip it off the bone! I believe this was not cooked enough as the meat should have been more tender and almost off the bone. *Pulled pork - not flavorful and was too dry. We dumped all of it in the chili to give it more taste. *Beef brisket - was ok but too hard. Despite the 20% discount, the bill wasn't cheap at all considering the kind of quality we got. As a restaurant specializing in southern BBQ, this was a huge disappointment. I will not be giving them a 2nd chance. I would have given them 1-star if they didn't have the 20% discount. read more

4 of us went to the hog shack on a Thursday night. Not full but busy. I had the half ribs and pulled pork. Ribs were dry rubbed and fantastic. I had the cheesy corn which was the best I ever tasted. The corn was not soggy and felt like it was fresh off the cob. The sauce was the way I love it: thick and creamy with no signs of oil in it. The corn bread is worth asking for or ordering. I thought the pulled pork was a little on the cheap side but with all of the other things it was the right size. The other three meals were great and no one complained. Let's just say this week I had to go try it and I've never gotten into my car so quickly before. * Birria de res ($19.95) ~ oh my gosh these are game changer! If you ever see them post that they have it here for their special... RUN! Because it was so worth it! Comes with 3 loaded birria tacos and ultra delicious and rich consommé. The rice pairing was fantastic and also outstanding with the rich sauce base! I mean it was so flavourful you can definitely taste the flavours and spices used in the dish. The taco itself was loaded with meat and cheese! The rice was flavourful on its own but with the consommé it was chefs kiss! I've never craved such a dish so badly before. Please make this a regular menu item . * Bbq bacon cheese burger ($17.89), also added Caesar salad for side ($1.50) ~ the burger is making me speechless. It was huge! I do have a soft spot for Southern BBQ every now and then, and while I can't speak to the place's authenticity, I can say what I had here really hit the spot! The catfish bites are deep fried in a cornmeal batter, which adds a nice texture to them, and my Apple Jack cocktail was both sweet and quite affordably compared to regular Vancouver prices. But the star was really the main mean. I split a Big Johnson plate with a friend, and it easily feeds two despite not being sold as a two-person meal. All the meats were delicious and slathered in richly flavoured BBQ sauces, from the giant ribs to the tender brisket and rich pulled pork. I got the cornbread side, which was delicious (maybe a tiny bit sweeter than I like) and paired extremely well with the meat, and the yam fries were pretty good as well! I'd love to come back and try another plate and more of the sides - the fact that you get two sides even with a regular main is great. This is one of those places where simple, unpretentious food is really given the chance to stand on its own and just be delicious. They give you little wetwipes that say "Don't be afraid to make a mess", and I think that encapsulates the fun about this kind of place and food - it's messy, tasty, basic, hearty food that leaves you full and satisfied. read more

Pulled pork, baby back ribs, beef ribs, chicken and brisket are some of their popular offerings. You can buy items a la carte, but you can also opt for combinations. for father's day dinner, i thought, why not! its my day, so why not patronize my neighbourhood meat shack and indulge in what dads like best! MEAT!! got my daughter to walk over and reserve a table ahead...she was told 1.5hr wait. i get there, see several empty tables, call from the sidewalk about the chances of getting a table in 5 mins...was told, sure...come right in!! ( so weird ) could it be they discriminated or profiled my daughter as she looks young? biz is still biz... anyhow, went got seated and ordered. to start, we tried the calamari. then we tried the whole rack of ribs, beef brisket plate ( piled high as the menu says) , 1 pc smoked chicken ( but came out we got 2 leg and thighs in an order). 2 sides to an order, so we did corn bread, coleslaw, sauted vegs , yam fries and reg fries. first off, we were given plates to use. they were stacked and we had to hand them out. upon doing so, i saw that the plates were dirty and not washed properly. dirty murky water was still visible around the 2nd and 3 rd plates. it was literally a small brownish puddle. ewww. i told the server to replace then immediately. she offered a weak sorry, and got us new plates. food came...calamari was average. they cheap out by serving more tentacles than calamari rings. the breading was ok. nothing to rave about this dish. brisket was excellent. tender and smoked to perfection. juicy , yummy, and melt in your mouth, but "piled" high as the menu stated. u only get 4 slices. the ribs were awesome. smoked to tenderness, seasoned with dry rub to give the mest a good crust, and then basted with bbq sauce. boom! fantastic. the chicken was so good as well. crisp skin, and juicy meat. the texture was great. you can savour the aromatic lemon rub that they used for smoking and marinade. yam and reg fries were done well. extra crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. seasoned correctly, and came with their own dip. coleslaw was good as well. tasted freshly made as opposed to lurking inside a container was days like kfc's one. corn. read was moist and huge, but lacked corn kernels inside. lastly, i tried the kansas city styke bbq sauce on the table. it was the lamest excuse for bbq sauce ive ever tasted, and they actually make and bottle this sauce for sale. it was plain as can be. even kraft bbq sauce tasted better. there was no kick, the flavors were weak, the spices lacking, it was a complete excuse for bbq sauce. ive had southern and texas bbq, and have tried their sauces...what they were offering cant come close. i enjoyed the food and we had leftovers to bring home. ambiance was great, you really felt you were in a bbq house. nice decors and interiors. abundance of craft beers to choose from as well. the biggest negative thing was the service. no discount given for the dirty plates...the manager did not even come over to apologize, nothing! it was shrugged off. i noticed the table beside me, a 6 yr okd kid spilled his water glass on the table, an older server came and wipe the water with a rag, but her face looked pissed. she glared at the kid who looked down and kept on sinking lower and lower on his seat. no smiles or reassurances...just stared him down. even the mom couldnt believe it and apologized to the server to placate her. wow!! if this was the keg, my meal wouldve been free being given filthy plates like that. and kids will always be kids...staring down a kid is a big NONO!! restaurant industry is all about customer service!!! anyhow, it will be some time before i give them another try. although to be fair, their food is better than memphis blues hands down! memphis has become a mass produced piled of stale food. cheers!! happy eating! read more

The room has high ceilings and it is a bright airy room. They are very good about implementing covid policies. The staff all wore masks, there were barriers between the tables and there is hand sanitizer at the entrance. On the table there is a small plastic sheet advising customers of procedures that are to be adhered to - you can only get up to use the washroom, no standing at other tables, 1 1/2 hour limit to have your meal etc. The service was good. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the food. My husband had wine with his meal and I ordered a hurricane. My drink was very weak and I could barely taste any alcohol. It was pretty tasteless and it was $8.95. We shared an order of popcorn shrimp as an appetizer. It was a decent size portion and it was okay, nothing memorable but okay. Entrees come with a choice of 2 sides. My husband ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs with corn bread and yam fries and I ordered a ¼ chicken with corn bread and yam fries. Their meat is smoked and then brushed with barbecue sauce. The sides of corn bread and yam fries were very good but the ribs were very dry. The chicken although nice and moist had an overwhelming taste of the smoke and seasoning that was used. I did not enjoy it at all. It is not good value for the money. They are seriously overpriced. At $30.95 for a rack of ribs I could have this meal in a nice restaurant and have ribs that are not overcooked. Overall it was very disappointing and we would not return. read more

hmm where to start. I ordered the burnt ends the wife ordered brisket tacos. The burnt ends were hard and almost like a jerky texture couldn't get my fork in some pieces, smothered in bbq sauce to hide the failure. The wife's brisket tacos had the same meat that was served on flour tortilla, her salad was fresh and good tho. I had baked beans as a side along with cornbread. The beans were very good surprisingly but the cornbread was a joke hard and very stale tasting. They need to send that cornbread to Ukraine and use it to combat Russian troops. Service was ok and the atmosphere has a decent feel. Given burnt ends are a art and few people actually do them justice but this attempt was pure fail. Had a craving for some bbq meats before summer ends and hog shack came to mind. As it gets colder it was easier to find parking at steveston. After looking at the menu, we decided to get an appy to share and the Big Johnson Platter (brisket, beef rib, pork ribs and pulled pork) and play by ear depending on how much food there is. With the platter you get to choose two side and we got the cornbread and yam fries. I've been having a streak of bad calamari and decided to give this place a try. Calamari was the best I've had lately (3.5/5). It had a light batter with a slight crunch. It was seasoned well and came with tartar sauce and chipotle/sriracha mayo as a dip. The chipotle/sriracha mayo is the perfect match to the calamari. Big Johnson Platter (4/5): This platter consists of one piece of brisket, one beef rib, 3-4 pork ribs and some pulled pork. Of the meats, the brisket was my least favourite and my favourite was the pulled pork. Overall, they were tasty with no complaints. This platter definitely can fill two unless you're super hungry then you might be better off having it all to yourself or pair up with someone that has a small appetite. The cornbread soft and moist but the yam fries were drenched from the sauces that were on the meat. I would have preferred it to be placed on a side dish to maintain its crispness. I'd come back for food but the service was a little offputting 'cause the servers kept on asking if we were done. I felt rushed to leave when the places wasn't even full. My Family came here for a big celebration and thought the reviews were decent and some good ribs would hit the spot. I'm not sure why there are good reviews here, the food was slow to come for not a busy restaurant (and we now know why). We ordered 2 orders of Allan's mammoth platter and was quite disappointed considering the price of the platter. The ribs and brisket were mediocre at best and dry at worst, not juicy nor mouth watering at all! The Chicken tasted like BBQ seasoning was just slathered on and no taste inside thereafter. I had the pork chop special while my partner had the elusive burnt ends brisket and we were quite impressed by the flavor. I always try pork chop if i ever see it on a resto menu because it is rarely on there compared to steak and i like it a lot. This place has one of the best, the gravy had a great complexity to it and the pork chop was done to perfection, nicely seared on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Since I was craving fish & chips, that is what I ordered. Seemed strange to order it at a BBQ place, but that is what I and two others in our group did. I thought that it was pretty good. I had the 1 piece for $11. 2 pieces would have been $14. Our aunt said it was no comparison to Pajo's. My wife tried their Wild West Coast Salmon for $17. The wild salmon was served with vegetables and Spanish rice. She enjoyed her order too. Atmosphere was 4 stars. Service was 4 stars. Food was 3 stars. Chances of returning here are good. The food was better than the last time but the service is crap. We're all pretty ticked that we have to pay 15% when we didn't even get any service. Like before, it was about hour and a half before I even got my food. The waitress was super slow and wasn't friendly at all. Didn't seem like she even wanted to be there. Been here once before but vowed never to come again mediocre food and bad service. However due to Mothers Day and an impromptu lunch in Steveston we ended up here. Place wasn't jammed packed so we got a table quickly. But it was all downhill after that. We ordered a shrimp salad, 2 chicken salad sandwiches and a pasta dish. Waited at least 45 minutes for our food. When it arrived the chicken salad sandwiches were just on plain bread, soggy and not worth the wait. The pasta was over seasoned, and we couldn't believe the salad took 45 minutes to make! To top it off the older waitress who was there the 1st time I tried this place was still as unfriendly and as rude as ever. Won't ever come back here. read more

The brisket was fine, but dry around the edges. The pulled pork also fine, not stellar. The BBQ sauce was spicy and did a good job covering up from the lack in the meats. I do enjoy the beer selection. And that is nice. We had a bit of entertainment when a mouse ran between two tables, and to the kitchen. The server explained that they come in to the restaurant only in the winter and that is a bit too often for me. I may be back in the summer. read more

Randomly, a bunch of us off Twitter met up in my neck of the woods to have some good ol' fashioned barbecue amidst the busy Steveston village at lunch time. Billed as "Steveston's first and only BBQ and casual cook house", I finally tried their meat and fixings. We ordered the four person "Allan's Mammoth Platter" sharing it between five people. With an extra person, we struggled to finish the entire order, but we did. Defiantly, we managed to clean our plates of the baby back ribs, St. Louis side ribs, dino ribs, chicken quarters, pulled pork, and brisket. Not only did we get three kinds of ribs, and assorted other meats, but also six side dishes. For our six, count 'em six, mammoth side dishes, we went with all potato selections. Two servings of hand-cut French fries and yam fries along with potato wedges and mashed potatoes. It was a carb overload. Don't be fooled by the platter description. It says it serves "four and a bit". It's more than enough to comfortably feed six people. Easy, no problem. I thought all the sides were all pretty standard and serviceable. It's hard to screw up the staples. Our non platter friends indulged in brisket and pulled pork varieties of lunch dishes. We were so ridiculously full afterwards. It was a fun, filling time. The staff was nice and friendly. The Steveston location is far off for most, but only a ten minute drive to me. I love Steveston and it's small, friendly, kitschy charm. A barbecue joint amongst all the seafood, fish and chip places is a warm welcome. read more

I purchased a groupon for hog shack cook house for 12$ last week! I ventured out to Stevenson with my boyfriend to put the groupon to use! It was late in the afternoon on a Friday when we went, it was quiet not many people in the joint . We ordered a prawn appetizer, which was actually delicious. It was cooked with tomato sauce and herbs and spices. for dinner we ordered; My boyfriend ordered the Cajun chicken penne pasta and i ordered the blackened cod salad both were flavourful and really good. I was surprised, but honestly it is worth it esp because of the groupon. Its not pricey but its not cheap. An average dish costs about 14-15$ Its a nice area..along the water, esp in the summer. This place has a great menu selection, especially with regards to the kind of BBQ you can get. There are lots of platters for one and some to share. My friend and I shared a Big Johnson Plate and was surprised that it isn't meant for two because you do get so much. There was pulled pork, pork ribs, beef brisket, and beef ribs AND two sides of your choosing (we chose cornbread and yam fries). All the food was really good though my personal favourite was the beef brisket. I also really liked the restaurant itself with its wooden interior and high ceilings; one of the walls is a window/patio area which allows for a lot of natural light and a view. The wall around the bar was decorated with beer branding. They had a broader selection of alcohol than I had anticipated. The service was quick and friendly. read more

Had the 2 piece smoked chicken and 1/2 rack St Louis ribs. Tad better than Memphis Blues but no way value for $. The chicken was juicy but felt that the marinade process should've been longer as I felt only the skin on the outside had flavour and didn't penetrate the chicken. The ribs was on the drier side with not a lot of meat. Came with 2 sides. Had the yam fries which was cooked well and crispy. Was really hungry and was expecting good things. Wasn't bad but not outstanding either for the price you pay about $20/dish. read more

This place is super adorable and so delicious! My hubby and I came here on Sunday at around 1 for lunch, and we were seated right away. There were so many choices to choose from, but we settled on the Big Johnson's Plate so we can get a sample of everything. We also got two free sides of cornbread and seasoned vegetables. The food came out very quickly and the portion was gigantic! I am normally not a huge fan of pulled pork, but I was beyond impressed! It was so flavorful and the meat melted in my mouth right away. And that cornbread tasted heavenly! The ribs and bones were cooked to perfection, and the meat just slid off the knife. Absolutely amazing, and I'm super impressed! Can't wait to come back again in the summer so we can sit outside and enjoy the food and the beautiful view. read more
