Coming into the hotel I was excited because it looked really well put together and nice. But then it all went down hill. My partner and I stayed for 3 nights. And didn't sleep one of those nights. Because of these reasons: The walls are so thin you can hear everything everyone's doing in the building. Literally. That mixed with drunk people in the rooms next to you staying up till 4 am being loud. Apparently they didn't see all the signs in the room warning you to keep conversations to a low. Anytime someone would open and close their door, our loose door would also slam. That would happen at all hours of the night as well. And the fact that the ac is communal. You don't have your own temp control in your room. No it's I'm the hallway and if you want your room and the whole building a certain temp then you had to call the front desk. It was set to 63 in the cool fall weather.. We tried to call the front desk to help with all those things but they don't answer. Which is weird considering when we arrived the man at the front desk was on the phone for 20+ minutes while we stood there waiting to be checked in. Then to top it all off, there's a garage truck that came every two days right outside our window with loud beeping etc at 5:50am. And our toilet didn't work half the time and also our shower stopped working. We explained all this to the front desk while finally leaving and she said she'd have the manager call me by the end of the day to "resolve" it but of course I never got a call then saw they charged the wrong card. I understand this hotel is historic and redone but that just simply makes it miserable to stay in these days. And for prices that match new hotels, it's fully not worth it. read more

Didn't stay here, but wish we had. The food was excellent, especially the fish. The gnocchi and tofu were very popular with my wife and sister. The ambiance in the bar section was very nice, and the bar downstairs seems like it would be cozy and fun when open. Recommend if visiting Grass Valley and Nevada City. read more

Pros: Quaint. That's all. Cons: Worst run hotel I've been in for a long while. DOUBLE CHARGES AND NO RETURN CALL FROM HOTEL MANAGEMENT!! Nobody to answer the phone for guests - you have to leave a message. TINY room with zero amenities: no fridge, no mini bar, NO room temperature controls (you have to leave a message for the staff asking for the AC to be turned off bc NOBODY ANSWERS THE PHONE), a dog blanket given to you as extra bedding to keep warm, no electronic outlets to charge phones except in the bathroom, no in-room coffee/tea maker (you have to search hotel for "complimentary coffee in another building and then you're out of luck bc the guests in that bldg have depleted the coffee, LITERALLY NO ROOM FOR LUGGAGE! Queen bed is actually a FULL SIZE BED. Not enough parking spaces for guests. Stay somewhere else read more

Stopped by midafternoon to grab a bite to eat and check out the hotel. Small bites and drinks were available and did not disappoint. We opted for non-alcoholic beverages, chips and guacamole (which was the bomb), crispy brussel sprouts and brisket tacos. Got to love the architecture and vibe. read more

My husband and I stopped in to the Holbrooke for drinks and dessert on our date night, and were met with a delightful experience too good not to share. Although it was a busy Saturday evening, we were seated right away in the beautifully revamped dining room (this is NOT the aging hotel of my youth!). Staff were warm and knowledgeable, helping us pick the perfect cocktail (HIGHLY recommend the Old Aztec. Dangerously delicious), as well as recommending just the right dessert. The hotel is beautiful, but the staff is truly what makes the Holbrooke 5-stars. We are staying at the hotel for a week, and on Monday a big snowstorm hit Grass Valley and we had nearly 3 days of no electricity anywhere in the city. In spite of this, their staff went above and beyond to keep everyone comfortable and safe. Those of us still here have been provided with coffee and tea, shovels to dig our cars out, games to play, and meals with what was available in the kitchen. They are truly rockstars and we can't recommend staying here enough. Under normal circumstances, the Golden Gate Saloon has fabulous food and drinks and the rooms are spacious and well-appointed. There are lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance to explore as well. We'll definitely be making this our go-to place to stay when we're in Grass Valley! I'm very picky with hotels and generally like high end, modern so was a little concerned about what to expect with the Holbrooke. Turns out it's fantastic. Yes it's old but love the updated design while staying true to its history. Very warm and inviting. Room was large and totally comfortable. Food at the hotel restaurant was excellent and staff were all warm and friendly. Will definitely return when we come back to Grass Valley. This hotel is pretty darn amazing! My other half and I stayed there for two nights during the beautiful holiday season. The room was beautiful and comfortable, the hotel was stunning, and the town is uniquely amazing. The only drawbacks are that the front desk is not adequately staffed, but when it is, the attendants are amazing and so knowledgeable and kind. Shout out to Danny one of the nicest people we have ever met. And the parking situation at the hotel is subpar. Street parking is hard if not impossible to come by at night, and the parking lot is not only for a hotel guest but restaurant and bar guests so it fills up easily and can take quite some time to get a parking spot when coming back in the evening from being out. The fact that the amenities fee covers parking is somewhat of a joke. The general manager did make the situation right to the best of her abilities but if you care about having to sit in your car, waiting to park after a long day for quite some time, then you might want to stay somewhere else locally. read more

Beautiful on the inside, gorgeous. However, it's 9:30 at night, we are early to bed/early to rise people and we can hear the music (presumably from the bar) clear as day. Even with ear plugs in, I can feel the base. Very unfortunate. Going to be a rough night. Update: music turned down at 10 (after we called to inquire). This is on the dinner and the so called miracle Christmas decoration's down stairs. The so called miracle room was horrible. like a motel 6 decorated room We went up stairs for dinner. It was bad. The salmon was good but small and not much with it. I had the Bolognese , will there attempt. It was 98% noodles not even a tablespoon of meat (short ribs) more like a teaspoon of meat and a teaspoon of sweet tomato paste for the sauce. One small pice of carrot for $38 should have gone to Sergio's and had the lunch salmon , paste and salad for $18 and bigger too. read more

Amenity fee? what amenity? wgt room, extra security?? a pool....Wait, i know....hot and cold running water with electricity? thanks for that...I parked my own car....even asked if they were gonna wash it..NOPE! So what was the amenity? I'm thinking it's a surprise and maybe it's packed in our luggage secretly for our discovery later on? nope...Nothing....Wait...it's gets better...No breakfast till 0900.....and what a treat that was.....Dry to the bone egg frittata!....Oh hell, the scones really were pretty good....and the coffee was excellent.....So hence the extra star...Find another place...Maybe come back for a beer and sit at the bar......but that's about it...... read more

Went for appetizers & drinks on the patio. Really elegant experience, they provided blankets for us and there was space heaters everywhere. Service was a little slow but they were very slammed it allowed us to chat and catch up. Really enjoyed the Brussels & amazing selection of wine. On November 20th 2022 our family stayed at Holbrooke Hotel. This beautiful 150 year old Hotel is a must in Grass Valley. This review is on the room only ( room # 2 ). Bed and pillows were comfortable no issues sleeping. Location is excellent with a balcony facing the Main Street. Remodel was nicely done. Also loved the hotel lobby, bar and our son loved the vintage elevator. We will be returning again. read more

Beautiful restoration, and clearly well managed. We were impressed by the COVID protocols, and dined out side in the patio to live music. Very delighfult evening, great food. Unlike some of the other restaurants, this hotel/ restuaruant makes masks mandatory for staff and guests.... not like the idiots down the street who have anti mask signs in their windows, riffing about "personal freedom." read more

The hotel staff was friendly and the decor was a pleasant contrast from the rest of the town. The room was clean and the noise didn't travel from the downstairs. There was some noise coming from a neighbor but someone must have alerted hotel staff because they came quickly to inform the person they were causing a disturbance. The only real complaint I had was that the food menu while appetizing on paper could be executed a little better. My wife and I both thought the tri tip on two occasions was overly salty and the chicken was a little undercooked. If they just tighten up the quality the food would have been 5 stars. While I get that it's a boutique hotel, I would still appreciate a tv in the room. I would stay here again if in grass valley. read more

What can I say. What an amazing place. First the hotel is beautiful. They did such an amazing job combining class, authenticity and charm speaks to the history of Grass Valley/ Nevada County here. When you're in an old town, you seek that gold-miner-vibe. It's tastefully done, and absolutely not corny or gimmicky in the least. The staff is incredible. We're locals, but our home was evacuated to the fires. Tania (sp?) was swift to help, and made our accommodations quickly. Despite her being new there, she did the best she could in such crazy circumstances. Olivier (manager) checked in with us, and also helped us with our animals. He also called in his bar and kitchen staff so people could eat on a night where service wasn't usually offered. You felt understood, taken care of and respected. The staff would greet you and be so kind. Quinn (front desk) was incredibly helpful by offering my 85-year-old grandmother an extra 30 minutes to get her things and check out accordingly. They also offered the lobby to us in order to get our next move planned out. When it comes to hospitality and acting quickly, I imagine just even a relaxing stay would be just as equally valued to the team at the Holbrook. Great job everyone! read more

We are locals and I really wanted to love the re-opening of the historic Holbrooke. We booked a room, had dinner downtown Mill st, and finished with pretty good cocktails at the Holbrooke that we took back to our room. Booking was pretty easy online, check in simple at desk (minus my card declining 3 embarrassing times because the expiration date wasn't inputed correct. Parking was close and available. We ended up with a room in the back Purcell house. It was really cool to step into that part of history. I've never been in that building before. There was a group of folks playing games on patio table. It was nostalgic. The historical pieces of many years passed were all throughout the building as we walked the hall and stairs to our upstairs room. The upgrades were really made with preserved pieces at the heart of project. Our room was tiny. A giant comfy bed with an empty Oak clothing hutch and large sink foot from bed, and in the bathroom was a cute mini deep claw foot tub/shower and toilet. The hard wood flooring and choice of bathroom wall textures were beautiful. There was no tv. No coffee maker. There was an android iPad meant to contact for guest services it seemed. But that did not work and sure would have been nice to have option to log into some sort of tv services too since it's the only device in room. We enjoyed dinner downtown and returned to Hotel. We grabbed cocktails at the beautiful bar and took them to exterior patio which has always been nice, but now it's really a step up spot. It's filled with tables and fire pits. We sat for a bit and headed back to room. Now dark, I realized the door isn't sealed or properly framed in and you can see the entire frame of door shining from hall Light blasting through while you're trying to fall asleep. But the worst part, we fell asleep cold, and it only got colder as the night got longer. We both had wished we just stayed home. If I even moved a leg, the bedding was ice cold. So we both curled up and didn't move much to retain as much heat as we could. There was no heat source for us to control in the room & it the cold air was coming through the vent on ceiling and through the door frame. It was terrible. I couldn't get out of bed fast enough the next morning. I immediately got dressed, shoes, socks, jacket, pants, and out to sun to warm up. It was warmer outside. We checked out hours early. I seen the thermostat locked in hall upon leaving set to 63. That's nuts. No wonder we froze. We paid almost 300$ for a tiny little freezer box room that didn't even have a tv or vanity area for one to get ready. It was not worth the $ at all, and I won't be recommending the stay for friends or family visiting. The ambience and upgrades are absolutely gorgeous and of decent quality. We will certainly come back to check out the Chefs skills too! The preserved history is by far my favorite. But the lack of in room amenities, and terrible nights rest because of locked thermostat setting in Hall and no in room heat/cool options was not worth the price for me. Super bummed, and ready for a nap since I was up all throughout the night freezing. read more

We are locals who went to the Holbrook at least three times a week for lunch or dinner. It was our favorite place. Now, the renovation is spectacular, but we were extremely disappointed in the food and the menu selections. We went with our son and wife, my daughter in law sent her meal back twice and finally just didn't eat it. Of our four meals, no one finished their dinner. We need a menu more fir for Grass Valley, not San Francisco. Very disappointed. read more

Our anniversary was made complete by our stay at the Holbrooke. The King room #8 was perfect in every way right down to the clawfoot tub and luxurious bedding. It was so refreshing to open our window and feel fresh air. This hotel is so rich in history. We loved every new and old detail. Drinks and dinner at the Saloon was fantastic thanks to Amber who went out of her busy way for us. Great beer selection that paired well with all of the delicious appetizers. Nicole at the front desk was so helpful and answered ALL of my questions. For our bike riding adventure we picked up a picnic for 2 at the BackPorch Market thanks to the hotel referral, again spot on. I just can't find anything wrong with this place!! Well worth the 3 hour drive from our home town. We will definitely be back to check out the new bar opening downstairs! read more

I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here and it was NOT the experience I was promised. I was told the family style dinner would serve up to 6 people... the platters maybe served 4 people and the side dishes served 1 person (if that). My guests left starving and went to Taco Bell and had a better experience via drive thru. We had 56 people (including 2 kids) and everyone left complaining they were hungry and the food was gross. The beef was undercooked and the chicken was dry. The rice was also dry and the roasted potatoes were mostly garlic chunks. The mashed potatoes the beef came on/with was the littlest amount, not enough to even scoop with a spoon. I am BEYOND embarrassed!! Not only that, but some of the wedding party was also charged a ridiculous amount of money for a 2-night stay, not worth it. Along with that, I was charged for a "romantic getaway" for a gift a guest sent me. I will say the bartenders were amazing, quick, and so sweet. The rooms were clean, and the hotel staff was awesome!! The Holbrooke did end up giving my guests the discounted rate that was promised to the wedding party, they also reversed the gift charge for the "romantic getaway" that was gifted to me. The staff went out of their way to make those things right. Thank you, Holbrooke Hotel. Overall, the hotel is beautiful and clean, but I would never recommend having a rehearsal dinner or big event with "family style" platters. They do NOT serve enough food and it is very overpriced for the quality you get. read more

The Holbrooke Hotel is a gem. We stayed in a room overlooking Main Street with a balcony. The room has amazing details with all vintage touches that take you back in time, while also remaining clean and modern. It was incredibly beautiful. The hotel staff was so friendly and welcoming. They accommodated all requests, even when we decided to switch our breakfast from on the patio to in our room (as it started raining). They brought it up and it was so nice! Also, the food was incredible!!! read more
