Don't go to Holston's Kitchen Morristown. I couldn't believe it, they make you buy the chocolate cake or they won't sing happy birthday to the birthday girl. I'm not a cheapskate but the bill was already $178 for 4 of us. We made it perfectly clear it was my wife's birthday so she told us how great their birthday singer was and also how great the chocolate cake is and that was the last we heard about it because our daughter had birthday cake waiting at home. In all the years we've been going there we have never been disappointed until that evening. Oh and by the way, the food was terrible, the potatoes were cold and we had to send them back to be thrown in the microwave and the steaks weren't much better, and they had admittedly a new bar tender to try out on us, needless to say the drinks sucked, but I was very hungry so I just dug in and overlooked it. They must have changed owners because there was nothing about the meal that was acceptable, but I wasn't going to ruin my wife's birthday party by walking out. We really wanted to like this place but based on reviews didn't have our hopes up too high. The atmosphere is great, everything else not so much. We waited at the bar for a table, drinks were good but bartender less than friendly. Waitress was friendly but not very attentive. My husband ordered a burger and no temp was asked. The ambiance is great, classy with a slightly rustic look. We were seated promptly and our waitress was nice. We ordered chicken fajitas and grilled salmon (the mango chutney didn't make an appearance). Our food was very tasty and hot. Our tea was warm (had to ask for ice) but service was good. The raspberry cheesecake was one of best I have eaten. We rated it four stars because our service could have been better. Our server had too many tables to cover (short on wait staff, maybe). My husband and I came here today for the first time to celebrate my hubby's birthday - Aslan greeted us immediately with a welcoming smile and a friendly hello ! She also was our server - we were provided such great service from this lovely lady ! The food was absolutely delicious even the side salad was amazing and well proportioned and now let's talk about dessert - we ordered the peach cheesecake and when I mentioned to Aslan that it was my husbands birthday they made the dessert plate look extra special ! Charming decor, great food and service! We spent the night in Morristown, traveling across Tennessee, and chose Holston's based on reviews, and my husband likes chicken fried chicken. Attached to Jose's, in an area of scattered retail, this restaurant has a firepit out front, and a welcoming vibe inside. We itcalled ahead and although they do not take reservations, Kirsten put us on the call ahead list. The decor inside is rich and lovely, with beautiful marbled tables, soft comfy dark booths, a calming atmosphere with some upbeat background music, a lovely bar and lots of space. Our server was Melrose, who took great care of us. She recommended the chicken fried chicken over the chicken fried steak, and my husband loved it, served on homemade mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Seemed very fresh, as mine was: I had the strawberry chicken salad with cranberries, golden raisins and other wonderful things, and was so delicious that I cleaned my plate. Melrose did bring us some small biscuits, but honestly they were not memorable. Our dinners were so delicious, and reasonable, each was $9.99! We were full and did not get dessert. We almost did not come to Holston's for dinner due to the bad reviews that we read on here. I am glad we went anyways. The service, and food was fantastic. I ordered the fajitas and was some of the best fajitas I ever had. My husband ordered the steak, french onion soup and spinach maria, and he kept raving over all of it. I will not be returning to this establishment, it was the worst experience I have had in some time! As I walked in to pick up my order the hostess never says a word and just point at the bar. Upon arriving at the bar, for what seemed like the manager, asks me if I have paid and what I ordered. Before I could even finish replying he cuts me off and walks away. When he returns with my food he places it on the bar, and just walks away without a word. Now on to the food... The fried pickles were, just a bit greasy, but tasted great! The entrée I ordered was the Little Italy. What I received was a pile of noodles with a very bland sauce, with dry chicken on top covered in cheese. The vegetables on top taste old and dirty. I ordered the grilled salmon with mango chutney for lunch. Maybe the lunch servers aren't use to serving dinner entrees. At least mine was not. I ordered a side salad and mashed pot as my sides which was nice that I could substitute without a hassle. I requested bread or crackers with my salad and was brought saltines. The table beside me got bread with their salad. My tea glass sat empty for quite sometime. I'm even one of those patrons that put it at the end of the booth for an easy visual. No luck here. When the kitchen staff brought my meal it was well done salmon. (my server never asked how I wanted it prepared). I asked him if they had bread and he said yes, so I asked for some. My server brought it out with no butter. Not to mention she had removed my bread plate shortly after I sat down. Please teach servers the purpose of small plates( not just for appetizers and how to question the menu choices when ordered. The salmon was yummy but the potatoes lacked taste. read more

Went here with my wife for dinner one evening based on experiences with other locations of the chain. I wasn't very hungry, so I just ordered the loaded potato skins. My wife ordered the Hawaiian Ribeye with sweet potato fries and a side salad. Of course, we waited a while to see our server, so we were apprehensive about the service. Food finally came, but no salad ever appeared. The quality of the food was actually pretty good--in fact, the potato skins were excellent (and HUGE). RUDE! RUDE! RUDE! We had visited this location once before and had a wonderful experience, so when we were looking for a place to go again we immediately thought of Holston's. Unfortunately this experience was very different. 1st we ordered margaritas, which had black specs floating In them. They figured out someone had spilled pepper into the ice, and our drinks were replaced with no problem. The. A member of our party ordered a steak medium rare. When the steak arrived it was rare and cold in the middle. When she asked to have it refired to bring it to the correct temperature. When it was brought out the person (Jeanette) handed the steak to us, then Said to the server (well within our hearing) 'watch her say it is too done'. Staying the night in Morristown and was looking for dinner for my kids. They ended up splitting the sirloin and fries, I had their salad (Cesar) hamburger with onion rings and side of barbecue sauce. Their steak was difficult to cut (blame the knife) but was very good. My sandwich was great, and I do recommend the bbq sauce. Few resturants try making a western burger and fail, they haven't attempted and succeeded...I slammed a couple of rings on top with the sauce and wow. Will definately be back. read more

Good food, but terrible service... I want to preface this by saying that the food was great. My steak was cooked well and we enjoyed the food, so kudos to the kitchen. However, the service was lack luster. We were promptly seated when we walked in, and then...nothing. We waited at the table for about 10 minutes and nobody spoke to us. We were ignored. Now I have worked in food service for years, and if someone had just said,"hi, I'll be right back," then that would have been fine, but we were ignored. Finally a gentleman I believe to be the manager spoke to us. When we asked about a drink menu, we also didn't have silverware, he said, and I quote , "well we are out of everything, so I don't know what good it will do, but I'll get it anyway." We were shocked, but ok. He didn't ask if we wanted water or bread or anything. Finally a nice older waitress asked if we wanted water and bread. She explained that they were down a waitress and it was a bit hectic. I dont think this is too good of an excuse, as I saw at least 4 waitresses, the manager, and a food runner. Anyway, throughout the meal the food was just plopped down in front of us, and we had to ask for our plates to be removed. I ordered a martini, indeed they were out of all the vodkas except absolute, and then it never came. Finally I managed to get the waitress to stop by and she said she would check with the bartender. We were almost finished with out meal. She said he was busy taking orders on the phone, why that is his job who knows, and he hadn't even begun to make it. I'm in town this week for work and per usual have tried finding somewhat local places to try. My coworkers and I were deciding between a couple of other options and Holston's won on a coin flip. After reading previous yelp reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, we all ended up very pleased with our experience and I would certainly recommend it and will try again if back in town. We arrived shortly after 7 pm and the restaurant was nearly dead. We were seated by a nice hostess and Lisa, our waitress, stopped by immediately. She was one of the nicest waitresses I've ever had and really made everything pleasant. I'm not sure what waitresses other negative yelp reviewers had, but we experienced none of that. I had a hard time deciding between several items on the menu, but settled on the 12 oz. maple glazed pork chop with mac & cheese and sweet potato souffle. The pork chop was way better than I expected it to be, grilled perfectly, with great flavor. I've had better mac & cheese and sweet potato casserole, but the main dish made up for it. My two coworkers both enjoyed what they got as well. The place was clean, staff was friendly, and service was quick. We had to wait a little longer than expected for our beers to come. That and the mediocre sides were the only reason they lost one star from me, but still would recommend. read more

I hate to be that guy, but here goes... Saturday night at 7:30. Not exceptionally busy or anything. Being just me, there was a 2 top in the bar area that I happily took. 5 minutes with no one until finally someone who I assume the manager walked by and asked me if I had been taken care of. I said no and asked for a Captain and Coke. She brought it right back and went on her way. It wasn't quite filled the whole way and was Captain with maybe a splash of Coke. Fine for me, but probably not the best way to make it. It tasted almost watered down. I milked that for another 15 minutes, so 20 minutes since sitting down, went to the bar, and asked for the check, still having not been acknowledged by a single server. Said drink was also $7.50 as well. It's too bad really. It looks great and the photos from other people look really appetizing, but now I see the reviews from all the others who say the service is poor. Given that I'm in Morristown so seldom, I won't be back here when I do return, unfortunately. Either better or more staff and/or management is apparently needed. read more

The location of this place is a bit odd because it's right next to a Mexican restaurant with very loud colors. Clean dining area, clean restrooms and very friendly staff. The spinach artichoke dip is THE BEST!!! I had the grilled Salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Hubby had the Tennessee ranchero sandwich with grilled chicken and it did not disappoint. Our bill was less than fifty dollars even though I had a blue moon beer from the bar. Our waitresses name was Taylor and she did an amazing job. Sit at the bar, get FAR better service than at a table. Not sure why...but we consistently get awful service...or rather a lack of service...in the main dining room. Bar has primarily attentive servers and it has always been easy to get a seat...maybe we are not going at peak times. The food issues that we experienced the first 6-8 months they were open appear to have been rectified, the last several visits it has been what we ordered and arrived either appropriately hot or cold after several lukewarm experiences of both steak and salads. Happy Hour M-F, be sure to mention that if you are served in dining room, they have to enter a certain code to get the reduced price and that was a struggle for the last two waitresses. read more

I have been yearning to try this restaurant for a few years now and tonight was my first time. As much as I want to love this place, the environment, friendly staff, vintage historical pictures hanging and overall great atmosphere, they were completely out of steak, ribs, and onion rings. I judge restaurants like this by how well they prepare a steak and I was let down to not experience theirs. I went with the spaghetti which was presented well with hand rolled meatballs that were delicious, however, the sauce tasted just like they opened a can of tomato in sauce and dumped them on the plate. They had the Covid thing right with distancing. Nice job there. Waitress was pleasant enough and didnt seem thrown when we had to send cold food back for a reheat. Both of us ordered the potroast. The management obviously didnt follow through by checking quality of what comes out of the kitchen. Potroast was more of a thick gelatinous gravy clumped on top of a piece of bread and pretty sure mashed potatoes underneath. No visible vegetables in the clump to be found. Suggestion... manager....manage. I only hope that at some point the food was up to temp. Restaurants... lets not forget the goal of food service. You cant hide behind the Covid scare forever with poor quality and short staffing. read more

We went having good expectations with have eating there once before sadly we were disappointed. We had 4 different meals The patty melt one of us got was cooked wonderful yet our other 3 meals were dissatisfying. A Steak Burger was asked for medium and was burnt till it tasted like charcoal; another meal was a 10 oz sirloin again asked for medium and cooked to almost leather feeling plus both orders of fries with those meals were cold like they had been sitting for a long time. The last meal was a chicken parmesan penne it was ok not the best in the world but as soon as it started tasting well found a hair in the chicken. Fairly disappointed...the atmosphere and decor were very nice. We had a relaxing time but the food was less than stellar. Our hostess and waiter were also great. I ordered the Deluxe Grilled Chicken sandwich. First, this was the smallest chicken breast I have ever seen. I would have had more meat from a dollar menu chicken sandwich at McDonalds or Wendy's. That lead to an unfortunate bun-to-meat ratio. The bun wasn't stale, but it wasn't fresh either. My sandwich should have come with cheese, chipotle ranch, lettuce and tomato as ordered straight off the menu. It came with lettuce, tomato and pickles. No cheese and no sauce for my semi-stale bun. Unfortunately the restaurant picked up about the time we got out lunches so it took our waiter about 10 minutes to check back so I could ask for a side of sauce and at least let him know order was off (wasn't going to send back but not worth the 8.95 they charged me). That wasn't his fault, he was slammed and he was very pleasant. The spinach Maria was great and my co-worker seemed to enjoy his meal. On the surface, this place looks upscale - but it's anything but. When you approach, you'll note that it's attached to another restaruant - a Mexican joint. I've been in Morristown for business a couple of times previously and have dined at the Mexican restaurant that's attached - and they're literally attached. They share restrooms and you can freely walk between the two restaurants. The external and internal appearance make you think you might be walking into a somewhat mid-scale chophouse, but alas - you're not. In actuality, this is simply a restaurant that slings typical Americana fare with mediocre execution. Nothing was terrible, nothing was great. It seems to be advertised as a "chophouse" kind of restaurant that serves steaks - and though it does, nobody in the place seemed to be eating that fancy - it was all fare that one would get at a Friday's or a Chili's - Burgers, Philly Cheese Steaks, Chicken Salads, etc.. I had the Philly Steak - because I'd had a hankering for one of these for about a week. The sandwich was presented nicely, on a hoagie roll with cheese melted on top of green and red onions that sat atop long strips of a less than premium cut of steak (Flat Iron, Sirloin, etc..). I mean, the sandwich wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. I ordered the onion rings at the recommendation of the waitress - and they were HUGE. The size wow factor was the biggest thing they had going for them - the onion was very tough and the breading wasn't anything to write home about. My colleagues had burger and a chicken salad - all looked as expected. Service was pretty good here - We were seated immediately, and our waitress was very friendly and very attentive. A manager did stop by during our meal to ask how everything was. All in all, this place is your average Americana restaurant and in my experience, the food is on par with what one would get at a Chili's or a Friday's - It's not bad - but don't go with high expectations. read more

This might be hard for some people to believe but, I come to find Holston's very simple,classic and somewhat elegant. I've heard of stories when they first opened so I was wary for the longest time but my girlfriend convinced me to go. Don't regret it and there sides are amazing.
