This is my favorite spot to sit with a group of friends, watch a game, and enjoy some delicious BBQ. I have been to both the West Ashley and Downtown locations multiple times and have yet to be let down by the service. I often arrive with a group of about five to eight people well before a game starts and have never had an issue. If you are coming for a game, I recommend getting there early so you do not have to stand around and wait for a table. Now for the food... it is so good! I am someone who loves sauces and condiments, so I absolutely love how each table has a variety of options you can mix and match instead of having to ask a server. I personally always get a meat platter with a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese or a pulled pork sandwich. You truly cannot go wrong here. Some of my friends rave about the tacos, while others are obsessed with their iconic wings. Don't miss out on their incredible tots or brisket nachos. My husband and I stopped here for lunch while we were out exploring West Ashley to possibly relocate in this area. The positive reviews prompted us to visit. We were greeted by a nice bartender who accommodated my request for a low vs high table. We then met Rachel, our waitress. She was very pleasant and attentive to us. Both my husband and I ordered the brisket, and I ordered pulled pork in addition. My husband ordered baked beans and coleslaw as side dishes. I ordered the collard greens. The brisket was outstanding in flavor. I finished that meat and moved on to the pulled pork. I was shocked when I put it in my mouth. It was SOOOO salty!!!! Now I know from my own cooking BOO-BOOs that you cannot use the same amount of salt on pork that you might on beef. Not sure Home Team's pit master knows this???? My husband said the vinegar-based coleslaw did not have much flavor, but the baked beans were good. He could not identify if they were canned-but I could see they did not appear soupy like most BBQ places serve their canned beans. My collard greens had a generous amount of meat in them-more than I would ever expect. What I was surprised with was that they were spiced up to the point, they made me cough with heat and had vinegar in them as well. Now, after a few bites, I did get used to them and enjoyed them. If I had my choice...I would not have wanted the vinegar on them automatically. When the bill came, I was a bit surprised. The menu had listed that you could purchase the meats by the pound. I specifically ordered as "I will have 1/4 lb of brisket and the same amount of pulled pork. I would also like just a side of collard greens and that is all." When my tray came, it had those Items on them in addition of a Hawaiian roll and 2-fried pork rind pieces. Now my husband specifically said, "I am going to have the pick one meat platter", which DID include the roll and rinds. My lunch should have cost $4.50 for the pork and $6.50 for the brisket and $4 for the collards---a total of $15. She charged us $22.95. She charged us $20.95 for my husband's meal, which was correct. As I stated in another Charleston, SC restaurant review...I am going to dedicate my remaining days when we retire here to SHAMING restaurants into doing the appropriate ethical practice of not up-charging patrons just to make a buck instead of winning their loyal patronage!!! Opted to take my 2meat platter to go so can't speak to dine in service. However, the host was very friendly. The platter comes with 2 sides, but I wasn't in the mood for any of them, so I asked if I could get tots as a side (which are under the snack section). They obliged for a $3 up charge, and gave me double tots to satisfy the 2 sides inclusion. Brisket was a $5 up charge as one of the meats, but I always try the brisket at a bbq restaurant, so I paid for that as well. I was disappointed when I opened my platter to see the very minimal amount of food for the price, especially with the brisket up charge. The main platter was pretty good, but the tots were salty. I haven't had BBQ this good in a very long time. I didn't take any photos because I only got takeout and housed the food immediately, but it looked as good as it tasted. I tried the Brunswick stew, coleslaw, pulled pork with sweet and mustard sauces, and potato salad. All of them were 5/5 stars. If you need to refuel after a day in the sun, order one of everything and enjoy. We are usually there pretty late, and they never complain. There are tvs, but there are no sounds coming from the TV, so you won't necessarily hear the games playing, but on the plus side, you can hear your friends talking to you instead. Whatever you do don't order the St. Louis BBQ Ribs. First of all they were not St. Louis ribs they were babyback ribs which were overcooked, dry like shoe leather, still stuck in my teeth. And when I questioned my waiter about them he didn't have a clue about the difference, probably not his fault. Passing off babyback ribs as st. louis ribs, no wonder why they don't picture them in there advertising. They should know better and I believe they do. Great barbecue! You must come here--or go to the location closest to you--to try the awesome bbq that Home Team BBQ provides. My first experience eating at Home Team was riddled with roadblocks: during the summer of 2022, on the last day of our trip, my brother, dad, grandpa, and I made the drive from Daniel Island out to the Sullivans Island location. Once we arrived, we discovered that the restaurant was slammed. Every table was packed, and the hostess informed us it'd be over an hour and a half wait. Ouch. However, we were determined to try some bbq before flying home to California, so we continued searching. We pulled up google maps and made our way over to the West Ashley location, which, thankfully, was able to seat us. The food was everything I'd hoped it would be, and I've been thinking of it ever since. Fast forward around a year and a half later and I'm back in South Carolina, hungry for Home Team. At first, my family attempted to order it on New Year's Eve Eve, but the only location that was open--the Mount Pleasant location, which looked like a really cool spot--was posting an hour and a half wait time for takeout orders. My dad and I drove over to try and order in person, hoping the wait time would be shorter, but alas, we were mistaken, and no bbq was acquired that night. Fast-forward two days, and it's January 1st, 2024. A new year full of new opportunities...including the opportunity to get bbq. My dad, brother, grandpa, and I drove on over to the West Ashley location, where we first tried Home Team, to place a takeout order. Even though we had a large order, it was ready in 20 minutes. Success! After driving back to DI, it was time for the moment of truth. I started with the smoked chicken wings, which had a dry rub. The wings were large, the chicken was moist, and the Alabama white sauce that came with added a sweet and tangy flavor. I enjoyed my sliced brisket sandwich, which was comprised of two large thickly-cut slices of brisket. This brisket had a good smoke ring and was easy to bite through as well as chewy. The Carolina mustard sauce and the pickles and pickled onions added some acidity that complemented the smokiness of the brisket. The bun was soft and sweet. I had no complaints about the side of Mac and cheese, which was creamy and had a solid amount of spices in it. It was still good at room temperature. To wrap everything up, Home Team BBQ delivered, and was well worth the effort it took to get it. I can confidently say that I will be back for more when given the chance. I can only hope that I'll have an easier time acquiring the food than these past experiences. read more

Home Team is great! BBQ is weird in Charleston with a ton of arguments that will get everywhere (Lewis, Swig n Swine, Rodneys, etc.). So I don't really try to compare. Home Team has specials that vary depending on the location. It's a very casual and fun spot and West Ash had a great outdoors location (raining this time, but in the past it's always been nice) with plenty of heaters if it's cold. The service is great, the beers on tap are solid and seem to rotate, and the food comes pretty quick. The wings were definitely our favorite part. We like to get the dry rub and then dip into dressing or any of the BBQ sauces lining each table. I didn't try the banana pudding because I'm not a huge sweets guy but my girlfriend said it was pretty good. The mac and cheese seemed like a classic macaroni+mornay sauce combo but I'm not sure versed on cheeses so I couldn't tell you which one is in there. There was a slice of lime that I squeezed on the carnitas and I finished with some of the sweet red BBQ sauce. Home Team home run! The four of us stopped in after a concert, newbies all. HTBBQ is a relaxed place, with a large bar, high tops, tables, and booths. It smells of authenticity: clean, with an undertone of smoked meat that permeates the place like good cheer. We sat down anticipating a good meal. We were greeted promptly by our server, and she was friendly and efficient. Drinks all around, and I took a stab at the fried pork rinds appetizer. I've never had them before, but I figured if I was going to try them, this would be the right place to do so. They were good: crispy, light, and lightly seasoned. I may have eaten more than my quarter share. Our server was affable and knew all about the menu items, guiding us as needed. I ordered a half rack with sides of collard greens and Brunswick stew. The rack was beautiful, a nicely charred crust with meaty ribs that fell off the bone. Done to perfection, and with HTBBQ's selection of 6 bbq sauces they were quickly gone.
