We stopped by here for the first time as we had driven from San Jose to drop a relative off at the Oakland Airport and we wanted to stay in the general area in case her flight got cancelled. I had the veggie grilled cheese sandwich which was filled with mushrooms and spinach. My husband got eggs benedict and my son had a pastrami sandwich. The food came out very fast and all three meals were done well. Instead of weird nondairy things in plastic containers, they brought us proper half and half in reusable old school metal. The whole ambience if of old school diner. The service was extremely attentive throughout -- coming by to offer coffee and fill our waters even after we paid the bill. I typically don't drink orange juice but noticed on their menu that it was fresh squeezed so I decided to check it out and so did my husband. Oh man, it was SUPER yum and perfect. Bestie and I love this place, she LOVES the coffee especially. I want to start by saying Alex and Ya-Ya are THE BEST! Both are always friendly and engaging. Alex is ALWAYS super patient because she knows I never know for sure what I want. I realize now more than ever, people have service animals everywhere but this is not a large restaurant and dogs are known to scratch, shake, etc... no Thanks, I'll pass while I'm eating and I actually like dogs. Stopped by here before heading to the Alameda Pointe Antiques Faire on a Sunday. The service is fast and friendly. We literally walked in at 8:50am and got out at 9:20am. Once we sat down and ordered our drinks, the server brought them to our table immediately. We ordered our food and after 10 minutes zipped by, our food was served at our table. I ordered the Haus plate with the poached eggs and it was delicious! However, the hashbrowns and the hollandaise could have had some seasoning or herbs for added flavor. The place got super busy after a few minutes and all the tables were full and I noticed that people were constantly walking in to buy some donuts! So before picking up the check, I ordered one pink donut with sprinkles, one maple glazed bacon donut and one matcha green tea donut. I took more than a bite out of all three! I've been to the location in SF but first time at this location...this place gets busy as its small, has yummy breakfast items and a case full of donuts! Breakfast is not my fave meal of the day as all i need is a cup of coffee...but my go to item when dining with friends would be the Eggs Benedicts - original (poached egg, ham, on top an english muffin with hollandaise on the side) but today i had the chorizo benedict which was delicious with peppers, onions, plenty of chorizo with a nice hollandaise sauce! I like it on the side as some places can smother it with that stuff....and sometimes, less is more! Coffee was surprisingly tasty, service good, street parking (on a weekday) is convenient, and left with an apple fritter (didn't have the maple bacon i wanted!) to go....seems a little pricey for breakfast (2 benedicts, 2 coffees, 2 fritters to go about $45 with tax/tip) but a good place to indulge once in awhile...you can get your breakfast salty and sweet craving fix here! read more

Parking is just street parking so it's not that easy to find some good parking when it's peak hours for eating. Price: $10.95, which includes either fries or house made chips. For me, it was either the #70 - Gilligan's Tuna, dill tuna, melted American cheese, grilled onions, mayo on sliced sourdough or #76, When Pigs Fly, baked mac and cheese with ham, broccoli, cheddar & jack cheese topped with panko crumbs. I love baked mac 'n cheese, but too much of it causes my blood sugar to rise (type 2 diabetic). I have to watch my carbs and sweets intake these days. I opted for the #70 on the marble rye bread. I can only surmise the best time to go to Homeskillet is after the breakfast and lunch crowds are gone. The only minor drawback is the seating - hard bench and chairs - not totally comfy. However, that is neither here nor there. It's the food that matters the most. We were not disappointed with the taste and the value. My Gilligan's tuna was quite yummy and the fries were on point - fresh cut (not frozen) russet potatoes, not greasy, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. I'm not a ketchup fan, but some Kinder BBQ sauce for the fries would have been a good dipping sauce. I did not eat my lunch all in one sitting, as the portion was generous and a bit much for me. My husband did not say much or complain. His Piglet and fries must have been delish. Donuts in the display case looked good, but I did not see my favorite - the French cruller. My friend took me here because she frequents this spot pretty often but we were met with poor service which I really hope was just due to them being busy so I'd come back to allow redemption. I love donuts and I love breakfast so I had to check out Homeskillet. After walking 4 miles to earn it, I waited in a line about 7-8 people deep. The cashier doubled as a hostess, welcoming and assigning seats to customers. As a result, it was actually pretty orderly. I ordered the #1 Classic Breakfast with the chicken apple sausage, over easy eggs, and wheat bread. It also came with hash browns that weren't just a solid block of potato. The only downside of the meal was the chicken sausage was kind of tasteless. I had to smother it with ketchup to try to eat it all. The eggs were done perfectly. Everything on the plate, besides the sausage, was terrific. 4 stars. I also ordered two donuts, blueberry fritter and cinnamon roll, to go. There weren't any prices but I was sure the price would match the size. The donuts are enormous. I ended up eating them the next day and I would absolutely go back just for the freshness of them. I shared the blueberry fritter at work since it was so huge and everyone loved it. Donuts get 5 stars. For cleanliness, this restaurant was outstanding. While waiting for my food, one lady was cleaning every single piece of silverware and made sure the plates of food were nicely played before taking them to customers. I would definitely go back. The business only allow 4 people in at any one time so there were several people waiting outside already. I tried to be considerate and waited 25 mins to pick up my order to minimize traffic. Unfortunately, the food was a bit cold by then. I recommend ordering online and pick-up the food in one go. Homeskillet was always a place I had walked by often in Alameda, and my brother often likes going here for their donuts. Overall while it isn't a bad place for brunch in Alameda, I think I'd come here more so for their donuts instead. When I came at around 10am on a Wednesday, there were no other customers inside the restaurant, and my server seemed very nice. Original Hot Cakes ($6) Comes with 2 large pancakes, which were cooked really nicely, and were soft and delicious. However, the side of butter that it came with the hot cakes had a piece of hair and little pieces of black lint in it, which I found odd. After sending it back and notifying the waitress, she gave me another side of butter, but oddly enough it looked the same/like she had scraped off the top layer a little and had reserved it back to me, because it still had pieces of black lint to the inside side edges of the butter container. I don't know if they just leave their butter out before serving it to customers, but judging from the hard layer of butter on top with the collective black lint, I was kind of wary that BOTH sides of butter I had to send back had small flecks of black lint in it. I ended up scraping my second side of butter off kinda warily. Matcha Donut - Free with a Yelp check in. Not a bad matcha donut, though the matcha taste wasn't as potent as I'd expect it to be/plus the paper component that it was given in got all of the matcha glaze onto the paper bag. But it was a nice, soft donut, and since I'm already a fan of their donuts, if I came back I'd probably order another flavor of donuts instead. Overall, I mean Homeskillet gets a 3.5, but pushing more towards a 3 than a 4. Is it a bad place to eat at? No. But do I like it more than other places in Alameda, like Ole's or even Jim's, which are virtually a block away? Uhhhh I don't know about that. I think it's not a bad establishment, but personally I don't think I'd come back unless it was for their donuts. I figured how good a can a skillet be but this thing was delicious! very flavorful and the sour cream was a good fit for it. I added some tabasco and ketchup to finish it off and it was yummy. There is some counter sitting options available. But overall, I liked it and the portions are big. Anyway, I just wanted to say this cafe has good donuts, good brunches, but most of all, the manager 'Polo'- was very friendly and accomodating. I came in to request for a donation for our fundraiser, and as a small business, I realize it could be somewhat of a burden for them (costs, etc). He slightly hesitated since he had already donated to various events this year, but after a few seconds of me prodding, he obliged. Thank you so much Polo! I believe in karma.
