So the other day I ordered the Broadway Scramble with no bread. The food was good, but not great. It lacked some flavor. But my main breakfast place was closed and this was the closet one so it left me no choice. I decided to give this a second chance but damn my impression just went downhill from there. Sadly HS has gone downhill since my last visit. Not sure if the ownership changed but honestly even Denny's would be a grade up compared to the food at HS. I haven't been back for a few years and I went and ordered an egg white omelette with hash brown. To my surprise, what I got was mushroom and onions with a sprinkle of eggs . The hollandaise was out of a package and very watery. The chorizo was dry and rubbery with no flavor. My boyfriend covered his in salt and pepper and ate it anyway, I could not. The server admitted it didn't seem right lately bit did NOTHING!!! Didn't offer a different option, didn't discount it NOTHING! She said ya it hasn't looked right lately and walked away. I was yelled at in Spanish by the wait staff for not understanding the check in process (have to sign a paper outside the restaurant to get a table), food too more than 45 minutes and missed a whole entree, no waters were ever provided despite multiple requests and still had to pay the whole bill. Location: Cute part of Alameda with boutiques, coffee, food, movie theater. Parking is mostly metered in the area but not too crazy. I saw they offer delivery so I decided to try them out for the sweets and I ordered the breakfast item menu the hashtag The doughnuts have a nice presentation but are not very moist. Not the worst but certainly not the best. I also ordered an apple fritter which was quite moist and tasty The hashtag was pretty simple but super satisfying it's the perfect portion. You feel full but not over stuffed I added salt and hot sauce to mine then it was perfect . My criticism would be they could kick it up a notch on the seasoning. Overall pretty good . Considering the crowd waiting outside, the moderately high rating on Yelp and the photos of delicious looking food, I had pretty high expectations for our experience here. A table for two on a Sunday morning, 30 minute wait. My husband and I simply wandered into Peet's next door for some coffee while we waited. There isn't a good place for people to wait for a table, so we joined the crowd out on the sidewalk. When our name called (I think the wait time was actually less than the quoted 30 minutes) we were sat against a wall with a long bench shared by a handful of other guests. It's a small dining front, so the tables were squeezed in pretty tightly to each other. I felt like I was violating the personal space of the people next to us when trying to squeeze into my seat. It wasn't easy to get in and out, so once I sat down there was no getting up. Since the tables were so close together and so many people were packed into the space, We could hardly hear ourselves think. The people next to us were just wrapping up, and they promptly seated the next guests. The server hadn't greeted us yet, but proceeded to take their drink orders and get their food going. I think they were regulars because regardless of the lack of baked good/donut menu's, they knew what their options were and ordered some as starters. Eventually the hostess came over and took our order because no one has spoken to us yet. My husband ordered the #11- Haus Benedict and asked for double bacon instead of Turkey. These came with a side of hash browns. I ordered the # 55- the California Burger with chipotle sauce and subbed my fries out for tater tots (add $1.50) My husband said that the hollandaise sauce didn't have much flavor, so it didn't hit the spot like he hoped. I tried his hash browns, and they weren't quite cooked enough and were soggier than they were crispy. My burger (asked for Medium well, should've asked for medium) came well done. It was okay, but nothing special. The tater tots were a good choice, they were properly browned and delicious. I ended up eating most of my tater tots and hardly touching the burger. Before we had finished eating, or they had even spoken to us, the waitress that had served the table next to us tossed the bill in front of my husband. We paid, boxed our food up, and squeezed our way outta there. Needless to say, I felt the place was a bit overrated. It wasn't the worst experience I've had, but I wasn't blown away by the food, ambiance, or service. Maybe the experience would be better if we came mid week when they weren't so busy. Stopped here for breakfast the other day, wanting to try their green tea glaze donut, but the staff said that they no longer make those, and I didn't find anything interesting donut on their display either. I'm not sure if they were the only place open on new years day or if home skillet is always this poppin, but wow it was lively here. We walked in, wrote our name on the list, and saw there were many parties ahead of us. Fortunately, this cute part of Alameda left us with no shortage of ways to kill time and the wait went quick. (shout out to the thrift shop with the awesome book selection two doors down!) We were seated after probably 30-40 minutes and from there they moved pretty quickly. Service wasn't the most attentive, but they deserve a pass since they were trying to quickly move so many hungry people. The place is built to fit the most people it can, so be prepared to sit about a foot away from your neighbors on either side. We were hungry and were happy to capitalize on the free donut with Yelp check-in. The flavor was alright, but a free donut is a great donut in my book! Especially as a nice courtesy when people have waited a while. Very thoughtful on their part. I had the hashtag and my brother ordered an omelette. His omelette was truthfully a scramble pretending to be an omelette, but he enjoyed it no less. The hashtag was a satisfying portion of food, but could have used more avocado and sour cream. I got tired of the taste of hash brown and onion about half way through the dish. All in all, food quality was decent and I enjoyed my time here. Uncertain I would wait that long for food again unless the flavors are a little better, but I left satisfied and enjoyed strolling around Alameda. I'm very disappointed by the takeout experience. I called in my takeout order at 9:50am, I was told it will be ready in 15min. I arrived at home skillet around 10:10am. As I was paying for the food, I was told it will be a few more minutes. 10-20min passed by, all of takeout orders are for delivery app services like UberEats, Doordash, etc. I was waiting at the counter for 30min for my order. Mind you, I only ordered 1 entree, haus Benedicts. Finally at 10:50am I finally received my order. It legit took them 1 HOUR to make my 1 entree!!! This is ridiculous!!! The staff apologized on the long wait time and explained there are 3 delivery services n the kitchen cooks the food in the order the ticket goes in. I would of thought they'd prioritize dine in or phone in takeout orders!!! The staff threw in a free donut in my order. But oh man I don't know if I'll go back to homeskillet for brunch. When we got home and opened the order, the meal looked like one of the chef just gave up and threw in all of the ingredients. There's no presentation whatsoever. It was like someone threw up on it. Homeskillet is a decent place to grab breakfast - the restaurant has a bright ambience and seating is arranged comfortably. I think it's really convenient that orders are contactless and people can pay for their own foods even within one table, so that's a plus. The last time I came around I ordered the California Love and while it was mediocre, it was filling. I went here for Sunday brunch. As I was walking up I saw a line of people waiting outside. Thought to myself wow, this must be worth the wait. I signed up on the waiting list, there were 7 guest in front of us. Waitress advised me the wait would be about 20 min and that was pretty accurate. Homeskillet is an Alameda brunch jewel. Big portions, decent prices, and above average provisions. Plus they have a large display of donuts- check in on Yelp to get a free one! I've gone to brunch here a few times and each time has been pretty good. I recommend coming here with an appetite or plan to share with others - I never leave here without a box if I get my own meal. Service was attentive in the beginning, although when we finished , I ended up refilling my own water glass, getting my own to-go box, and bringing the bill to the server. I didn't mind much since I needed to get up and claim my free donut anyway. Came here by chance because Ole's line down the street was too crazy of a wait. We got seated almost immediately for a table of 2. Ordered basic breakfasts - bacon, egg whites, hash browns - chicken apple sausage, over easy eggs, hash browns Nothing over the top, but food was good for what it is hence the additional star. When it was time to pay, I saw that my dish (the chicken apple sausage) was $2 more. I questioned the waitress and showed her a picture of the menu from Yelp of the prices since I didn't have the physical menu in front of me anymore. She started to argue with me that the picture is old, but then shut up real fast when she looked at their current menu and both dishes are priced the same. She then goes on to explain that in the system, it adds $2 extra because I chose chicken apple sausage. Not once when she took our order did she mention that it was extra and nowhere on the menu does it say extra charge. I'm fine with paying extra if I am made aware beforehand. So a friend and I had super high hopes for Homeskillet and the long line of people milling outside the place suggested that a good thing might be worth the wait. So we waited for 45 minutes. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The flavor of the food was average, the cleanliness was so so (the tables were sticky and the bench seats still had food from the previous diners). The servers were super busy so at first it took quite a long time to get service or a refill on the coffee but when it slowed down we got about 3 refills in 20 minutes. The brunch-uritto was ok. We did a Yelp check in so we got a complimentary plain donut which was nothing to write home about. Honestly, the service team tried and I can appreciate that, but the plate full of bad greens mixed in with good greens tells me they were using the bottom of the bowl/bag and didn't pay attention to the quality of the food they were putting out and it ruined the whole thing. It made me question the rest of the meal. Next time I'm going to spend the same amount of money and put in the time to wait for a hometown eatery, I'll hit up Neptune's. read more
