Arrived around 5pm on Cinco de Mayo and were quickly seated. Ordered the highly recommended duck taco, carne asada taco, and birria taco. Portions are generous and they definitely load up on the protein. The duck and carne asada tacos were absolutely incredible. Birria was great too but I've had better. Their chips have this seasoning on them that is really tasty, but it's only at the top of the chip bowl, so it would be nice for all of the chips to be coated in that. CaCao Mexicatessen has been a staple in the Eagle Rock community, serving up some of the best Mexican food in the city. Located right next door to one of the busiest Trader Joes, with the smallest parking lot, is Cacao. There is street parking if you're lucky, and if you're not, you'll have to go around the corner and park in the neighborhood and walk back. The restaurant has indoor, outdoor, and even bar seating. You order at the register and find a seat when it's busy, and when it's not, you just take a seat. The service is quick and nice! I usually go for the duck carnita, guisado de pato (duck crackling,) or chicharron tacos. They are incredibly delicious and unique! They have a savory flavor to them that really seeps throughout every bite. I can guarantee you won't find another taco like that in the city. The other tacos on the menu are also great (I've tried them all) but they are similar to more traditional flavors. Another stand out on the menu is their mole! A very deep flavor with a hint of sweetness. If you haven't had mole before, its kind of like a chocolatey curry, but it's not sweet like milk chocolate, but more earthy. I used Cacao Mexicatessen for a dinner party recently. The food was delicious and the premade margaritas were a bit hit. All we had to do was add ice. The restaurant was very helpful in deciding quantities and the chef emailed me back to confirm the order and help me decide how much we needed. We ordered taquitos and chips and guacamole to start. The taquitos were yummy and the chips were so good I was eating leftover chips for two days straight. The taco meat and homemade tortillas were delicious and people really loved the trays of cheese enchiladas (one tray with mole and the other with red sauce). The rice and beans were good. The salad was absolutely wonderful. It would make a fantastic main course for a small dinner party, especially if you added chicken. (They made us a half size portion for 15 people.) I couldn't have had a better experience! Came here for the first time last Saturday and sat at the bar. Got the guava margarita which seems to be a hit - it is delicious! I ordered a carne asada taco and Ensenada fish taco, and also tried a bite of the Koreano taco which was very unique. Came here with a few friends and enjoyed the entire experience (minus parking) on a Saturday night. Luckily, after circling a few times someone left the parking lot in the back so I was able to park there. Everything was delicious. The food was okay overall, although I thought it was a little on the salty side. Unfortunately, the service and seating experience left a bad impression. While we were waiting, one of the waitresses (it was not Vanessa) appeared to seat several of her regular customers ahead of other parties who had been waiting longer. I personally saw at least three parties arrive after us and get seated, either indoors or outdoors, before those already on the waitlist. To make matters worse, she didn't just seat her regular customers ahead of everyone else--she also took them as her own tables. It gave the impression that regulars were receiving preferential treatment while everyone else was expected to keep waiting. This happened on June 30, 2026. I want to be clear that Vanessa was not the issue; this review is about the other employee who was managing the seating list that day. Food was slow to arrive, and I was surprised the drinks made it to the table just as the entrees were being put down. Order tortilla soup as an appetizer, it came to the table in the middle of us eating our entrees. Ordered fresh guacamole, and it comes to the table in a sealed cheap plastic container, as if they ran to the grocery store and took the label off it and brought it to the table. This wonderful neighborhood restaurant is hidden jewel. Warm ambience, nice staff, great food. This was our first time here and we order the chicken and grilled fish burritos. We had some chips and salsa while we waited for our food and they were really yummy. They put a special seasoning on the chips and it is extra good. Unfortunately they were out of guacamole for the night so we couldn't try that (it was close to closing time). The burritos arrived relatively quick, were huge and delicious. The fish tasted fresh. Great Service from the entire team/staff. Waitress Vanny, the busser and others jumped in to help. I called same day to make sure they could serve our family group of 9. They said no problem and when we arrived our table was waiting for us set up with menus and water was served as soon as we sat. We had a table of 9 and the restaurant seemed very busy (Taco Tuesday) as lots of seats and tables were occupied. It was our first time visiting this establishment and I'm happy to say that everything went off without a hitch. I loved that all our food was served hot ready to eat. Appetizers: Ceviche, Guac & Chips Salsa were great. Drinks: Dodger Margarita, Tamarindo Margarita and other margaritas were very tasty and reordered by a few of us. They were perfectly mixed with just the right amount of alcohol. Went here yesterday and had a great time! We happened to catch the tail end of happy hour that is everyday from 5-6pm. Service was wonderful - the staff were very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is a fun little spot. Outside they have bar seating right along the side walk which could be fun if you are by yourself or with one other person. Inside they had a bar and then table seating around it. A note to parents with babies. They didn't have high chairs but they had booster seats. For food we had the carne asada nachos and ceviche from the happy hour menu. I had a salad with carne asada, my friends shared a Korean bbq burrito and my husband ordered the birria tacos. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food... the table definitely did go silent for a bit while we were all munching. I also really enjoyed the salsas as they had a good amount of heat to them. The chips were a little hard, but were still fine. They also have a great selection of margaritas. I only had the guava margarita but my friends ordered the margarita flight which is a great option plus it's part of the happy hour menu. This place is clearly very popular, almost every table and stool was filled when we arrived. We took two empty seats at the bar and were promptly ignored by the bartender/server who gave couples on either side who arrived after us menus and setups right away. So, not a great first impression. It also irks me to pay for chips in a Mexican restaurant, especially 8 bucks for a "lil" bucket of them plus another 6 bucks for a "mini" guacamole. And I normally salt my chips but that's not necessary at CaCao - they are already too salty. In fact, almost all of the food we ordered was too salty. My partner couldn't even finish his pollo asado quesadilla because of that. The house margarita was decent although not very potent. I see that the Mexicatessen has mostly four and five star reviews here. I guess they ordered less salty food and had more attentive service than we did. It's billed as "Mexicatessen" whatever that means. It's more of a bar. The place is small with some outside seating facing the street. We arrived at 6:00pm and although there was plenty of seating in the dinning area, we were directed to find a table in the bar area for whatever reason. Only a few tables with most displaying a sign stating "3 or more persons only" We were forced to take a stool at the bar or sit outside. Not our ideal deal dinning choice. When we asked why we couldn't seat in the dinning area, we were told "it's only open for parties of 4 or more" The food was average at best and took quite a while. I have to say I'm so so glad I discovered this spot.. I overlooked it so many times until I yelped it and saw that it had unique menu items. It was way more than a typical Mexican restaurant. There was a lot of unique and elevated options on the menu. We had the ceviche 100/5, the salsas 100/5, green enchiladas 100/5, mole fries, 100/5, koreano tacos 100/5, and the melon cucumber Agua fresca is the best I've ever had. Not joking, this place is top 5 Mexican spots in all of LA. There's plenty on the menu for everyone and the customer service is wonderful. This is a really nice spot to get some good food and drinks. Let me begin with the Quesadilla de Chochinita Pibil. This braised port is one of my favorite dishes with all the flavors slowly cooked to perfection. This quesadilla was on point from the meat to the lightly crispy the tortilla. I added some guacamole to each bite. Omg! my mouth was dancing in heaven. Paired with the Guva margarita was essential for this dish. The margarita was pretty amazing with a refreshing twist of tangy and sweetness favors. I really loved this margarita because it was not too sweet. It's a must try for sure. Next, my husband ordered the carne asada burrito and added the red sauce over his burrito aka wet burrito. He said the sauce was really spicy and over powered the burrito itself. So, I tried it and it was way too spicy for my tastebuds. I am sure the next time we go he will not het the red sauce on his burrito. For our dessert we decided to share the tres leches cupcake. It was really good and a good size. The whipped cream topping was really good with a touch of cinnamon. The leeches are on the bottom of this cupcake. we not really enjoyed it together. I've been meaning to come here for years as my hubby loves mole, and I heard theirs was pretty good. Pretty good? No, fabulous! He had chicken enchiladas mole with rice and beans and he wants to go back every week now! I had a chile relleno that was delicious and did I mention the chips and guac?!? The chips are fresh and warm and the guac is the creamiest I've ever had (no onions and tomatoes, in case that's your style preference) Drinks were good, prices reasonable for eating out nowadays. The service is top end! Vanessa was a doll, gave helpful suggestions when we told her we were first timers. She also gave us a cute gift bag of a jar of salsa and a coupon for free chips next time! Is this an authentic Mexican restaurant? Yes!! Are you paying a bit more for the quality and the likelihood that the location is costly? YES! Will you see innovative dishes like a Korean short rib taco, along with sashimi style ceviche, and a mezcal old fashioned? Hell yes!! The quality hasn't failed me in my 15 years of patronizing this excellent restaurant. I love the pressed tortillas, the guacamole (I'd rather it not be in a plastic container, admittedly--but it's still quite delicious), and the fish tacos are outstanding. In fact, ALL the tacos have such consideration of textures, balance of flavors, and distinctive in their deliciousness! The mole is outstanding, as are the beans and rice. That's why you pay extra for the beans and rice--because food costs $, and the beans are actually made traditionally, as is the rice. Some Yelp reviews unfairly knock down stars for pricing. Well, isn't this the deal you make when you go OUT to a restaurant, sit at someone's table, ask a team of people to wait in you, shop for you, and cook your food? When one complains about prices, that's like going out on a rainy day and complaining that you didn't bring an umbrella. Well friends, then perhaps just don't go OUT? When you see a menu with prices listed, you have a choice: You are free, at your core, to not pay for a meal that is out of your budget. Knocking down a star because you're unable to meet the prices required is misdirecting your own dissatisfaction that you're unable to pay.
