Food and Drinks: Potato Taco in a Flour Tortilla I was expecting the potato to be fluffy when biting into it, but they ended up being like home style potatoes that were steak fries thick. It tasted good, but was not what I was expecting or hoping for. Trinity Taco in a Flour Tortilla This was surprisingly really good and would have been down getting two of these instead of the potato taco. Arnold Palmer First round had more ice tea than lemonade, but my to-go version was definitely the right amount of lemonade to ice tea :) Experience: My friends and I decided to have brunch at this place before going to a nearby thrift store. They had a small basket filled with umbrellas outside for their patrons to use if they were waiting out in the sun for seating to be available. But it wasn't that busy when we came Friday morning. The place is so adorable inside and the cashier helping us was very friendly and highly suggested we get the tacos in their flour tortillas, which definitely made the tacos tasty. We had multiple staff checking in on us and getting us refills and making sure we were doing well in our little corner of the restaurant. Usually, if staff is too friendly and do a lot of table checks it makes me fee uncomfortable because I am not use to it in all restaurants that we go to. But definitely a plus for service since they really care about their customers and even asked if we wanted to take our last drink refills to go. I've been to the original location in Hollywood, and this one in Pasadena tastes just as good. On a Saturday at 10am, there was plenty of free street parking and space in their small parking lot. Breakfast is served all day. The restaurant is small, but feels spacious due to the open concept kitchen. Bar seating, tables for 2-4, and communal tables are available. Outside the dining hall, there is patio seating with some shade. The wooden furniture, bright natural light, and wall art give off a warm feel. Homestate is known for its housemade flour tortillas, but I also tried the regular corn. The flour was superior in my opinion, especially when warm. The tortilla was pillowy soft, with some chew and good flavor. The corn tortilla was also soft, but lacking in corn flavor. - Pecos taco ($5). Delicious! Tender shredded brisket and juicy scrambled egg. It tasted even better with the red and green sauces. - Brazos ($3.50). Taste was okay. There was more stuff in this taco than I expected, including sliced potatoes; I think mashed would have been better. The synergy between the rest of the toppings (cheese, guacamole, lettuce, jalapeno and pico de gallo) was inexplicably lacking. - Loaded Queso ($10). Filled with the works: a core of tomatoes, ground beef or beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream surrounded by creamy cheese. It seems like too much in one cheese dip, but it somehow works. I've been wanting to try this place out for a while! They have outdoor and indoor seating. You order inside before getting a table. We sat at the bar area In front of where they make the tortillas and food! It's awesome to see how they make fresh tortillas for the tacos. We ordered some breakfast tacos and some regular tacos, chips and guac! The guacamole was delicious! Tasted so fresh and yummy! The tacos were nothing spectacular and neither were their salsas. The service was great though. So many workers that passed by asked if we were good or if we needed anything. The toast was thinner than what I'd expect as Texas toast would be. I liked that they grilled one side of the toast and faced the crispy side in and left the soft side out. Got their ranch salad, good but would not get again (huge portion) - Their Frito pie - good but the ratio was not there for me. LOVE the open kitchen concept and the overall decor of the place. I heard so much hype about HomeState that my expectations were high. I was disappointed to find that the tacos were about the same level as what I would make at home. The only thing that made them slightly better were the housemade flour tortillas. Got a Guadalupe (eggs, chorizo, cheddar) which was mostly eggs and very light on the chorizo - so light that I couldn't even taste it. Also tried a chicken taco but the spicy anchiote marinade lacked any sort of kick. Overall, both tacos were bland and the salsas did little to offer much spice to them. My favorite were the crispy potatoes and lil' queso - kind of trashy cheese sauce but I don't make that stuff at home! HomeState has become a go to when I just want a nice simple breakfast! I am a huge fan of the Trinity taco on their fresh flour tortilla. The red and green salsas that come are perfect as I can't really handle heat and they add a nice pack of flavor. We tried the Brisket tacos today which were mid. Nothing exciting. The potato taco though was absolutely excellent. The dark chocolate salted cookie is definitely a must get. It is sweet but the salt adds a nice extra touch that brings the flavors together nicely. They have frozen Paloma and Margarita which are AMAZING! My favorite thing about this place has to be the ambiance though. Since my partner and one friend were carpooling with me, I made them stop by with me. Having been first-timers, they were not convinced - esp based on the price. I totally get it, but I was getting my tacos either way. We placed an online order for pick-up since my friend had told me that there were lines earlier in the week. We ordered 12 tacos for 4 of us, which was ready by the time we got there. The parking lot can be limited and confusing so street parking might be your best bet, especially if you intend to eat them there. Once we finally had the chance to eat them, my partner and friend quickly changed their mind! The quality of the ingredients were so fresh, tasty, and seasoned well...and that housemade flour tortilla was just the delicious cherry on top! My friend regretted only ordering 2 tacos for himself! I have ordered takeout before and tried their "anytime tacos" but I was really looking forward to coming back for their breakfast tacos. HomeState is Tex-Mex inspired and you know what they say, everything is bigger in Texas (including these delicious tacos). I got the Trinity and Guadalupe. Between the two, Trinity was definitely my favorite. I think it's because they put their potatoes in that taco. Overall it has eggs, cheese, bacon, and crispy potatoes. Top it off with their green salsa and you are good to go! The Guadalupe was satisfying as well, it comes with chorizo instead of bacon (and no potatoes). I would recommend ordering a side of queso and potatoes and snacking on that before your tacos. So good!! Surprisingly, they also have house cocktails. On the menu, you can find margaritas, Palomas, and other drinks to quench your thirst. I went for a non-alcoholic traditional pineapple drink. What? Texas tacos in SoCal? To be honest a Texas taco is really a burrito and they are more different than similar. Just like trying to order a burrito in Yucatán, the looks I got, priceless. Homestate is true to its Texas roots and takes me right back to The Riverwalk in San Antonio. The tortilla, cabbage, and filling was spot on. I would have like to seen a puffy on the board. it's about time i wrote about HomeState's breakfast tacos. first off, my first encounter with HomeState was a to-go order from the LA location near Barnsdall Art Park. although i don't recall what my friend and i got.. i remember scarfing down my two tacos, some chips + queso, and half of my friend's Migas order (sorry Nat..) in record time. ya girl was HUNGRY. FAST FORWARD to 2024 and i stopped by the Pasadena location. if you're not getting corn tortillas.. what are you doing?! comal (eggs, black beans, and monterey jack) and neches (eggs, refried charro beans, and cheddar) were the standout tacos and pecos (shredded brisket + scrambled eggs) was underwhelming due to the dryness of the brisket. i enjoy HomeState a lot since it puts a SoCal twist on Texas breakfast tacos. no pics THIS TIME because i demolished everything in my car before driving home hahah read more

I've heard great things about Homestate and finally got around to trying it. I got the chicken, potato, and trinity tacos along with a side of chips and queso. Surprisingly, my favorite of the three tacos was the chicken. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. As for the potato taco, the potatoes were masked by the spicy coleslaw. Lastly, the Trinity taco is overrated in my opinion. It's literally just eggs, cheese, and bacon. The side of chips and queso was not worth it. The queso was so bland I ended up adding the small side of red salsa into it, which made the queso 3x better. I do appreciate that they make their tortillas in house which is a nice touch. Who doesn't love Homestate?? I think my favorite taco is 'Don't Mess with Texas', then perhaps their potato taco, and their chicken taco. I do believe no matter the location you find yourself at, you will get good quality food. I have yet to be disappointed. This Pasadena location did not open too long ago, which their parking situation is not too bad either. There is parking lot right in front of their restaurant and on the side on the way out. The employees here were extremely nice as well. Through some Yelp research, it seemed like the brisket taco (all day taco) was one of their most popular ones, so I ordered that and a lil queso. A single tacos are quite big (for me at least since I'm so used to the street sized tacos) so this filled me up a good amount. The brisket was really soft and tender, the meat was great quality! The sauces that they offer you complement it really well too (I also liked how clean their sauce bottles were). Although, even though they may be famous for their tacos, I think actually liked their queso the most. I'm so used to "fake cheese" that once I tasted this one, I was like "wow this is real cheese" and it doesn't make you feel gross after eating so much chips and cheese.
