Not for Everyone! They will tell you personally... I came in tonight at 7:30...and didn't realize I wasn't supposed to sit myself. I should have realized when the waitress met me so ANGRILY. I'm sorry I did't realize. And then I pulled out my laptop, two iphones and a ton more of electronics....I'm the CEO of a company down the road...I travel most of the time, I can't work without my computers and 3 phones..... What a great restaurant. We were invited by friends for a birthday celebration. I have never been here and didn't know what to expect. Let me tell you, our waitress Sybil, was a delight. What a wonderful personality. She made us laugh and feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant. However it was a busy night. She was witty, sweet and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. The food was great. I had baked stuffed scrod, cooked to perfection. My meal included delicious soup. Pork barley, that made me want more. The spinach with my scrod was nicely spiced. I also couldn't resist the the tapioca pudding, that was sweet and tasty. Our friends had the specials, swordfish. They were quite pleased with their meal and took home leftovers. I had a taste of the homemade blueberry pie and it was great. I would recommend this restaurant in Exeter to anyone in the area. I'm a good cook and can serve steaks and seafood in multiple ways wonderfully. Unless I'm in a foreign land, when I go out to eat I want just good food at fair prices. I don't want $40 steaks or fish, $30 pasta dishes or mystery meals. Spare me the snooty servers or the college kids who were just taught to write their names upside down on the table setting. Meh. Nothing really worth stepping out of your usual route for. It's one of those local diners that hasn't been updated in many many years (old beer smell to boot), that locals go to, to get an average meal and a relatively cheap drink at the bar. I found this place to be quite cozy. I ordered the Baked Seafood special, and the Man ordered the 16oz steak with Bleu Cheese. We also had the Chili and Nacho's for a appetizer, which was of massive proportions. The only downside was that the menu didn't specify if the nachos had cheese on them ( Which yeah it might seem obvious, but we figured it to be just Chili and Nachos ). My stuffed Flounder, and shrimp was fantastic! As for the steak, it was cooked perfectly, and very tender! The drinks coming from the bar were also impressive, and cheap! This is local hangout at the bar with great drinks. The food is home style and fabulous for the money. I always get the stuffed founder with mornay sauce. You get 2 rolls of flounder with a great Ritz-based stuffing, a choice of soup or salad, choice of potato and 2 sides! There are daily soups or white or clear chowder. The salad is fresh and the blue cheese is great. They ask you if you want dinner rolls and bring 1 per person. This way they are not wasted, but you can get more. The sides include veggies, 3 bean salad, cole slaw, etc. If you are trying to be good on carbs, get 2 veggies. You get all this for just $13-$14. Other must haves; stuffed mushrooms... ask for with cheese, fried chicken (boneless with Ritz and saltine crust!), fish and chips. And of course a great vodka martini! Place is big and clean. There was no one around since I came in right after they opened at 11:30. But I hear they're packed on the weekends that some of the cars end up parking on the side of the main road. Kinda old-fashioned looking. Fireplace in the dining room. Hostess/staff was friendly enough. I had Fish and Chips but it was the worst I ever had. It smelled fishy. The lemon slice only helped a little bit. The filet was very thin. We had a family function here after a funeral. The waitstaff was overwhelmed and rightfully so, as they were two people short and we took up the entire restaurant and then some. They weren't that bad taking the circumstances into consideration. This place has a old and dark feel to it, it really needs a pick-me-up of sorts, maybe new bright paint, bright carpet. I don't know just something to freshen it up a bit. Just reminds me of a "hole in the wall" type place. Although, the bathrooms were quite acceptable for a really old dusty restaurant, they almost didn't fit in. The coffee was good, the food, not so much. We had an option of chicken, fish or beef. The chicken dish was cordon bleu, inside out if you will. The breading was flavorless and I'm pretty sure it was baked and not browned at all. I ate a small amount of the dry flavorless chicken, enough to take an edge off of my hunger. My sister had the fish, it was obviously frozen and stuffed, not too awful but nothing to order again. The steak was tiny and mediocre but my five year old enjoyed it, not sure if that's because he was starving or that he actually thought it was good. Who knows. I wouldn't choose to eat at this place again unless it was the only option. read more

The food is very good for what it is. It's a local place with good food and a cozy atmosphere. My girl friend and I go in a lot for dinner. We prefer to sit at the bar and they are always very accommodating to get us a seat at the bar. Lately we've been watching the NHL playoffs and they are on NBCSports which is only on one TV which they try to help us get in the right spot to see the game and always switch it to the right channel. The bartenders are great! They always make sure to greet you and get a drink started for you even if they're slammed busy! The food is great. Nice portions and good quality food. The stuffed chicken parmesan is great! My girl friend is a big fan that they make practically any meal as a small portion. They even make the nachos half portion (which are amazing too!) If the seafood cakes are on special make sure to get them. They are kind of like clam cakes on steroids! A bar full of local Exeter regulars. The food is boring and bland. When they tell you they've updated the menu, it's really not the food that updated just the design. The food IS consistent and the prices basically remain the same. If your looking for a good drink get a Nargoblaster... but only ONE, it will catch up to you fast. The wait staff are always nice and cheery. It's a place to bring the kids. The homestead is not bad. I swear every time I go they have the same items on special. The prices are low. I really like the white clam chowder. Clam cakes were small but tasted good. You can always get a good drink therethe pot roast special was really good & the fries were seasoned just right! The Caesar salad at the table next to me looked really good. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would! We came in for dinner a couple weeks ago, my wife, daughters, and one other couple. The food here tasted old, like musty in a way, and the meat in my dish seemed like it had gone bad. That smell! I wonder how they even stay open. The owner's son came over after we complained about the meal quality, which was almost inedible. We were told that if we don't like it there then we are free to eat elsewhere. The 2worst part was when he actually proceeded to sexually harass my 15 year old daughter by overtly checking her out and had a server ask her for her cell number as we were leaving This is a grown middle aged man. Definitely never going back and l am considering filing a complaint with the police for the inappropriate behavior toward my daughter. Seems the owner's son likes them underaged. Are you a fan of homestyle cookin' with consistency? This is your place! This is by no means a fancy restaurant with unique dishes. It is a family restaurant that provides consistency every time. There is no decorating of dishes. It is more of a meat and potatoes place. I have never been disappointed with the food here and I have been going since I was ten years old. The BEST thing to get here as far as appetizers is chowder, and their clamcakes are phenomenal. No weird extra added ingredients in the clamcake. And if you have a sweet tooth their desserts are terrific and homemade. No need to dress fancy here or forget the kids at home. It is a real laid back place for the locals of South County. read more

I live locally most of the year. . Years ago we would go to the Homestead for my parents/birthdays etc. I had forgotten all about it in the last 10 years. So here i was with my elderly mom, thinknng of going to the B/40 which is also pretty close. In the end, I chose the Homestead . It was perfect. We went on a Sunday at about 1pm, the waitstaff looked familiar, and i'm guessing that they were the same as years ago. THe waitstaff was extremely courteous to my mom and myself. I feel this is lacking with younger waitstaff. My mom had fried clams (generous and yummy), the carrots were cooked in a sweet sauce and definitely not canned, and the baked potatoes were perfect. Warm bread with butter and I got fried shrimp (which i'm always a bit apprehensive about). All meals delicious and Service outstanding. We are planning on going more frequently. read more

I ordered broccoli with my dinner and it was soggy and mushy so the waitress offered to give me a different veg. I asked for baby carrots. They were mushy. The waitress informed me they had been cooking all day. mashed potatoes were watery and lumpy . The bread my husband asked for was dry. Everything was not cooked properly. The place looks dingy and cheap. The place gets it's share of bar business .It's close to the university. If you're looking for cheap caned or frozen food that's been cooking all day go there. read more

I find that the Homestead is very consistent. As others have already said, you will never have a problem with a server there. The staff is very professional and efficient. The clamcakes and chowder are the best I've had in RI and they know how to deliver a steak that's perfectly medium rare EVERY time. My friend never orders anything but the very garlicky steak ala mama sandwich. They keep the fireplace going in the winter and it's just a nice home town gathering place that never pretends to be fancier than it is (I, for one, am tired of all the highly rated "gourmet" restaurants in South County that are just sooo average.). While visiting relatives in RI, I had my first visit on June 27th to the Homestead Restaurant for dinner. I was amazed to find a lovely home style restaurant with great foods and drinks at reasonable prices. The daily printed menu had an appetizer of escargot which very much surprised me as you usually don't see that in a non-French restaurant; so I had to try that and out came 12 delicious morsels in garlic butter ($6.95) which were very good. I also had the baked scrod ($12.50) with two sides and soup or salad. When I seen they had French onion soup, I had to get that ($1.50 upcharge) and it was some of the best French onion soup I had in a long time without visiting a French restaurant. We went back again on July 4th for dinner and this time I had the veal parm (14.95) and again the French onion soup. I noticed so many other diners with cocktails, I decided to order a Tanqueray gin martini and it was only $5.75, unheard of for premium liquor and it was a strong drink. Then we went for a third time for lunch on July 6th before I left for the airport and had one of the lunch specials; baked scrod ($9.95) and the French onion soup plus we shared an order of onion rings ($5.75). I must say I was surprised to find such a great place to eat in Exeter at such reasonable prices. I must try their clam chowder during the next visit but I have found that the Rhode Island chowders to be more of "potato chowders" whether clear, white or red with more potatoes than clams. I am use to the hardy New England clam chowder and the Manhattan clam chowder where clams are the main ingredient. read more
