Line was deep even at 3p so we figured let's give it a try. Wart #1 - the line/wait was dang long. Took us almost 1 hr to place an order. But the wait was made less stressful by the good music, fun interior vibe, chill crowd. We ordered the pulled pork, korean BBQ ribs, coleslaw, corn bread and brisket. The food was frigging delicious...and friggin expensive. Wart #2 - this place is expensive. But the moment the food hits your lips? It's all worth it. When we got here we were quite surprised how long the line was, wrapping almost the entire way inside the building. Sadly, the line did not move particularly quickly either. After over an hour, we finally got to the front of the line and ordered. Most items were available right away, but the Korean style ribs were going to be a while so they gave us a number for our table to bring those out. The cashier did ring up the order a bit wrong, charging us for a large slaw when we only got a regular size. Luckily I caught this and he was able to fix it before we paid. We then had to go to the bar to order sodas. Overall the brisket was good but the rest of the food could have been better, especially the corn bread. I was so excited to bring my God daughter and her family to this restaurant because she loves ribs but what ah disappointment. It's my second time coming to this bbq joint and as my 10 year old said the best part was her soda and the music. The ribs tasted funny, texture was like straw which makes it inedible, the brisket was also dry plus that 3 short slices could not have weight 1/2pound, potatoes salad is mashed and had too much vinegar the mac n cheese was ok. Consistency on a great product is what keeps customers coming back for more,you have just lost 5 bbq lover's. Came here around 6:30 and finally got to order at 8:30. The long wait here is pretty normal for hometown so that was expected. However, when you do order make sure they charge your for the right amount that you ordered. I ordered 3 lb of brisket but got charged for 3.5 lb. The brisket here is pretty good. They cut you nice thick cuts that are very juicy. If I come back I'd definitely be getting more of those.The ribs we got were pretty lukewarm and pretty tough to eat honestly(especially the end piece they gave to us). The smokey taste was definitely there though but overall I think they can be better. We got a bunch of other sides that seemed pretty average. I liked the Italian sausage but wish they had more snap to them since they seemed mostly soft. One other thing to note was how the corn bread was so dry and hard that it bent the plastic fork we used to eat. read more

Always a treat when I'm in the red hook area! My go tos are the pastrami bacon and brisket. The pastrami bacon comes with a sauce that pairs so well. Cole slaw is one of my favorites as sides! The food here was decent, but I expected more given the price point and the long wait. I arrived around 30 minutes post-opening, and ended up waiting about 45 minutes in line. Sad, I know- but hey your boy will do anything for good food. What I tried: Pork ribs- a touch of vinegar and pepper, which was a nice contrast to the other meats. A little tough for my liking and lukewarm. Brisket- super tender (almost fall-apart) and rich, but not as smoky as I would have liked. Definitely ask for fatty brisket. Beef rib- Very peppery, and nice textural contrast between jerky like exterior and soft, fatty interior. Wish there were more smoke flavor. Pastrami bacon- wish there were more of a pastrami flavor, but very juicy and fatty. Nice dipping sauce of honey mustard which paired well. Ask for the corner pieces so you can get that extra crunch from the sides!! The additional flakey salt just knocks this out of the parkkkkk Another protip: ask them for fatty brisket. You 100% need FAT in the brisket because it is otherwise a very lean cut of meat. The fatty pieces are more moist and just overall taste better! The jerk rib tips do not taste like jerk sauce at all. I can confidently say that this is the best BBQ in the tri-state area. It's not Texas level, but (narrowly) beats flying to Texas just for BBQ We came on a Friday lunch. Took us a while to find street parking, as most of the close areas do not allow parking on Fridays around noon. But we were still able to get to the restaurant by 11:45. We'd planned on arriving early to avoid the line, but there was just 2 group of people in front of us. I'd say that you can arrive any time... even when we left before, the line wasn't bad at all. Ordered a few things: -brisket: this was really good... very tender. I do wish the bark was a bit more flavorful though (could do with a bit more seasoning), and also would be better if they gave you the choice between cut from point or flat (would've liked a fattier piece from the point) -jerk ribs: this was a disappointment... they overcooked the ribs! They were a little burnt, and therefore not moist, nor fall-of-the-bone. I did love the flavor though (strong herb taste), so will give this another shot. In fact, I did buy another rack to take home, and found that to be much better -lamb belly: this was my first time having lamb belly. This had a strong gamey lamb flavor, so as a huge lamb-fan, I loved this. I can see this being too strong though for people who do not LOVE lamb. This dish alone increased the rating by at least a star Sides: -beans/burnt ends were awesome. I ate the following, Beef Rib,Chicken Tacos,Queso Brisket dip :) and washed it down with a Bloody Mary. Which happened to have bacon in it --which is the right way to make a Bloody Mary. Visited on weekday night. Place was lightly packed. Plenty of street parkings available. The waiter checked our vaccination card. This place is pretty self-service restaurant. Low-key, southern style interior. I grew up in Texas, up to undergrad. I really have to say... that this place is better than most of bbq places in Texas. I visited Texas a week after visiting here. I still think this place is better than most of them. Brisket was so tender and juicy. Baby rack rib was incredibly good. Well cooked, very well spiced. Sausage was okay but im not a fan of sausages, so i cant comment too much on the sausage. Mac and cheese and cole slaw was mediocre. My mac and cheese was kind of hard. Cornbread was very good. Spent a few years eating my way through Texas bbq and this is probably some of the best brisket and beef rib I have had in the northeast. Brisket was super moist and had a great bark. The bill quickly adds up, but that's to be expected, because you'll want one of everything and it's meat, so of course it has a price tag. Collard greens here are not my favorite, but still good. Corn bread is warm and sweet. Banana pudding - one piece of advice, DO NOT SHARE, Get your own!! And the saddest thing, it feels like they designed this wait on purpose because they have one cashier with 3 guys trying to prepare orders for hundreds of people. They love to chat. take their time to put a slab of already cooked meat to a plate. we have a small sandwich shop in my neighborhood and they sell much less volume a day even they have 2 cashiers and more people work in the back. You Randomly see confused waiter guys walking around with ribs trying to find who ordered them. Food is regular bbq but ordering is designed by probably drunk people never thought about how to organize a restaurant. But maybe their business model is not about food, maybe they make money primarily from selling alcohol to people waiting 2-3 hours in a line. No sober person can take that stupidity. This place is amazing!! We ended up here yesterday for a late lunch and omg I am so impressed. They have the menu up on the wall, and there are great selections, a variety but not too much as to where you would be concerned with freshness. I had the htbc sandwich and it slaps as the kids say. Smoked turkey, jam, tomatoes, lettuce and Mayo on Texas toast. I hossed so much of this tasty sandwich. We also had some awesome sides, the coleslaw was flavorful and crunchy, the cornbread was perfect and slathered in a honey butter, the potato salad was awesome and had something slightly vinegary about it which I loved, the greens were cooked to perfection! I tried the pulled pork sandwich it was awesome, with just the right amount of sauce, also had some bites of the lamb bah mi, and a bbq version of lamb is awesome. A great alternative to the japanese food in japan village but on the pricy end when you compare food options. For 2, we got the 1/2 lb brisket and 1/2 spare ribs with a side of mac and cheese and collard greens. I would pass on the mac and cheese, there are better out there and this wasn't cheesy enough. Collard greens were a great way to cut the fat from the brisket and spare ribs. I would get the brisket again since I feel like it is more bang for your buck compared to the ribs which came with 3. Their hometown sauce was a great compliment for the meat. There is an outdoor seating area which is nice. Service was your regular fast casual place. I have been following Bill Durney, the owner of Hometown BBQ for years. He comes to Texas often to learn from the best Texas pitmasters, and goes back to Brooklyn and puts his own twist on Texas BBQ. When I was recently in Brooklyn for a few days, there was no doubt that I was going to hit up Hometown BBQ. After a short Uber ride I was ecstatic to smell the intoxicating smell of good BBQ, knowing I was about to have a great experience. It was so hard to narrow down what all I was going to order. I had to get at least one of his special creations like sticky Asian pork ribs, or lamb Bahn MI. I decided on the Bahn MI, a slice of moist brisket and burnt ends. My wife got a brisket sandwich and queso Mac and cheese. Let me say, that lamb belly Bahn MI with spicy BBQ sauce is ridiculous! I'm not a BBQ sauce guy, but this sauce is sooo good. Old leather would be good with this sauce on it. Don't let that take anything away from sandwich. The brisket rivals the best brisket Texas house. Queso Mac and cheese, let that sink in for a minute. I will preface this review with a disclaimer: I fell in love with midwestern style BBQ while in the Mecca of sorts, Kansas City, MO! Once you have had that level of smoky, juicy goodness, one's palate is automatically changed, even elevated. Consequently, Hometown Bar-B-Que did not quite hit the mark. I went on a beautifully sunny afternoon where there was no wait and the staff was super attentive more-so than at other restaurants that were offering grab-and-go type outdoor dining. Even given those pluses, I was underwhelmed. We ordered both fatty and lean brisket cuts which were quite juicy but missing rich smoky flavor that I have grown accustomed to. The Mac & cheese and collard greens were bland as well. There was no black pepper or hot sauce on hand so everything had to be eaten as is. I would hope that I caught them on a day where they were running low on seasoning and had to be sparse with everything as a result. Is it punishable by law that I've never written a review for Hometown? It's quite possible. However there's much more illegal things I've done and gotten away with so this can slide too. As someone whose traveled around the country looking for amazing barbecue, I can attest that this is easily the best in New York City. Hands down. It's on par with some places in Texas. I'm not saying better, but could be as good as some. Let's not get crazy here. What to get? Everything. The pork belly and brisket are musts. The sides are fantastic too, but if you're going for the first time and deciding between more meat and a side, go for the meat. Pre pandemic I highly recommended you think about what time you want to eat and arrive an hour before hand. You can get drinks while you wait in line. Unless you're by yourself, which is cool too, but you won't have anyone to hold your spot. Nowadays you place your order for pickup. Made spur of the moment plans for lunch with friends at Hometown Barbeque. We aimed for the noon opening time, arriving ten minutes early to find a queue of people already waiting. Shortly after, the doors opened, and we stepped inside. Seeking variety, we ordered a few meats and several sides. Too early to start drinking, I opted for a cup of water from one of the coolers dispersed around the interior. Let's start with the brisket: sublime. Tender meat that fell apart with the prodding of a fork. I had to pinch myself to be sure I wasn't dreaming. Fine on its own or with sauce. The pulled pork was also excellent. I added some to the queso mac and cheese, which brought it over the top. You gotta try that combination. I could see myself eating this pork on a sandwich for sure. The pastrami bacon was a fantastic and novel treat, a tasty sideshow, though not intended as a main act. The remaining sides were collard greens, potato salad, and cornbread. For a minute I was worried we had overdone it, but we just barely polished it off. Hands down the best barbeque I've had in Brooklyn. Getting there early is a smart move.
