Hondo's is a staple in Fredericksburg. We went on a day that had perfect weather, and we sat outside. You order at the bar and pick up your order at a food counter when it's ready. It's a laid back casual place, and we loved it! We had the ribs, the fried catfish, and a bacon cheeseburger. All of it was fresh, hot, and tasty. The fish and ribs were not the best we've ever had, but still very good. They use freshly grated cheese for their cheese toppings and additions. It's a great touch and tastes great!! Food was very good but the service was not. My wife and I had lunch here while staying in town for a weekend. The food itself was tasty and well prepared. The reasons for the low rating is two things. First - there were two men clearing tables. They were very pushy and I felt they were pressuring us to leave. It was not busy. Second - one of these men came and asked if I was done. When I said no he then pointed at some string onion rings - and put his finger in it. I was literally speechless. Normally I am very outspoken but in this case I was taken back. I know stuff happens it's a mistake. But the guy didn't say a word and simply walked away. If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would! It's a self-serve setup, which I don't mind, but after ordering the brisket plate with mashed potatoes, our food was ready in under five minutes, raising my suspicions. When we picked it up, the mashed potatoes were ice cold and the brisket was mostly fat, smelling off as if it had been sitting out for days. It was slathered in BBQ sauce, presumably to hide the unpleasant odor and taste. It was so unappetizing that my husband tasted his and about threw up and I left my plate untouched and we walked out. My friend and I had the Mahi Mahi Sandwich and the Blue Ribbon BBQ Bacon Burger as well as the sweet potato fries. The BBQ Burger was better and we liked the onion strings. There wasn't anything special honestly about the Mahi Mahi Burger. Also one star down for the fries, as they didn't seem fresh and were cold. The food was the best I've ever had for this type of cuisine. The American style food was just awesome. So much food for the price and it was all either 9 or 10/10 we had queso and the bacon and fried onion burger and the quesadillas and it was amazing. My potatoes were bland but I didn't order my fried steak for the potatoes . Pulled pork queso tastes the same as we remember from years ago ! We had eaten here before but sat inside this time. As I walked inside I could smell barbecue so I decided that was what I'd have to eat. The sandwich was the perfect size, full of chunks of tender brisket, bbq sauce, pickles and onions. The bun was just right to hold in all the yummy food, tender too. He had the cheddar bacon burger that he said was good with the lettuce tomato & onions. The basket of curly fries was more than enough for 2 people, it was hot and tasty. They show you to your seat upon arrival with a card that explains to order your food & drinks at the bar then the pager notifies you when it's ready so you walk over to pick up your tray & utensils. They will bus the table. Overall it seems to work very well. Great place with a variety of good food. read more

What a great little spot! I'd give it a 4, but I'll have to have a 2nd visit before I can go to 4th base with Hondo. My girlfriend and I were in town for the day and met this awesome couple while at a local winery. We all decided we wanted to keep the fun alive and have dinner together before we headed back to ATX, enter Hondo's. The back patio was fabulous. We were greeted in a covered walkway, safe from that July sun, by a sweet hostess. She told us she'd grab us if something came available inside, but seated us right away on the patio. The menu is straight forward and everything we ordered was pretty good. I was a BALLOON before we left, so the ride home was quiet LOL. The bartender was slow as molasses, but sweet as a peach. Once we were moved inside, there was live music on the stage that leveled up the vibe. I got the Blue Ribbon Bacon Burger. You may have noted Im a sucker for Blue Cheese and beef if you've stalked my profile at all. It had crunchy onions and BBQ sauce on it too! YUM! We all had the queso dip and sweet potato fries to share. I feel like there was potato salad in there somewhere, but I may have eaten that off someone's plate. :/ It was all pretty darn tasty. All in all, I say 3 stars because Hondo's is one of those places one can count on for a good time with friends. As long as you're in good company, it's great. There is nothing phenomenal about the ambiance, food, or service here, and I had no complaints about anything but the slow drinks (funny, the Diet Coke for my girlfriend took the longest! LMAO). So, grab some friends, sip a few margaritas, and stuff your faces while you listen to whatever music they've got going in here. We have visited Hondo's on many other occasions and always had a good experience. Tonight we tried to go about 8:20 and The young guys on the patio that were seating people outside were very disappointing. There were many empty tables. They didn't even greet us. Simply told us it would be a 30-40 minute wait and the kitchen closed in 30 mins. With many empty tables, we simply walked away. read more

Hondo's was a bit of a let down for me. We ordered the fried steak with mashed potatoes and also the Mac and cheese with brisket. The fried steak cost about $16 and was under seasoned - it wasn't all that great to be honest. Sadly, I would have much rather eaten Dairy Queen's steak fingers for less than half the price here. The Mac and cheese with brisket tasted good but I wish there was more brisket. This place is self serve. You order at the counter and then pick up your own food and silverware when it's ready. The good thing is that you don't have to tip your standard 15 percent when they give you the receipt to sign. The cups at the self serve area were a bit questionable because of the stains on some of them. We weren't huge fans of this restaurant but maybe we went on an off day or something. read more

I never leave bad reviews and truly wanted to like this spot, seems like a nice patio/live music situation, but this was an ABSOLUTE bust. I got a hondo burger with cheddar and I spit the first and only bite I took into a napkin. It tasted like fish and was super pink. I wonder if it was in the freezer next to fish? I wanted to throw up after that. We also got the green chile enchiladas which was like a bowl of soup, also gross, and VERY chile flavored, like super over powering. Queso for the table - it was okay, but the fresh jalepenos were still clearly frozen. Also unappealing. Lastly, we got the kids cheese quesadilla which was not bad until I looked at my child's hand and it looked wet like she'd stuck it in water bc of the grease... it was that oily. So so gross. Okay went for dinner tonight 7/25/20 the place was mobbed. They said 1 1/2 wait and since we had heard good things we decided to wait. My first impression was it looked like they were disorganized with a lot of help. The line for the bar took way to long not sure why because this is the major profit center. When my wife finally got our drinks mine was strong. That's a good thing. The problem is we did not want to get back in Lind for a second. When we got called for our table after 1 1/4 hour things got so much better. Our server Jarvis was outstanding. We ordered quickly and were served quick. We only wanted drinks so the hostess directed us to the outdoor bar. Service is fast and the bartender makes a proper stiff drink! I was pleasantly surprised by the cost of 6 drinks (~ $40!). It's casual and easy and great. Since it was around 8:30 p.m., we couldn't sit at a table yet since they were still serving food. But after 9 p.m., we were able to take over a table. Let me begin by saying we didn't stay and eat, although we tried. Hondos has nice outdoor seating. Not a lot of shade and picnic tables. Keep in mind you will not be served at your table. This is a self-service food restaurant. There is a line to order food, another line for drinks, then a line to pick up your food. Fredericksburg is very busy on weekends and so is this restaurant. The food was very quickly made which was a plus because we were starving. The burgers hit the spot (kid's burger was plenty for me) and I loved the thick bread-- really holds it all together well.
