Long shag/layered haircut, bangs, and face-framing highlights.

I've been looking for a new stylist closer to where I live and I am so grateful I met Vanessa at Honey&Hive! I haven't had a haircut in months and my hair was *suffering*. I found Honey&Hive on yelp so I called on a Thursday and was booked right away for Friday with Vanessa. I really appreciated that she reached out to me to send her pics of what my current hair looked like and inspiration pics of what I'm going for. On the day of the appointment, she asked all the right questions - how much length do I want off, how many highlights I wanted, how light do I want them to go, etc - AND also talked me through the process. My hair is black so I knew we might need another session to lighten it up to a cooler tone, and I'm glad she talked about that too. Just by talking with me about my vision for my hair, she immediately gained my trust in her talent! At the end of my appointment, my hair came out exactly how I wanted! I am sooo happy with how it turned out. Her service was incredible and I sincerely feel like I've found my new go-to hair stylist. Thank you Vanessa!

I've been cutting my own hair since college (20 or so years). Pretty straight forward fade with leftovers on the top to style. My wife had recommended that I actually GO GET my hair cut, and wow, I'm so glad that I did! First off, I really loved the vibe in this salon. The exposed brick and texture of the overall salon was awesome. I made my appointment with Vanessa. She was so cool! She was easy going, asked specific questions as to how I wanted my hair cut - almost like she knew me! She also kept the conversation flowing great - which is great as if she didn't talk to me I would've fallen asleep because of how relaxing the haircut/environment were. Went with Sarah less than a week before my wedding for a haircut a couple months ago. For curly/wavy girlies just spend money in an actual textured professional, especially if you have any important event coming up. I made an appointment with her for time reasons trusting her instagram posts. On arrival to the appointment I showed her a previous haircut I had for reference and I told her I wanted a short framing in the front and bangs. The appointment went ok, the chat was pleasant. She did a wet cut which is ok and as soon as she was done she did a blow dry to my hair without showing me my hair length or shape BEFORE stylizing my hair. I was ok with that since I showed her a reference picture and I was trusting her skills. I had to keep asking to do my bangs shorter since she kept leaving them too long but she did. Once the appointment was done she showed me the back of my hair with a mirror and with the blow dry she did it looked good but I definitely couldn't tell about the actual shape since she styled it and I decided to trust the process. The next day after washing and doing my hair normally I did notice that the framing I asked for was not symmetrical and some of my clumps looked extremely uneven/flimsy; along with realizing that the back looked like it had a straight cut so I panicked because I had my wedding coming up next week and my hair turned out not how I asked. Uppon realizing that I send her a text asking if she does corrections/adjustments for previous haircuts and then I proceeded to sent her images via Instagram going into detail, I asked if she could squeeze me before or after her scheduled appointments but she took about 22-23 hrs to respond and her response was telling me that I could've said something when I was still on the chair and that she will not give me a full haircut (I never asked ask for a full haircut, I just wanted corrections about framing and the general shape if possible). Her response came out as unprofessional and entitled in my opinion which left me absolutely no desire to come back. A couple minutes after she sent some other messages with a less rude demeanor but after the initial "you could've said something here" and the unnecessary "and I won't be giving you a full haircut" I wasn't feeling like trusting her with my hair. I will leave the screenshot and images for reference to be transparent. It definitely seems like she got offended somehow even when the haircut she gave me looks nothing like what I asked. Seems like the problem to her is that I trusted her skills and I didn't micromanaged the haircut. Left a review on her page and she brushed off her mistakes without acknowledging her rude behavior. I wish her initial response would've been nicer and not so "and I'm not giving you a full haircut.", "you were in my chair. You could've said something.", and "I did give you a mirror so you can see"(taking in mind she gave me the mirror when she was done drying and not when she was done cutting the length). She knew the haircut was for my wedding and she was still pretty mean. read more

I needed to get my hair cut and this salon had excellent reviews and seemed to be highly recommended. I visited Honey and Hive Salon's website and it directs new customers to fill out a form. It says that someone would reach out 24-48 hours later to book an appointment. It all sounded great! I submitted the form Sunday and I was not contacted within that timeframe, so I called Wednesday and the young lady I spoke to assured me that someone would call me by the end of the day. She did not offer to book me an appointment and I even mentioned I was trying to get something for Friday. It is now Thursday night and I have not received a call, I'm really disappointed- I heard really great things about this salon but it seems to be impossible to get an appointment. I will have to take my business elsewhere, what a shame. read more

I have to come on here and say that I have never been so pleased with a hair stylist ever! Jess G, is personable, relatable, fun, and easy to talk to. She listens! She accomplished exactly what I wanted. I feel that sometimes hair stylist aren't the best organized when booking appointments and keeping them , but that isn't the case with Jess G. Sarah is absolutely amazing!! I scheduled an appointment with her to style my hair for a wedding and I can't recommend her enough. She took the time to not only apply my extensions for a fuller look but also cut and re-sew them together so that they fit around my head better. She also taught me how I can apply them at home myself and took a video explaining the process in case I forgot. She is so detail oriented and always offered tips and tricks to help me improve the health of my hair. The style was even more beautiful than I had anticipated and received so many compliments at the party. All the while she has the sweetest person inside and out, and truly cares about everyone that sits in her chair. Jennifer was absolutely AMAZING with our 10 yr old daughter. She was engaging and so sweet to her. My daughters hair looked beautiful and Jennifer styled it exactly how my daughter wanted it! I'm super excited for my haircut in a couple weeks! I HIGHLY recommend this salon. It was also very clean. Coffee or water was immediately offered. I've been going to see Jess G. at Honey and Hive Salon for almost two years now. My hair has never looked better! I have brown hair and highlights can always be a bit tricky with getting that "right shade of blonde" but she always knocks it out of the park! I have a lot of confidence in her as a seasoned stylist and trust her to make me feel beautiful when I walk out the salon doors afterwards! I was referred to Dara by a good friend, (also a hairstylist) being that I sought an expert in hair color, in particular. That was 5 years ago, Dara's been my go to, ever since. Without question, she is a master in color, and a perfectionist in both my cut and color. I credit her with the patience that it takes, especially, dealing with my waistline long hair. Never, do I feel rushed. The shop is located in the center of charming La Mesa Village, a nice break away, on a busy day. Friendly professional staff, exceptional service, and a cheerful bright atmosphere, I love the vibe here. Based on my experiences there, it comes highly recommended. Just gorgeous!! Jessica Sinado has been cutting my hair for years now. I get so many compliments on my curls people always ask is that a Perm. Nope just good hair care. The salon it's self is gorgeous always clean, no dust on product. They always offer coffee especially when I forget since I'm a new mom. The staff is always nice and friendly. Dara at Honey & Hive is a life and hair saver! Long story short, I got my hair done in LA and when I got home I realized it had a lot of blotchy patches (especially near the hairline) and I didn't want to drive all the way back up there to have it fixed. My best friend goes to another hairdresser at this salon, so I tried to go with her (Jessica) to have her fix my hair but she wasn't available and recommended Dara. I was a little nervous but my friend and her hairdresser Jessica ensured me that everyone there does amazing hair and they were right! Dara not only took me without knowing me at all, but was so detail oriented and took her time adding in more highlights to even out the blotchy areas and also to add in more dimension to my hair. She also noticed the cut wasn't very even so she fixed that as well! She gave me tips on how to better care for my hair (purple shampoo, wearing a hat in the sun and protective spray before using heat) and overall she was just great! She's also just beautiful, kind, funny, and was just really nice to be around! I will definitely be booking with her again! Thank you so much Dara! I love my hair again!! read more

Booked an appointment for cut and color today and it was smooth as can be. Cynthia was my stylist and she did an amazing job. Her attention to detail and suggestions made the finished look few so fresh and hair full of life again. Looking forward to using this location and Cynthia for all my future trims and touch ups. I had been searching high and low for someone who can cut curly hair without the insanely high prices that are normally required. Sure enough I read about Dara and saw that she herself had the most beautiful natural curly hair so I decided to give it a shot! Best decision, she took such good care of me, super responsive to my texts and worked with whatever I asked her to do. She also gave me tips and tricks for my hair and helped me find a shampoo and condition for my hair type! Haven't trusted anyone else since I found her! Highly recommend giving this spot a try. I'm a natural brunette who goes blonde and we all know how costly it is - I've truly tried to love my dark hair, but it just isn't it for me. And to be honest, I've had many experiences of going to the high end salons where it feels like I'm a burden to the hairstylist and it stinks. I really haven't found my hair girl until coming here and meeting with Jen who is new to the salon and SUPERB at her job. She KNOWS WHAT SHES DOING!! And not only that, she's so humble, kind, attentive, sweet, and just overall a sunshine to be around. She truly wanted to interact and get to know me, gave me a partial highlight but I look like I did a full because her attention to detail was INSANE, she offered to walk out w an umbrella for me as it was raining outside, and she just was so good at making sure all notes were covered. I truly cannot tell you how many people have stopped to tell me how beautiful my hair looks and she cut my hair to the cutest long layered haircut where i get to do fun blowouts now and its so cute!! I was able to get a receptionist on the phone but because she was new was unable to assist. I was directed to contact the individual hairdressers via Instagram. This required me to follow their page before I could message them. Really, really inefficient. In the meantime, I was able to locate another salon and hairdresser via Vagaro and book an appointment. These professionals may be great, but having an easy way to book will get more clients. In this day and age, the instantaneous booking is the bar and this place doesn't meet it. It is a hurdle/challenge to just get an appointment. I am sure these people are nice and are probably good at what they do.

They didn't ignore me, but they just didn't get it. And they didn't realize they didn't get it, either. They aren't bad people -- not at all. Nobody was mean. But they didn't connect with the idea that disabilities change how people interact with mundane things like haircuts. This is really common. These stylists weren't worse than other people. They were better than most people. They were nice. The haircut was good quality. But I won't be going back.

The red flags began days before my actual appointment: 1. Deposit & Bookkeeping Confusion: Days prior on Mon 7/27, Karissa the stylist texted me asking about my $50 deposit and claiming other clients were waiting for the chair. I had already paid it, but she had no record or awareness of receiving it on her end. While the deposit issue was eventually resolved, it was concerning that she couldn't track her own payments. 2. Scheduling Mistakes: Today, of my appointment, while I was actively driving to the salon, Karissa, texted asking if I could come in earlier than 2:30 PM. I had to remind her that my appointment was actually scheduled for 2:00 PM, a mistake she admitted to. 3. When I arrived, the appointment lasted only a few minutes. I brought in standard reference photos as general ideas to ask for her professional opinion on what would work best for my hair. Instead of offering expert guidance, she panicked, became defensive, and claimed we "weren't on the same page." She accused me of being impossible to satisfy and refused to touch my hair entirely. She did return my $50 deposit, but turning a client away after messing up the schedule, failing to track payments, and refusing to conduct a basic consultation is unacceptable. A professional should be confident in their skills, manage their business properly, and communicate constructively. Save your time and find a stylist who actually knows how to handle a consultation. ‐---------------------------------------------- Tiffany, Thank you for the response. While I understand technical issues happen, cell service disruptions don't account for missing payment records or defensive behavior during a consultation. Communication & Scheduling: A T-Mobile outage does not explain how a recorded $50 deposit payment was forgotten, nor does it make receiving panicked texts about double-booked chairs or wrong appointment times while en route any less unprofessional. Calling these "simple accidents" minimizes the impact on the client's time and experience. The Consultation: Showing inspiration photos while explicitly stating what I don't like in them is standard practice to help guide the stylist. Rather than taking a collaborative, professional approach to educate or offer expert recommendations on grey-blending, Karissa became panicked and defensive, accusing me of being impossible to satisfy before turning me away in the chair. Refusing to conduct a proper consultation and blaming the customer when things feel overwhelming is not professional service. Returning a deposit is the absolute bare minimum, but it does not make up for the disorganization and poor treatment experienced today. Break‐-------- Tiffany, To clarify, Karissa did not hold my seat for an extended period. She requested the $50 deposit during our text exchange on Wednesday, July 22nd. While I initially mentioned paying on Friday, I submitted the payment early on Thursday, July 23rd. Framing this as a favor is inaccurate; her approach was unprofessional and demonstrated a distinct lack of confidence in her service. Furthermore, Manager Tiffany explicitly confirmed that Karissa's actions violated company policy. This clearly demonstrates that Karissa was operating unprofessionally and outside approved guidelines, making it even more unreasonable to act like she did me any favors..............

I'm new to this salon, but not new to my stylist, Liz Josephson. I love that the salon is in downtown La Mesa, right in the heart of all the great shopping and restaurants La Mesa has to offer. As for my stylist, Liz has been doing my hair for at least 7 years now, and you couldn't pay me to see someone else. Her ability to combine both what I want and her own techniques equals perfection on my head. Her desire to grow and learn about her industry adds to her aptitude to produce the perfect cut and color. She often tells me about new techniques shes learned as a means of offering variety and fun to my style. I trust her to have fun with my hair as she has proven time and again that she does what looks best on me considering the shape of my head, texture of my hair, and the way it grows and falls. I'm not the professional, I don't see what professionals sees, that's why I see a professional. That's Liz. My color is always on point, the cut is always perfection, and I always leave with the softest, silkiest texture. I highly recommend Liz. This review is for Sarah RIOS, who I followed from her previous salon in January 2025, after the salon owner closed the business. There are more than one Sarah's at this salon, and only one Sarah started in January 2025, so I want to be clear about which Sarah this review is for. When it's hair day, I always look forward to seeing Sarah. She knows the style and colors I prefer. I like to change it up periodically and Sarah makes suggestions to accomplish the results I'd like to achieve, and she always delivers. She is so talented, framing my face just right, coloring and highlighting to produce beautiful results. If I ask for something that's not achievable she is an expert at showing me what is possible, and she is always right. The last time I went to see her, I asked her about lightening my base color. We had a plan for highlights the following month, so Sarah lightened the base, and added a gloss, and I am so happy with the results! I'm so happy I found Sarah RIOS ! Decided to try out the salon for my Highschool graduation, and I was fortunate enough to have Sarah as my stylist! The service was great and even though I was nervous, she was great at keeping the conversation going! And when the conversation would dwindle she made sure to grab my attention to ensure the style was to my liking. So no need to worry about missing steps! And if you want something changed don't be afraid to say something! She's very attentive to your preferences! Towards the end of the service we took some pictures and I left a very happy customer ready for my graduation! I LOVE KAT! Aka Kathleen Harris. Kat has been cut and coloring my hair for 15+ years now. Even when I lived in LA, I would make a special trip to La Mesa to have her do my hair - YES, she's that awesome! Very professional and personable, she will pamper you with the best head massage while washing/conditioning your hair, then cut and color all the while letting you know what she's doing and why... extremely informative. The Salon is fantastic as well - updated by the new owners, it's fresh and in style making you comfortable and relaxed while there. Suzanne (salon owner) has been my hair stylist for 15 years. Quite frankly, I think she is a hair genius. I've referred all of my friends & family to her, and they all love her. One of the things that impresses me most is her dedication to learning and applying new techniques. She keeps up with trends, and knows how to adapt them to people like me (who are not willing to do a lot of the "work" hair usually involves), but still want to appear stylish. I called in the morning and thankfully Sarah answered and was able to see me so last minute. I came in with a mess of a hair and feeling supper uncomfortable with it and not myself. She was super sweet through out the whole process and really asked me what I wanted and took her time making me feel beautiful. 10/10 would recommend Sarah Murad for doing wedding hair and makeup! Three weeks before my wedding my original stylist up and canceled on me and never having met me Sarah swept in and saved my big day. We had one 15 min consultation the day before my wedding, no trial run, and it was absolutely perfect! She is so sweet, professional, and just simply amazing at what she does. Today, I had my first appointment with Sarah, and I truly cannot recommend her enough! She did an amazing job cutting my curly hair (it was also my first curly cut). Sarah took the time to understand what I wanted and provided expert advice on how to manage and style my curls. The end result was fantastic--my hair has never looked better.
