We have been here a few times now and I thought I would get around to writing a review. There is a good selection of items to order, and most of what we have ordered we would order again. We have really enjoyed the Sui Mai! We recently purchased a steamer, so that we can buy them frozen from here to cook at home. The Rice Noodle with Spare Ribs sounded so good, but turned out to be the most disappointing. There was quite a bit of a tasty sauce, which is always a good thing, but the lack of meat, abundance of bone particles to work around, and the stack of rice noodles "clumpled" together made this dish not very enjoyable to eat. We recently ordered a 10" cake and I must say that I was impressed by the care taken in the decoration, it was very well done. There was plenty of fresh fruit inside and on top of. I felt that the cake itself was a little dry for me, but the rest of the flavor was spot on. read more

*DURIAN CAKE REVIEW* This review is specifically for the Durian sponge cake. Prior to ordering the cake, I was told I only needed maybe 2 days in advance for ordering. When I called I was just asked very basic questions as in, is it for male or female, color, and what I want it to say and they kind of ran with that. I did order this cake for a birthday, but really it was just for me to eat and the birthday as the excuse (HAHA). When I walked in, the cake was boxed up and there wasn't that distinct pungent smell... until you opened up the box, then it was like *BAM* in your FACE durian (ohhh durian....) and if you're not a fan of the smell, this cake WILL travel and your entire fridge will smell of durian just a warning! But the cake itself was delicious! They weren't stingy on the durian, the frosting on the outside was light and fluffy, the filling was nice and creamy, and the cake was moist and well... spongy. So if you're a HUGE durian fan, definitely give this place a try for their durian cake. Yes this cake is more on the pricy side and Yes I would totally order it again. This cake by far beats several places that my family continually insists on purchasing their dry ass spongy cardboard cake from in Sacramento. read more

My navigation had a hard time directing me to this location. First time trying this place. We came here after seeing recommendation from another Yelper. My Mom loves dimsum so we decided to drive to this place since we are already in Reno. We ordered chicken feet, Pork ribs with black beans and pork shumai. The chicken feet was my brother's order and we didn't know it will be spicy. He end up giving it to his daughter. Everything else is very tasty. Total price for our order $44.66. I will definitely try the baked goods like Taro on my next visit. I am glad that they practice social distance and requires customer to wear a mask. read more

First, I am glad that I checked my order before leaving the parking lot, they forgot to give us the sticky rice so I had to go back to ask for them. After we got home, I realized that they forgot my Pineapple Bun with Red Bean. I am not happy. They only do takeouts and they still can't get the order completely right. However, they do have good Sui Mai, other stuffs are okay. I probably will pass going back again. Too bad for both of us. read more

After having been in Hong Kong for two whole weeks eating the best dim sum I've ever had in my life, I just wanted to live there. Unfortunately, life doesn't work that way and I eventually had to come back to Reno. It's been a while since I've been to Honey Bakery(it's pretty far from me) but it was the only place I could think of that comes closest to real dim sum. I'm sure glad I planned another trip to satiate my withdrawals and also celebrate Chinese New Years. Thanks to an updated review of a fellow yelper(thanks again Michael!), I had no hesitations with ordering their house made shrimp siu mai (a traditional Chinese dumpling). It's made with pork and shrimp. Their other option is mushroom and pork. You have the choice to have it steamed there or take it frozen. The siu mai was incredibly fresh and well balanced. I made my own dipping sauce at home using rice vinegar, sugar, soy sauce and grated ginger. The combination was just perfect. This will be my go to place for siu mai. I also tried their lotus sticky rice (glutinous rice stuffed with cured pork, Chinese sausage and salted duck egg then wrapped in lotus leaf and steamed to perfection). It was the perfect consistency and packed with deliciousness. After tasting so many versions in sd and sf, I found that this sticky rice was amazing. Steam to reheat (or microwave in a damp towel) and they freeze well too-just wrap in plastic wrap first. I talked to the owner behind the counter and he's from China and has been baking for ten years!! He's very nice and informed me that he will be adding even more options to the menu-har gow (a traditional Chinese dumpling with a shrimp filling inside a translucent dough) and various versions of rice noodle rolls(pork, shrimp, sausage). YUM!!! I'm beyond excited. While waiting for my order, a family popped in and I ended up talking to a mom who couldn't stop raving about their cakes. If you aren't familiar with Chinese style cakes, they're much less dense than your average American cake, more spongy with lighter cream and fresh fruit. I had a cake like this made for my wedding and will order one for my children's future birthdays. I'm still rating 4 stars because I think they can improve some of their fillings with their buns. Lastly, I ordered a honeydew drink with boba. I love that they use fresh fruit (they have other options depending on availability). The drink was blended lightly with ice making it a little slushy and not like a smoothie. It was really refreshing, but the boba pearls, though under cooked had good flavor. Next time I'll make sure to order the drinks but without boba. They added a table with two chairs. They really listen to their customers and want them to be happy. Reno isn't complete without a dim sum restaurant, but I'm sure it will be one day. In the meantime, I'm thankful for this authentic Chinese bakery that's churning out some of the most popular Chinese foods that rock. read more

The Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice was 1 out of 5. It was very expensive. Two pieces for $10.50. Lacked flavor and seasoning. It was about 90% rice. The egg custard was 2 out of 5. The service was indifferent. It was about 4:40pm when I stopped by. There were lots of food still displayed in the cases and, I am guessing, will be sold the next day, the day after, or the day after that. Will NOT return. read more

If you are craving some bbq pork buns this is the place to go....I think they may be the only bakery in town that offers fresh baked asian breads. Due to Pandemic they currently have limited menu...they didn't have their baked bread buns, so I had to settle for the bbq steamed buns. They also have a small menu of dim sum. I ordered the black bean short ribs. The buns are steamed to order and the dim sum cooked to order as well. They pushed their display case closer to the entrance so that you have no choice but to wait outside for your food, their way of practicing social distancing. It took about 5-7 minutes for my order. The food smelled delicious and my kiddos couldn't wait to dig into the bbq steamed buns. They gave it a thumbs up. I wasn't too impressed with the pork ribs...they were a bit too oily for my liking and mostly bones and a root vegetable the ribs were cooked in. Next time I'll have to try one of their other dim sum choices and come back for their baked buns. The owner mentioned the baked buns would be back on their menu in a month, so I'll be back. read more

Just popped by here driving through Reno around 6:30pm, 30 minutes til closing. Great little independent Asian bakery. They had a moderate assortment of sweet items and many delicious baked bun flavors. I only wish there was more filling in the buns, but that's my personal preference. This probably isn't a gem for people living in that area but it definitely seems like a gem given all the other places around it. The location is just off the freeway when you pass into Reno from the California side of things. The photos online are not quite accurate because their displays are all mess. (Of course maybe things have changed since the CDC lifted regulations for vaccinated people). It was really difficult to see what all the buns looked like from standing in the front. On the right wall, several menus hang for their dim sum. This is really worth examining. We ordered many things to go because there was no seating area. The flavors were fantastic and authentic. Everything also looked great and the quantities were good. I'm not sure if/when we'll be back there but this is definitely worth stopping. We ordered sui mai, cha sui bao, and ha gow. While the cha sui bao and the ha now were good, the sui mai was amazing. We ordered the mushroom version of the sui mai (note that there's still meat in them). Not only were they beautiful in the box but they were amazing in terms of flavor. [Note that I submitted this review for TripAdvisor too. I love this little gem of a store, the buns they sell there are magnificent, and the owner is always pleasant!

Before I moved to Reno, I was on the hunt for dim sum in my soon to be new home. I got lucky and found Honey Bakery! Its a very modest storefront, but their product is anything but. I want to say that I have tried all they're offerings at least once and my favorites always come out on top. The BBQ Pork Baked Bun, Egg Custard Steam Bun, Egg Custard Tarts (AMAZING), and their Taro Cookies (the purple swirl cookies) are my favorite eats here. Another great offering is there 'Take Home' dim sum, bagged and ready to go, you can freeze your buns and steam them later. I take advantage of this with my custard buns!! read more

Even the nastiest dim sum restaurants here in Sac taste better than this place. I got the bbq steak buns, the shrimp dumplings, and the teriyaki chicken steamed buns they are all delicious. I got some the egg custard tart and taro sweet, but didn't take a picture (sorry). No, they do not sell donuts... and you should be happy about that. With pineapple red bean buns (my personal favorite), pork buns and amazingly flaky egg tarts you can't be mad at honey bakery. This is often my weekend treat to myself. They even have boba! Which for those who haven't had it - it's squishy black balls of deliciousness in milk tea (or almond if you're feeling a little bit adventurous). The shop is ran by a family, which makes me even happier to come here on the regular. Make sure to come early as some of the buns run out throughout the day (but you know they're fresh) and don't be afraid to try something new. It's all fairly inexpensive and amazingly yummy. Today when I was here someone ordered a durian cake. So that was rad too! read more

Wow! I am totally amazed on the quality here. The people here are very nice. I had manapua(pork buns) steamed and baked. Also got the Curry Chicken and Teriyaki Chicken. They are nothing less than awesome. Save yourself a drive and car windows by not going to SF and coming here. Parking is abundant and easy access. Now I have to plan my week on when I go here. I wanted to surprise my mom for Mother's Day and order her Dim Sum! Needless to say, Dennis, was super helpful in our order to make sure everything was ready to go for pick up! We ordered the spare ribs (VERY FLAVORFUL), BBQ Pork Steam Buns, Shui Mai, Har Gow, Chicken Terriyaki & Curry Buns, and the Custard Buns. Everything was amazing! We left with 8+ trays! Ask first, how many pieces come in an order! I assumed it was 4 pieces for Har Gow (Shrimp Dumping) and Shui Mai (Shrimp Pork Dumplings) but believe it came in 12+ pieces per order. Their buns come in 3-6+ an order so please keep that in mind. They said their on-line menu is in the works, but for those who are craving dumplings in Reno, this may be your place. The BEST dim sum and char siu bao in Reno. Get there earlier in the day (before noon if you can) bc they sell out on most buns specifically by the end of the day. They've been around here for a long time and they make great food. The buns are really cheap and tasty. The tuna bun is wildly satisfying. I highly recommend the garlic shrimp rolls bc they are so good I wish I could swear on here about it. The flavors are top tier and I think it's one of the few, if only, places where you can get durian cake or boba. Durian is definitely NOT the flavor for me but if you like it, get it from here. I had no idea that there was a Chinese bakery in Reno until I read reviews from Yelper's. I really enjoyed the coconut tarts, egg tart and wife cookies. The napoleon was flaky, but a bit dry for my taste. I ordered a sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf that I have tried it was frozen so I'll update after I've tried it. I originally came in for a cake, but didn't realize that I have to come in to special order 2 days in advance. Next time... It's a small bakery and it's been here for 11 years. It's nice to find a Chinese bakery here in Reno! My boyfriend and I came here in the afternoon and there were a good variety of pastries displayed in the front, but didn't fill the whole display case. I'm assuming it's because we came later in the day and a majority of the pastries were already bought. Nonetheless, my boyfriend and I chose 5 different breads and they were all delicious. This includes the BBQ pork bun, teriyaki bun, chicken curry bun, ham and corn, and ham and green onions. We also ordered mushroom siu mai (initially we wanted shrimp, but they were out) and had to wait about 10 minutes for it to be steamed. Overall, we had a great experience and would like to come back to try the other food they have to offer! And preferably in the morning when the bread is fresh :) read more

Today I hit the jackpot! I found Honey Bakery! I have been told by many that I would NOT find A good Dim Sum Restaurant in all of Reno for the past 3 years. Well that may be so BUT I have found a Bakery with Chinese baked goods AND A GREAT VARIETY OF Dim Sum. First of all there's plenty of parking. The place doesn't open at the crack of dawn. It opens at 9:30am. They have a busy time usually lunch time. The baked buns are fresh with a big variety. Sweet and savory meats. The Dim Sum can e fresh sealed OR you can take it home and steam it to your time of need. Pretty traditional. I was told you can also order some delicacy's . My weekend wasn't done until I got steamed buns, hun! I have loved the selection at Honey Bakery for probably 10 years now, and even though I have moved to the other end of town, and haven't gone by as freqently as I used to when I lived in the NW, they are still as tasty and fresh as they've been since then! I woke up Sunday past with a mean hankering for some buns, literally a "they open in 18 minutes!" kind of a frenzy, and raced over. Yes, the case is "for display only", let's get that out of the way. I think we can all agree, storing freshly made steamed buns in the dry case would be awful, so the best selection is naturally in the morning hours. Get there early, get your first picks. Like any bakery, the later in the day, the more likely the selction is to have diminshed. We had our savory faves like chicken mushroom, bbq pork, ham & scallion, some lotus steamed rice too, and not-too-sweet treats like taro, custard and red bean. When you're considering 10+ buns, you know you may have a problem. No, I didn't pause to take a pic, sorry fellow Yelpers, cuz we are them too damned fast! You will too. never had an unamazing item here. all the dim sum is top notch - sui mai always! buns are perfect every time. coconut, pineapple, custard, taro... heck, all of them are amazing. Creamy milk bun! I'd hold these buns to the same standard of all the ones I've had at any Bay Area/Sacramento spot- some of the best bakery you can get, and it's here in town. go early if you want the coconut and milk buns - they will sell out quick on the weekends. read more
