The Food: Downright fantastic! This is the first breakfast joint that has truly wowed me. If you're contemplating ordering the Pancake Flight then this is your sign to do it. My only tip is to order a salty side to go with it. (You'll thank yourself for the palette cleanse later). The Service: I cannot think of a single place that I have experienced better service at. We tried the pancake flight, too much of the bacon (a lot for side orders), and hash browns for food. For drinks we learned that it's BYOB, so we ordered up a flight of mimosa juices and ran across the street to the packie across the street to buy a bottle of Champagne. Over all it was pretty good. 12/21/23 First Day of Winter - So I've driven by here on numerous occasions and there's always a line of people waiting to get in. You figure the food must be good. So like a Yelper I bookmarked it & made a point of coming back. Today after I got my oil changed I stopped by around lunch time and I still had to wait as all the tables were filled. Honeybear has a huge menu selection coupled with/ginormous portions. When I arrived around 12:30 the restaurant was packed. I had to wait about 5 mins to get a table. I had a craving for a skillet & decided to get the chicken fried chicken skillet (NO I'm not stuttering lol dats what it's called) over potatoes well done & an eggs over easy. Nice crispy on the potatoes w/onions!& green peppers diced up w the chicken fried chicken, white gravy & eggs over easy on top. This also comes w/a side of French toast (which I got) or pancakes or toast. Like I said before they serve ginormous portions that ended up being 2 meals for me. I have been to Honeybear Cafe on multiple occasions and it has always been a positive experience. The ambiance is cute and the space is usually decorated for whatever holiday is close. The staff are all friendly and service is efficient, yet warm and welcoming. The food is consistently good - the portions are usually huge and whether you go savory or sweet, I've never had a bad meal. I especially love the biscuits and chorizo gravy, the jalapeño cheddar grits, and all of the French toasts. Out of the French toasts, the Rogers Park special, churro, or tres leches are all really delicious and again, rhetorical portions are huge. I also love the coffee drinks. One suggestion is to make a reservation ahead of time - especially on the weekends, there is almost always a large crowd outside and a considerable wait time. With a reservation, you can walk right to your table. I have also ordered carry out on busy days - the food is packaged well and arrives warm. I've brought several groups of friends to this location and have never had anyone be disappointed. Great food - great enough to come back for despite the poor service and very loud environment. Acoustics are bad, making for a very loud dining room. Kids get the typical crayons to color with, plus Playdough, which is a unique touch, but also kind of messy for playing at the table. I like that they provide some amuse bouches shortly after we got seated (mini fruit cups and mini cheesecake pieces), which were great since it took a while for our server to take our order, and then for the food to come. The menu is ginormous, with tons of omelette, skillet, Benedict, pancake, French toast, and sandwich options. Also lots of fancy latte options in terms of drinks. Entree prices are a bit higher than you'd see at other brunch restaurants. But portion sizes are also epic - expect to bring half your meal home in a box. My chicken fried chicken was cooked to perfection, with a delicious gravy - which they forgot to include originally, but our server noticed right away and immediately came back with some gravy in a bowl. You can upgrade a side of pancakes or French toast to a signature version - I picked churro French toast, which was two toast sticks (compared to the full entree size of 4 sticks). They were good - I've had both better and worse. Nice and crispy on the outside but a little dense and dry on the inside. There are several kids meal options that are free with purchase of an adult meal - like the Big Bear pancakes, or the Mac and cheese, which my kids devoured. Pancakes are fluffy and delicious. Service was a low point. After we got our food, our server practically disappeared for the remainder of our meal, and we couldn't even flag her down to get coffee refills. It seemed that other servers were being far more attentive to their tables. Bathrooms are less clean than I'd like. And lastly, the price of each item on our bill was slightly higher than the menu price. For example, while the menu says it's $3.99 to upgrade a side of French toast to a signature option, our bill showed $4.32. there were similar markups for the entrees themselves. read more

I know a year or two ago I considered picking up from here, but the estimate has always been an hour or more for takeout so a few days ago was the first time I've eaten here. Since I knew it was popular I was looking forward to it! The food was quite good. I couldn't choose between the pumpkin pancakes (apparently a specialty for this month or so) and the chilaquiles, my go-to when I find it on a restaurant menu. I decided on both; that's what refrigerators are for. I was very surprised to find that the pumpkin pancakes aren't actually pumpkin pancakes. They're plain pancakes with a pumpkin mascarpone. To be clear, they were freakin delicious--I could have eaten the mascarpone alone and been happy. But it's definitely misleading to call them pumpkin pancakes. The chilaquiles were good, though I only had a few bites because surprisingly the pancakes were really filling; luckily they reheated really well. The skillet my companion had was good too--I tasted the potatoes and they were crispy and delicious. One thing of you should be aware is that although you can pay cash or credit, you will pay an additional fee for credit. The restaurant believes that the charge credit companies charge is the responsibility of the customer. Not sure what I think about that, but I'd just be cognizant of it and pay in cash. The only thing that annoyed me about our time here is that when we were here (we got here about 30-45 minutes after they opened) they seated another party in the table directly next to us--even though there were at least 5 tables several feet away that were open the entire time we were there. Whenever a restaurant has some decent sweet options for breakfast, the wife and I usually order a sweet dish and a savory dish to share, which is exactly what we did here. We ordered their RP Strong Biscuit and their Churro French Toast. Both were near perfect. They tasted amazing. The RP Strong Biscuit was stuffed with andouille sausage, crumbled chorizo, jalapeños & onions, and then topped with two over easy eggs, chorizo gravy, sliced avocado all on top of hash browns. It also came with mushrooms which was confusing because it was not on the menu and I'm also not a big fan of mushrooms. But overall it was a very delicious and filling dish. The gravy was delicious and the biscuits were baking and fluffy. The Churro French Toast came with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar. The French toast was thick and very dense with a very delicious cinnamon and sugar crunch on top of the toast as well. Over, I felt very lucky that we were able to get a table right away. But the food itself is not that good. Everything is incredibly, overly sweet, even the savory dishes. I am saying that as an American. The eggs and hashbrowns are quite mediocre, the flavor is bland and mouthfeel falls very short. It's almost a step up from IHOP. There's a lot of fluff but not enough body to the dishes. The service is fast, efficient, and nice. I did not find the ambience enjoyable. They are blasting pop music, the space is crammed with tables and people, and it is very loud. It is also decorated like a kid's birthday party, which is not horrible, but not very tasteful. Honeybear Cafe is one of those places that people rave about and it is just as they described! I have been to Honeybear Cafe twice within the last month and I am addicted. The inside of the restaurant is very spacious. They have a lot of tables that would accommodate various party sizes. The smaller the party the easier you will be able to get seated. The one thing to know about Honeybear Cafe is that it will always be busy. Even when you go early in the morning it will be at least half full. I lucked out during my visit and didn't have to wait to be seated. Please keep in mind that I came within the first hour and a half of them opening (so very early). I would highly recommend making a reservation just to be safe. It does get busy and if you have a larger group the wait will be long. During my most recent visit I saw them quoting at minimum an hour wait. Even with a reservation during my most recent visit I still had to wait roughly 15/20 minutes to be sat. The one perk of going in person is that they have complimentary cheesecake. They seem to pick the options at random but they are all delicious. The waiter staff are consistently friendly and always have a good recommendation. Just note that it is a busy restaurant so if you tell them you need extra time to pick out your meal you will get a lot of time to think. You really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. The portion sizes are large and they take their time with making the dish. I highly recommend the fried chicken skillet but put the gravy on the side. I normally have leftovers so the gravy on the side keeps the dish from getting too soggy. The entire dish was well seasoned. The dish was large and I easily got two and a half meals out of my order. That was paired with the side of pancakes that that comes with. The pancakes actually seem like they are made in-house. They are fluffy and large. You don't really need syrup because it is flavorful. I also tried the mac-n-cheese during my most recent visit and it was delicious. The final great thing about Honeybear Cafe is that it is byob. They offer a juice package that allows you to choose four flavors of juice to spice up your mimosas. It was a fair amount of juice and it was tasty without the champagne. read more

I want to take a moment to share an experience that truly touched my heart. Its very rare I leave reviews but I could not go without acknowledging how impactful their service was. Recently, my daughter and I were at Honeybear Café located in Rogers Park. We were having a difficult day and found ourselves quietly crying at our table. I was doing my best to hold back my tears, praying no one had noticed. The manager noticed us, and instead of ignoring or judging, she approached us with genuine kindness and compassion at the end of our meal. Without saying much, she took care of our tab. No fanfare, no big scene--just a quiet, powerful gesture of humanity and grace. In a world where people are often too busy to stop and care, what she did reminded me that kindness still exists in the purest form. It may have seemed small to her, but to me, it was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me. It reminded me that even strangers can carry light into our darkest moments. Not only was their service and food exceptional but the compassion that she displayed and our waitress Gabby will be etched in my heart. To the manager: thank you from the bottom of my heart. We had a reservation at 9:30 and were promptly seated. 100% recommend getting one since the lines were out the door for those who didn't. When you got seated, they had little cheesecake bites on the table. They were really good and creamy. We got the cookie butter latte (both hot and iced) for drinks - they were okay, I don't think I'm a huge fan of cookie butter as much as I thought, but my friend liked it. They came with biscoff cookies and cookie butter on the rim of the drinks. Now for the food, the options are limitless, there were so many dishes I wanted to try, but I ended up going with the Cajun Cheesesteak Biscuit. I respect this restaurant on so many levels. Although I find it a little dangerous to live this close to it and have to consistently refrain from visiting all the time, I can confirm that the food is worth the line of people sitting in chairs, hanging out by their cars and standing by the front entrance. I've only had a few breakfast items there, but they were worth doing the "good food" dance. But my second reason is because of the fridge and cabinets on the side of their restaurant. One-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted annually (approximately 1.3 billion tons). Bakeries, grocery stores and other restaurants have to dump their food because they can't sell so much of it the next day. I love that they have the fridge so people can take still-fresh, still-hot food that someone may have not wanted or was the wrong order or whatever. This gives pretty much anybody a chance to help avoid food waste. (In this economy especially, that's major.) But when a relative passed and I had a boatload of stuff that I needed to unload, the cabinet and fridge by this restaurant, Craigslist and Freecycle were the easiest ways to give it all away. It took about a month and lots of cleaning to do it, but I was elated that we didn't have to trash perfectly good canned food, refrigerated items and even random seasoning of someone who was a master chef. So while the food is good, it's their social and environmental impact that I love more. I still drop stuff off on occasion, and poke my head in the cabinets for anything that's plant-based, fresh vegetables or fruit. (OK, and Easter and Halloween candy. I admit it.) It's a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Even during this past Christmas when relatives were getting ready to throw stuff away, I jumped in, grabbed various items that were going to be discarded and unloaded about four bags worth of stuff in those cabinets. All of it was gone in less than 48 hours. read more

This is one new favorite places. When we arrived the host was very friendly and upbeat. Our wait wasn't long at all. Upon being seated we were greeted immediately by our table attendant and he made us feel comfortable. We both had coffee which was really delicious and came out fast. We came in to celebrate my friend's birthday and were initially very impressed by the large portions and beautiful décor. It was especially thoughtful of the servers to sing Happy Birthday to my friend, and our server, Jose, was fantastic, truly a great server to have. Unfortunately, our experience took a negative turn when the manager came to our table and informed us that there was a 90 minute time limit per table and asked us to leave. She did not introduce herself at any point; I later learned that her name is Megan and that she is the manager of the restaurant. Her approach felt rude and lacking in empathy, particularly since she was aware we were there to celebrate a birthday. We had also likely just reached the 90 minute mark, not exceeded it. She did not offer an apology for the inconvenience. I was surprised by her tone, as I would expect a manager to communicate with more warmth and professionalism. We were not made aware of the 90-minute policy beforehand, and had we known, we would have absolutely respected it.
