My friend lives up the street from Honeybear Cafe and she was raving about it, so we went (I was visiting Chicago). We enjoyed our food so much that we came here for breakfast two days in a row. The first day, we were able to be seated right away in their back patio section. The next day, we had about a 40 min wait but it went by quickly. Both days, our service was fantastic. Especially for how busy this place is. On Friday, I ordered the Bacado Benny which has a toasted English muffin, with bacon, sliced avocado, poached eggs, and hollandaise drizzled with sriracha. It came with a side of hash browns. I also ordered a fresh orange juice. The next day, I ordered the chilaquiles with verde salsa. A very popular place. On a Tuesday late morning there was a line to get in by the time we left. The food portions are very large. I had a make your own omelet which didn't come with exactly the ingredients I ordered and seemed to have no cheese in it. The waitress readily offered to fix it which I appreciated. When we sat done they gave us complementary cheesecake bites; a really nice and fun touch. A large plate of two pancakes came with my omelet along with some nicely crisp hash browns. Overall we enjoyed the experience. A good place to go for a filling breakfast! Ive been trying to get into this place for months! I finally gave up and settled with taking my food to go. Because of this, I pretty much ordered a wide selection from the menu. I got the plain French toast, Stuffed Cajun Cheesesteak Biscuit, Sloppy Skillet, Trio French Toast Flight, Cajun Catfish & Jalapeño Cheddar Grits, and a pancake flight. My favorite was, by far, the catfish and grits. The catfish was well seasoned and flaky and the sauce on the grits was fantastic. On my most recent visit, my friend and I split the special fall skillet and - of course - the churro French toast. The fall skillet was SO GOOOOOOD. It had chicken sausage, squash, peppers, crispy potatoes, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Heavenly. And huge! As for the churro French toast, well, the first time I ordered it another guest walked by our table and HALTED when they saw the dish, asking what it was. It's enormously tall, and sooooooo delicious. Slightly crispy outside, coated in a crunchy cinnamon sugar, and has strawberries and whipped cream on the side. Well, this has never happened before - I woke up with an massive craving for pancakes. This could only be extinguished with the aforenamed breakfast staple. To Yelp we go! There was a diner whose name I don't remember, but the pictures and the reviews sealed the deal for Honeybear Cafe. We start with a free cube of their cheesecake. A sampler done right, sweet, decadent, savory, luscious, and a crumbly flaky dough. Something for sure on the docket for next time. Now, while I could take or leave pumpkin-based item, Autumn is a time when I allow myself to unabashedly enjoy everything pumpkin, from an occasional PSL, to pumpkin pancakes, it turns out. When I saw these on their seasonal menu, I couldn't resist! These things were great, and did a fantastic job at satisfying the craving. They were sweet, warm and a little fluffy (not the fluffiest things in the world, but I'll take it!). They were gently sweet, and overall had very good flavor. What helped elevate them was the cream on top, as it complimented the pancakes nicely and helped add some moisture too. When it comes to the service, it was friendly and the food came out fast. As for the prices, I would say these are very reasonable considering the portion and the quality. There's just one thing: the check had a 4.5% service charge. I asked the server about what it was, and she stated "It goes to the restaurant" and that the wait staff do not see any of it. It was possible to have it removed, upon request. Finally, I get that everything is getting more expensive, but you know what else goes to the restaurant? The prices of food. If your costs increased, raise prices, don't use a hidden fee to maintain appearances on the menu. Especially don't say its a service charge when it doesn't go to the servers! While I can't say Honeybear has broken into my list of favorite breakfast spots, it delivered on a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. While I don't feel an itch to return next week, I can definitely see myself returning at some point in the future to try some more of their offerings! read more

After eating the cheesecake, I tried to be healthy and ordered the Fall Skillet. I'm currently a south-sider, but I didn't mind making the trip for some deliciousness. Honey Bear Cafe has been on my brunch foodie list for a while. We had such a great experience here. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was a good pick. The restaurant looked great, well decorated, and the line of people standing outside in 30° weather waiting for a table said it all. Our server, Kate, was fantastic. We were a table of 12, and even though it was a tight fit, we were accommodated well and never felt overlooked. Kate was patient, attentive, and managed our large group seamlessly while still taking great care of her other tables. We had a 12:15 PM reservation for two. Upon arrival,they took our names, said a table would be ready shortly and they would text us. We were seated about 15 minutes later. This place is BYOB so while we waited to be seated we stopped at the liquor store across the street and got some Cutwaters! The bowl was HUGE and the chowder was very flavorful and delicious . I love that it was hot but not too hot that I couldn't immediately eat and enjoy. I also really liked that they put corn and mushrooms in the chowder. My catfish and grits came with an egg and I opted for over medium . The eggs were prepared perfectly but I don't feel like they are needed for the dish and prob would opt out of it next time. My fish was fried just a touch too hard but, despite that, everything was delicious. The pancakes in the flight were the star, so fluffy and tasty, I didn't even need syrup.
